Sam Curran gets into Ashes swing as Australia find going tougher

Tourists lose last six wickets for 17 before Dom Sibley’s 74 underpins Lions reply

Two sights signalled this as day one of the Ashes campaign for England, though still in the afterglow of a scarcely believable triumph in Sunday’s World Cup final over New Zealand at Lord’s.The first was that of the England selectors Ed Smith and James Taylor making their presence known by striding around the St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury, demonstrating their intent to finalise a Test squad, to face Ireland and then Australia, by Wednesday. The second came in the middle, where the left-armer Sam Curran obliterated the touring XI’s middle and lower order with the second new ball on his way to figures of 6 for 95.Where on day one the Australians had dominated through Travis Head and Matthew Wade as both sides kept one eye on events in London, now the spectre of a swerving Dukes ball in skilful hands was raised by Curran, a highly impressive performer in his first home summer as a Test player last year and likely to figure again this time around.Alongside Head, who remained impassable throughout, Mitchell Marsh, Tim Paine and company would have hoped to bat well into the afternoon. However Curran was able to swerve his way through five Australians in the space of four overs, engineering the loss of the last six touring wickets for 17.Marsh was first to go in circumstances that looked contentious – certainly the batsman thought so. Given out caught behind, Marsh made to remonstrate with the umpire, stood his ground for several moments and then trudged his way off with slow reluctance familiar to those who once watched Inzamam-ul-Haq for Pakistan.Such a display of disagreement was not to be repeated by the rest, who fell with blinding speed. Paine was pinned in front of the stumps for a duck, Michael Neser edged behind, and then Chris Tremain was bowled first ball to have Curran on a hat-trick. Jackson Bird found three runs to avert that at least, but his exit was swiftly followed by Jon Holland shouldering arms to hand Lewis Gregory a third wicket. The England Lions innings was thus underway far sooner than expected, and even as wickets fell regularly the Australians were unable to create quite the same level of mayhem throughout the rest of the afternoon. Plucky resistance was provided by Dom Sibley, spending precisely four hours over his 74, and James Bracey also hung around for a stand worth 89.Curran was then in to bat for the final hour or so, playing attractively in the company of Sam Hain, who lofted Head for six down the ground before being well taken by Paine off Holland’s slow left-arm in the day’s final over – a reward for two tidy, thoughtful spells. That gave Australia’s selection chairman Trevor Hohns, in attendance alongside Messrs Smith and Taylor, a little more to ponder ahead of Ashes squad selections.

Estava desenhada a virada.

Perry ton powers Australia to ODI series win over West Indies

Alyssa Healy, Beth Mooney and Ashleigh Gardner also made half-centuries after captain Meg Lanning withdrew pre-game due to back spasms

The Report by Alex Malcolm09-Sep-2019A gritty century from Ellyse Perry in the stifling Antigua heat helped Australia secure the three-match ODI series against West Indies 2-0 with a crushing 151-run win.The simplicity of the scoreline concealed a day of drama. Australia captain Meg Lanning was withdrawn from the match moments before the toss following back spasms, forcing a hasty cap presentation to debutant Erin Burns, while Beth Mooney was forced to retire hurt late in Australia’s innings due to heat exhaustion. But despite Rachael Haynes, the designated vice-captain, taking over the reins, normal service resumed after Australia won the toss. Alyssa Healy continued her sparkling form, clubbing a 33-ball half-century as she put on a 56-run opening stand with Haynes inside the first ten overs before the stand-in captain fell for 13 off the penultimate ball of the Powerplay.Perry, elevated to No. 3, was slow to get going and got a reprieve early before her supreme fitness carried her to an unbeaten 112 from 118 balls, her second ODI century and her fourth for Australia in all formats, to anchor the innings as Australia made their second successive score of 308 [they made 4 for 308 in the first game].”At the start, I was probably a little bit mentally AWOL,” Perry said after the match. “I was probably lucky, to be fair, after getting dropped early, but that seemed to sort of pick me up a little bit.”After Healy holed out off Chinelle Henry for 58, Perry got great support from Mooney and Ashleigh Gardner. Mooney ground out 56 from 81 balls in a 129-run stand with Perry before the heat got the better of her, and she was forced to retire at the end of the 42nd over.It gave Gardner just 48 balls to make an impact and she did more than that, hitting six fours and three sixes in a 23-ball half-century to equal Meg Lanning’s record for the fastest fifty by an Australian woman in ODI cricket. She finished on 57 not out off 25 balls and watched Perry smack the last ball of the innings to the cover-point fence. The pair made 86 runs in the last eight overs of the innings.”Obviously it was a real shame with Meg going down just before the game but I guess that sort of gave other people an opportunity and everyone slid up,” Perry said. “I really enjoyed my time out in the middle today but I think there was some great contributions, Midge (Healy) at the start and for Ash to do what she did, that’s what she’s capable of and what we know she’s capable of, so that really got us up over 300 to get a great total on the board.”Perry took the new ball and made the early breakthrough trapping Stacy-Ann King plumb in the fourth over. West Indies’ under-strength line-up then made virtually no attempt to chase down the total. After being bowled out for 130 inside 38 overs in the first ODI in Coolidge, the home side managed to bat out their 50 overs in the chase on Sunday, but crawled to 8 for 157. Kyshona Knight top-scored with 32 but took an excruciating 81 deliveries to compile them. Sheneta Grimmond was the only batter to strike at better than 54, making a 31 not out from 37 late in the game, at No. 8. Australia used eight bowlers with six of them claiming wickets. Georgia Wareham had the best figures of 2 for 29 although her two wickets came from what were among the worst deliveries of the day.”It’s an interesting situation at the moment,” Perry said. “Obviously they [West Indies] have got a number of their key players missing. I think from a confidence point of view, and match awareness and knowing how to take the game – I think it’s a real challenge. From that point of view, it’s up to us to make them play but also be really meticulous on our standards.”In the first game we bowled way too many extras and probably today we bowled a few too many but all in all I think it’s been great to challenge ourselves to try things to try and execute things.”

Chelsea must regret releasing "superb" talent who’s now worth £60m

There have been plenty of impressive performances in the Premier League this year, from Crystal Palace's win at Old Trafford to Arsenal's hammering of West Ham United. Still, there is an argument that Chelsea's draw away to Manchester City over the weekend is just as impressive as any.

Mauricio Pochettino's side managed to go to the home of the Treble winners and come away with a point that nobody saw coming, and it could've been three had their frontline been more clinical.

It would appear as if the Argentine is finally starting to get a tune out of his inexperienced but talented squad. However, there will always be questions about the club's recruitment policy, especially after they released so many of their own gifted youngsters in the past, such as Declan Rice.

joshua-kimmich-declan-rice-liverpool-opinion

That said, while allowing the Englishman to leave will always haunt the Pensioners, another rising star who looks destined to reach the very top of the game was released by the club as a teenager.

The rise of Michael Olise

Now, there are plenty of examples of former Chelsea prospects who've been released and gone on to do great things in the game, such as the aforementioned Rice and Jamal Musiala, but the decision to release Michael Olise as a youngster could rank as one of the Pensioners' worst.

Yes, the Blues did, in fact, have the talented Frenchman on their books for seven years when he joined from cross-city rivals Arsenal in July 2009 before leaving in July 2016.

A few weeks of playing in City's youth teams would follow, but the dynamic attacker would eventually spend six months without a club before finally signing for Reading, following several showcase events in London.

One of the men who ran these events was Sean Conlon, who had known Olise for years, and he claimed that the scouts at these events were "in disbelief about how good Michael was", which, considering his performances for Palace, isn't hard to believe.

In two and a bit seasons of senior football for the Royals, he scored seven goals and provided 14 assists. He also won the EFL Young Player of the Season award for the 2020/21 campaign.

Just a couple of months later, he was snapped up by the Eagles for around £8m in what now looks like one of the best transfers completed by a Premier League side in recent years.

How Michael Olise has performed for Crystal Palace

The Hammersmith-born gem made his Palace debut on 11 September 2021 and has been terrifying defenders ever since.

In that first season for the Eagles, the "superb" dynamo, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, scored four goals and provided eight assists in just 31 appearances.

His goalscoring took a hit the following year, but his creativity flourished, and he ended the campaign with two goals and 11 assists to his name in 40 appearances.

Unfortunately, the 22-year-old has been blighted by injury this season, but even so, he has managed a seriously impressive six goals and three assists in 11 appearances for the south Londoners.

This impressive form led to plenty of speculation and rumours about a possible move to Chelsea or City in the summer – with the Blues reportedly activating a release clause in his contract.

However, instead of leaving, Olise opted to sign a new deal at Selhurst Park, which Steve Kay of Football Transfer reported last month could include a release clause worth £60m, meaning that releasing Olise as a youngster could prove costly for the Blues should they go back in for him in the summer.

Chelsea sold homegrown whiz for £180k and now he's worth £128m

The “ice-cold” gem has an incredibly bright future ahead, having left the Blues academy in the past.

Ultimately, things are looking up for Pochettino's young team, but the Argentine would've surely loved to have a player of Olise's quality in his squad.

Klopp replacement: Liverpool’s manager target delighted by Anfield links

A potential wildcard appointment as Liverpool's next manager has spoken of his delight at being linked with the soon-to-be-available job at Anfield.

Who will replace Jurgen Klopp?

This may be a thrilling season for the Reds currently, with a quadruple not out of the question, but with each passing week, they edge closer to Jurgen Klopp's exit. His decision to leave this summer sent shockwaves across Merseyside and the football world, and replacing him is going to be almost impossible.

There is a growing list of potential successors to the German, however, but as has been the case for a while now, Xabi Alonso looks to be the standout candidate. He is now within touching distance of winning the Bundesliga title with Bayer Leverkusen, and victory away to FC Koln on Sunday would take his side 10 points clear at the top of the table.

Inter manager Simone Inzaghi has also been linked with taking over from Klopp in the summer, with the Italian on the verge of title glory himself in Serie A, while Julian Nagelsmann is another option, with the 36-year-old potentially leaving his role as Germany boss after Euro 2024.

A more left-field choice has also emerged in recent days, with Lens manager Franck Haise seen as a surprise candidate to arrive at Anfield once Klopp is gone.

Franck Haise flattered by Liverpool links

With quotes relayed by RMC Sport [via Sport Witness], Haise discussed being linked with the Liverpool job, failing to hide his delight.

"What can I say? It’s a good thing. It’s recognition for a job well done. A job that I don’t do alone, by the way. If we’re talking about the data, the work on the data, the results, the principles of the game."

Haise would certainly be an interesting choice by FSG to fill the void left by Klopp, with the 52-year-old similarly data-driven to former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards, who has been linked with a return to Anfield this summer, but wanting to have more control than before.

Lens have adopted a 'Moneyball' approach under Haise, which is something Edwards did so effectively during his excellent stint with the Reds, making the most of the underlying numbers of players and turning them into huge assets, from Sadio Mane to Mohamed Salah, for example.

Liverpool have already scouted "incredible" £80m star ahead of the summer

This would be the perfect start to the Reds’ post-Klopp era.

ByTom Cunningham Mar 1, 2024

Not only is the 42-year-old excelling as a manager, coming so close to sealing title glory with Leverkusen, but he also understands Liverpool as a club after spending five years there between 2004 and 2009. Like Klopp, he respects the values of the city, and considering he is still a young boss, he is the natural choice to come in for years to come.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

PSG are believed to have stopped all payments to Mbappe in February after he informed club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi of his plans to leave, according to Info Blast. The Ligue 1 champions believed they reached a gentleman's agreement with Mbappe last summer to give up some salary payments. The club also want him to repay an €80m (£67m/$85m) loyalty bonus he received in October. PSG believed Madrid would pay the loyalty bonus but Los Blancos were unaware of the situation and have no intention of paying up.

  • WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

PSG have told Info Blast: "The player pledged to protect the club upon his departure, firstly giving assurances that he would not leave on a ‘free transfer’ and then if his departure was ultimately a free transfer, agreeing not to leave “for free” (in other words, giving up certain financial rights), which is what some recent holdbacks relate to."

Sri Lanka Cricket to reassess security in Pakistan after terror threat

Sri Lanka’s forthcoming tour of Pakistan has been thrown into doubt after Sri Lanka’s government is said to have received news of a “possible terrorist threat on the Sri Lanka team”.The team was scheduled to leave for the tour in less than two weeks, but the tour now hinges on a “reassessment of the security situation in Pakistan”. One security assessment – described as “meticulous” by an SLC official – had already been conducted, with the board formerly convinced that the tour was safe. But this new information about a specific threat on the team has sparked fresh fears.”Sri Lanka Cricket today sought the assistance of the Sri Lankan government to conduct a ‘reassessment’ of the security situation in Pakistan ahead of the national team’s planned tour to Pakistan,” a board release said.”The decision was taken following a warning SLC received from the Prime Minister’s office, sent via the Ministry of Telecommunication, Foreign Employment and Sports.”The warning highlights that the Prime Minister’s Office has received reliable information of a possible terrorist threat on the Sri Lankan team, while touring Pakistan.”The new information had been received on Tuesday evening by SLC, who had named their ODI at T20 squads for the tour late in the afternoon. With 10 frontline players already having refused to tour Pakistan, this new perceived threat may create apprehension among even the players who have agreed to travel.Cricket in Pakistan came to a halt in 2009, after the Sri Lanka team was attacked by gunmen on the way to the ground in Lahore. The first match of the tour was set to be played on September 27 in Karachi.

'Exceptional work ethic' sets new Bengal captain Abhimanyu Easwaran apart

Manoj Tiwary, the captain till last season, wants his successor to “not get too caught up in the job” and continue to enjoy the game

Shashank Kishore30-Aug-2019

Abhimanyu Easwaran will lead Bengal across formats in the 2019-20 season•PTI

Abhimanyu Easwaran’s career graph continues to rise. Already a regular opener with India A who is knocking on the doors of the national team, the 23-year-old Bengal player has now been handed the captaincy of the state team for the 2019-20 season across formats. It’s a move that has made both Arun Lal, the team mentor, and Manoj Tiwary, the man he replaced, happy and excited.”He hasn’t got runs on the West Indies tour [by India A] and in the Duleep Trophy, but he is a terrific batsman, very, very talented, and he has exceptional work ethic,” Lal told ESPNcricinfo. “He is young, and the best part about him is his work ethic, which is brilliant. He is very fit, and is always working hard to become fitter and a better cricketer.”I like him very much; he has been living alone in Calcutta, away from his family, for a while now, but it hasn’t affected his game at all. It’s quite remarkable. I also like that he is very respectful towards his seniors and towards his team-mates. I think it’s a good call.”ALSO READ: Abhimanyu Easwaran’s pragmatism strengthens cricketing passionLike Lal, Tiwary too has big hopes from Abhimanyu, who has risen to become one of their batting mainstays. Except for his debut season in 2013-14, when he averaged a measly 17.62, Abhimanyu has consistently been among the runs, often averaging in the high 40s, with 12 centuries and 17 half-centuries.”I will be very disappointed if he doesn’t play for India,” Tiwary said. “He’s worked hard to get here. I said it two years ago that he’s India material. He’s nearly there now, and hopefully he will wear that cap soon.”I only hope he is persisted with and is given a decent run, and shouldn’t be judged on the basis of a few low scores. He has a good technique and has the ability to leave balls. Once set, his scoring improves and he’s a different player.”The captaincy decision was made formal on Friday at a Cricket Association of Bengal meeting, where the selectors initially proposed a split-captaincy model with Abhimanyu as four-day captain and Tiwary as the limited-overs leader. Tiwary, however, felt the new captain “needed to given space” to make a difference.”The selectors proposed a split-captaincy model, but I insisted if they are thinking of a leadership change, it should be uniform,” Tiwary said. “That way the new captain gets a free hand to implement certain plans he may have in mind. Having different captains could only create some confusion, so I told them if this is what they’re thinking, they should hand over the captaincy across formats.”On the change, Lal suggested that “a captain should in any case be changed every three-four years”, partly for the team to move forward and partly because “the captain has contributed all he can contribute”.As for Tiwary, he wanted his successor to not let captaincy become a bugbear.”Abhimanyu is level-headed, approaches situations in a calm manner. As a senior player, my only advice to him will be to soak it all in and not get too caught up in the job, because you’re not just thinking for yourself but also the team,” Tiwary said. “He’s at a stage in his career where he’s also broken into the India A ranks and is in national contention. Sometimes, when you’re there, you tend to lose the enjoyment factor and take everything a tad too seriously.”I’m always around as a senior player to help him out. He will be his own man, but should he need any support, as a senior, I will be around to help him.”Tiwary looked back at his stint with pride, despite Bengal failing to win any silverware under him. While their search for a Ranji Trophy since 1989-90 continues, the side made the semi-finals two seasons ago, and have consistently been in the reckoning for the knockouts. Tiwary hoped the “fruits of labour” would bear fruit soon.”I will look back at my time as captain fondly. Yes, we couldn’t win the big Ranji Trophy, but we had a lot of improvements. A number of players we backed three or four years ago are coming through,” he said. “While the trophy may not be there, I’m happy to have handled the transition phase well. I can be at peace with myself, because I did the job with utmost sincerity and commitment.”
