Shaheen Afridi, PCB reach uneasy truce as dissatisfaction lingers

The PCB and Shaheen Shah Afridi have reached an uneasy truce after PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi met the player in Kakul earlier today. Afridi, who was deposed as Pakistan T20I captain after just one series, was thoroughly disgruntled with the manner of his sacking and the lack of communication from the board. Relations deteriorated further when the PCB put out a statement on their website containing quotes from Afridi, ostensibly offering Babar Azam, the incoming captain, his full support and stating it was an honour to lead Pakistan.ESPNcricinfo understands that while Afridi still feels his concerns have not been addressed appropriately, the player was willing to put the saga behind him and move on.Afridi was incensed by a statement containing words which were neither approved nor said by him, and ESPNcricinfo understands the PCB acknowledged to the player that an internal error had been made on the board’s part. Though Afridi continues to feel the manner of his sacking was neither fair nor transparent, it is understood relations with Babar – a long-time close friend of Afridi’s – remain strong.Related

There are no concerns about Afridi being unavailable for Pakistan’s upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand, which begins later this month in Rawalpindi, with the fast bowler looking to turn his focus back on his game.Afridi’s obvious displeasure was significant enough for PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi to head to Kakul, where the Pakistan players are training at a military camp. The PCB, for its part, released a statement saying the chairman met the players “to gather firsthand insights into the training camp”.The PCB released a photograph of Naqvi and Afridi shaking hands, though it is understood no individual discussion at length between the pair took place. “The chairman also took the opportunity to interact with the players, personally commending them for their dedication and active participation in the camp. He expressed satisfaction over the players’ enthusiasm and commitment towards enhancing their fitness levels,” the PCB statement read. The camp ends on April 8, with New Zealand arriving in Pakistan on April 14 to play 5 T20Is from April 18 to 27.

Leverkusen have had some major rebuilding to do this summer after losing Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and head coach Xabi Alonso, and they have put their faith in former PSV midfielder Tillman to take on the former's role under Erik ten Hag.

The No.10 shirt is symbolic in the game of football and bears a lot of responsibility. That heavy burden will fall onto the shoulders of the USMNT youngster as Leverkusen look to continue on their upwards trajectory, having finished as runners-up behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga last term.

DID YOU KNOW?

Tillman came through the Bayern academy but spent time out on loan at several clubs, including Rangers. Last season for PSV, he bagged 21 goal contributions across all competitions on the way to winning the Eredivisie title.

Having recently returned from Gold Cup duties with the USMNT, Tillman is hoping to hit the ground running at Leverkusen after his move and fans will be behind him all the way, with the club even offering free printing of his name and number for the next few days, in a similar move to Arsenal for striker signing Viktor Gyokeres.

'Very, very, very close' – Former Barcelona chief makes surprise admission about Newcastle ace Alexander Isak

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The coup of Isak was huge for the Magpies at the time and demonstrated their ambition to become one of Europe's elite clubs. Since becoming Newcastle's record signing, Isak has scored 54 Premier League goals in 86 appearances but now reportedly wants to make a British-record move to Liverpool.

  • WHAT PLANES SAID

Planes said: "Then there have been players which had been able to come but it was not possible. I remember the case of Isak, a player who I particularly liked a lot. I saw him as a striker with a Barça profile, a very associative striker, a striker with a lot of mobility. I liked him a lot at Real Sociedad. WHAT NEXT FOR ISAK?

The future of Isak will be a point of major interest across the Premier League and beyond in the remainder of this summer transfer window. While the emergence of fresh links with Barcelona appears unlikely at this point in time considering the club's financial situation, it is not beyond the realms of possibility that the Catalan super club target the Sweden striker once again at some point in the future. In the meantime, it remains to be seen if Liverpool will submit a second bid for the Newcastle man.

Aston Villa pushing to sign "world-class" £6m-a-year star who Emery loves

Talks are now underway as Aston Villa look to complete the signing of a “world-class” player this summer, according to a new transfer update.

Asensio happy to stay at Aston Villa

Unai Emery’s side ultimately missed out on Champions League qualification this season, but it was still another productive campaign overall, with loanees Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio making a good impression.

The 29-year-old Spaniard added proven quality and end product to Villa’s attack, scoring three goals in the Premier League and Champions League, and he spoke of his admiration for Emery.

“Unai is a coach that I’ve known for a while. He’s had a great career, he’s a top coach, he’s been key in me being able to come here because of his idea of how he wants to play football. I love it, it suits me perfectly and he’s a really important person as to why I’m here right now.”

Thankfully, Asensio is reportedly open to staying put at Villa and signing for good this summer, which will go down well with many supporters, considering the impact former Real Madrid man has made at times. Now, a new update has provided further news on the situation.

New Asensio to Aston Villa update emerges

According to Birmingham World, Aston Villa have held talks with PSG over the permanent signing of Asensio this summer, in a positive update. The Villans are “eager” to snap him up as soon as possible, no doubt to ensure that another team doesn’t get there first, and it is even claimed that Emery is “obsessed with the idea” of retaining his services.

Villa signing Asensio permanently is a no-brainer, with the Spain international still very much in his peak years, and capable of being a talismanic attacking player moving forward.

The £6m-a-year attacker is a match-winning footballer with a winning mentality, having scored in the 2017 Champions League final and won the competition three times during his Madrid days, and Matthew Upson has heaped praise on him.

“Marco Asensio is clever in where he positions himself. It’s a nightmare really. He comes on the pitch, and he has the knack to pick up the right areas. You need to get yourself in a mentality that, when it’s your turn to play your part, you’re at your best, and you’re delivering. That’s what world-class players do. He’s in that bracket. He’s a great signing for Villa, and he’s going to play a big part in the exciting finish to the season they have ahead.”

Martinez upgrade: Aston Villa eyeing "one of the best young GKs in Europe"

With Emi Martínez potentially poised to leave Aston Villa this summer, could they replace him with one of Europe’s “most talented young goalkeepers”?

ByBen Gray Jun 2, 2025

Signing Asensio would feel like a statement of intent by Villa, showing that they are capable of tying down world-renowned players on a permanent basis, even without Champions League football.

Hopefully, he can play a huge part in the next three or four years, potentially even becoming one of the Villans’ best attacking players of the Premier League era.

Impact sub Pandey finally gets his chance, and makes it count

Manish Pandey made 42 in 31 balls after walking out at No. 7 to take KKR to a total they defended well

ESPNcricinfo staff03-May-20242:02

Was sending Pandey as impact sub the right call?

Manish Pandey had been waiting for an opportunity to have a say for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2024 and finally got his chance on Friday.A top-order collapse after KKR had been asked to bat meant he went out as an impact player and scored a 31-ball 42 – it might not mean much in an IPL as high-scoring as this one, but played a huge role on the night, as KKR beat Mumbai Indians (MI) by 24 runs at the Wankhede.Pandey walked out at No. 7 with KKR tottering at 57 for 5 and his 83-run stand with Venkatesh Iyer, who top-scored with a 52-ball 70, took KKR to 169 before they bowled MI out for 145.Related

Starc: Impact Player rule has played a part in bowlers' inflated numbers

Venkatesh, Starc the heroes as KKR end Wankhede jinx

“Certainly this impact-player rule it has specifically helped us in this game, and Manish, he’s been eyeing for an opportunity right from game one but today he got one and he capitalised on it,” KKR captain Shreyas Iyer said on the official broadcast after the game.”It was fantastic to see him go out there and basically build on the partnership with Venky, who has been phenomenal on this wicket and, yeah, we got to a commendable total. All I had to say to the boys [was] that if we have got here, we can defend it with our bowling lineup and that’s what we did.”Venkatesh, the Player of the Match, said that it was important for him and Pandey to rebuild, even if the scoring rate wasn’t much, to save the likes of Andre Russell for the death.”This is the fourth or fifth time where Manish has padded up, but this time he eventually got to bat,” Venkatesh said. “Yeah, that’s the plan obviously. With the impact-player rule, if you see a collapse, you can get a batter in, and he can add to the score.”Asked if giving up the impact-player option within the first quarter of the game was wise, Venkatesh said, “It was very important at that time. With Russell and Ramandeep [Singh] coming in a situation where they don’t play, it was better for someone like Manish to come in and accelerate. And he did well as well.”Initially, I told him it will take time to adjust to the wicket. The ball was holding up, and it was a two-paced wicket. So I told him we have the cushion of time and he is an experienced candidate. He was the one guiding me throughout the innings, how to face the bowler, which bowler to attack, [in] which situation to be aggressive – that communication was very good.”It was Venkatesh’s second half-century of IPL 2024, and his best score by far, leaving behind the 30-ball 50 he scored in KKR’s win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) early in the tournament.”I try to be a smarter cricketer,” Venkatesh said about his approach to the innings. “Everyone has the skillset but if you are smart, you can make those decisions.”It would be very easy for me to go after someone like Piyush Chawla or maybe fast bowlers, just hit them because Wankhede is known as a six-hitting ground. But the team needed me to be there till the end and I’m really happy for that.”

Form vs funk in RCB vs RR winner-takes-all rumble

Match details

Rajasthan Royals (RR) vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Eliminator
Ahmedabad, 1930 IST (1400 GMT)

Big picture: No second chances

On April 21, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) lost a 200-plus chase to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by one run, their seventh defeat in eight games, leaving them last in the league. As a familiar feeling of despondency shrouded their season, ESPNcricinfo outlined how they still had a chance, improbable though it was.Since then, RCB have had a resurrection, the kind of turnaround that has been prime material for inspirational screenplays about sports teams coming back from the abyss. RCB didn’t just win six in a row; they won by massive margins of 35 runs, 24 balls to spare, 38 balls to spare, 60 runs, 47 runs, and by 27 runs to improve their net run-rate and rise above three other teams on the same points as them, to make a dramatic last-minute dash into the playoffs.Related

  • How T20 has changed cricket forever

A couple of days after RCB had begun their revival, Rajasthan Royals (RR) cruised to their eighth win in nine games. They had owned No. 1 for weeks and were favourites to finish there. There was absolutely no sign of what was to come. The fall began insidiously, a one-run defeat in a 200-plus chase, a 20-run defeat in another 200-plus chase, both results so easily attributed to the vagaries of T20 cricket. Even when their batters were muzzled on a slow pitch in Chennai, their captain Sanju Samson didn’t think they were playing bad cricket. But when it happened again in Guwahati, there was no denying their “failures”. Despite losing four in a row, though, and having their final league game washed out, RR would have still finished No. 2 had Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) not won their last game. That’s how strong a safety net they had built with all those early wins. It wasn’t strong enough, however, to give them a second chance of making the final. The value of confidence and momentum in sport is impossible to measure. RCB and RR’s unexpected rise and fall are examples of how unpredictable T20 cricket can be. But in addition to intangibles like confidence and momentum, there’s also experience. RR go into the Eliminator with no experience of playing a high-pressure, knockout game this season. RCB, on the other hand, have qualified for the Eliminator having played, and won, six eliminators already.

Form guide

Rajasthan Royals LLLLW
Royal Challengers Bengaluru WWWWWIt’s been kind of subdued at the Rajasthan Royals camp of late•BCCI

Previous meeting: Buttler’s ton trumps Kohli’s ton

It was RR’s fourth win in four games, and RCB’s fourth defeat in five games. Virat Kohli scored 113 off 72 balls in Jaipur – equalling the record for the slowest IPL century – though he has sped up enormously since. The rest of RCB’s batters didn’t do much – that’s also changed since – and they finished with 183 for 3. Jos Buttler led RR’s successful chase with a hundred, but they don’t have him anymore, while Samson made 69 off 42 balls. He’s passed 20 only once in his last four innings.

Team news and Impact Player strategy

Royal Challengers Bengaluru
RCB brought Glenn Maxwell back into the XI for their previous game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) after Will Jacks returned to England, and he scored 16 off 5 balls and took a wicket with the first delivery of the defence on his way to figures of 1 for 25 in four overs. Expect them to be unchanged, with one of Rajat Patidar and left-arm spinner Swapnil Singh starting in the XI and the other coming in as Impact Player depending on whether they bat or bowl first.Likely XII: 1 Virat Kohli, 2 Faf du Plessis (capt), 3 , 4 Cameron Green, 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 7 Mahipal Lomror, 8 , 9 Karn Sharma, 10 Lockie Ferguson, 11 Yash Dayal, 12 Mohammed Siraj2:27

Powell or Hetmyer? Royals face selection dilemma

Rajasthan Royals
RR won the toss in both their previous full games but lost after making sub-par totals. Are they batting first to make the most of their Impact Player strategy: six batters and five bowlers in a batting first XI gives them the option of a sixth specialist bowler for the chase if they don’t need to bring in an extra batter in the first innings. If they choose to field with six specialist bowlers in the starting XI, they leave themselves with only six specialist batters for the chase. In Chennai, they swapped out Dhruv Jurel for fast bowler Nandre Burger after the first innings. Against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Guwahati, however, they brought in Donovan Ferreira as an extra batter in the first innings because of a collapse. While Shimron Hetmyer, who hasn’t played since May 2 because of injury, was reported to be fit for RR’s last league fixture, he was not named in the starting XI or the subs’ bench for the seven-over contest that was eventually washed out before a ball was bowled. If he is fit for the Eliminator, he could come in for either Rovman Powell or Ferreira.Likely XII: 1 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 2 Tom Kohler-Cadmore, 3 Sanju Samson (capt & wk), 4 Riyan Parag, 5 , 6 Shimron Hetmyer, 7 R Ashwin, 8 Trent Boult, 9 Avesh Khan, 10 Sandeep Sharma, 11 Yuzvendra Chahal, 12 Rovman Powell/Donovan Ferreira/Nandre BurgerRajat Patidar’s takedown of spin in the middle overs has been a big factor in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s revival•Associated Press

In the spotlight: The difference between RCB and RR

The upshot of Kohli and Faf du Plessis’ fast starts, Patidar’s demolition of spin through the middle overs, and Cameron Green and Dinesh Karthik’s finishing, is that RCB’s run rate has jumped from 9.54 in the first half of the season to 11.03 in the second half, the best in that period. During their six-match winning streak, RCB have been scoring at a strike rate of 170 in the powerplay, 174 in the middle overs, and 199 at the death, and go into the Eliminator with nearly all of their batters in prime form.Their bowlers have complemented this surge in batting form by improving their collective economy rate from 10.70 (the worst in the league) in the first half of the season to 9.22 (second best) in the second half.RR, on the other hand, have scored at a run rate of 9.07 in the second half of the season, which is the lowest among the ten teams. Their top four batters, who had a collective average of 50 and a strike rate of 153 in the first nine games, aren’t as prolific anymore either. In their four successive defeats, that average has dropped to 31.66 and the strike rate is down to 133.42. Yashasvi Jaiswal has 32 runs in his last three innings, Samson 33 off 34 balls in his last two, and Buttler’s replacement opener Tom Kohler-Cadmore made 18 off 23 in his only match ahead of the Eliminator. Only Riyan Parag has remained in form, and RR will hope he gets support above and below him in the batting order.

Stats that matter

  • Sandeep Sharma was injured and did not play the only RR-RCB fixture this season, where Kohli made that unbeaten hundred. He’s got Kohli out seven times in 15 T20s while conceding only 87 off 67 balls.
  • Kohli has a powerplay strike rate of 187 in his last eight innings, which has raised his overall strike rate in the first six overs to 162 this season, his best in any IPL.
  • Yash Dayal had been playing a crucial part in RCB’s revival long before he denied CSK in that thrilling final over in Bengaluru. He’s taken eight wickets in their six successive wins with an economy of only 7.78, which is sensational considering he bowls at the death. Dayal has a good match up against Jaiswal in T20s: 11 runs off 12 balls for two dismissals.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s poor run has coincided with Rajasthan Royals’ downturn in fortunes•BCCI

Pitch and conditions

The pitch for the Eliminator is the strip on which Gujarat Titans scored 231 for 3 against CSK and won by 35 runs on May 10. There is no rain forecast in Ahmedabad on Wednesday and it’s likely to be extremely hot, with day time temperatures of 40-45°C reducing to only between 30-35°C in the evening. Whether there is dew or not will depend on the gulf between the day and night temperatures. The range of scores also vary significantly depending on the surface. There was only one match with 175-plus scores in the first four league matches in Ahmedabad, but the last two league games had scores of 200 for 3, 206 for 1 (RCB), 231 for 3 and 196 for 8. RR have not played a game in Ahmedabad this season.

“When you are getting to the business end of the season, you need someone to raise their finger up and say, ‘I am going to win the game for the team’. Yes, this is a team sport, but we have a lot of match-winners in the side, and we need individuals to step up.”
“When we get on that flight to Ahmedabad, we have a job to do. We have it within our grasp to do something that people will remember us for many decades. It will be a journey where people will say, ‘wow, that RCB team was special.'”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Last summer, Palhinha arrived on a €51 million (£44m/$59m) deal from Fulham that excluded potential add-ons. However, he was not counted upon by head coach Vincent Kompany. Despite reiterating his desire to fight for his place in Bavaria, the Portuguese international returned to the Premier League by joining Spurs on a one-year loan, with an option to buy him for £26m (€23m/$27m).

  • WHAT LOTHAR MATTHAUS SAID

Matthaus expressed his thoughts on Bayern's transfer strategy in a column for . He wrote: "Thanks to Joao Palhinha's loan to Tottenham Hotspur, Bayern Munich got away with just one and a half black eyes.

"Thomas Tuchel desperately wanted Palhinha, but Vincent Kompany didn't rely on him. Looking back at the history of the transfer, he was ultimately unnecessary and superfluous.

"Bayern has four or five players who can play in that position. They didn't do a lot of homework and paid a lot of money for a player who barely played in Munich.

"You can't always do everything right. But Palhinha wasn't the only bad investment; [Bryan] Zaragoza, [Bouna] Sarr, and [Sacha] Boey, who came from Galatasaray for €30 million, also cost a lot of money. All of them, however, had little to no playing time."
