India fight back through resolute Pujara, Rohit and Kohli

They still trail England by a sizeable chunk, but have kept the game alive through steadfast batting

Andrew Fidel Fernando27-Aug-20212:55

Harmison: Kohli could be the difference between an India comeback and England win

On day three, Headingley was the scene of a fightback. From India in general, whose openers battled through the early overs, resisted James Anderson, and whose top order lost only the wicket of KL Rahul in the first 47 overs they faced. From Cheteshwar Pujara in particular, who overcame a streak of 12 innings in which he did not pass 50 once, to finish the day as his team’s top-scorer, nine runs short of what would be his first century since January 2019.They still have a mountain to summit if they are to put any real pressure on England. They remain 139 runs in arrears at stumps, and crucially, will have to face the second new ball the moment play starts on day four. But at times on day three, their top order appeared comfortable on a surface that was not offering much in the way of seam movement, even if swing in the air was gleaned with the new ball. You suspect they would have to bat for most of day four – if not part way into day five, to really make England worried. But with the score at 215 for 2, their resistance has a start. Virat Kohli was largely untroubled during his unbeaten 45 as well.England will feel that perhaps their quicks were not menacing enough for long periods. Anderson did not glean the movement he had on day one, and occasionally strayed too far to leg as he went looking for big swing. They also only got nine overs out of Sam Curran, who was wayward and expensive, going at 4.44 an over.Craig Overton made the first breakthrough, when he had Rahul caught brilliantly at second slip by a diving Jonny Bairstow off the last ball of the first session, but it was Ollie Robinson who was England’s best, frequently nibbling balls back into the India batter’s pads. Rahul was given out in Robinson’s fifth over, but managed to overturn that decision on review (the ball was just sliding down leg). In his tenth over, another close shout against Rohit Sharma was (correctly) turned down. He’d eventually get Rohit lbw for 59, but was in good rhythm right through the day, conceding only 40 from his 18 overs. But it was Pujara, whose place in the team was under serious scrutiny, that produced Friday’s definitive performance. Having arrived at the crease without a fifty since February, and a century in over two-and-a-half years, he was done a favour by the England seamers, who kept straying too far down leg – balls Pujara, even in this form – whipped emphatically to the legside boundary. After his first 13 balls, Pujara had three boundaries and 14 runs to his name, and appeared somewhat at ease. Suddenly, he was leaving judiciously, defending resolutely, while waiting for the loose deliveries, which he gleefully punished. Of his first 32 runs, 28 came from boundaries. Only two of those seven boundaries came on the off side.Rohit Sharma goes airborne to uppercut Ollie Robinson for a six•Associated Press

Rohit, meanwhile, was himself defending and leaving happily, as the pair batted out a wicketless second session. He didn’t get as many loose legside deliveries as Pujara, but when he got balls he could hit, he wasn’t shy about hitting out. Late in the first session, a slightly wide bouncer from Robinson disappeared over the third man boundary, having been uppercut – India’s only six so far in the match. He was outscored by Pujara in the course of their 82-run stand, but he got to his half-century off the 125th ball he faced. He’d seemed the most comfortable of all India’s batters in the first two sessions, but nevertheless, could not push on much further after the tea break. He reviewed the lbw decision, having missed a slightly angled ball from Robinson, but ball tracker showed it to be shaving leg stump.Kohli, himself struggling for form, won his first battle with Anderson – who had got him in the first innings – when he clipped him through backward square, and smoked him through extra cover three balls later, early in his innings. At no stage did he really look to impose himself, though. Taking cues from Rohit and Pujara, perhaps, he worked the singles and twos, and largely waited for the wayward balls – Curran providing more than his share of them – to register boundaries. As the skies had been gloomy right through the day, floodlights had been on since the middle session, and when the umpires told Joe Root only slow bowlers could operate after the end of the 69th over, Root brought himself into the attack. Root’s intention, perhaps, was to rush a few overs and get England to that 80 over mark, when the second new ball would be available, and they could take it at the top of day four, their seamer’s having had their night’s rest. The umpires allowed Root and Moeen to bowl until the 80th over, but these were largely bloodless overs; India’s batters were happy to keep gradually adding to their scores. The new-ball showdown awaits first thing on Saturday.

Man Utd board eyeing "outstanding" coach Chelsea nearly hired before Maresca

The Manchester United board are admirers of a Premier League manager who was nearly hired by Chelsea before they appointed Enzo Maresca, according to a new report. Speculation is expected to grow over the coming days and weeks as the future of Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford looks increasingly uncertain.

INEOS concerned with Erik ten Hag's handling of £155,000-a-week Man Utd duo

A new behind-the-scenes claim has emerged.

ByHenry Jackson Oct 7, 2024 Erik ten Hag’s Man Utd future

The Dutchman has come under severe pressure in the last 10 days or so, as his side have failed to beat FC Twente, Tottenham Hotspur, Porto, and Aston Villa. The games against Porto and Villa were expected to play a big role in what happens in his tenure, and while he didn’t lose them, they were far from convincing.

There has been no guarantee that the boss will be sacked in this international break, but there have been no guarantees that he won’t either. Indeed, the Premier League side are already being linked with potential new managers, one of which is Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso.

Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel

Another name is Thomas Tuchel, with reports stating that Man United are lining up a move for Tuchel in the near future. The German has been linked with the Old Trafford hotseat before, as he held talks with the hierarchy over the summer about possibly becoming their new manager, but nothing materialised.

There is now a new name that has emerged on the club’s radar, and he is someone that United will be well aware of, as he manages in the Premier League.

Man Utd admirers of "outstanding" coach who Chelsea nearly hired

According to talkSPORT, the Manchester United board are admirers of Brentford manager Thomas Frank, as well as Tuchel. Frank has been the manager of Brentford since October 2018, when he was promoted to the role after being assistant manager since December 2016.

Frank guided the Bees to the Premier League from the Championship, and he has now established the London side as a mid-table team on England’s biggest stage. The Dane has taken charge of over 100 games in the Premier League, 41 of which he has won, averaging 1.27 points per game.

This report states that Frank, who has been labelled “outstanding” by pundit Troy Deeney, is now among the candidates should United decide to part ways with ten Hag. The Red Devils are holding pre-planned summit meetings over the next two days, with ten Hag’s future expected to be discussed.

United are said to have drawn up a three-man shortlist to replace ten Hag, with Gareth Southgate also a contender alongside Frank and Tuchel. This isn’t the first big job that Frank has been linked with, as the Dane was also a contender for the Chelsea job, but the Blues eventually went with Maresca.

Rangers hit gold on £8m ace who’s worth more than Dessers & Igamane in 2024

Glasgow Rangers saw a glimpse of the future during their 1-0 Premiership win on Sunday lunchtime, as Hamza Igamane demonstrated why Philippe Clement spent money on bringing him to Ibrox during the summer.

Cyriel Dessers may have started the game, even grabbing an assist during the opening ten minutes, yet his performance was underwhelming once again.

Igamane replaced the Nigerian forward with 25 minutes to go, injecting a much-needed spark into the Rangers attack.

He demonstrated some neat touches and flicks while coming close to grabbing an assist. Despite not making his first appearance for the Light Blues until the Old Firm defeat at the start of the month, there are certainly plenty of claims for the young Moroccan to start against Dundee this weekend.

This area has been one of concern since Alfredo Morelos departed in the summer of 2023, as the likes of Dessers and Danilo have failed to show that they can be trusted to lead the line.

Yes, Dessers may have scored 27 goals for Rangers, but he lacks a certain ruthlessness in the penalty area. Danilo has been unlucky with injuries, which have hampered his Gers career so far.

Igamane and Dessers’ market valuation in 2024

The two strikers are at opposite ends of their careers, with Dessers about to turn 30, while Igamane is still in the embryonic stage.

Cyriel Dessers

This is, of course, represented in their current market valuations. The 29-year-old cost the Light Blues £4.5m last summer, but he is now worth £4m according to Transfermarkt, which is a slight drop from what the club paid for him.

As he gets older, this value will continue to deteriorate, especially if he continues to deliver subpar performances for the club.

Igamane joined from AS FAR this summer, as Clement sought to attract youth talent to the squad, although he has only been seen twice during his spell at the club.

The 21-year-old is currently valued at just £840k by Transfermarkt, but unlike Dessers, this should increase exponentially as time goes on.

Once he builds up some match fitness, the centre-forward will be in the mood to score plenty of goals for the Light Blues. If he lives up to expectations, there is no doubt Igamane can become a vital player in the coming months.

Clement will surely make a profit on the striker should he deliver on his early promise, but he isn’t the first striker that joined the club with plenty of promise, yet ultimately failed to shine…

One name that stands out is Tore Andre Flo, who joined the Gers way back in November 2000 for a club-record transfer fee.

How much Rangers paid for Tore Andre Flo

Dick Advocaat returned the club to the summit of Scottish football during his first two seasons in charge, winning five of the six trophies available to him.

When Martin O’Neil was appointed as Celtic manager in the summer of 2000, the Dutchman finally met his match. The 6-2 Old Firm defeat during the early weeks of the new season saw the Parkhead side take advantage in the title race, and they wouldn’t relinquish it.

Former Rangers striker Tore Andre Flo.

Needing to do something to stop the charge, Advocaat spent £12m on signing Flo from Chelsea to Scotland, a truly lavish amount at the time, with the fee still standing as the transfer record for the Ibrox side.

A debut goal against none other than Celtic certainly helped endear the Norwegian to the supporters, especially as it was during a 5-1 victory for the Gers, yet they failed to win a trophy that season.

This maiden strike helped build confidence early for the former Chelsea hitman, who went on to score a further 12 goals.

The 2001/02 season saw Flo emerge as a key player for the club, especially under Alex McLeish, who took over from Advocaat in December 2001.

Former Rangers striker Tore Andre Flo.

Indeed, Flo managed to find the back of the net 25 times in 46 games for the Light Blues across all competitions, which included two goals in the League Cup final win over Ayr United – Rangers’ first trophy since the 2000 Scottish Cup.

Hopes were high that the following campaign would see a similar return. Surprisingly, however, McLeish offloaded him to Sunderland in August 2002.

Despite making a loss on the player, judging by inflation, McLeish certainly hit the jackpot on the striker.

How much Rangers sold Tore Andre Flo for in 2024 money

Despite spending less than two years in Scotland, when Sunderland came in with a bid of around £8m after just a few games of the 2002/03 season, it was evident McLeish was going to cash in.

In 2024, however – with Totally Money having adjusted for inflation over the years – this £8m transfer fee would now be colossal.

Indeed, the Norwegian would be worth a staggering £38m if he made the same move just now.

Considering he went on to struggle during his spell back in the Premier League, the decision to sell him began to look like a wise one from the manager.

The Light Blues went on to win the treble that campaign too, yet more evidence that Flo’s departure was a good idea, especially considering how much the club relied on his goals the previous season.

This hefty valuation when accounting for inflation means Flo is worth nearly ten times as much as both Igamane and Dessers combined, showcasing how good a player he was during his peak years.

While Dessers won’t be sold for a profit, Igamane will be hoping to secure a move to a top five league if he lives up to the vast hype that has been generated, not only on his arrival, but also due to his impressive cameos in the previous two games.

Flo may not have been everyone’s cup of tea, but his tally of 38 goals across only 70 games proves he was certainly effective in front of goal.

Guardiola's City face Neville's Salford in the third round of the FA Cup this weekend. The former Manchester United right-back has carved out a successful career in punditry, working with Sky Sports, as well as the BBC and ITV during major tournaments. But Guardiola insists he could never pass judgement on his peers.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Neville joked that Guardiola could be sacked if City lose to Salford amid a terrible run of form that has seen them drop into sixth in the Premier League. They are currently 12 points behind leaders Liverpool, and the Catalan has already conceded the title.

  • WHAT GUARDIOLA SAID

Guardiola was asked if he could go into punditry and replied: "I don't think I'm going to do that. I am cautious. I couldn't make a comment that could hurt my colleagues. I know how difficult this job is, how difficult it is, and I don’t want to pretend sitting there.

"It's so unpredictable and many things happen. I (could) hurt someone sometimes with the delivery. We can agree and disagree. My job is here, their job is there.

"I wanted to defend my club, it's not personal. I know how difficult it is. I was a football player before, now a manager and our business is so complicated and so unpredictable, I don’t want to hurt my colleagues in a position to do it. Maybe it will happen in the future – but honestly I don't think so."

Manchester City boss Guardiola dropped a huge bombshell in a recent press conference, revealing that Walker has asked to explore a move away from the Premier League champions. AC Milan have shown the most interest in the veteran defender since the news broke and now claim that the Rosseneri are aiming to finalise a move 'early this week'.

New Milan advisor Ibrahimovic is thought to be the driving force behind the push for Walker and the former Sweden international is more than happy to hand the 34-year-old a two-and-a-half-year deal at San Siro. It is also understood that Walker will not just be there to make up the numbers, he is expected to push for a starting spot and wrestle the right-back position from former Tottenham man Emerson Royal or Davide Calabria.

DID YOU KNOW?

Walker has recently been welcomed back into his family home with his wife Annie Kilner and reports suggest their marriage could be on the mend. A move to Milan would shake things up again and possibly provide an opportunity to turn a corner both on and off the pitch.

Emery must instantly drop Aston Villa ace after 6/10 UCL display

Aston Villa’s first Champions League game since 1982/83 saw them put in a very dominant performance away to Swiss champions Young Boys. The Villans earned a commanding 3-0 victory in Switzerland, thanks to goals from Youri Tielemans, Jacob Ramsey and Amadou Onana.

Statistically, the Villans dominated the game, too. According to Sofascore, they had far more possession compared to the Swiss outfit after weathering an early storm and adapting to the plastic pitch, a tough surface to play on.

In total, Unai Emery’s side had 53% of the ball, compared to Young Boys’ 47%. Not only that, they had 20 shots to the Swiss champions’ 12 and registered seven on target, two more than their opponent.

Stats from Sofascore

It was unsurprisingly a dominant performance from the former European Cup winners, as they slotted seamlessly back into the biggest club competition in the continent.

The visitors can certainly be happy with their night’s work, although there was still a lot to do for goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez, who put in an impressive showing against the Swiss outfit.

Emi Martinez’s stats vs Young Boys

Despite a good night’s work from his teammates, notably the three goalscorers, Martinez was tested fairly regularly and had to put in some crucial saves, particularly in the first half, in order to keep the score at 0-0. There were certainly some hairy moments for the Villans.

The Argentine World Cup winner had 54 touches of the ball and was forced into making five saves. Three of those stops came from shots inside the penalty box. The goalkeeper also completed 28 from 41 attempted passes.

It was a performance that earned Martinez a deserved 8/10 ranking from Goal journalist Richard Mills. The journalist was complimentary of his performance, explaining that the Villa number 23 was on hand to get “his team out of a couple of dangerous situations”.

The surface did not make it an easy pitch to play on for any goalkeeper, but Martinez made light worm of it. He negated a ball that could skid on unpredictably and ultimately managed to keep a clean sheet in Switzerland.

Whilst the former Arsenal goalkeeper had a good night, the same cannot be said for one Villa player, Lamar Bogarde, who had a tough evening and was substituted at half-time.

Lamar Bogarde’s stats vs Young Boys

After making two consecutive Premier League starts at right-back in the absence of the injured Matty Cash, it was a baptism of fire for 20-year-old Bogarde on Tuesday evening.

Whilst he did not make any calamitous mistakes, the youngster struggled to make an impact on the game and was subsequently replaced at the break by the more experienced Diego Carlos.

He had just 18 touches of the ball, 39 fewer than Martinez, completed eight from nine passes, and lost the ball three times. Boagrde also won just 50% of his ground duels in Switzerland, three from six in total.

His performance earned him a 6/10 rating from the aforementioned Mills, who noted that, whilst the youngster didn’t necessarily do anything wrong, “a couple of threatening Young Boys attacks happened on his side of the pitch”, suggesting they exploited his side.

Indeed, if Emery was to drop the youngster this weekend for the game against Wolves at Villa Park, there are two options as to who could replace him. The most obvious option is Carlos, who came on to replace him on Tuesday, but he could also turn to 18-year-old Serbian defender Kosta Nedeljkovic, who featured in their first three Premier League games of the season and stood out against Arsenal.

Diego Carlos for Aston Villa

It remains to be seen which route the Spaniard chooses to go down, including showing faith in Bogarde and keeping him in the side. However, he will certainly be hoping his side can continue to build on an impressive win in their first Champions League game since 1982/83.

Lopetegui could already have his own Jhon Duran in West Ham machine

West Ham United need to hit the ground running after the second international pause of the season. Julen Lopetegui claimed his biggest victory at the helm so far just over a week ago, putting four past newly-promoted Ipswich Town in the Premier League.

After spending over £120m on first-team talent this summer in the wake of David Moyes’ timely departure, it’s fair that some expected more over the opening few months, even if some of the criticism has been inordinate.

There’s been something to be desired from an attacking standpoint, to be sure. It hasn’t quite clicked, and you’ve got to wonder if Lopetegui and Irons technical director Tim Steidten are rueing the failure to sign Jhon Duran from Aston Villa.

West Ham missed a trick with Jhon Duran

Duran has been tearing the Premier League to shreds this season, having scored four goals already in the flight despite having yet to be handed a starting berth.

The mercurial Colombian, aged 20, was at the centre of West Ham proposals this summer and even sparked contention within the Villa fanbase after making the Hammers gesture on a live stream, but an agreement could not be found and he still plies his trade within Unai Emery’s system.

This looks to be quite the blunder from Tim Steidten and co, for Duran is displaying the aptitude of a first-class striker and could have made a real difference at the London Stadium – scoring on the opening day against Lopetegui’s side, condemning them to defeat.

It’s frustrating that the Irons didn’t pay their divisional rivals what they wanted, but Lopetegui might find that he has his very own version of the super-sub in Niclas Fullkrug, who has yet to show what he’s made of in West Ham colours.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

West Ham's own Jhon Duran

Fullkrug joined West Ham from Borussia Dortmund this summer in a deal worth £27m. The heavyset striker impressed in Germany last season, scoring 16 goals and adding ten assists across all competitions.

Niclas Fullkrug for West Ham

The 31-year-old’s start to life at the club has been disrupted by injury, but his escapades with Germany at Euro 2024 and dynamic twist to the traditional striker’s role suggest that he could indeed be West Ham’s own version of Duran.

The 6 foot 2 talent has an impressive record of 14 goals from just 22 caps for his country. What’s more remarkable is that he’s only started seven games for his nation, further emphasising his suitability for the super-sub role at West Ham.

Pundit Ally McCoist was particularly impressed with the centre-forward this bygone summer, saying: “Every time I’ve seen Fullkrug, he’s impressed me. His game knowledge is good, his touch is excellent, he can finish, he’s aggressive … I think he’s a good player.”

Fullkrug’s ability to pop up with goals at the right moments, showcasing positional awareness and ferocious ball-striking power, suggests that he could play the Duran-esque role that’s working a treat for the Villans right now, especially when considering the creative support around him from the likes of Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus and Lucas Paqueta.

As West Ham’s fluency knits together, the return of the German machine could bear dividends, adding the perfect dimension to the frontline.

Reports in the last week have shared that Arsenal are interested in Nico Paz of Como, with the former Real Madrid starlet turning heads after sealing a move to Serie A over the summer.

Meanwhile, it is also believed that the north Londoners would bring in a new striker as soon as January if the right opportunity arises. Arsenal have their eye on Eintracht Frankfurt star Omar Marmoush, and well-connected former chief scout Mick Brown has “heard” that they could look to bring in a number nine mid-season, despite the stellar form of Kai Havertz.

You have to credit Mikel Arteta because he’s brought this out of him,” said Brown to Football Insider.

I’ve heard, though, that if there was the right option out there, Arsenal still want to buy somebody in that position. The problem is there’s not a long list of players who are good enough to play that role and are also available to come to the Premier League. Arsenal won’t want to waste any money they have on a player they don’t need.

They’ll be prudent, but I know they’ll be looking for areas they can improve, and I think that will be one even with Havertz playing as well as he has been.”

After missing out on a deal for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, with Arsenal having an offer rejected for the Slovenian alongside Chelsea and Man United (Fabrizio Romano), there are widespread rumours that Edu could go back in for the 21-year-old.

Benjamin Sesko's agents hold talks with Arsenal at the Emirates

According to TEAMtalk this week, the striker’s agents have been to N5 in recent moonths for discussions with club officials.

Indeed, Arteta’s side have apparently promised Sesko’s people that he would be guaranteed game time if he signed for the club. This has given Arsenal an advantage over fellow interested sides like Man United and Bayern Munich, with Sesko enticed by the possibility of playing for Arteta.

The report also claims that Sesko’s representatives have held talks with Arsenal officials at the Emirates in recent months, so it appears there is a very real possibility of the £63 million star making a move there in 2025.

Another intriguing aspect of this is that Sesko has a “gentleman’s agreement” that he can leave Leipzig, either next summer or in 2026, so the Bundesliga side may not even stand in his way if he pushes to sign for Arsenal.

He no longer opens their batting, and before this game had scored 4, 6, 0, 0 and 0* in his only outings with the bat this season.Narine repaid that faith with an influential all-round display that led the Knight Riders to their third win in four games in the UAE leg of IPL 2021.On a tricky, two-paced pitch in Sharjah, Delhi Capitals only managed 127 after being sent in, with Narine looking un-hittable while finishing with 2 for 18 in his four overs. The chase was a stop-start affair, and there were moments when it seemed like the game could go either way, not least when Narine walked in with the Knight Riders needing 32 off 32 with five wickets in hand.Chancing his arm and riding his luck, Narine clattered 21 off 10 balls, quickly reinforcing the smallness of the target. The game wasn’t quite done yet, as Narine and then Tim Southee fell with the Knight Riders at the doorstep of victory, necessitating an injured Lockie Ferguson to come out to bat. But Narine’s hitting ensured the anxiety was kept to a minimum: Nitish Rana’s winning slash to the third man boundary came with 10 balls still left to play.Dhawan and only
Four overs into the match, it wasn’t yet fully apparent how this pitch would play. Knight Riders went all-pace in the powerplay, and Shikhar Dhawan used the pace on offer from Sandeep Warrier and Tim Southee to pick up five fours in 16 balls. An umpire’s call verdict saved Dhawan when a Southee skidder sneaked under his attempted pull in the fourth over, and in the next over he slapped Ferguson straight to cover point to fall for 24 off 20. By then, Knight Riders had worked out that slower balls and cross-seam balls bowled into the pitch was the way to go for the seamers. Capitals 35 for 1 in five overs.Watch the IPL on ESPN+

The Chakravarthy-Narine strangle
From the 6th over to the 11th, it was all about Knight Riders’ mystery spinners, both of whom bowl quick and into the pitch, hitting the shorter side of a good length and denying batters easy hits down the ground. It was the ideal style of spin bowling for this pitch, and the Capitals batters struggled to take the initiative against Varun Chakravarthy and Narine.Only 17 came off the first four overs of spin, with Narine picking up his first wicket with a brilliant bit of deception, switching to a middle-finger-and-ring-finger grip while loading up behind his back, and sneaking an offbreak between bat and pad as Shreyas Iyer looked to push into the off side with an open face.Steven Smith – who had come in for the injured Prithvi Shaw – picked up a pair of deft fours off the first ball of Chakravarthy’s third over, the tenth of Capitals’ innings, and then swept Narine to beat a diving deep backward square leg in the next over, to move to 35 off 27.These were vital hits, with Rishabh Pant struggling for timing at the other end, but just when it seemed like Smith had gained a measure of the conditions, he played on to Ferguson while attempting a pull off a hard-length ball that kept a touch low. With that, Capitals were 77 for 3 in 12.2 overs.Capitals fizzle out
The wicket of Smith came in Ferguson’s second over. It also turned out to be his last, with a hamstring injury forcing him off the field. The selection of Southee for Russell came in handy at this juncture, as did the versatility of Venkatesh Iyer, who sent down four overs of medium-pace, denying both left- and right-handers room while mostly hitting an exaggeratedly full length that denied them elevation as well.He also picked up two key wickets, getting Shimron Hetmyer to hole out to long-off, defeated by the slowness of the pitch, and Axar Patel to chip a catch to midwicket. In between, Narine took his second wicket, trapping Lalit Yadav lbw for a duck. With Pant unable to find the boundary with any real frequency at his end, the Capitals innings ground to a halt, their last nine overs bringing them just 54 runs for the loss of nine wickets. And for the second time this season, they got through an entire innings without hitting a six. They had lost that game as well, against Rajasthan Royals in Mumbai.Gill provides the early momentum
Venkatesh followed up his impressive bowling spell with two fours in the first over of the chase, off Anrich Nortje, before falling to Lalit Yadav’s offspin in the fifth over. His opening partner Shubman Gill also delivered crucial early hits, stepping out in the second over to hit Axar Patel back over his head for the first six of the match, and then clearing long-on when he went after R Ashwin in the seventh over.Nitish Rana punches the air after hitting the winning runs•BCCI

By this time the Knight Riders had also lost Rahul Tripathi, but they were keeping themselves ahead of the required rate. When Rana, who came in at No. 4, swept Ashwin to the backward square leg boundary at the end of the ninth over, Knight Riders needed 66 from 66.Rabada and Ashwin make things interesting
Capitals held Kagiso Rabada back until the 11th over, and he began with five straight dots to Gill, a mixture of hard-length balls and yorkers. Then, seeing Gill step out, Rabada shortened his length and bowled a slower offcutter into the pitch. Too early into his flat-bat slog, Gill picked out the fielder at long-on.When Ashwin followed up that wicket-maiden by getting Eoin Morgan caught at slip, Knight Riders were just beginning to wobble, needing 61 from 52 with six wickets in hand. The importance of going hard
Sometimes, you can overcomplicate T20. Sometimes, one team enjoys a run of luck that sees them through. Dinesh Karthik looked extremely uncertain in a 14-ball innings that ended with a chop-on off Avesh Khan, but by then he’d slashed hard twice at Rabada and Lalit and picked up a pair of edged fours.Rana, meanwhile, had stepped out to Lalit, found himself a long way from the pitch of the ball, and gone through with his shot anyway, and ended up clearing the straight boundary by a distance. Then he’d got one closer to his slot, and slog-swept that cleanly for another six.So by the time Karthik departed, Knight Riders were still in control of the required rate.Narine’s arrival only brought them more luck. Rabada went with the age-old plan of going short at his body, only for a top-edged hook to carry all the way for six. Then he sent down two short balls that didn’t have the same venom in them, and Narine clubbed them for four and six. Twenty-one came off that Rabada over, and Knight Riders now only needed 9 off 24.
