Harmanpreet Kaur calls for more women's Tests

India’s captain also wants red-ball matches to return to domestic cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Aug-2023India captain Harmanpreet Kaur has called for more women’s Tests as well as a resumption of long-duration domestic cricket in India. Harmanpreet, 34, is broadly representative of the top-level women’s cricketer of her time in how many games she’s played in each of the three formats: only three Test matches to go with 127 ODIs and 154 T20Is.India are scheduled to play only two Test matches in the 2022-25 women’s Future Tours Programme (FTP) cycle, both at home in the 2023-24 season, against England and Australia. Only four teams will play Test cricket during this cycle, with India playing the fewest behind England (five), Australia (four) and South Africa (three).”As a player, I definitely want more Tests because as a growing kid, we saw more Tests on TV than T20s,” Harmanpreet said while interviewed on the . “Nowadays it’s a lot of fun playing T20s but Test cricket is something every cricketer wants to play.”This year we have two Tests – one against England and one against Australia – and I hope those games can make a huge impact on women’s cricket and hopefully in the future we will keep getting more Test matches. We have to bring back Test matches in women’s cricket because it’s very important for women’s cricket.”Related

Harmanpreet to miss start of Asian Games after pleading guilty to ICC charges

The last time there was multi-day domestic women’s cricket in India was in 2017-18, when the BCCI conducted an inter-zonal three-day tournament as well as an inter-zonal Under-19 two-day tournament. While Harmanpreet is happy with how far domestic women’s cricket has come since her early years, particularly with the start of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), she hopes long-duration cricket will resume soon.”Trust me, [domestic cricket] has improved a lot,” she said. “Initially when I started playing, we hardly got domestic games but for the last couple of years, domestic level has improved a lot. We are getting more games and some domestic games are live also, people can watch on TV.”It is improving day by day but in my early days we used to play two- and three-day games which we are really missing, and I’m sure after these two Test matches hopefully we’ll get two-day matches back. The more cricket we get, the more improvement we’ll see in women’s cricket.”Definitely it’s improving day by day and [I] hope to see some more talent in the Indian side. As you mentioned WPL was a game-changing moment for us, the tournament was so good, everyone loved it back home, we had a great experience and hopefully next year we’ll get some more young talent who can take this cricket higher.”After years of players voicing their desire for a women’s franchise T20 tournament along the lines of the IPL, the WPL got underway in 2023, with the Harmanpreet-led Mumbai Indians winning the title.”Yes definitely it’s a little late, to be honest, but something is better than nothing,” Harmanpreet said, when asked if it had taken too long for the WPL to get off the ground. “At least it started and started in such a way that everyone liked it. Maybe we were a little scared, [wondering] what if people won’t like it, but the response we got for WPL, some of the audience, they were more interested in women’s IPL than men’s because it was something new to watch and they really liked it. Hopefully, after some years, we’ll add more teams, more players.”

Ben Stokes likely to miss England's second World Cup game

Allrounder still nursing a sore hip; England could look to play Reece Topley against Bangladesh

Ben Stokes is highly unlikely to play England’s second World Cup game, against Bangladesh, in Dharamsala on Tuesday as he continues to nurse a sore left hip.Stokes came out of ODI retirement to make himself available as a specialist batter for the World Cup, despite his chronic left-knee injury. But he missed their heavy defeat to New Zealand in Ahmedabad last week and has not played a competitive game since hitting 182 – England’s highest ODI score – against New Zealand, nearly a month ago.He has batted in the nets twice since England arrived in Dharamsala, moving much more freely when he faced spinners on Monday morning than he did when batting against sidearm throws on Sunday afternoon. But he is a major doubt for Tuesday’s game, with England’s fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on Sunday framing as a potential comeback.Jos Buttler, England’s captain, told the BBC that Stokes was “progressing well… he is doing more and more each day and seems to be improving, so it is good signs.” But he clarified at his pre-match press conference: “It’s good to see him back in the nets and building back towards full fitness, but he’s probably unlikely for tomorrow.”Stokes had initially planned to spend these two months resting his knee but confirmed in August that he had changed his mind. “The words ‘World Cup’ are pretty inspiring,” he said. “The idea of going in and potentially being able to win back-to-back World Cups was one of the big things.”In Stokes’ absence, Harry Brook filled in at No. 4 against New Zealand, scoring 25 off 15 balls before holing out to deep midwicket as he attempted to hit Rachin Ravindra for a fourth successive boundary. He is likely to continue in the same role on Tuesday, and will be tested by Bangladesh’s spinners.Tuesday’s match will be played on a fresh pitch, two strips over from the unusually slow surface on which Bangladesh beat Afghanistan on Saturday. England will consider bringing an extra seamer into their side, with Reece Topley the most likely candidate, potentially at the expense of Moeen Ali.”It’s definitely an option,” Buttler said, when asked about the possibility of picking an extra seamer. “I played here in the IPL just gone, and there can be some good pace and bounce in the wicket. So certainly, we’ll have those discussions and we’ve got fantastic options within the squad to pick different line-ups with a different balance. It’s something we’ll consider.”

The Daily Mail claims that Chelsea, who have just sold keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to Arsenal, and West Ham are interested in signing the Danish stopper following Leicester's relegation to the Championship. The 24-year-old impressed for the Foxes last term so it may be difficult to hold onto the former Denmark Under-21 international.

If Chelsea do try and sign Hermansen, it is a clear indication they are not happy with their current crop of keepers. Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Mike Penders, Gaga Slonina, and Djorde Petrovic are already on the club's books but that was one area of the pitch where Enzo Maresca's side looked particularly vulnerable last season.

DID YOU KNOW?

If Hermansen leaves Leicester, who are looking for a new manager following Ruud van Nistelrooy's sacking, they will desperately need a new number one next season – particularly as Danny Ward and Daniel Iversen have headed to Wrexham and Preston North End, respectively.

It remains to be seen if West Ham, who are looking for a new keeper following Lukasz Fabianski's exit, and Chelsea make a move for the ex-Brondby star. Due to Leicester's financial issues, they will want a substantial fee for his services – although being in the Championship weakens their bargaining power.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Former Parma coach, Cristian Chivu, wants to bring Bonny to San Siro. Chivu, who joined Inter after Simone Inzaghi left for Al-Hilal, believes in the young prospect, having managed him last year at Parma. Inter have offered €22 million (£19m/$25m) with an additional €3m in bonuses for the French forward, and an agreement is also reportedly in place. However, Stuttgart's involvement can complicate the deal for the Nerazzurri as they look to close the deal as quickly as possible.

Bonny has been an integral part of Chivu's system at Parma, scoring six goals and providing four assists in 37 games in Serie A. The Romanian manager wants to replicate the same system at Inter, and to this end, might also look to bring defender Giovanni Leoni from Parma. The duo were the cornerstone of Chivu's success during his spell at Ennio Tardini.

Durham secure Division Two title despite D'Oliveira resistance

Durham clinched the LV=Insurance County Championship Division Two title after bowling out Worcestershire shortly before the close of a rain-affected third day at New Road.Promotion had been secured for Durham last week without bowling a ball when Leicestershire failed to secure a batting point against Sussex at Hove. They required a maximum of five points heading into this game to clinch top spot. The three secured for dismissing Worcestershire for 313, plus the ones dropped by the home side for batting, ensured they finished in pole position.Durham will be back in Division One for the first time since 2016 when they were relegated over financial issues. Scott Borthwick was a member of that Durham side and fittingly is now the captain on their return to the top flight. It has been a superb team effort and they have provided the division’s leading run-scorer in Alex Lees (1284) and top wicket-taker in Ben Raine (54). Raine and Bas de Leede both picked up three wickets while Worcestershire club captain Brett D’Oliveira provided the sternest resistance. His efforts helped claim two precious batting points in the battle for the second promotion spot. Many home supporters also had an eye on events at the Uptonsteel County Ground as nearest rivals Leicestershire strengthened their grip against Yorkshire. But the fate of Worcestershire remains in their own hands and their prime objective now will be to collect as many bowling bonus points as possible. They resumed their first innings on 104 for 1 after a second day washout and Jake Libby cover drove the fifth ball of the day from Vishwa Fernando for four to complete an 85-ball half-century. But on 57 the opener was undone by a delivery from Raine which nipped away and caught behind by Ollie Robinson.Azhar Ali collected three boundaries in quick succession off Raine while new batter Jack Haynes looked in good nick and raced to 35 off 47 balls with six boundaries. But the momentum switched in Durham’s favour as Paul Coughlin struck in successive overs and also bowled the delivery which led to Adam Hose retiring injured.Haynes was undone by a delivery angled back in and lost his off stump and then Azhar gave his wicket away in tame fashion when he slapped a delivery straight to cover. In between Hose was struck on the left wrist by Coughlin and was replaced in the middle by Kashif Ali.Immediately after Azhar’s dismissal, rain drove the players from the field for a three-and-a-quarter hour break.Kashif and new batter D’Oliveira scored freely against Raine and Coughlin during the evening session. D’Oliveira cover drove Coughlin to the ropes and then steered him down to third man to bring up the 200 in the 54th over. The partnership was worth 69 in 14 overs when Kashif nicked Bas de Leede to first slip and he then trapped fellow Netherlands international Logan van Beek lbw. But D’Oliveira continued to score freely and brought up his half-century from 58 balls with seven fours. He had made 63 off 75 balls when bowled by a fine delivery from Matt Parkinson which spun sharply. Raine wrapped up the innings by dismissing Ben Allison and Dillon Pennington in the space of four balls to cue the start of the celebrations amongst the Durham players.Openers Lees and Michael Jones survived four overs before bad light halted play with three overs remaining.

Georgia Adams stars with bat and ball as Vipers cling on in thriller

Armitage century in vain as Diamonds fall three runs short in valiant 262-run chase

ECB Reporters Network05-Sep-2023Georgia Adams starred with bat and ball as the Southern Vipers defeated the Northern Diamonds by three runs in a pulsating finish to an entertaining Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy game at South Northumberland Cricket Club.Adams made 82 as the Vipers set a challenging total of 261 for eight from their 50 overs but Diamonds skipper Hollie Armitage struck a fine century to take her side within a whisker of their target. The result keeps the Vipers well in contention for a third-place finish – and the final play-off spot – while the Diamonds also remain the mix as the competition heads towards an exciting climax later this month.Lauren Winfield-Hill and Sterre Kalis made an excellent start to the Diamonds run chase, posting 52 in the powerplay with Winfield-Hill hitting five boundaries to reach a run-a-ball 29 but fell lbw to Ava Lee from the penultimate ball of the tenth over.Kalis struck the ball powerfully in making 37 before falling lbw to Adams, with the Diamonds 98 for two in the 19th over but Armitage took over the run-scoring mantle to reach a 59-ball half century that kept the Diamonds in the hunt, and she found good support from the middle order as the hosts continued to close in on their target.Emma Marlow lent great support in a third-wicket partnership of 61 before she was brilliantly caught and bowled by Nancy Harman for 20 leaving the Diamonds needing 103 off 100 balls.Rebecca Duckworth helped Armitage add 44 for the fourth wicket but pulled Alice Monaghan to Harman at deep midwicket for 23 with need 59 off 52 balls.Leah Dobson chipped in with a valuable 20 in a 51-run partnership with Armitage who batted superbly to reach her second Women’s List A century from 101 balls including 11 fours. The Vipers hung on, taking key wickets at crucial times, to leave the match evenly poised with 8 runs required from the final over. And Georgia Elwiss clinched the victory with six excellent deliveries, bowling Dobson off the second and only conceding five singles with Armitage left unbeaten on 106.The Diamonds made an early breakthrough after Adams had won the toss when Lizzie Scott produced a great delivery that nipped back to bowl Abi Norgrove for 6 and have the Vipers on 18 for one in the fifth over. The visitors responded in positive fashion with Ella McCaughan and Adams compiling an excellent 109-run partnership across 24 overs that formed the bedrock of the Vipers innings.McCaughan drove nicely either side of the wicket to move along steadily alongside her skipper before offering a return catch from a strong drive back to Grace Hall after making 47.Adams was quickly into her stride striking two boundaries from her first seven balls faced, and regularly punished anything short or wide. Off spinner Katie Levick was driven for a straight six to add to the eleven fours struck in a classy innings of 82 off 91 balls. It took an excellent yorker from Phoebe Turner to end Adams’ innings when she looked well-set and leave the Vipers on 169 for three in the 37th over, but some excellent contributions from the middle and lower order saw a further 92 runs added from the final 81 deliveries.Elwiss made 22 before edging an attempted cut off Hall to wicketkeeper Winfield-Hill while Emily Windsor kept the visitors’ momentum going with a well-constructed 39 off 38 balls during the closing overs and Rhianna Southby contributed an unbeaten 15 off 6 balls. The Diamonds attack – who lost Jessica Woolston to injury after the seamer had only completed five overs – bowled with commendable determination on a swelteringly hot day and were rewarded with late wickets as the Vipers finished on 261 for eight, with Hall taking four for 46 and Scott three for 33.That total looked slightly under par and the Diamonds came so close to chasing it down.
