Liverpool’s top summer centre-back target ranks bottom 5% for aerial duels

Liverpool are believed to have “serious interest” in signing a Premier League player this summer, but it could be an odd move for the Reds going by their usual scouting criteria.

Liverpool plan for summer after another quiet transfer window

The January transfer window has ended with the Reds making no new signings, which may cause an element of frustration among the fanbase, especially following a relatively quiet time of things in the summer, too.

Arne Slot can look at both the Premier League and Champions League tables and argue why he doesn’t need reinforcements, but that hasn’t stopped Liverpool being linked with fresh faces for future moves, with Lyon youngster Rayan Cherki one such player who has been mentioned as an option for the Merseysiders.

Olympique Lyonnais' RayanCherkiin action with Fenerbahce's Dusan Tadic and Fenerbahce's Sebastian Szymanski

Meanwhile, Red Star Belgrade teenager Andrija Maksimovic has also been mentioned as an option for the Reds of late, being looked at as a long-term signing, considering he is still only 17 years of age. In fact, Liverpool are even thought to have made a bid last month.

There is of course also the threat of all three of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold walking out the Anfield exit door this summer, which would require a massive overhaul, and the Reds’ top centre-back target if Van Dijk goes has been revealed.

Liverpool have "serious interest" in 6-foot centre-back

According to a new report from Caught Offside, Liverpool have “serious interest” in signing Nottingham Forest centre-back Murillo this summer and the player is open to joining if a fee can be agreed.

On that note, the 22-year-old’s current club are demanding £80m for his services, which would be a full circle moment given the report touts him as a replacement for £75m man Van Dijk, should the legendary Dutchman not sign a new deal and depart on a free transfer at the end of the campaign.

Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson celebrates scoring their first goal with Nikola Milenkovic andMurillo

Murillo has undoubtedly played a key role in Forest enjoying such an impressive season, impressing at the heart of the defence and being lauded by Kenny Cunningham, who has said of him in the past: “We’ve spoken about him after three of four of these Forest performances and it’s amazing, I think he’s only six foot, maybe six one, he’s wide, he’s so confident and you really feel like he’s got a strong personality.”

Murillo doesn’t feel like the right fit for Liverpool, however, which would arguably make signing him a bizarre decision by the Premier League leaders. Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate were signed because of both their aerial dominance and ability on the ball, and the statistics show that the Reds pair are far superior to the Forest man, as the below table highlights.

Murillo is also in the bottom five percentile for aerial duels won when compared across the big five leagues, according to FBref, as well as the bottom two percentile for passing accuracy, so this could feel like fitting a square peg into a round hole given how Michael Edwards has scouted defenders in the past.

Man Utd join race for £21m wonderkid who may go straight into Amorim’s team

Manchester United have now joined the race for an “exciting” wonderkid who they believe could go straight into the starting XI, according to a report.

Red Devils eyeing a winger

In truth, it could take a huge overhaul of the squad if Man United are going to start competing for the top honours once again, given that they are now 15th in the Premier League table after Sunday’s defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

Amad Diallo has been one of the only shining lights in a poor side this season, with the right-winger bagging six goals and six assists in the Premier League, however the 22-year-old could now be set to miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury.

In the summer, Ruben Amorim is hoping to take the burden off Diallo by bringing in additional options on the wing, and the manager has identified a number of targets, including Sporting CP’s Geovany Quenda, with talks now believed to be progressing.

A move for Quenda could make perfect sense, given that Amorim will be well-aware of the 17-year-old’s abilities from his time in Portugal, but he is not the only young winger on the shortlist.

Manchester United manager RubenAmorim

According to a report from On The Minute, Man United have now joined the race for Nordsjaelland winger Sindre Walle Egeli, having watched the winger in action on a number of occasions this season.

While the 18-year-old is considered a signing for the future, there is a feeling he could come straight into Amorim’s side and play an important role from the off.

There is set to be competition for Walle Egeli’s signature from a whole host of Premier League clubs, however, with the likes of Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest also being named as potential suitors.

Back in September, Nordsjaelland were thought to be holding out for £21m, however the Danish side’s asking price may have risen since then.

Amorim is in desperate need of goals and INEOS have an eye on a player who has no problem in that department.

ByBrett Worthington Feb 17, 2025 Walle Egeli showing promising signs in Denmark

It has been a real breakthrough season for the Norwegian in the Danish Superliga, picking up five goals and two assists in 17 outings and establishing himself as a regular starter despite still being a teenager.

Former youth coach Peder Jalland will not be surprised the Larvik-born right-winger has been in and amongst the goals, having praised him for his shooting ability earlier in his career, saying: “He has always had some abilities in the final third in relation to shooting.

“The ability in the box, to show up and be in the right place, and a surprisingly good right foot, which he sometimes forgets himself! He has some abilities there that are special. (Egeli as a player is) very exciting, one I have not seen very often.”

Of course, impressing in Denmark does not necessarily indicate Walle Egeli will be able to become a regular starter for United right off the bat, but he is certainly showing promising signs, and it will be interesting to see how the move develops in the summer.

Romano: Everton make "two proposals" to sign "dangerous" 22 y/o attacker

A foreign club have “received two proposals” from Everton ahead of the potential signing of a “dangerous” player at the club, according to a fresh claim from Fabrizio Romano.

Everton transfer news

The Blues are impressing greatly under David Moyes, with the Scot completely turning things around since replacing Sean Dyche as manager last month. Saturday’s 4-0 win at home to Leicester City further suggested that they won’t be in danger of relegation from the Premier League this season.

Everton could look to do some late business in the January transfer window, too, with Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi linked with a move to Goodison Park. He has found it tough to enjoy regular starts in 2024/25, due to the inspired form of Chris Wood leading the line.

The Merseysiders are also believed to have been given the opportunity to sign AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze, with the Serie A giants in need of generating funds to ease their finances. They are far from the only club to be in the race, though.

Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff has had to make do with a squad role this season, falling down the pecking order, and the Englishman is reportedly open to the idea of moving to Everton late in the day.

Everton make contact over "dangerous" attacker

Taking to X, Romano claims that Freiburg have “received two proposals” from Everton for attacking midfielder Merlin Rohl, as they look to strike a deal before Monday’s deadline, but his current club have turned them down and are set to keep the player after talks.

It appears as though Everton will be unsuccessful in their attempts to snap up the 22-year-old, but if things change suddenly, he could be a fantastic addition for Moyes.

Rohl is a young player with so much long-term potential, having already bagged nine goal contributions (three goals and six assists) in 50 appearances for Freiburg.

He hasn’t been without admirers over the years, too, with Antonio Di Salvo describing him as “dangerous” and Christian Streich saying of him: “Merlin’s taking big strides after his injury troubles. He’s got pace, great movement. He can be a real difference-maker, and he completely identifies with the club.”

While Everton’s aforementioned 4-0 triumph over Leicester suggests that all is well in an attacking sense, more firepower is definitely required in the final third, which is where Rohl could be an ideal signing.

Predominantly an attacking midfielder, the German can also excel on the right wing, so he would be a versatile addition who could help take the Blues up another gear. Should a transfer not happen in this window, they should look to bring him in this summer instead.

U.S. men's national team winger Haji Wright and Coventry City fell to Sunderland in the EFL Championship promotion playoffs Tuesday evening, 3-2 across two legs.

Leg one saw Sunderland take a 2-1 advantage on the road in Coventry, however, the stormed back at Sunderland's ground to force extra-time courtesy of a 75th-minute strike from Ephron Mason-Clark. The strike leveled things up at 2-2 aggregate, but gave Coventry a 1-0 lead come the end of regulation. The goal, smashed in off a brilliant cross from Milan Van Ewijk, just went over the head of Wright, before being put into the back of the net.

After a highly-contested 30 minutes of extra time, Sunderland earned a corner kick with what became the final play of the game, and defender Daniel Ballard smashed it home off the post in the 121st minute of the match to claim victory and clinch a berth in the promotion playoff final against Sheffield United.

With the loss, Wright and Frank Lampard's men will remain in the English Championship for yet another season.

Wright's 2024-25 season with the has officially come to a close, with the 27-year-old scoring 12 goals and recording one assist in Championship play across 21 starts in 27 appearances. The winger missed a large chunk of the season from November to March after suffering an ankle injury while playing for Coventry, but returned to action in March in his first minutes under Lampard after his November appointment by the club.

In 12 regular season matches upon return from injury, he scored five goals, but across both playoff matches against the , he was blanked in front of the net.

Internationally, Wright has 10 appearances with the USMNT, where he has scored four goals and recorded one assist.

Wright will look to see if his name is announced as a part of Mauricio Pochettino's CONCACAF Gold Cup roster this summer. The U.S. roster will be announced in early June, and if his name is on it, he will earn his second call-up under Mauricio Pochettino.

Sunderland could have their biggest talent since Amad in “one man machine"

Even though they have fallen short of the automatic promotion places in the Championship ever since a crushing late loss away at Leeds United, Regis Le Bris’ Sunderland should still be pleased they’re in the playoff positions.

Just last season, the Wearside outfit slumped to a very disappointing 16th placed finish, but now look nailed on to be competing in the lottery of the playoffs come the close of the enthralling season.

Sunderland manager RegisLeBris on the touchline

The last time Sunderland entered the playoffs, they fell at the semi final stages to Luton Town, but the exploits of loan ace Amad Diallo are still remembered to this day as a standout takeaway from that near-miss campaign.

Amad's standout season at Sunderland

Before going on to make a name for himself at parent employers Manchester United, a far more raw Amad had to cut his teeth out on loan, with the Stadium of Light proving to be a perfect environment for the Ivorian to strut his stuff.

Indeed, from 42 total clashes, the now 22-year-old would manage to fire home 14 strikes to put his team into playoff contention, which included screamers like this one against Wigan Athletic hammering the back of the net on a regular basis.

Sunderland have since tried to tempt the flamboyant winger back to his old haunt, but the United number 16 has never returned back, with his Red Devils career taking flight this season with 12 goal contributions coming his way, before an ankle injury stopped him in his tracks.

Whilst Ruben Amorim will feel downbeat about this situation, Le Bris and Co will believe they’ve struck gold on another star back at the Stadium of Light who is as big a talent as their once beloved loanee.

Amad Diallo for Sunderland

Sunderland's biggest talent since Amad

This star’s tale at the club also began on a loan deal, but unlike Amad upping and leaving, Sunderland managed to tie down this exceptional attacker to a full-time deal for just £3.3m.

That fee already looks like a bargain amount to pay when you consider Wilson Isidor has been leading the line with consistent venom ever since joining the ranks, having made Ethan Ampadu look like a fool in that recent contest at Elland Road with his unwavering strength to powerfully hand his side the lead.

This stunning opener – which ultimately proved to be a positive moment amidst a gutting loss – took Isidor’s goal haul for the season all the way up to a hefty 12, with Sky Sports journalist Dougie Critchley even going as far to label the skilful but strong striker as a “one man machine.”

Capable of scoring an audacious effort much like Amad too, everyone at Sunderland will be hoping these heroics continue as the Black Cats potentially return to the promised land off the back of his golden output.

He will definitely be uttered in the same breath as the memorable Amad if he can help his side leap back up to the Premier League, with more perhaps coming from the Frenchman when the heat is ramped up, considering he has missed a high 16 big chances this season despite his strong goalscoring numbers.

Whatever does happen, Sunderland will just be glad they’ve won such a captivating star on the cheap, instead of just allowing the loanee to return back to their parent side.

Down the line, Isidor could be worth far more than his modest £3.3m fee, especially if he helps the long isolated Black Cats get back on the footballing map with promotion come May.

Shikha Pandey credits Belinda Clark for comeback: She made me feel worthy, special

Shikha Pandey, the India allrounder, has credited former Australia captain Belinda Clark for making her feel “worthy” and “special” during her time away from the national team.In September 2022, Clark facilitated a three-week stint for Pandey in Brisbane, where she played club cricket. That stint nearly paved way for a maiden Women’s Big Bash deal with Brisbane Heat, but Pandey had to turn it down due to her commitments with Goa, her state team.Four months since a memorable stint in Australia, Pandey’s immediate future looks a lot brighter now. She is set to make a comeback after 15 months, having been included in India’s squad for the upcoming T20I tri-series in South Africa and the T20 World Cup next month.Related

“The one thing that I like about Belinda is that there was less sympathy and more empathy,” Pandey told Scroll.in. “She listened to my story and then worked with me to set different goals – not just cricket related, but outside the game as well.”We worked on my leadership traits, we discussed different podcasts, we worked on how I could make a difference by being in the state side and she made me feel worthy; special, even.”Pandey highlighted a significant shift in mindset as one of her major takeaways from being mentored by Clark. It helped develop a “squad mentality” by promoting a “more inclusive culture” within the teams she turned up for while being away from the national team.”The sessions that I had with her helped me immensely to bring in changes in my team environment. We brought in the squad mentality, started believing more in positive reinforcement, we understood the importance of creating a psychologically safe environment in which players feel valued, and we also started to celebrate our differences and tried to create a more inclusive culture.”Belinda Clark’s statue at the SCG is the first of a female cricketer anywhere in the world•Cricket Australia via Getty Images

“I remember in one of the early sessions, Belinda said something on the lines of how the situations we are facing don’t define us, but what we choose to do in reply to those situations and the decisions that we take to come out of those situations, define us. She kind of made me realise that I had so much more to offer to the game and giving up was not an option.”Pandey believes those conversations helped her embrace her vulnerabilities and accept her struggles.”She told me that it was okay to be different,” Pandey explained. “As long as I was being me, it was fine. As a professional athlete sometimes you are so scared of struggles and low phases you try not to do anything that could risk your ‘safety’ in a sense.”But she explained that you should be willing to experiment, and you need to understand that you will be vulnerable and that’s okay. It’s okay to fail in the pursuit of excellence, that’s how we grow. We need to learn to own our mistakes. Those conversations opened up a lot of things for me.”I feel so assured of myself right now knowing someone like Belinda Clark has my back. I have kept in touch with her throughout and after I got selected I sent her a message and spoke to her the next day. I just wanted to say ‘thank you’ because she was with me at a very low phase and gave me huge confidence to help build myself back up.”Sometimes when things like non-selection happen you start doubting yourself and your abilities so much that you become your own enemy. Knowing that she is in my corner, that she feels I am really good, helped me more than I can say.”
