England mulling all-seam attack for Boxing Day Test – Silverwood

Head coach says stats suggest “seam is the way forward” at Centurion

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Dec-2019England are contemplating whether to field an all-seam attack for the second Test running, according to the head coach, Chris Silverwood. The tourists’ build-up for the Boxing Day Test at Centurion has been disrupted by illness in the camp, with frontline spinner Jack Leach one of the players affected, and Silverwood said the stats suggest “seam is the way forward” at SuperSport Park.In their previous outing, on last month’s tour of New Zealand, England picked four seamers and Ben Stokes at Hamilton, but only succeeded in taking 12 wickets in a rain-affected draw.England’s selection discussions this time around will be coloured by the fact that Stuart Broad and Jofra Archer missed both warm-up games with sickness, while James Anderson is in line to play his first Test since August, after suffering a calf injury that ruled him out of the Ashes. Chris Woakes, Sam Curran and Craig Overton are the other quicks in the party, along with Mark Wood, who is working his way back to fitness and won’t be available until the third Test.ALSO READ: England’s bug-struck trio play no part in warm-up”Yeah, I think it is,” Silverwood said in response to whether it was possible England could play an all-seam attack. “Obviously in Hamilton we looked at all the stats, who took wickets at the ground, and it showed that spin didn’t really play much part in the games, or certainly have much effect on the games.”We look at the stats for this ground, it’s the same thing, you’re looking at wickets taken by seam, wickets taken by spin and the averages that go along with them, it suggests that seam is the way forward, and the thing that has most effect on the game here, so we’re certainly looking at that.”Leach played in Mount Maunganui at the start of the New Zealand series, taking 2 for 153 as England went down by an innings, but was then hospitalised by a bout of gastroenteritis in Hamilton before falling unwell on the team’s arrival in South Africa. Uncapped legspinner Matt Parkinson was the back-up slow bowler originally selected in the party and England have also called up Leach’s Somerset team-mate Dom Bess as cover.”We’ve got some good resources in the spin department, Leachy is coming back to fitness now, we’ve got Dominic Bess here as well, Parky who bowled nicely in Benoni. So we’ve got the resources but we’re looking at it for what it is, what has most effect in this game. We’re not definitely going down the road of all seam, but it’s something we’ve got to discuss over the next few days.Jofra Archer and Stuart Broad were both fit to train•Getty Images”It’s not rocket science, every team has these stats. You look at what’s effective on that ground and then you look at what you’ve got in your arsenal and try to put out the best side you can.”Broad and Archer both delivered five-over spells at training in Centurion on Monday, as well as batting in the nets, as they looked to prove their match fitness for the first Test. Silverwood echoed Joe Root’s view that England will be relying on “trust” when it comes to their capability of getting through a full five days, although he admitted there “maybe a little bit more caution” over Archer, who is just six Tests into his career.”I think they’re exactly where we’d hope they would be really, if they continue with another couple of good days training, all being well they’ll be able to throw their hats in the ring for selection for the first Test,” he said.Asked if it might be considered a gamble to go into the Test with Broad, Archer and Anderson in the same XI, Silverwood replied: “I don’t think so, as long as from the medical point of view they feel good.”Anderson was the pick of the England bowlers in their three-day game in Benoni that finished on Sunday, claiming tidy figures of 3 for 41 as South Africa A made kept Root’s men in the field for 93.2 overs. With the bat, England saw Joe Denly and Ollie Pope score centuries, and Silverwood was pleased with the application that underpinned a total of 456 for 7 declared.”I thought both teams came away with something positive, I know we certainly did,” he said. “If you look at it from a first-innings runs point of view, we’re continuing to build those methods and create good habits there. From a bowling perspective we got over in the legs of Jimmy and the rest of the bowlers, and they all started finding their rhythm, which was great.”

Update: Sky Sports share huge Ruben Amorim development out of Liverpool

There has been a major development regarding Liverpool's pursuit of Ruben Amorim, according to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg.

Amorim Liverpool's No.1 manager target

It has become clear in recent weeks that the 39-year-old is now the favourite to become the man to replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield this summer. The German announced that he would leave the Reds back in January, having felt as though he has taken his team as far as he can.

For a while, Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso looked like the most likely option to come in, not only because of his continued brilliance at the Bundesliga side, but also due to his past links with Liverpool, spending five memorable years there as a player between 2004 and 2009.

Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim

Since Alonso confirmed that he would be staying at Leverkusen for the foreseeable future, however, the Sporting CP boss has been the man that many want to see come in, and a report over the weekend suggested that FSG had opened talks for Amorim.

He has admitted that he won't definitely stay at Sporting this summer, which immediately suggests that his head may have been turned by Liverpool's interest, and now a significant update has emerged regarding his current situation.

Sky Sports share Ruben Amorim update

Taking to X on Tuesday morning, Plettenberg claimed that Liverpool now have a "verbal agreement" in place with Amorim over being their next manager, with a contract until the summer of 2027 on the table.

"News Ruben Amorim. Been told there’s a verbal agreement in principle with Liverpool now! Amorim wants to join LFC next season and Liverpool was pushing for him in the last weeks. He can sign a contract until 2027 – confirmed!

"Final negotiations wit @SportingCP are still pending. It‘s not a done deal yet. More steps needed. Deal can still fall through. The 39 y/o was also on the list of FC Bayern but it was never advanced. Chelsea have inquired about him."

Sporting's Ruben Amorim

This is the biggest update yet when it comes to Liverpool's efforts to bring in Amorim, suggesting that it could be a matter of time until he is confirmed as Klopp's successor on Merseyside.

Ever since Alonso ruled himself out of the running, the Sporting boss has looked like the strongest candidate to come in, with his credentials speaking for himself as a manager.

Still only 39 years of age, Amorim has already won one Primeira Liga title with his current side, and it would be a big surprise if a second didn't come his way this season, with Sporting four points clear of Benfica at the top of the table with a game in hand.

Sean Williams Zimbabwe's new Test captain; Chamu Chibhabha to lead in ODIs and T20Is

Zimbabwe Cricket announced Sean Williams as the new Test captain, with Chamu Chibhabha picked to lead in ODIs and T20Is on an “interim” basis. A ZC release said the appointments were recommended by former captain and current director of cricket Hamilton Masakadza, who were then “unanimously endorsed” by the ZC Board at a meeting in Harare on Tuesday.”The role of captain is an honour and a responsibility which Sean and Chamu thoroughly deserve, both of them being exceptional players and great servants of our game over the years,” Masakadza said.”I am delighted that they have accepted their new roles and I extend my congratulations to them and wish them all the best as they help to take Zimbabwe to the next level.”Williams was Zimbabwe’s T20I captain the last time they played, during a tri-series involving Nepal and hosts Singapore in October last year. Zimbabwe lost a match to Singapore in the series but effectively won the tri-series by finishing on top, as Williams was named Man of the Match in two of their four games. Williams will, incidentally, take over as captain from Masakadza, who led them in their last Test, against Bangladesh in November 2018.Masakadza retired in September 2019 and took up his new position in the board a month later as ZC restructured its management.Williams has played 179 international matches, while Chibhabha, with 139 international games to his name, will lead in international cricket for the first time. Chibhabha, however, hasn’t played international cricket in more than a year, having last featured in a T20I against South Africa in October 2018.ZC also announced a new selection panel to be led by former international quick bowler David Mutendera, and Gavin Ewing, Shepherd Makunura and Prosper Utseya the other members.”Congratulations to all the selectors. Their qualifications and experience speak for themselves,” Masakadza said. “David is a respected former international who boasts massive playing and coaching experience, while he has also previously served as a national selector.”Gavin has done exceptional work as a coach and national Under-19 selector since he retired from playing international cricket a few years ago and we are fortunate to draw from his heap of experience. Shepherd is a veteran coach who has earned the reputation of being a serial winner, dominating the domestic competitions with his Mountaineers side in recent seasons, and his appointment to the selection panel is well-deserved.”Retaining Prosper on the panel will not only guarantee continuity but will also ensure that the game keeps benefitting from his massive knowledge of the game and experience.”Walter Chawaguta, who was the convener of selectors since May 2018, will now be the Rhinos’ head coach, to be assisted by Stanley Chioza, who has been replaced as national team analyst by Mufaro Chiturumani. The ZC release further said the board will announce a fielding coach and a mental strength coach in “due course”, and confirmed the other support staff members as follows: Lalchand Rajput (head coach), Dilip Chouhan (manager), Stuart Matsikenyeri (batting coach), Douglas Hondo (bowling coach), Walter Karimanzira (strength and conditioning trainer), Lovemore Banda (logistics manager) and Darlington Majonga (media manager).Zimbabwe are due to host Ireland (April), India (August-September) and Netherlands (September) this year and are scheduled to travel to Bangladesh, Australia and Sri Lanka.

Tottenham ready to seal potential "bargain" transfer for Ange this summer

Tottenham are apparently ready to seal a potential "bargain" deal for Ange Postecoglou this summer, and it involves a player who boasts 12 goals and 14 assists in all competitions this season.

Following what has been a very positive debut campaign in the dugout for Postecoglou, Spurs are said to be contemplating how best to back the Australian with key additions this summer.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 10, 2024

For Postecoglou, it is very much about the long-term project, and the Lilywhites boss has stated on multiple occasions that the race for fourth spot isn't a top priority for him.

"It's a sign of progress," said Postecoglou on Tottenham's top-four hopes.

"We didn't do that last year, but it's not the end goal, and it doesn't ensure you or help you the following year. You look at Man Utd, Newcastle, they're in the Champions League – it doesn't guarantee you anything the following year, just because you make it, that it elevates you.

"The challenge is to keep growing, and that's why I say about it's not just about being a top-four team, it's about trying to win things, be successful, be No 1, and part of that process is to get up to that level, keep going but then keep going."

For supporters who have gone 16 years without seeing Tottenham win a major piece of silverware, with their last one being a Carling Cup triumph against Chelsea in 2008, this will be music to their ears.

However, to reach that very next level, Postecoglou will need the backing of chairman Daniel Levy – which looks very likely to be the case.

According to reports, Spurs will look to bring in a new central midfielder when the window reopens, as faithful servant Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could depart N17.

Hojbjerg, while very reliable and can put in a great performance, isn't exactly tailor-made for Postecoglou's system – hence the links to potential upgrades.

Tottenham on "high alert" and "ready to seal" Dewsbury-Hall deal

Journalist Pete O'Rourke has an update on this for Football Insider, involving Leicester City star Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

The Foxes midfielder has bagged a brilliant 12 goals and 14 assists in all competitions across 23/24, which has proved crucial for Leicester in their bid to climb back to the top flight at the first time of asking.

Leicester midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

As per O'Rourke, Tottenham are "ready to seal" a potential "bargain" deal for Dewsbury-Hall – who is apparently very likely to depart if Enzo Maresca's side fail to secure promotion.

Indeed, Spurs chiefs are said to be on "high alert" over the 25-year-old's possible availability, alongside both Brighton and Brentford.

The Paris Saint-Germain outcast was closely linked with a move to Bayern Munich this summer, however, Sky Germany now reports that the Dutch international will head back to RB Leipzig for the upcoming 2024/25 campaign on yet another loan deal.

The report further claims that the 21-year-old has picked RB Leipzig over a move to Munich as he felt that he has a more secure role at his current club where he scored 25 goals across all competitions last season. PSG and the Bundesliga side are all set to meet later this week to finalise a second loan deal for the player.

DID YOU KNOW?

Manchester United were also linked with a move for the attacker earlier in the summer, however, they did not submit an official proposal with the Ligue 1 champions. They instead signed Simons' compatriot and fellow Netherlands international Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna.

New Zealand merit more MCG invites after record crowd

NZ drew the MCG’s biggest non-Ashes Boxing Day crowd in cricket’s professional era

Boult thanks ‘amazing’ fans for Boxing Day support

New Zealand drew the MCG’s biggest non-Ashes Boxing Day crowd in cricket’s professional era as its chief executive David White suggested they would happily be more regular guests for the showpiece day of the Australian Test match calendar after a 32-year wait for this opportunity.Australia last hosted New Zealand for a Test match on Boxing Day in December 1987, and despite that match’s healthy attendance of 51,087 on day one and 127,184 for five days, the trans-Tasman neighbours had been relegated to early season Test series for the intervening years as Cricket Australia chased fixtures against countries that offered more lucrative overseas broadcasting deals.ALSO READ: ‘I’m still having therapy from that Boxing Day Test match in 1987’However, the roll up of 80,473 to the MCG was the most sizeable Boxing Day attendance outside of England visits since 85,661 turned up to see Greg Chappell’s team face the West Indies in 1975 – two years before the World Series Cricket split. It made a compelling visual and financial case for New Zealand to be invited to play Test matches during the holiday season more often.Biggest non-Ashes Boxing Day crowds

80,473 v New Zealand, 2019

73,812 v South Africa, 1997

73,516 v India, 2018

“It’s an event that’s always been held in high regard by both Australians and New Zealanders, and I know a lot of Kiwis have been looking forward to being at the MCG today,” White said. “The NZC and CA boards have an excellent relationship with a lot of bilateral exchanges in recent years and we’re confident that will continue into the future.”The MCG crowd was not only large but also lively, with the vast New Zealand presence bringing plenty of extra noise and life to the occasion, from the playing of the national anthems and the roar when Trent Boult bowled Joe Burns in the day’s opening over, to the chorus of boos that greeted the exit of David Warner and the entry of Steven Smith late in the morning session.”I thought he crowd was amazing really, 80,000 I saw come up on the total tally there in that last session,” Boult said. “The Kiwi support was pretty cool, a lot of teal, a lot of black caps, and some good support from back home. I’m sure they had a good day, but we’ve got a lot of work still left in the match.”I was actually quite nervous before the whole start of the match and I don’t remember the first ball, but it was nice to get that one [to Joe Burns] right and full and straight and to see it swing back – of course [it would be the same] in any Test match, but with 80,000 people watching you it was pretty exhilarating.”The spectators were treated to an absorbing contest between bat and ball on an MCG surface that offered significantly more bounce and marginally more seam movement than those prepared for the past two years.According to CricViz, the amount of seam movement on offer over the first two sessions of day one stood at 0.58 degrees, compared to 0.52 degrees for the same sessions of Australia’s Test match against India in 2018 and 0.47 degrees against England in 2017. Overcast and somewhat muggy conditions also aided the New Zealand bowlers in their pursuit of bend through the air, fetching 1.7 degrees of swing in the first 30 overs versus 0.9 degrees of swing for the corresponding period of the India Test.Whether this was enough movement to ensure a result remained up in the air by the close of day one, as the Australian top order fought their way into a decent position through the efforts of Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, David Warner and Matthew Wade remained to be seen. Even so, there was still useful movement on offer for the likes of Colin de Grandhomme with the old ball late in the day.Stuart Fox, the MCC chief executive, has stated bluntly that the pitch needed to reap early wickets because it was unlikely to deteriorate. “Ours haven’t shown that [deterioration], so that’s why we’re trying to liven up things at the earlier stages of the game – the lateral seam movement is quite important,” Fox said recently. “Age has been a bit of a factor with the pitches. As we move forward the next three years we’ll have new pitches here, then hopefully there might be a new brand of cricket for the MCG.”Warner, who had started his innings fluently, was noticeably discomforted towards the end of his innings when he was struck on the chest by a prancing delivery from Boult, and he did not look comfortable again before edging a full delivery from Neil Wagner into the slips cordon six balls later.

Dom Bess pushing for Cape Town selection amid Jack Leach fitness struggle

Joe Root describes Bess as “very able back-up” as England ponder spinner’s inclusion

England have confirmed that Dom Bess, the off-spinning allrounder, will remain with the squad when they move on to Cape Town for the second Test. While Bess was not an original member of the tour party, he was added to the squad when it became clear that Jack Leach, in particular, was struggling with the sickness bug that has now affected, by Joe Root’s reckoning, 14 England players.Leach, England’s first-choice spinner on this trip, has been quarantined in his hotel room for more than a week and is thought unlikely to have recovered in time to be considered for the second Test, which starts on January 3. Leach was recently hospitalised by an attack of gastroenteritis during the second Test in New Zealand, with his situation complicated by his history of Crohn’s disease. As a result, his long-term fitness may have deteriorated and England will be reluctant to risk his recovery by rushing him back into the team.ALSO READ: Silverwood defends Root’s decision to bowl firstCraig Overton, the Somerset seam-bowling allrounder, will also remain with the squad in the knowledge that the sickness bug may yet claim more victims. While no more players reported symptoms on the final day of the match in Centurion, several family members of players are now understood to be unwell. But it is the retention of Bess that is most intriguing. All the indications from training and conversations with the England management suggest he has drawn ahead of Matt Parkinson, the other spinner originally selected in the touring squad, and could well be in line to play in Cape Town if, as expected, England decide they need to include a spin bowler. That, in turn, will lead to an interesting selection decision, with one of Jofra Archer, Sam Curran, James Anderson and Stuart Broad likely to miss out. While Root, the England captain, did not specify which spinner was in pole position to play in Cape Town there did appear to be a hint about the new pecking order in his phraseology.”It’s been really a tough month or so for Jack Leach, having gone down in New Zealand as well,” Root said. “It’s really sad and really hard for him.”We’re trying to manage that as best we can. We’ve got some very able back-up in Dom Bess and we’ve got Matt Parkinson as well as another option. We’ll turn up at Cape Town, look at the surface and make our decision.”Although Bess’ first-class record with the ball for Somerset is modest (while he averages 23.93 at Taunton, that jumps to 37.89 away), the England management feel he is a much-improved bowler since making a surprise Test debut in 2018. He has recently been on a spin-bowling camp in Mumbai, where he worked with Rangana Herath, and has returned, they believe, with greater control and venom in his bowling.Parkinson, meanwhile, has endured a tough winter so far. His three red-ball games for England (two here and one in New Zealand) have accrued two wickets for 235 runs from 52 overs and it seems a decision may have been made to limit his immediate international future to the white-balls teams. Bess is, by some distance, also the better fielder and batsman and made a half-century on Test debut. It says much for the dearth of England’s spin options, however, that they are picking between two men who are far from assured of selection in their county sides. Bess was obliged to go out on loan to get some cricket in 2019 – he played four first-class matches for Yorkshire and seven for Somerset – while Parkinson was picked for just four Championship games by Lancashire. There was better news of most of England’s other first-choice options. Ollie Pope, who missed the Centurion Test due to illness, has returned to training and is thought likely to be fit to return for the second match. Jonny Bairstow, who made 10 runs in his two innings, looks especially vulnerable.Perhaps, to an extent, Bairstow might count himself unfortunate. Having been dropped ahead of the New Zealand tour, he has not had the benefit of any first-class cricket to rebuild his game, though he was sent on a training camp in South Africa ahead of this tour. If he was a bit unlucky in the first innings – he received a delivery which kept low – his second innings dismissal, chasing a wide one without a lot of foot movement, was ugly.Equally, looking back a bit further, he may feel he was unnecessarily unsettled by talk of giving Jos Buttler the gloves and moving him up the order. He was never keen to bat at No. 3, despite making a century there in Colombo last year, and never keen to give up the gloves. For a while, albeit three or four years ago now, he was scoring heavily at No. 7. It might have been best to leave him to it.Ultimately, though, he will know that the responsibility to score runs – wherever he bats, whatever the situation – is down to him. And, over the last 12 months, his average of just 18.55 from 10 Tests doesn’t make much of a case for his defence.

£69m player now excited by chance of joining Arsenal this summer

Arsenal have been handed a real transfer boost in their pursuit of a £69 million target, as his stance over a north London move comes to light.

Arteta furious at Bayern Munich goals in Arsenal draw

The Gunners rescued a 2-2 draw from their Champions League first-leg tie against Bayern Munich on Tuesday evening, and there are plenty of positives to take from a very entertaining clash at the Emirates Stadium.

Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal are set to sign "important" striker

The Gunners are intending to bring in a star number nine.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 9, 2024

Serge Gnabry's strike and a Harry Kane penalty cancelled out Bukayo Saka's opener, with Arsenal trailing the Bundesliga giants at half-time. Mikel Arteta's side did manage to keep their composure, though, and eventually clinched an equaliser just under 15 minutes from full-time – courtesy of Leandro Trossard.

One aspect of the 90 which infuriated Arsenal's manager was the manner in which they conceded their two goals, with Arteta claiming his team gifted Bayern the opportunities.

“In the Champions League you cannot give anything to the opponent and we gave them two goals today,” said Arteta on Arsenal's draw with Bayern.

“When you have this situation you are going to be punished. And that is the biggest lesson. The margins are very small in this competition and it is really difficult to create quality chances against this level of opposition. But I think the team showed a lot of composure, especially after 2-1 – you can throw your toys away and give your opponents a lot of space but we haven’t done that and the substitutes made a huge impact.

“I sense the belief among the players that we are going to go to Munich next week and be better.”

Defensively, the likes of Ben White, William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes have been revelations under Arteta since the start of 2022/2023, but it is believed sporting director Edu is planning to source more quality to shore up their backline further.

One player to be regularly linked is Sporting Lisbon starlet Ousmane Diomande.

Sporting centre-back Ousmane Diomande.

As previously reported, Arsenal hold a very serious interest in signing Diomande this summer, with TEAMtalk now sharing a potential advantage for them in the race for his signature.

Diomande excited by prospect of joining Arsenal

According to their information, Diomande is excited by the prospect of joining Arsenal and he prefers a move to north London over Chelsea – who are also interested.

This has apparently catapulted Arteta and Edu into pole position to secure the £69 million Ivorian's services, which will come as good news where supporters are concerned.

Called an "elite talent" by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, Diomande has been a fixture in Ruben Amorim's side this season with over 20 Primeira Liga appearances and seven starts in Europe at just 20 years of age.
