Officials sent to club as Chelsea insistently push for £13m January signing

Chelsea are alleged to be in serious pursuit of an African international, but the clock is ticking to get a deal done as they face stiff competition.

Enzo Maresca requests new midfielder at Chelsea transfer meeting

Alongside his desire to bring a fresh attacking option to Stamford Bridge, manager Enzo Maresca has reportedly requested the addition of a fresh face for his engine room.

Chelsea hold fresh talks to sign £85m striker after request from Maresca

The Italian had a meeting with Stamford Bridge officials after their defeat to Man City.

These internal talks between Maresca and the Chelsea hierarchy occurred after their 3-1 defeat to Man City on Saturday, according to reliable journalist Simon Phillips, with the Italian making his requests for new signings clear behind-the-scenes.

“SPTC sources heard that there was a meeting after the City game involving some of the decision makers at the club, as well as Maresca,” said Phillips (via his Substack).

“The head coach reiterated that he still wants a new striker to come in this month. He also explained again how he feels he is still missing a certain profile in midfield, and would like more experience (4th manager in a row to mention midfield and experience).

“Remember, he already said at the start of the window that he would like midfield cover, a new striker, and a centre back in the door. I guess the centre back was a Trevoh Chalobah recall, but he is still missing two of what he says he needs.

“We’ve also heard that Maresca feels like he has coached a lot of wins recently, but finishing and mistakes at the back have cost us.”

In an effort to grant one of Maresca’s wishes, Chelsea are still believed to be keeping an eye on Manchester United starlet Kobbie Mainoo, amid his contract talks at Old Trafford, but another player they’re targeting is lesser-known Hellas Verona star Reda Belahyane.

Juventus' Douglas Luiz in action with Hellas Verona's Reda Belahyane.

The Morocco international is a mainstay for the Serie A outfit, with his sold performances attracting interest from west London.

Sky Sports transfer reporter Gianluca Di Marzio has previously reported that Chelsea are attempting a January deal for Belahyane, but they’ll need to hurry, as it is also believed that the 20-year-old has agreed personal terms with Rennes (Fabrizio Romano).

Chelsea insistently pushing to sign Reda Belahyane

Di Marzio, taking to X with another update this week, claims that Chelsea are insistently pushing to sign Belahyane and maintain their interest – with club scouts running the rule over his latest performance against Venezia on Monday.

Belahyane has been tipped for stardom, with Verona head coach Paolo Zanetti calling him a “stratospheric” player already. “Belahyane is a stratospheric player in the brain and soul,” said Zanetti.

“I don’t want to praise him too much but he is a boy who is 20 years old and has an incredible margin [for improvement]. I have seen few young players like him.”

Their next Chris Wood: Leeds step up move to land “ball-striking monster”

Leeds United will be hoping that their attacking firepower can help carry them to promotion this season. The Whites have been in good form, and currently sit top of the table in the Championship, but it is not going to be a straightforward title race. Although they have a game in hand, just one point separates them and fourth place Sunderland.

Joel Piroe has been fantastic for Daniel Farke’s side this season and has ten goals and five assists in all competitions. Brendan Aaronson and Daniel James have seven goals apiece across all competitions, with Welshman James grabbing four assists and USA international Aaronson notching up two.

Incredibly, to add to the quality in forward areas, Leeds are plotting a move for another exciting striker.

Leeds target new striker

The player in question here is Southampton centre-forward Cameron Archer. The Saints attacker has only been at the club for a few months, after moving from Aston Villa in the summer, but could be on the move again.

Transfer Focus

According to an exclusive report from Football League World, the Championship leaders are ‘planning to table a new bid’ for Archer in the coming hours, after an initial bid was rejected by the Saints.

It remains unclear what type of bid the Whites will place, although the side bottom of the Premier League initially rejected a loan bid.

There is no clarity on whether Leeds will aim to sign Archer permanently or make a move on loan, just that they are ‘planning on making a new offer for the forward’ in an attempt to lure him to Elland Road.

Why Archer could be a good signing

It has certainly been a tough season for Archer in the Premier League. He has played 21 games in total for Southampton, scoring just two goals, although gave his side the lead in a game away to Arsenal. The Saints went on to lose 3-1, however.

If there is one thing that Archer could bring to the Leeds squad, it is even more goalscoring pedigree in the English second tier. He has had previous loan spells in the Championship with Preston North End and, more recently, Middlesbrough.

In that time, the former England under-21 international found the back of the net 18 times and registered seven assists in 40 appearances for both clubs. That included two goals and two assists in the same game for Boro, a 5-1 thrashing of Norwich City.

Should the Whites sign Archer, it could be a repeat of the deal to bring Chris Wood to Elland Road. He signed from Leicester City for an undisclosed fee back in July 2015, as a 23-year-old, just like Archer is.

Wood is loving life in the Premier League this season for Nottingham Forest, but really became a deadly striker as a Leeds player.

He played 88 times for the Yorkshire side, scoring 44 goals and grabbing nine assists in 88 appearances, having previously endured numerous stints across the EFL, much like Archer.

There are certainly similarities between the two players, more so than the fact they would be the same age joining Leeds if Archer was to make the move. In fact, statistical comparisons can be drawn via FBref, with the pair deemed to be similar players in the Premier League.

This season per game in the top-flight, there are clear similarities between the players, despite the fact Wood has 14 goals to Archer’s two. For example, the Saints star is averaging an expected goals tally of 0.38xG and 1.12 shot-creating actions, compared to Wood’s 0.4xG and 1.33 shot-creating actions.

Archer, a “ball-striking monster”, as football analyst Ben Mattinson described him, could be the difference maker for Leeds. He is proven in the Championship and could try and replicate what Wood did in that famous white shirt all those years ago.

Be it a loan or a permanent deal, this late move could be exactly what the Whites need to help in their quest for promotion.

Newcastle hit gold on "machine" who’s now worth more than Cunha & Marmoush

Eddie Howe’s season has been something of a rollercoaster. The frustration from a disappointing end to the summer transfer window seeped onto the field and Newcastle United toiled through the opening months.

But now the Magpies are into the Carabao Cup final, have set up a date with Brighton in the FA Cup fifth round and are pushing for a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and Bruno Guimaraes celebrate after the match

Let’s have a look at some of Tyneside’s standout stars, those making it happen.

Newcastle's best players this season

Let’s get the obvious one out of the way: Alexander Isak has been sensational at the front of the Newcastle ship, posting 19 goals and five assists from 29 matches in all competitions. Alan Shearer hailed him as “world-class” and it would take a brave fan to dispute it.

Alexander Isak scores for Newcastle

Jacob Murphy deserves some praise too, having been a consistent source of energy and output from the right flank after efforts to sign a new winger failed during the summer.

Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton continue to impress in the middle of the park, but Sandro Tonali’s emergence after a challenging and disrupted 2023/24 season has been wonderful to witness.

However, Anthony Gordon’s ceaseless pursuit of greatness has seen him become one of the Premier League’s standout wingers. Given that he came close to leaving St. James’ Park last summer, it’s brilliant to feel the effect of Howe retaining his services.

Newcastle have hit the jackpot on Anthony Gordon

When Newcastle signed Gordon from Everton for £45m in January 2023, many English football fans were unconvinced. It took him until the beginning of the 2023/24 campaign to get going, but now he’s firing on all cylinders.

Anthony Gordon celebrates for Newcastle

The Premier League is chock-full of talented wide players, with the likes of Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Matheus Cunha the men of the moment right now, but Gordon has been reliable and dangerous for nearly two years now, and Newcastle wouldn’t switch him for another.

Gordon was bestowed the honour of Newcastle’s 23/24 Player of the Season for his remarkable performances amid the club’s injury concerns. And he’s maintained his level, boding well for the future.

Though his output has decreased – Gordon averaged a goal involvement every 0.60 games in 2023/24 compared to 0.46 this term – the winger’s underlying data has remained largely intact, even proving to be a bit more potent with his creativity.

It’s a marker of his ability that the biggest institutions have taken note, with Liverpool being offered the Merseyside native last summer in a £75m deal, Fabrizio Romano confirming the interest.

Anthony Gordon

Some might say ‘English tax’, but Gordon is one of the finest wingers in Europe and has been hailed as a “machine on the pitch” and a “relentless monster” by journalist and content creator Sripad, illustrating Gordon’s matchless mentality.

It goes to show that he’s worth the money, with Marmoush, for example, joining Man City in a £59m deal last month and already claiming his first match ball.

Cunha’s also the talk of the town in Wolverhampton, with his fine goal at Anfield last weekend taking his tally to 12 goals from 24 Premier League games for his relegation-threatened side. The Brazilian reportedly has a £70m price tag at Molineux.

The £75m-rated Gordon is not only worth more than that pair but is also the real deal, an integral part of Howe’s system who could possibly get his mitts on some silverware before the end of the campaign.

Market Movers

He’s been worth every penny – and then some.

Journalist shares fresh Leeds transfer update on links to new £5m striker

A fresh update has now been forthcoming on Leeds United’s hunt for a new striker in the final hours of the transfer window as Daniel Farke looks to bolster his ranks for the second half of the Championship season.

Leeds lay down Championship marker

Leeds put seven past a sorry Cardiff City side to maintain their spot at the top of the Championship in their most recent outing, with the thrashing of the Bluebirds helping them continue their record as the highest scorers in the division.

Farke’s side are favourites to secure automatic promotion back to the Premier League after play-off heartbreak last season, and also boast the best goal difference and the second-fewest goals conceded as things stand, despite a series of injuries in midfield threatening to derail their campaign.

After the game, Farke admitted that his side were open to recruiting further in the January window despite their impressive form to date.

“We spoke quite openly about [how] I totally trust this group and if we go with this group, I’m confident that we can finish in a top position”, the Leeds boss explained.

“But I think also it’s our responsibility as key people in the club to explore if there is something that could improve the group a bit and make the probability higher that we are successful in the end. To find something where we think, okay, it’s a good addition that’s affordable, we will go for it, and if not, then not.”

Now, one journalist has offered an update on their hunt for a striker.

Leeds striker latest

Heading into the final hours of the transfer window, Cameron Archer remains Leeds’ priority signing, but there is little sign that Southampton will let him leave the club despite the Englishman struggling for game time at St Mary’s.

Leeds and 49ers now accept bid to sell "really strong" gem before deadline

The Whites have struck an agreement to sell a centre-back for an undisclosed fee.

ByDominic Lund Feb 2, 2025

The 23-year-old has started just 10 times so far this season, but is deemed an important squad player and that decision has forced Leeds to seemingly look elsewhere.

One player that hit the headlines was Chelsea youngster Marc Guiu, who arrived at Stamford Bridge for £5m in the summer but has failed to make an impression on their Premier League squad despite hitting six goals in six Conference League outings.

Chelsea's Marc Guiu celebrates

Leeds were linked with a potential move for the Spaniard on a temporary basis until the end of the season, with Chelsea thought to be considering letting him leave in search of additional game time away from west London.

However, a move to Elland Road seems unlikely, at least according to Ben Jacobs. The reporter explained that ‘Leeds are not considering a loan move’ for the former Barcelona youngster.

For Farke’s side, it seems very much like it will be Archer or no-one on deadline day.

Memories of 2016 lend edge to India-Bangladesh clash

Big picture

An India-Bangladesh contest in a T20 World Cup has potential to get fiery. Particularly if you remember what happened the last time these two sides met in the tournament. Many players involved in that 2016 game have retired, many others have moved on, but some remain. The memories of that contest are certainly fresh with both sets of fans. The players don’t forget such matches either.Bangladesh, though, wouldn’t like to talk about Bangalore 2016, while India would like to believe that they have evolved into a stronger outfit these days. Still, Wednesday’s clash has all the makings of a memorable contest given the stakes involved, and how the teams are coming to Adelaide after playing three matches each.India ran into some problems against South Africa as Lungi Ngidi exploited the Perth pitch quite well. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya got out trying to pull the ball, while KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda were loose outside the offstump. Only Suryakumar Yadav stood tall, finding little support at the other end as he tried to revive the innings with his vast shot-making. South Africa wobbled a bit with the bat but David Miller took them home, giving India a bit of a headache ahead of their last two matches in the Super 12s.Related

  • Rahul Dravid throws weight behind KL Rahul: 'He's really well suited for these kind of pitches'

  • Shakib downplays Bangladesh's chances: 'We're not here to win the World Cup'

  • Under-fire Shanto and Mustafizur finally come good

  • Deepak Hooda for Axar Patel, and no yorkers – why did India do that?

  • Suryakumar Yadav takes another step towards T20 greatness with Perth masterclass

But India have usually dominated Bangladesh, having lost just one T20I against them in all their encounters. They would want their top order to start firing, and leave the middle and lower order with just the big-hitting and not the rebuilding. India would also like to see their bowlers handle the latter overs better, particularly if they believe R Ashwin can be a handful against Bangladesh’s left-handers.Bangladesh, meanwhile, might feel they have already met pre-tournament expectations. They won against the Netherlands and Zimbabwe but got crushed by South Africa. While it has left them in a tough NRR situation, Bangladesh wouldn’t mind the afterglow of two hard-fought wins. The fact that they are going into the India game with a chance to still qualify for the semi-final will no doubt please them.Taskin Ahmed is the standout performer, having taken eight wickets in the Super 12s, including two Player-of-the-Match awards. Mustafizur Rahman and Hasan Mahmud have added to the fast-bowling form, coming up with important contributions in the three matches. Mustafizur’s return to form is particularly crucial for Bangladesh, who have waited patiently for the left-arm quick to come good this year.On the batting side, too, Bangladesh’s team management must have heaved a sigh of relief after Najmul Hossain Shanto made a career-best 71 against Zimbabwe. It was only the second fifty by a Bangladeshi opener this year. But the questions remain on how they finish the innings, with Nurul Hasan and Yasir Ali still unable to put together a strong showing with the bat.All in all, Wednesday promises to be another memorable contest, especially with the usual emotions and melodrama involved whenever these two sides have met in the last ten years. Both India and Bangladesh would however try to ignore all that, and the possibility of rain, to focus on the job at hand: get the two points.

In the spotlight

A string of three single-digit scores has everyone talking about KL Rahul. But don’t write him off as an out-of-form player just yet. Rahul’s last two innings before the T20 World Cup were fifties against South Africa. The main worry, however, is his 2022 numbers compared to the rest of his T20I career. He has the lowest average and strike-rate in a year, but Rahul could be just be one big knock away from turning a corner.Taskin Ahmed now has two Player-of-the-Match awards in this tournament, having played a big role in both those matches for Bangladesh. His twin strikes off the first two balls broke Netherlands’ back, while his three timely strikes held back a rampant Zimbabwe in Brisbane. Taskin, who made his T20I debut in the 2014 T20 World Cup, is making up for lost time after spending three years in the sidelines. He has now taken over the mantle of bowling attack leader with his bundle of wickets since last year.Bangladesh are still in contention to make the semi-finals following their dramatic win against Zimbabwe•AFP/Getty Images

Team news

Playing Yuzvendra Chahal could be a good idea against Bangladesh who traditionally don’t like facing legspin. But at the same time, India could well continue with Deepak Hooda as the extra batting and offspin option. Dinesh Karthik’s fitness is being monitored and a final decision will be taken tomorrow on whether he plays or not.India (probable): 1 KL Rahul, 2 Rohit Sharma (capt), 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Deepak Hooda, 5 Suryakumar Yadav, 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Dinesh Karthik (wk), 8 R Ashwin, 9 Mohammed Shami, 10 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 11 Arshdeep SinghEight batters looked superfluous against Zimbabwe as Shakib looked like he needed a fifth bowler. Pitch and conditions

The Adelaide Oval is traditionally a high-scoring ground in the Big Bash, particularly under lights. Sides batting first have averaged 170 batting first in night games. The problem, however, is that there’s rain forecast for the evening.

Stats and trivia

  • This is the first T20I between India and Bangladesh since their bilateral series three years ago.
  • India have won their only T20I at the Adelaide Oval, beating Australia by 37 runs here in 2016. Bangladesh have also won their only international match here, their famous 15-run win over England in the 2015 World Cup.
  • Suryakumar Yadav is on 935 runs in 2022, and is set to become the second men’s batter to get 1000-plus runs in a calendar year.

    Quotes

“India is the favourite team, they came here to win the World Cup. We are not favourites, we didn’t come here to win the World Cup. We know it very well that if we win against India, it will be called an upset. We will try to play our best cricket, and try to make an upset.”

  • Aston Villa enter race for "world class" £247k-p/w star who Emery rates

Aston Villa have now joined the race to sign a “world class” Portugal international, who Unai Emery believes could become a key part of his project, according to a report.

    Villa still pushing for Europe

Villa still remain in the hunt for the top four, sitting just six points behind Chelsea, but they have struggled to emulate last season’s form in the Premier League, perhaps as a result of the extra fixtures that come with playing in the Champions League.

As such, Emery strengthened his squad considerably in the January transfer window, bringing in big-name signings such as Marcus Rashford, Marco Asensio and Donyell Malen to bolster his attacking options.

In order to shore up the backline, centre-back Axel Disasi arrived on loan from Chelsea, while right-back Andres Garcia was signed from Levante, but there is a feeling the Villans still want to bring in an additional full-back in the summer.

Aston Villa make contact to sign two teenage talents ahead of the summer

Aston Villa are looking to win the Premier League race to sign two exciting young talents.

    ByBrett Worthington Feb 11, 2025

That is according to reports from Spain, which suggest Aston Villa have now entered the race to sign Joao Cancelo, who could be in line for a return to Europe after impressing for Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.

Cancelo’s performances in Saudi Arabia have attracted the attention of a number of clubs, including Manchester United and AC Milan, so there could be stiff competition for his signature this summer.

Al Hilal's JoaoCancelocelebrates scoring their second goal

Emery is clearly a big fan of the former Manchester City man, with the report revealing the Spanish manager believes he could be a key part of his project at Villa Park.

However, it remains to be seen whether the Midlands outfit would be able to tempt the full-back monetarily, given that he rakes in a whopping £247k-per-week at Al-Hilal.

Cancelo showing signs he is still "world class"

The Portugal international has played for some of Europe’s top clubs, spending time with Man City, Barcelona and Bayern Munich, during which time he has become well-known for his ability going forward.

Since signing for Al-Hilal, the 30-year-old continues to look promising from an attacking point of view, picking up two goals and 10 assists in 27 appearances in all competitions this season.

The former Barca man has been lauded as “world-class” by members of the media in the past, and his displays this season indicate he is still very much at that level, so it is exciting news Villa are now in the race for his signature.

The only potential stumbling block is seemingly the huge wages the right-back is on at Al-Hilal, and given that he is contracted until the summer of 2027, the Saudi side are not in a position where they will need to sell anytime soon.

If the opportunity arises to sign Cancelo, however, Villa should definitely pursue it, as he has proven himself at the highest level in the past, and continues to impress in the Saudi Pro League.
