Fabrizio Romano: Birmingham now "leading" race to secure £300,000+ transfer

Birmingham City are thought to be one of the clubs leading the race to sign a £300,000+ player, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Birmingham appoint Chris Davies as new manager

The Blues finally appointed a new manager to replace Tony Mowbray earlier this month, with Chris Davies leaving his role as Tottenham Hotspur assistant to take the St Andrews vacancy. Talking to the media after joining, Davies has said:

"I've been ready to be a manager for quite a few years. I always felt like a manager, like a number one. I've had a lot of responsibility at big clubs with the managers I've worked with. Now I'm the decision maker and the buck stops with me but I prefer that.

"It was about the right club, the right fit and the right time. I already had a great job at a great club, but my gut feeling was that this was a club which reflected my own ambition. I was over in the Maldives with the family when this all happened, but these types of opportunities are important to capture."

Birmingham City will look to make a whole host of new signings to attempt an immediate return to the Championship.

ByKelan Sarson Jun 11, 2024

A newly relegated Birmingham, backed by Tom Wagner and Tom Brady's Knighthead Group, will be looking to win promotion out of League One at the first time of asking. To do that, new signings could be targeted ahead of Davies’ first campaign as a senior manager, and by the looks of it, the club are looking to make their mark in the transfer window.

Birmingham “leading” Marc Leonard transfer race

According to Romano, Birmingham are one of three clubs “leading” the race to sign Brighton & Hove Albion’s Marc Leonard. The Blues are joined by Championship side Oxford United and new League One rivals Wrexham for Leonard, who is likely to cost in excess of £300,000 when add-ons are factored in.

The 22-year-old made the move to Brighton from Hearts as a teenager back in 2018, initially turning out in their U18 team before progressing to the U23s and has gone on to turn out twice for the Seagulls’ first team.

Leonard has also had two separate loan spells with Northampton Town, making 97 senior appearances for the club in total, scoring six times and registering seven assists. He won Northampton’s Player of the Season for the 2023/24 campaign, collecting 80% of the vote, while also picking up the Players' Player of the Season award.

His long-term future could now be away from Brighton following an impressive loan spell with Northampton, and by the looks of it, Birmingham are pushing to bring him to the Midlands and potentially make him a key part of their plans under Davies.

Ryan ten Doeschate digs in to seal another Essex title in Bob Willis Trophy final

Somerset fell short again as Essex batted out 80.3 over to claim the trophy on first-innings lead

George Dobell27-Sep-2020

Essex 337 for 8 (Cook 172, Westley 51, Gregory 6-72) and 179 for 6 (ten Doeschate 46, Leach 3-38) drew with Somerset 301 (Byrom 117, Overton 66, Cook 5-76) and 272 for 7 (Lammonby 116, Porter 4-73) – Essex won the title on first-innings leadEssex survived a nervous final afternoon at Lord’s to secure the inaugural and perhaps only Bob Willis Trophy. While the match ended as a draw, the playing regulations stated that, in such circumstances, the winner would be the side with the higher first innings total. The result mean Essex have won the domestic first-class competition three times in the last four years. Their status as the best red-ball county side in the land is undisputed. But they had to cling on against a determined Somerset on the final day. On a deteriorating pitch which offered assistance to seamers and spinners alike, Essex slipped to 131 for 5 with a minimum of 27.1 overs remaining before Ryan ten Doeschate and Adam Wheater came together to deny Somerset. It means Somerset have finished second in the domestic first-class competition in each of the last three years and four times in the last five. In all, they have been runners-up seven times this century and remain one of only three first-class counties not to have won in the modern era. It may console them a little to know that this competition is not considered on a par with winning the Championship and that, even had they won here, it would not have broken their duck. But it will only be a little. The novelty of finishing second has worn pretty thin for Somerset. It remains to be seen whether the Bob Willis Trophy will ever be contested again. While there are those keen to see it installed as a showpiece event at the end of each season, others are worried whether that will serve to dilute the sense of achievement in winning the County Championship. Is it fair, they ask, to ask a side which has proved itself the best over the course of a season to risk it all on an autumnal encounter where the toss or the conditions might disproportionately define the result? One solution would be to award the Championship title to the side which finishes top at the end of the league stages and then contest this match as a standalone event between the top two sides. But even that would threaten to dilute the value of the Championship victory.Ryan ten Doeschate lunges out to block another delivery•Getty Images

Whether this match worked as a showpiece event is debatable. There were moments, not least when Alastair Cook or Tom Lammonby were batting, when it really did feel like a celebration of county cricket. In the face of the unique challenges posed by this season, it has been an excellent solution. It was probably fitting these two sides qualified, too. Both are stuffed with the products of their own academies – nine players in each team could be considered homegrown – with numerous others having moved on (the likes of Ben Foakes, Dom Bess, Ravi Bopara, Jos Buttler and Jamie Overton) to ply their trade elsewhere. They have consistently pushed for silverware in recent years, supplying players for England in the process. They are, in short, two clubs doing a huge amount right and providing an example to others of what can be achieved on modest budgets. But the challenges posed by the horribly cold weather, the empty stands – something which may prove an issue at any time in a neutral venue – and the need to separate the sides in a drawn match were substantial. And while it just about worked as a one-off event, it didn’t really leave you wanting more, either. As Tom Abell, the Somerset captain put it: “The County Championship is the best first-class competition in the world.” It probably requires nurturing more than tinkering.Earlier Craig Overton had helped Somerset thrash another 45 runs in 8.1 overs before the declaration came. The target – 237 in a minimum of 80 overs – probably looked generous. And, for a while on the final day, with Cook batting serenely, it appeared Essex may coast there. But his dismissal saw them abandon plans of completing an outright win and settle instead for survival over the last 40 overs of the match.Cook looked most underwhelmed by the decision from Russell Warren, the umpire, to adjudge him out caught behind. Replays were inconclusive – it is possible the sound as ball passed bat was caused by the bat clipping the pad – but it is hard to recall another dismissal in Cook’s career when he has stood so long and made his displeasure more obvious.Either way, the wicket appeared to jolt Essex. By then, they had already lost Nick Browne, edging a delivery from Lewis Gregory, who finished with eight in the match, that demanded a stroke and bounced a little, and Tom Westley, who had been trapped in front by the persevering Overton. Jack Leach, without a first-class wicket since last November, when he dismissed Tim Southee in Mount Maunganui, gained lavish turn and bounce from his first delivery and broke his drought with the wicket of Dan Lawrence, who was defeated by what appeared to be an arm ball. But Paul Walter was stubborn and ten Doeschate was solid. And while the former was eventually removed by Leach, courtesy of one that turned from round the wicket, Wheater joined ten Doeschate in a sixth-wicket stand that contributed only 48 runs but denied Somerset for 27 overs. By the time ten Doeschate fell, top-edging a sweep, there were only moments remaining. The draw and the trophy were secured. “I couldn’t have asked for anyone better to be out there in that situation,” Westley, the Essex captain in his first year in the role, said afterwards.Jack Leach struck to remove Dan Lawrence•Getty Images

“I’m incredibly proud of all the boys and management,” Westley added. “This [tournament] may never happen again, so to win it is amazing. We may be the only club to ever win the Bob Willis Trophy. It’s a continuation of success we’ve had in red-ball cricket over the last few years. It’s right up there with winning the County Championship last year.”Abell was more subdued. “Disappointment is the overwhelming emotion,” he said. “We were second to Essex last year and we were desperate not to be again. Coming so close a number of times, we feel it is within touching distance. This adds fuel to the fire. But the fire is already burning pretty deep within everyone.”Westley was quick to praise the club’s culture, academy and willingness to “give our own a go”, but it was noticeable that he also picked out the imports for their influence. Simon Harmer was described as a “match-winner”, coach Anthony McGrath was praised for him ability to “galvanise this side like I’ve never seen at Essex in previous years” and ten Doeschate, the previous captain, credited for instilling belief and transforming the club from “a fairly mediocre Division Two team” to one which believed it could be the best in the country. The message? Providing opportunities for homegrown players is crucial, but let’s not forget the positive influence of Kolpaks, overseas and the like. There’s a bigger picture here. To have completed this competition in these circumstances, to have provided opportunities for young players, to have kept the game relevant and to have provided some online entertainment for spectators at a time when it was sorely needed, has been something of a triumph. And a triumph that not all other sports have managed to achieve. The game still faces some substantial challenges – many of the players on show here may well be on furlough again by the end of the week – but this competition has provided a reminder of the better times that lie ahead. Maybe we’ll come to look back on it as county cricket’s Dunkirk moment.

'No set template, be proactive and smart' – Jasprit Bumrah's guide to pressure-overs bowling

When the pressure is really on, Jasprit Bumrah is the first one the Mumbai Indians tend to turn to

Vishal Dikshit27-Oct-2020Here’s a short and straightforward guide on bowling in the death (and Super) overs from one of the best in the business, Jasprit Bumrah: Break the situation down into what your team wants from you in that over, assess the pitch and conditions, evaluate the match situation, check the boundary distance on all sides, especially square, and then choose the deliveries from the options available. To Bumrah, one of the best death bowlers in the world, another key to successful bowling under pressure is to not go into every such situation with a set template, but always be “very proactive and smart”.”It is difficult to just categorise [death bowling and Super-Over bowling] at one go, but it is different,” he said during a media interaction on Tuesday. “It depends on different people how they treat it, but for me, I just try to keep things simple, try to assess the wicket, situation, the boundary sizes and all of that and I then choose my options.”It’s very difficult to just say, ‘oh you should just bowl yorkers, you should just bowl slower ones’. You have to be very proactive [and] smart with what approach you want to have and what the wicket is helping as well. So all of these things I keep in mind and try to do what I can.”

I try to do things that are in my control. I try to stay in the present, I try to take it one ball at a time. Whenever pressure creeps in I ask myself ‘what does the team require me to do at that moment’ and then segregate the whole situation. I focus ball by ball, what I’ve to execute on this ball. So [I] try to segregate the things, try to be in the present. That helps me a lot.

Bumrah has been the Mumbai Indians’ go-to bowler for the crunch overs this season too, especially in Lasith Malinga’s absence, and is the joint third-highest wicket-taker with a tally of 17 strikes. Already, in 11 matches, the Mumbai Indians have had three Super Overs – one against the Royal Challengers Bangalore and two versus the Kings XI Punjab in one game – out of which Bumrah bowled his limit of two.Mumbai’s new-look pace attack this time includes Trent Boult (16 wickets), James Pattinson (11 from eight games) and Nathan Coulter-Nile (two from three games), and the way all those quicks have stepped up and bowled together in tandem has changed the way Bumrah has been used, while retaining his specialist role at the death. The Mumbai Indians have used Boult’s undeniable skill with the new ball and Pattinson’s hit-the-deck-hard approach to open the bowling in almost all matches, except when Bumrah shared the new ball on two out of 11 occasions, against the Rajasthan Royals and the Chennai Super Kings. Otherwise, Bumrah has had a slightly different and well-defined role this IPL compared to the past: bowl just one in the powerplay, one just after the halfway mark, and two at the death – either the 16th and 18th, or 17th and 19th, depending on opposition and match situation.Trent Boult is pumped after taking a wicket•BCCI”It’s always difficult when you bowl in a pressure situation,” Bumrah said of bowling in the death when defending totals. “During that time, bowlers can come under pressure and complicate things and think about a lot of things that they shouldn’t.”I try to do things that are in my control. That’s probably the goal in any situation.”Bumrah also said that he didn’t go in with a pre-meditated thinking of having to bowl each ball differently in an over to keep the batsmen guessing. “It depends on what stage you’re bowling in the match. Sometimes you might be looking to close off the over, sometimes you take a gamble or try an attacking approach. It’s not that you have a same template or you will repeat those balls or you’ll change up with each and every delivery. It depends on the whole situation, what stage are you there on the match, what’s the wicket offering, the dimensions of the ground. So all of this you keep in mind and then decide what kind of delivery you want.”No matter how many change-ups he talks about or whatever different bowling combinations the Mumbai Indians use, the one constant for them is that when they need a bowler in a high-pressure situation, they don’t need to think and just toss the ball to Bumrah.

Kapil Dev 'doing fine' after surgery, discharged from hospital

Kapil Dev, India’s first World Cup-winning captain, was discharged from a city hospital on Sunday, two days after undergoing angioplasty following complaints of chest pain and uneasiness. The Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, where he had been admitted, said in a statement, “He’s doing fine and can resume his regular daily activity soon. He’ll be under regular follow-up consultation with Dr Atul Mathur.”Dr Mathur, director of the cardiology department at the hospital, conducted the procedure – an emergency coronary angioplasty, to open blocked arteries and restore normal blood flow to the heart – on Dev after he had been admitted and evaluated. Dev, who played 131 Tests and 225 ODIs from 1978 to 1994, is widely hailed as one of the finest allrounders to have played the game. With 5248 runs at 31.05 and 434 wickets at 29.64, he remains the only cricketer to have achieved the double of 5000 Test runs and 400 wickets, and one of only two, alongside Ian Botham, to have completed the 5000-300 double. An outswing bowler of great accuracy and skill, Dev broke Richard Hadlee’s record for most Test wickets (431) in 1994, and his mark of 434 stood until 2000, when Courtney Walsh went past it. Muttiah Muralitharan now holds the record for most Test wickets (800) while James Anderson – who currently has 600 – has the most Test wickets by a fast bowler.

Everton target Onana replacement who used to be "the best DM in the PL”

Despite their point deduction, Everton were able to avoid relegation with ease, finishing 15th in the Premier League and 14 points above the relegation zone.

A massive factor in this was Belgium international Amadou Onana, who made 30 Premier League appearances last campaign, scoring three goals and providing one assist.

His defensive prowess and athleticism allowed Sean Dyche and his side to keep eight clean sheets when Onana was in the team, which helped lead them towards safety.

Amadou Onana for Everton

Everton could sign Onana replacement

According to reports from Football Insider, Everton are preparing to make a move for Wilfred Ndidi of Leicester City when he becomes a free agent later this month.

The 27-year-olds contract expires on the 30th of June, and he has rejected a new contract with the Foxes, which will leave the door open for Everton to make a move for the Nigeria international.

Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi.

Ndidi could turn out to be an astute replacement for the highly rated Onana, who has many admirers in the Premier League looking for his signature.

How Ndidi compares to Onana

Once described as "the best defensive midfielder in the Premier League" by one ex-pro, the Nigerian spent last season in the Championship with Leicester, helping them towards the title and promotion back to the top flight.

Ndidi made 36 appearances in all competitions for the Foxes, scoring six goals, providing six assists and contributing to 14 clean sheets. But the position was slightly different for Ndidi under Leicester coach Enzo Maresca in his first season at the club.

Despite being a defensive midfielder (number six) for the majority of his career, Maresca deployed Harry Winks deeper in the midfield to orchestrate play for his side, meaning Ndidi actually took up more of a box to box number eight role.

Onana also has the ability and athleticism to play as a box-to-box midfielder, but both players have made a name for themselves with their defensive quality, and ability to cover ground.

Ndidi only produced 1.57 tackles per 90 last season for Leicester, however this was in the number eight role in the Championship. If you compare his numbers from his Premier League season in 2022/23 as a more defensive-minded midfielder, he completed 3.26 tackles per 90.

Compared to Onana, he completed 3.06 tackles per 90, playing a similar role for a similar-level club at the bottom half of the Premier League. The Belgian also won 2.24 aerials per 90, made 1.08 blocks per 90, and 0.9 interceptions per 90.

Again, comparing Ndidi's stats from the Championship season (2023/24) he underperformed Onana's metrics, winning 1.31 aerials per 90, making 0.85 blocks per 90, and 1.14 interceptions per 90 (so this stat actually beats Onana's respective number in this metric).

Amadou Onana for Everton.

However, when comparing Ndidi's Premier League season (2022/23) numbers, he won 1.34 aerials per 90, made 1.71 blocks per 90, and 2.03 interceptions per 90. These metrics show Ndidi's capacity to make defensive actions for his side in that holding role, matching or bettering many of Onana's numbers.

Both players have a similar build, and whilst Onana is much younger and has the capacity to improve even more technically on top of his already special physical profile, the Foxes midfielder does offer great value and could be an astute move to replace him.
