Dier, who joined Bayern Munich on an initial loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur in January 2024, made his transfer permanent last summer when he signed a one-year deal. In the last 11 months, the English defender has become extremely popular in the Bayern dressing room and has won the trust of new manager Vincent Kompany. However, according to , the Bundesliga giants are all set to let Dier leave next summer as they do not intend to extend his contract, though no final decision has been made as yet.

The report also adds that the Bavarian club have their priorities set as they are looking to extend Upamecano's contract. The Frenchman's current contract expires in June 2026, however, Kompany wants Upamecano to stay at the club on a long-term basis as the Belgian coach is known to be an admirer of the central defender. The club are set to initiate contract talks with him in the coming weeks.

Dier has appeared in six games across all competitions in the 2024-25 campaign, clocking 143 minutes on the pitch. He has featured in Kompany's starting lineup only once this season which came in the club's 4-0 win over Mainz last month in the DFB Pokal.

Bayern Munich, who are still unbeaten in the Bundesliga this season, will next be seen in action after the international break on November 22 when they take on Augsburg.

West Ham targeting "supernatural" £34m Paqueta replacement

It's not really surprising, but it hits with the force of a raging bull all the same. West Ham United's Lucas Paqueta is locked in negotiations with Brasileiro Serie A side Flamengo, heading back to his homeland.

One year ago, the all-action playmaker seemed destined for a move to Premier League juggernauts Manchester City, but for his £85m transfer to be foiled by FA charges for betting breaches.

West Ham's Lucas Paqueta in action

Now, UEFA are closing in on a lengthy suspension and the Brazil international is returning home to avoid a ruinous sanction – or at least, avoid an interminable spell on the sidelines.

West Ham need to sign a centre-forward and have already purchased teenage winger Luis Guilherme for £25.5m, but Paqueta's sale would leave a hole, no doubt. A replacement would be required.

West Ham transfer news

According to reports via Knees Up Mother Brown earlier this week, West Ham are locked in negotiations with Juventus for the transfer of Matias Soule, with the Serie A side willing to sell to mitigate their financial worries.

Aston Villa have been known admirers of the Argentine talent but have eased their interest after signing Enzo Barrenechea and Samuel Iling-Junior from the Old Lady.

Soule is worth €40m (£34m) to Juventus, but with Paqueta fleeing the English capital, the Hammers need to launch an effort to sign a worthy replacement.

What Matias Soule would bring to West Ham

Soule, aged 21, has just completed a successful loan move in the Italian top flight with Frosinone, scoring 11 goals and supplying three assists across 36 matches.

While he offers positional value both centrally and on the attacking right flank, there are some interesting similarities between the young buck, who has been hailed for his "supernatural dribbling" by journalist Antonio Mango, he's also an elite distributor, and this could lead him to successfully replacing Paqueta's talismanic prowess as the central star.

Indeed, as per FBref, Soule ranks among the top 10% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions and successful take-ons and the top 14% for progressive passes per 90.

Paqueta? The 26-year-old ranks among the top 10% for passes attempted, the top 8% for progressive passes and the top 4% for tackles per 90.

Soule has the tools to slot into Paqueta's place in Julen Lopetegui's side, especially given the Serie A starlet has been described as "an elite coach's dream" by analyst Ben Mattinson for his tactical fluidity and sharp match intelligence.

West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paqueta.

He could be the perfect addition to an Irons side in transition, and Lopetegui must ensure that he is brought to east London, especially if Paqueta ends his spell at the club rather bitterly.

Nottingham Forest racing to sign teenage talent with 22 G/A at youth level

Nottingham Forest are racing several of Europe's elite clubs to land a promising teenage talent who impressed last season, it has been reported.

Nottingham Forest looking to youth

Since their arrival in the Premier League two years ago, survival has been the main objective for Nuno Espírito Santo's side, something that they achieved on the final day of the 2023/24 campaign at the expense of Luton Town.

But quietly, the club have been overhauling an ageing squad and handing their side a more youthful look. The likes of Anthony Elanga (22), Callum Hudson Odoi (23), Murillo (23), Morgan Gibbs-White (24), Nico Williams (23) and Danilo (23) have all been added in recent summers and form a key part of the first team at the City Ground.

They have continued in that vein this summer, adding 21-year-old Elliot Anderson from Newcastle United in a deal worth £35m as the Magpies battled financial fair play pressures.

They have also added young winger Eric da Silva Moreira (18) from St Pauli, and there is a clear shift from aiming at Premier League survival to looking to build a more sustainable and youthful side, and they are expected to make more signings in the coming weeks. Now, they look set to try and continue that as they battle several clubs around Europe for a German youth talent.

Forest at centre of transfer tussle

That comes as Sport Witness relay claims from German outlet Bild that Forest are among the clubs in the hunt to sign Union Berlin youngster Levis Asanji this summer. Yet to make a senior appearance for Union, Asanji enjoyed a fine season at youth level in 2023/24, grabbing 11 goals and 11 assists in just 26 outings, while also grabbing a goal in the UEFA youth league too.

That has caught the eye of several clubs, and the report reveals that European giants Juventus are among those eyeing up a move for the 18 year-old forward, while fellow Serie A side Lecce are also credited with an interest alongside Forest.

The German outfit wish to keep him, and have extended his deal until 2025 in a bid to do so, but do not have an U23 side so it is hard to work out where he would play should he remain in Berlin.

As a result, his exit seems likely, the report claims, with Juventus thought to be leading the way having held preliminary discussions over a potential deal.

Forest, of course, have experience dealing with Union after they signed Taiwo Awoniyi from the German side back in 2022, and could look to repeat that trick to poach the teen prodigy and bring him to the City Ground, where he would likely be tasked with playing youth football for at least the first part of his time in the Midlands.

It was announced earlier this week that Guardiola is set to remain at the club and sign a new one-year contract, with the option of a further year. And now, the club are poised to offer Haaland a huge new deal as they bid to tie him down too, despite the prospect of relegation from the top-flight if found guilty of 115 alleged financial breaches.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Haaland is contracted until 2027 and currently earns £375,000-per-week before bonuses. His weekly wage means he earns £20m ($25m) per season and a four-year extension would see him earn over £100m before bonuses are factored in.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

City are also likely to open talks with Ballon d'Or winner Rodri over a new deal, although they face a decision over Kevin De Bruyne, as his deal expires this summer. If he were to stay, he would likely need to accept a pay cut, but negotiations may be informed by the fact he can speak with foreign clubs from January onwards.

More at play than the pitch in final Test showdown

India must avoid defeat to reach the WTC final as England seek 2-2 series draw

Valkerie Baynes03-Mar-202112:14

‘I don’t believe in fair and unfair pitches’ – Manjrekar

Big pictureIt would be tempting to place the Ahmedabad pitch and the ball on centre stage, given that both stole the critics’ attention after the two-nights-only performance that was the third Test. But then, that would be akin to allowing some wonky scenery to distract from the actors and there’s so much more at play here. Crucially for India, they cannot afford to lose the grand finale at the same venue if they are to reach the World Test Championship final against New Zealand in June. But they also need only a draw to get there.England, whose heavy defeat inside two days last week denied them any prospect of making it to the big dance, have shifted the narrative towards what drawing the series 2-2 would mean. Given that India have not lost two Tests in a home series since 2012 and the margins of their two most recent victories – 317 runs in the second Test and 10 wickets in the third – it would be quite something for England to turn things back around.Related

Ben Foakes admits England expect more of the same from Ahmedabad pitch

How do you bat on pitches like Ahmedabad? Take risks, choose your shots, use your feet

Dom Bess will be 'more than ready to go' if selected for fourth Test – Jack Leach

Fourth-Test victory would be a 'phenomenal' achievement – Joe Root

To do so, however, they need an underperforming batting order to lift. While this match, starting on Thursday, will be played during the day with a return to the red ball, both sides expect more of the same from the sharp-turning surface at Narendra Modi Stadium. The fact that Joe Root scored more runs in the first innings of the series than his entire team did in the next five puts their plight in sharp focus and when he joined the majority in struggling with the bat in the most recent match, they needed someone else to step up. Zak Crawley did that to some extent, asserting himself early for his half-century. Given that regular opener Rory Burns made way for Crawley’s return from injury and that an unlikely swap back is the only realistic change of batsmen available, they need improvement from within the existing lineup.By their own admission, England fluffed their lines on selection for the third Test, thinking the pink ball under lights would offer more to their seamers and going with only one specialist spinner in Jack Leach as Root picked up a five-wicket haul with his part-time offspin. That puts Dom Bess in the frame for a recall, having been left out of the previous two matches, where India’s spinners dominated. Axar Patel now has 18 wickets at 9.44 from two career Tests – the two that England have lost during this series – and R Ashwin has played all three for 24 wickets at 15.70. There has been some illness within the touring camp, although all have trained as normal and Root said they would continue to monitor the situation up until match-day morning.Joe Root and Virat Kohli are preparing for their final showdown of the series•BCCI

Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)England LLWWW
India WWLWDIn the spotlightDom Bess was dropped for the second and third Tests, having taken 17 wickets at 22.75 across both of England’s Tests in Sri Lanka and the first Test in Chennai – all of which England won. In that time he also averaged 22.75 with the bat and, if England’s third-Test innings of 112 and 81 are anything to go by, runs down the order would be welcome.Despite his creditable record on this tour, there was a feeling that Bess had at times bowled ugly. He sent down 19 full tosses in the opening Test in Chennai and, assessing his own first-day five-for in Galle, he said: “I didn’t feel like I bowled very well”. But given that he is young and learning in the toughest of conditions, there were legitimate questions over which would cause the greatest damage to his confidence, sticking with him or dropping him. Leaving him out was easy enough to explain when England had someone with the experience of Moeen Ali to replace him for the second India Test and plumped for a seam-heavy attack in the third. But with Moeen sent home to rest and spin very much in play here, he could well be called upon to regain England’s faith. It’s perhaps harsh to question Virat Kohli given that he has three half-centuries from his past six Test innings, including his second-innings 62 in response to his first-innings duck at Chennai. But such is the weight of expectation that the fact he has gone 11 innings since his last ton – against Bangladesh in late 2019 – that questions have indeed been asked. Scores of 11, 72, 0, 62 and 27 against England suggest he will be hungry to make an even bigger contribution, especially with the chance to propel his side to the WTC showcase. But while his satisfaction with the pitches in this series seems at odds with his returns, he is unconcerned. Having described the batting from both sides in the third Test as “not up to standard” he said on the eve of this match that he felt “no haste or desperation” personally, as long as his side is winning.Team newsWith Bess a likely inclusion, one of England’s seamers would make way, possibly Stuart Broad, who is wicketless from the two matches he has played. Having acquitted himself well with four wickets in the second Test in Chennai, Olly Stone could come in for Jofra Archer, who has taken four wickets from his two games, although Mark Wood is also waiting in the wings after resting for the first half of the series.England (possible): 1 Zak Crawley, 2 Dom Sibley, 3 Jonny Bairstow, 4 Joe Root (capt), 5 Ben Stokes, 6 Ollie Pope, 7 Ben Foakes (wk), 8 Dom Bess, 9 Jofra Archer/Olly Stone, 10 Jack Leach, 11 James AndersonWith Jasprit Bumrah out for personal reasons as India manage his workload, Umesh Yadav could come into the India line-up, fit again after injuring his calf in Australia and seeming to hold the edge over Mohammed Siraj. Otherwise, it is hard to see the hosts tinkering further with a successful side.India (possible): 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Virat Kohli (captain), 5 Ajinkya Rahane, 6 Rishabh Pant (wk), 7 Ravichandran Ashwin, 8 Washington Sundar, 9 Axar Patel, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Umesh YadavEngland players inspect the Ahmedabad pitch•ECB

Pitch and conditionsA similar surface to the last is widely anticipated for this Test and, from a result perspective, that ought to serve India reasonably well, even if Joe Root’s remarkable bowling figures are a reminder that they’ll also need to bat better to guard against mishaps. Temperatures forecast in the high 30s Celsius throughout makes for one certainty, it’ll be a scorcher.Stats and trivia India have not lost a series at home since 2012, vs England Should Root extract a victory from his men, he will pull clear of Michael Vaughan as England’s most successful Test captain with 27 wins India have not lost two Tests in a home series since 2012 Yadav is four wickets away from becoming only the fifth India fast bowler to pick up 100 wickets at homeQuotes”There’s always too much noise and too much conversation about spinning tracks.””As batters, if you don’t score runs, you’ll always look at yourselves and find ways to improve – we’ve certainly done that. We’ve looked at our dismissals and how we can build big partnerships and get some significant scores if it is a similar surface this time around.”

Imagine him & Ozoh: Derby could sign "unique" star who wants the move

Derby County fans only have one more day to wait until they're able to watch their beloved Rams play Championship football once more, with Paul Warne's men travelling to John Eustace's Blackburn Rovers for a Friday night affair at Ewood Park.

Warne will still be itching to get more bodies in through the door between now and the close of the month though, with a real position of worry for the Rams coming in between the sticks, as a move for lofty Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström continues to be delayed.

Derby County manager Paul Warne.

The ex-Rotherham United manager could well also want to improve the forwards he has at his disposal heading into the tougher league, with this tricky attacker on the agenda of the newly promoted outfit once more.

Derby determined to snap up former EFL ace

Last weekend journalist Alan Nixon, via his Patreon, reported that Derby are very much keen on a move for Brest winger Karamoko Dembele this summer, and could have an upper hand now in their pursuit of the enigmatic forward.

Dembele, according to Nixon, fancies a move to the second tier over a switch anywhere further down the EFL, which doesn't bode well for Birmingham City, who are known to be another interested party alongside the Rams.

Derby County target Karamoko Dembele in action for Blackpool.

What Dembele can offer alongside Ozoh

Starring out on loan in the third tier last season with Blackpool, before heading back to France, Warne and Co would love to be able to win his services, knowing how slippery he can be on the ball when bombing forward at opposition defenders.

Derby would reportedly be able to snap Dembele up on a permanent basis too, and based on his pre-season performances before the bread and butter of Championship football finally kicks into gear, the diminutive forward could star in his new location partnered alongside Crystal Palace loanee David Ozoh.

The promising 19-year-old central midfielder would pop up with a strike in Derby's final pre-season fixture against Real Valladolid, to help his new loan employers to a 2-1 victory, which could mean he has laid down a significant marker for a starting spot against the Riversiders tomorrow night.

At youth level for Oliver Glasner's Eagles, Ozoh has shone too, with four goals and three assists managed from a combined total of 68 games in and around the U18s and U21s.

Dembele will know very well the importance of having a formative loan spell away from your parent club, with his time at Blackpool last campaign in League One finally seeing him live up to the hype that came his way when he was a wide-eyed kid at Celtic, with eight goals and 13 assists tallied up from 39 league games.

Described as "unique" in the way he goes about playing his football by his ex-Tangerines manager Neil Critchley, with a constant focus on entertaining onlookers with dazzling displays, Dembele might well become a fan's favourite at Pride Park if he does sign on the dotted line, with Warne's style of football known to be more attritional at times than free-flowing.

Signings such as Dembele entering into the building could further help Derby in their quest to at least stay up next season in the Championship, as Warne aims to build an exciting squad that can take on the second tier and succeed, rather than sinking back down to the murky depths of League One.

Lindelof was forced off less than 30 minutes into Sweden's Nations League clash against Slovakia at the weekend. The 30-year-old was out with a toe injury earlier this season and not long after returning to fitness, the centre-back is back on the sidelines – something compatriot Emil Holm said Lindelof was gutted about.

The Bologna player told Swedish publication Göteborgs-Posten: "It’s very sad. He just come back from injury and then to get another injury, you suffer with that. It was tough to see. “He was very down in the dressing room too. He’s an important man in the team, he’s captain anyway. No, it was a shame. I gave him a hug and told him to get well.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Lindelof has made seven appearances for United this season and is a long way from being first-choice at United. Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs De Ligt, and Harry Maguire are ahead of him in the pecking order and when Leny Yoro returns from injury, that will limit Lindelof's game time even more. The Swede is out of contract at Old Trafford in 2025 and it seems he will be moving on next year.

Sri Lanka hope to appoint Tom Moody as director of cricket

Tom Moody has been lined up on what is understood to be a three-year contract to become Sri Lanka Cricket’s director of cricket, a newly-created role that will oversee almost every facet of the game in the country. The appointment will seek to utilise Moody’s experience working within cricketing structures in Australia, England and India to keep Sri Lankan cricket up-to-date with the latest technological advancements and best practices in the sport.”I think it will be important for him to come as an independent person with a different view, someone who has been involved in cricket in Australia and understands their structure, who has been involved in the IPL and those structures, a person who has been involved in county cricket with Worcestershire and understands their structure, and also being involved with the Caribbean Premier League,” Aravinda de Silva told ESPNcricinfo.De Silva heads up a sports ministry-appointed technical advisory committee overseeing the development of cricket in Sri Lanka – informally known as the cricket committee. Alongside him in the committee are former cricketers Roshan Mahanama, Muttiah Muralitharan and Kumar Sangakkara. Among their first moves has been the recommendation of Moody.Moody enjoyed a successful spell as head coach of the Sri Lankan national team from 2005-2007, most notably helping the side to the 2007 World Cup final, and de Silva believes this experience will provide him with the right tools for the job at hand.”We’re a committee and we need someone responsible and neutral working on certain areas with an open mind, who understands the culture, the players, the country’s culture, someone who’s been around. We need to blend and get the administrative side as well as the cricketing side.”He’s got a lot of experience and understands more things about what some of the other countries are doing right, and we need to get the best things out of those countries that will suit our culture and then implement those.”If all goes as planned, Moody, who is director of cricket at Sunrisers Hyderabad, will take up the position as soon as the hire is ratified by the SLC Executive Committee. Moody’s contract will allow him to split time between both roles, while SLC is expected to come out with a final decision on the appointment sometime over the next week. The position itself is an overarching one, the specifics of which are yet to be ironed out. What is clear is that Moody will have the mandate to address any areas that he feels is in need of attention, in consultation with the cricket committee, national team coach Mickey Arthur, head of coaching at SLC Jerome Jayaratne, and any other appointments that are made going forward.”He’ll come in and work with the existing lot, and we will then see if we need anymore people in specialised areas, depending on the gaps we need to fill. The reporting lines will be finalised once we understand the existing structure. All the areas will come under the Director of Cricket – one coordinating person,” de Silva said.”A lot of areas [will be covered]. On the medical side, reporting on fitness, who will be monitoring those things and driving it all the way down to grassroots. We have to put all those structures in place, that’s why it’s for three years. These things cannot be done overnight, it’s a long-term plan which we need to implement.”There has been renewed enthusiasm for revamping Sri Lanka Cricket of late, much of it spurred on by the appointment of the Sri Lankan President’s nephew, Namal Rajapaksa, as the country’s sports minister. Rajapaksa, an athlete in his own right having captained the Sri Lankan national rugby team, has moved swiftly since his appointment. He set up the National Sports Council headed by former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene in August. Earlier this month, he signed off on the cricket committee headed by de Silva. The decision to bring in a director of cricket is understood to have been agreed upon “unanimously”.While optimism surrounding a genuine reworking of Sri Lanka’s cricketing structure is being tempered by previous false dawns, the potential appointment of a director of cricket alongside a recent legal petition seeking to overhaul Sri Lanka Cricket’s much-maligned constitution – long cited as the cause of Sri Lanka’s ailing domestic structure – shows that hope among Sri Lanka’s cricketing fraternity is nevertheless growing.
