Tom Hartley in the right place as England opportunities beckon

If you want a good indicator of 50-over cricket’s place in the modern landscape, take a look at Tom Hartley’s List A career. All five of his appearances in the format have come in 2023 – and none of them for his county, Lancashire. The first three were on an England Lions tour of Sri Lanka in January, before an international debut at Trent Bridge at the end of the summer as part of a band of alternates to face Ireland. The culmination of Hartley’s first year of 50-over cricket will come in the West Indies, as part of an England ODI squad looking to move on from a disastrous defence of their 2019 title in India. A tour previously regarded as an afterthought is now being framed as the scene for an overdue refresh, with just six players from the 2023 World Cup squad making the trip across the Atlantic. Almost by coincidence, Hartley has found himself in the right place at the right time.Related

That is not to say the 6ft 4in left-arm spinner has not been preparing for shock England duty off the back of minimal experience. The Test squad head to India at the start of the year, with spin options limited following Moeen Ali’s post-Ashes retirement. Despite just one five-wicket haul in 20 first-class matches, Hartley is openly considered a bolter for that five-match series.Having emerged as the No. 1 spinner at Emirates Old Trafford this season, ousting legspinner Matt Parkinson – out of the team, and subsequently out of the club – he featured in 10 County Championship matches. Though he only managed 19 dismissals at an average of 44.84, ECB performance director Mo Bobat was one of many who took note of his developing “attributes”, which he saw close-up the previous winter in Sri Lanka. That relationship is set to continue later this week when Hartley travels to the UAE as part of a 20-strong Lions group for a three-week training camp which is as much a fine-tuning exercise as far as red-ball spin is concerned as it is a fact-finding mission for India in the new year. Particularly with Test head coach Brendon McCullum coming out to survey the options at his disposal.Nothing sums up the surprising nature of Hartley’s rise more than his debut. He was not part of the XI for the 2nd ODI with Ireland, which was announced the day before, and discouraged those close to him from making the trip to Trent Bridge. “I was like ‘no no, don’t bother, I’m not going to play. It would be a long day otherwise’.”On his way down to breakfast on the morning of the game, he received a call from white-ball coach Matthew Mott to say he was now playing after Luke Wood was struck down with tonsilitis. “I was like – ‘shit!’.” He sent a follow-up message to those family and friends who were enquiring about attending: “Oooops.”His girlfriend, Lauren, ended up coming down, though by the time she arrived, Hartley had already parted with his phone as per ICC anti-corruption rules, meaning she had to get her own ticket. The pair met afterwards for a celebratory dinner, with Hartley buying her a present by way of reimbursing her for missing out on a freebie.Though the family could at least watch him on TV – striking 12 off 9 as England posted 334 for 8, before a respectable 0 for 48 from 10 overs – Hartley regrets they were not in the huddle when he was presented his cap by Andrew Flintoff. The talismanic allrounder was with the squad in an unpaid capacity, and his speech to Hartley was his first public words since a serious car crash while filming an episode of last December. It was an emotional address, in which Flintoff informed Hartley the cap “will change your life forever”, delivered with remarkable poise given the short turnaround.”At Headingley, we had a few chats and [he] got to know me,” Hartley said of his developing relationship with Flintoff, who will accompany the Lions this week before also heading to the Caribbean. “He knew a lot about me, what I’d been through and a couple of his lads play in the same club league as me in the Liverpool District [Hartley plays for Ormskirk Cricket Club]. He knows a bit about my upbringing, where I’ve played and that sort of stuff and obviously still keeps tabs on Lancashire. He knows a bit about that and knows a few of the coaches so he was really well informed.””I wasn’t quite old enough watching cricket when the 2005 Ashes was on but watching the re-runs you really got a feel for the player he was. He’s just been so fantastic in being a real role model for players like myself and a lot of the boys at Lancashire.”Hartley does not shy away from the prospect of a Test debut in India, or the importance of using his time wisely in the UAE, given it will now be cut short by having to travel to the Caribbean ahead of England’s first ODI in Antigua on December 3. Since hearing he might be in the mix, he has let his mind wander, particularly back to the 2021 series in which the spinners ran riot – notably fellow rangy left-armer Axar Patel, who finished with 27 wickets at 10.59 in just three matches through attacking the stumps with the new ball, something England are keen to get their up-and-coming twirlers practicing in the UAE.”Hearing this sort of stuff, it’s made me think,” Hartley said. “But I try not to look too far ahead. Just trying to adapt myself to bowling like them bowlers.”I watched quite a lot of that [2021] series when it was going on and thinking, ‘well, attributes-wise I’m not too far off’. Obviously bowling in England is a lot different so I don’t really get to practice them skills. That’s why I’m grateful of this opportunity here now. Hopefully, the wickets in Abu Dhabi will be similar to Indian wickets, and we can start practising that sort of stuff.”Obviously, these guys like Axar and [Ravindra] Jadeja and people like that have been doing it for years, whereas in England, it’s more traditional sort of over the top, don’t go anywhere, wait for the mistake from the batsmen rather than the spinner being the one on top firing it in and firing it in. It will be nice to work on that, and hopefully, it’ll come pretty easy.”Hartley receives his ODI cap from Andrew Flintoff•Getty Images

The majority of Hartley’s competitive cricket has been in the shortest formats, his 82 T20 appearances coming as a regular for Lancashire and Manchester Originals. Playing in front of big crowds and bowling with the new ball, including the first ball of the men’s Hundred, are examples he cites of pressure situations taken in his long stride. What grey areas on his CV are being covered by a studious disposition to a sport he only came to aged nine or 10.When he is not picking the brains of Lancashire’s spin coach Carl Crowe, he is consuming as much as possible. His inspirations growing up were Daniel Vettori and Graeme Swann, who is reprising last winter’s role as a spin consultant with the Lions. He paid close attention to Australia’s tour of India earlier this year, particularly debutant Todd Murphy. This World Cup, he has been taking mental notes on Jadeja, Mitchell Santner and legspinner Adam Zampa.Much of the World Cup viewing has been with his father, Bill Hartley, a former track athlete who won gold in the 1974 European Championships and silver in that year’s Commonwealth Games, both in the 4x400m relay. Despite the strong lineage, athletics did not call to Tom.”I used to be quite chubby. I didn’t hit puberty until till late, so I was never the sports star. But obviously with my dad’s background, he always put me in a good place from a technical point of you and he was quite happy for me to go away from his sport.”Him having a career in it, I think he liked for me to experience other things, so he always pushed me into football, cricket, a bit of rugby, that sort of stuff. That was fine by him. Eventually when I realised I should up my running, I came to him and asked ‘can we do a few sessions?'”Bill’s interest in cricket grew with Tom’s aptitude. Occasionally, it would spill over into frustration – “my dad would kill me a few times for some of the shots I played”. Otherwise, room has been afforded to allow Tom to do his own thing. If there is one key lesson Hartley has learned, it is to be more protective of his memorabilia. Bill, it turns out, has lost a few prized possessions.”There was a big box that we were going through, and he was like: ‘We’re just going to have to chuck them out eventually.’ He won gold at the Commonwealths – not in the box, so no idea where it is.”Given the rate at which Hartley is progressing, it might be worth starting his own box.

Aus-SA semi-final: All eyes on the weather in Kolkata

How does the reserve day work? And what happens if there is no result even after the reserve day?

Andrew McGlashan14-Nov-20235:37

Finch on Australia’s champion mentality in World Cup knockouts

Is the forecast worrying for Kolkata?Well, as ever, it depends which website you look at, but there is certainly a reasonable threat of rain playing a part. At the moment, Friday looks the more problematic day, with Thursday, the scheduled day of the semi-final, having a prediction of around a 50% chance of seeing showers. When does the reserve day come into play? Before activating the reserve day, the umpires will make every effort to complete the match on the scheduled day, including reducing the game to a minimum of 20 overs per side. Only if this isn’t possible does the extra day come into play. A reserve day was needed in the 2019 semi-final between India and New Zealand at Old Trafford.Related

How does it work?If a match isn’t completed on the scheduled day, and the reserve day is used, there are basically two scenarios for how the match is played out depending on when the final rain interruption has come.Courtesy of the ICC playing conditions, here are two working examples:Example 1: Match starts at 50 overs per side and there is an interruption at 19 overs. Overs are reduced to 46 overs per side and play is about to resume. Before another ball is bowled it rains and play is abandoned for the day. As the match did not resume under the revised overs, the match should continue on the reserve day at the original 50 overs per side with the overs reduced if necessary during the reserve day.Example 2: The same start as in example 1 i.e. match starts at 50 overs per side and there is an interruption at 19 overs. Overs are reduced to 46 overs per side and play is about to resume. This time, play starts and after an over has been bowled it rains and play is abandoned for the day. As the match has resumed, it is continued on the reserve day at 46 overs per side with the overs further reduced if necessary during the reserve day. What happens if there’s a no result? If a minimum of 20 overs per side is not possible across the two days and the match is a no result, the team that finished higher in the group stage will progress to the final. That means it would be South Africa who go through to the decider in Ahmedabad on November 19 (where it is very unlikely to rain).

'Relegation written all over it' – Brentford told Jordan Henderson is a 'downgrade' on Christian Norgaard as fans react to 'finished' ex-Liverpool captain's return to the Premier League

Fans have slammed Brentford for signing Jordan Henderson while warning that the veteran English midfielder is a massive "downgrade" on Christian Norgaard. On Tuesday, the Bees confirmed the free transfer for the Premier League and Champions League-winning former Liverpool captain, who has returned to his homeland following stints at Al-Ettifaq and Ajax.

Following Norgaard's departure for Arsenal this summer, Brentford have found the Danish midfielder's replacement as they announced the arrival of Henderson on a two-year deal. The official statement from the club read: "Brentford can confirm the signing of Premier League and Champions League-winning captain Jordan Henderson on a two-year contract. Henderson, an England international with 84 caps for the Three Lions, joins the Bees on a free transfer after departing Ajax this summer."

The arrival of 35-year-old Henderson is not sitting well with a large section of fans who feel that the England international is a massive "downgrade" from former club captain Norgaard.

A fan with the X handle @kevo81393734 wrote: "LOVE HENDO! But this has relegation written all over it."

A Chelsea fan handle named CFCApex added: "I feel bad for you lot. How do you downgrade from Norgaard to Henderson RIP Brentfords European hopes."

A Manchester United fan handle named @UTD_Chill posted: "Finished player joining a Finished club."

Rob Edwards also took a dig at new Bees boss Keith Andrews as he wrote: "Andrews then this. It's like you want to get relegated."

Dean Evans also targeted Andrews as he added: "What an uninspiring signing if I ever seen one. First the manager now this."

WHAT THE MANAGER IS SAYING

Speaking on Henderson's arrival at the club, Brentford manager Andrews said: "When we became aware of Jordan’s availability, it was a pretty simple decision. We did our due diligence around his recent games to see where he is: he’s still phenomenally fit and he’s still phenomenally motivated to achieve things in the game, having already achieved a lot. With the void of experienced players leaving the building – Christian Nørgaard, Mark Flekken and Ben Mee – it was important to replace that.

"We’ve got a pretty young squad, overall, and we’ve got a lot of club experience, which is really important, with the likes of Vitaly Janelt, Mathias Jensen, Ethan Pinnock and Josh Dasilva, who is still at the club doing rehab. But what Jordan will bring is that he has been one of the most influential leaders in the modern Premier League years. He’s been at the forefront of driving for titles and the Champions League at a fantastic football club. He also has experience at an international level with England and, with that, comes a level of experience, professionalism and dedication to his profession – that’s the exact way we want to be as a football club. He will drive standards and be a brilliant addition to the squad."

India and South Africa prep for T20I series decider

Chances of a full game are high and Johannesburg typically has plenty for batters and fast bowlers

Firdose Moonda13-Dec-20233:55

Manjrekar: Would like to see Shreyas Iyer at No. 3

Big picture: India, SA and their T20 World Cup gainsAnd just like that, both teams best chance for T20 World Cup preparation on the international stage will come to an end, two days after it began. What’s been gleaned so far? Only as much as we could from 19.3 overs of India’s batting and 13.5 of South Africa’s, and which we can briefly summarise as this: Suryakumar Yadav and his shots over the wicketkeeper are among the most entertaining things in T20 cricket. Reeza Hendricks must open the batting for South Africa at the next T20 World Cup, irrespective of who his opening partner is. Tabraiz Shamsi has matured into a T20 banker, and Rinku Singh is winning the race as India’s finisher so far. That’s not too bad for a series where the first match was washed out entirely and the second rain-affected.It also means we’ve yet to see a full T20 game and the big hope is that the Wanderers delivers one. Even if it does, neither side is at full strength and South Africa have reduced their stocks even further by releasing Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee to play in the domestic four-day game in preparation for the Tests later in the tour and will field an inexperienced pace attack. India are also without a key player as Deepak Chahar has remained at home for personal reasons. Both sets of seamers struggled for consistency in damp conditions at St George’s Park and will want to get their disciplines right in the decider. They need look no further than Mohammed Siraj, whose lines were exemplary, as an example. While the spinners were all impressive in Gqeberha, they are unlikely to find much assistance in Johannesburg and could end up being the main targets for batting line-ups that both have headline acts. Hendricks’ run of form sees him average 51.50 from his last 12 T20Is while Suryakumar and Rinku give India a powerful middle-order combination. All three of them might have the T20 World Cup in the back of their minds but India’s stand-in captain, for his part, isn’t saying so.”Go out and enjoy yourself,” has been his message to his players and with Thursday being the eve of the public holiday South Africa have declared to celebrate the Springboks Rugby World Cup win, who would dare to argue?Form guideSouth Africa: WLLLL (last five matches, most recent first)
India: LWLWW In the spotlight: Matthew Breetzke and Yashasvi JaiswalIn a truncated chase on Tuesday night, Matthew Breetzke was off to a sparkling start with 16 off 7 balls and showed good energy at the crease – almost too good. He was hasty in turning for a second run with his opening partner Hendricks still to leave the non-striker’s end and was visibly furious with himself when he was run out, squandering an opportunity to anchor a chase. He has one more chance to make a solid case for a more regular role at the Wanderers, where he will open for the final time in international cricket this year. Breetzke is not part of the ODI squad.Reeza Hendricks has been excellent for South Africa in T20Is this year•Getty Images

In the other camp, Yashasvi Jaiswal’s immense talent was limited to three balls in the opening match but he will be eager to show more of what he can do. With a reputation for aggression made perfectly clear by an eye-popping strike rate – 161.57 from his 14 T20Is so far – Jaiswal’s next challenge is to test it in South African conditions. Although he won’t be facing South Africa’s first-choice attack, there will still be plenty of pace, bounce and movement on offer and how he counters could make for an interesting contest.Team news: New faces for South Africa? With Jansen and Coetzee out, South Africa may find place for one, or both, of Nandre Burger and Ottniel Baartman to debut. Burger may edge ahead as he offers extra pace. Donovan Ferreira could also find his way into the XI, as an extra allrounder.South Africa (probable): 1 Reeza Hendricks, 2 Matthew Breetzke, 3 Aiden Markam (capt), 4 Heinrich Klaasen (wk), 5 David Miller, 6 Tristan Stubbs, 7 Donovan Ferreira, 8 Andile Phehlukwayo, 9 Lizaad Williams, 10 Ottniel Baartman/Nandre Burger, 11 Tabraiz ShamsiGiven Chahar has not joined the squad in South Africa yet, if India want to make any changes, it’s likely to be in the batting and spin departments, rather than among the seamers. Ruturaj Gaikwad missed Tuesday’s match with illness and could come in for Shubman Gill if he has recovered. Kuldeep Yadav may make way for Ravi Bishnoi, even though conditions are unlikely to offer too much to either of them.India (probable): 1 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 2 Ruturaj Gaikwad/Shubman Gill, 3 Tilak Varma, 4 Suryakumar Yadav (capt), 5 Rinku Singh, 6 Jitesh Sharma (wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Arshdeep Singh, 9 Kuldeep Yadav/Ravi Bishnoi, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Mukesh Kumar Pitch and conditions: Clear(ish) skies and a great game in the offingThe news everyone wants to hear is that the drizzle has drifted away and they’re mostly in luck. Thursday’s forecast for Johannesburg is clear for the late afternoon with only a 25% chance of evening thunderstorms. That means the chances of a full match are pretty good and the prospect of entertainment, even better. At altitude, expect the ball to reach the boundary quicker but with good pace and bounce, there should be plenty for the quicks as well. Stats and trivia: Runs, runs and more runs Hendricks is South Africa’s leading run-scorer in T20I cricket this year, with 108 runs more than his nearest competitor, Aiden Markram. For India, Suryakumar leads the batting charts, and has 363 runs more than the next highest run-scorer Jaiswal. Suryakumar also broke into the all-time top 10 six-hitters’ list in T20Is after Tuesday match. He has 115 sixes to his name. The Highveld has been spectacular for T20I run-scoring this year. In March, Centurion’s SuperSport Park hosted the game with the highest match aggregate – 517 – between South Africa and West Indies. And two days later, the Wanderers saw the 16th highest match aggregate of 433 reached in a thriller between the same two sides. Quotes “Rob has made the environment a lot more relaxed. He has made the guys be themselves. We are human beings. He has let us have bad days. He has allowed our families in. A lot of the guys are husbands and fathers, so that’s important. That happiness that the guys have makes us play better.”
“For every series, I was preparing for the conditions. If you see, West Indies was a bit on the slower side, and if you see Ireland, [the pitches] were similar to South Africa wickets, it was a bit bouncy and seaming a bit. We were preparing according to the [conditions] and we are India. So, it has been a great experience and great learning.”

Young and Latham power New Zealand to 1-0 lead in rain-hit match

Debutant Josh Clarkson took 2 for 24 on debut to keep Bangladesh to 200 for 9

Vishal Dikshit17-Dec-202330 overs A power-packed partnership of 171 for the third wicket between centurion Will Young and captain Tom Latham led the way for New Zealand to take a 1-0 lead over Bangladesh in the rain-hit first ODI in Dunedin. Chasing a stiff and revised target of 245 in 30 overs, Bangladesh had no big scores or partnerships to set up their chase. It looked like they had a chance when they were 80 for 2 in the 12th over but once debutant Josh Clarkson removed the well-set Anamul Haque and Litton Das in consecutive overs, and Rachin Ravindra had Mushfiqur Rahim caught behind, Bangladesh never recovered from 103 for 5 apart from some late fireworks from Afif Hossain and Mehidy Hasan Miraz.New Zealand got off to a rocky start after rain had initially reduced the game to 46 overs a side after the toss, when Shoriful Islam found the edges of Rachin Ravindra and Henry Nicholls to dismiss them for ducks in the first over. From 5 for 2, Young and Latham began the recovery but Latham was dropped on 18 when Soumya Sarkar put down a catch above his head at second slip off Mustafizur Rahman. The innings was interrupted twice by rain; first in the 14th over, when it became a 40-overs-per-side contest, and then in the 20th over with New Zealand 108 for 2. Both batters had just opened up with consecutive fours from Latham against Mehidy and Young against Mustafizur that pushed the run rate towards 5.50.As soon as Latham brought up 4000 ODI runs and his 50, off 58 balls, came the longest rain interruption in the 20th over that reduced the game to a 30-over contest. After play resumed, Latham and Young hit Soumya for two sixes in an over and Latham also launched Mehidy into the car park over long-on before clobbering Soumya for three consecutive fours on the leg side. Young, after raising his fifty of 61 balls, accelerated by swatting Shoriful for two fours in an over behind square on the leg side that took them to 159 for 2 with six overs left.Running out of options, Bangladesh brought on Afif but he too got belted for two sixes before Mehidy finally gave them some respite by having Latham chop on for 92 off 77. Mark Chapman attacked from his first ball, hitting two sixes and a four in his first six balls, while Young raced from 72 to 89 in one over with four more fours off Soumya. In a dramatic 29th over from Mehidy, Young smacked a four and a six to get to 99 before Chapman was run out and Young reached his third ODI hundred off just 82 balls. Bangladesh conceded only eight runs and affected three run-outs in the final over, but New Zealand had put up a formidable 239 by hammering 131 runs off the last 64 balls after the last rain break.Josh Clarkson took two wickets on debut•Getty ImagesSet a revised target of 245, Bangladesh lost Soumya for a duck when he was caught behind off Adam Milne in the first over before Anamul and Najmul Hossain Shanto steered them towards 50. Ish Sodhi, however, struck with his fourth ball by bowling Shanto around his legs by going past his reverse sweep, and when it looked like Anamul and Litton were going steady, Clarkson struck with two different kinds of short balls. He first took a return catch off Anamul by inducing a leading edge and then bowled a slower bouncer to have Litton caught behind. Like Shanto, Mushfiqur’s reverse sweep also resulted in his dismissal when his top edge was caught by wicketkeeper Tom Blundell. Bangladesh were reeling at 103 for 5, with the asking rate above 10 an over.Bangladesh were still in the game though, with Towhd Hridoy and Afif adding a quick stand of 56 off 38 balls, but it was still not enough to reduce the asking rate. They slipped further when Sodhi returned and had Hridoy caught at long leg off a wrong’un and Afif lobbed a catch to short midwicket next over. It was a lost cause to get 80 runs from six overs with three wickets in hand, and Mehidy’s blows only ensured that Bangladesh got to 200.

'I was a bit nervous' – Labuschagne comes through bruising Perth battle

Cleared of a serious finger injury, Marnus Labuschagne declared himself fit and ready for the Boxing Day Test after Australia’s 360-run series-opening victory over Pakistan on a “brutal” Optus Stadium surface.Labuschagne was one of a number of Australia batters roughed up in their second innings as the wicket deteriorated on days three and four.During the sixth over of Australia’s second innings, early in the final session on day three, Labuschagne was whacked on the little finger of his right hand from a rearing delivery by debutant quick Khurram Shahzad that jumped off a length.Related

He sought medical attention immediately, but resumed batting after several minutes before falling for 2 having made 16 in the first innings.”The finger is fine, there’s no break. It hit me more on the knuckle side and sort of just jammed up my hand,” Labuschagne said. “It just got me in a bit of an awkward spot. There was no padding on that side of the glove, so it just didn’t feel that good.”I was a bit nervous. I’ve had a lot of finger blows, but it just felt a bit different. It was a little bit sore overnight.”Labuschagne spent an hour in the Optus Stadium nets before play on day four where he was tested by quick Lance Morris, who is arguably the fastest bowler in the country and he was part of Australia’s first Test squad.”It [net session] wasn’t to test the finger out, it was to bat…something I didn’t do enough of in this game,” said Labuschagne, who before this Test had compiled 501 runs at an average of 167 from four previous innings at Optus Stadium.Usman Khawaja and Steven Smith also received blows to their arms, while allrounder Mitchell Marsh was twice hit on the helmet on day four as Pakistan’s quicks resorted to fiery short-pitched bowling.”Uz seems fine and Steve is all good,” Labuschagne said. “It was brutal there at the end with the cracks opening up. We’re all used to the bounce, played a lot here and some of us have good records in Perth.”But no one likes batting when it’s up and down [and] sharp steep bounce on a fast wicket. That’s not your cup of tea, but you just have to find a way when it’s like that.”Emerging unscathed from the bruising contest, Australia will almost certainly go into the Boxing Day Test unchanged meaning allrounder Cameron Green is set to miss selection once again.Labuschagne, who has played 39 Tests in a row, believed the MCG wicket – which has livened up in recent seasons after a dull period – would present challenges for the batters.”The MCG wicket has changed so much over the last four years,” he said. “It’s become probably very much like Adelaide with a bit of seam and swing…quite a bit of grass. Probably will be a little bit of a different challenge to this wicket, which was more bounce.”While Australia’s batters copped physical punishment, a hapless Pakistan may have mental scarring after crumbling for 89 in their second innings to slide to a 15th straight defeat in Australia.”I think it is a big advantage when you’re playing a subcontinent team on such a bouncy surface,” Labuschagne said. “It was certainly one of those tough games that you get in Perth.”
