Bates calls for more women's Tests with Ashes-like format in other series

Suzie Bates, New Zealand’s most capped female cricketer, does not have a Test appearance to her name. Five years ago, she felt “a bit cheated” at not having had the opportunity to play in the longest format, a run of luck that has not changed 13 years on from her international debut. Nearly a decade-and-a-half since New Zealand women last played a Test, the 31-year-old former national captain underscored that the onus rests on the boards of the top eight nations, rather than the ICC, to host “at least one annual Test”.”There’s a real opportunity for the boards, away from the ICC, to encourage at least one annual Test match between certain countries,” Bates told ESPNcricinfo, putting her weight behind the multi-format women’s Ashes as a template for other nations to follow.”The series structure of England versus Australia is brilliant. If we had, say, a tour of India and we decided we have three ODIs, three T20Is and one Test match, that would be one of the best experiences for our group. I believe there is a real opportunity for the top eight nations to host a Test match a year. I was speaking to Smriti [Mandhana, the 22-year-old India opener, during the Women’s T20 Challenge] the other night. She has played two Test matches; I haven’t played any (laughs). She couldn’t believe that.”The two Tests Mandhana featured in are the only ones India have played in the longest format in the last decade. In fact, outside of Australia and England, India are the only team alongside South Africa (one match) to have played women’s Tests at all since 2008, with only one Test (England v Australia) taking place since August 2015.Bates’ views on the need for national boards, other than only Australia and England, to back Test cricket for their women’s players come a little over a month after Australia captain Meg Lanning called on “big fish” India to “get involved” in promoting women’s Tests.Beyond her standing as a stalwart of the women’s game, the New Zealander’s stance on women’s Tests assume greater significance when viewed in light of her position as the only woman on the current MCC World Cricket Committee, an independent panel of former and current players and umpires, that can propose changes to the sport’s laws. Bates also offered another suggestion to get more countries involved in women’s Tests.”One other thing I thought about, and with my role at the MCC… I see a potential in the opportunity for some of the best cricketers to play Tests, outside of bilateral series if they do at all turn into a reality, is when England and Australia play their Ashes series,” said Bates, who was appointed to the committee in 2017.”They could pick a Rest of the World side to play a Test match each against England and Australia in the build-up to their Ashes. That’s another way to see what the standard is like, besides providing them [England and Australia] with another match because they only play one match as well.”That’s something I’ve sort of thought of randomly, and it might be a good way to give a push to women’s Tests. It’s a something I’ve thought of as a selfish thing because I’d love to play a Test, and if the Ashes are the only Test series you’re going to hold, I’d love to play an Ashes. How cool would that be, even though I am neither from Australia nor England?”Bates admitted that T20s are the best bet to grow women’s cricket, but if commercial viability is the only hurdle on the path of hosting more women’s Tests, boards could chose to cut costs by not broadcasting the game(s).”The Test match doesn’t need to be televised,” said Bates. “We don’t need to televise everything if that’s a reason for not holding Tests, and if you want to promote only the Twenty 20 format as much as you can. Do they go along the commercial side with no broadcast? Perhaps yes.”I do understand why Twenty20 cricket has become the main push for women’s cricket. And, look, without it we wouldn’t have been at the [Women’s] Big Bash [League], KSL [Kia Super League], or the Women’s T20 Challenge. I get why the boards want more T20 cricket for women because commercially… the television factor, the entertainment, so understandably that’s going to come first now, and I’m supportive of that.”Only last week, Bates was part of the first multi-team Women’s T20 Challenge, as one of the 12 overseas participants. The Player of the Match in the one-off exhibition that took place in 2018, under the same tournament banner, Bates underlined that the road-map for the Indian domestic tournament should take into consideration a few key factors going forward.”I’m an advocate for progression,” Bates said. “I do believe that by having last year’s exhibition game slightly bigger, longer this year, you get a peek into the problems, you get to talk to the people close to the women’s game about what’s right.”I think for me the No. 1 thing is the real clear window, so that we don’t miss the likes of the South Africa and Pakistan and Australians, so there’s plenty of information for the boards over a period of time and you are able to get the best of the best from around the world. It will lift the standard.”Where does Bates stand on the teams’ structure for next year’s edition?”The number of teams is a contentious issue,” Bates replied. “I don’t know the depth of Indian (domestic) cricket, but even three teams like this year had really good players on the sidelines. So I’d definitely root for four, but I see potential for six.”Once you put them out there, the next tier of players have something to look up to. They may be miles away from the Indian side right now, but if they see here are six teams training hard for a women’s IPL, playing in a women’s IPL, they will want to be a part of it. Initially there may be a gap, but in the following one or two years, it just naturally builds as we’ve seen in the Big Bash.”

Man Utd could raid PL club to sign "magical" £77m star alongside Olise

Like many clubs in the Premier League this January, Manchester United came into it unable to spend the seismic sum of money they'd probably like to improve their squad over the second half of the campaign.

United certainly need it too, sitting in seventh place in the top flight with the fourth-worst record in front of goal across the entire division.

Injuries have certainly played their hand in that too but Erik ten Hag has hardly set the world alight in the Old Trafford dugout.

Harry Maguire

He has tried, and rather failed to strengthen his squad courtesy of those he knew from the Eredivisie so why not delve into the Premier League for added bodies?

Man United looking to raid Crystal Palace

Reports from earlier in January stated that Michael Olise was one player on the radar of United. It was even stated that the club were ready to activate his £60m release clause at Selhurst Park.

However, he's not the only magical Palace star that Ten Hag seemingly has his heart set on sealing.

Michael Olise

According to reports in Spain over the last weekend, Eberechi Eze is another name being touted with a move to the northwest, although it would allegedly take a colossal £77m fee to secure a move.

It's stated that United are only willing to go to £60m to conclude a deal so some negotiation will have to be put into place here.

Eze supposedly has the objective of securing a move in the not-too-distant future, with a summer switch more likely to occur in 2024.

Erik ten Hag could have a new-look United team next month.

ByTom Lever Jan 22, 2024 How Olise and Eze could line up together

In the unlikely event that United were to secure a move for both Eze and Olise in the summer window, it could create a feared attack, one that would undoubtedly spark a dreary offensive line into life.

Ten Hag's men have only scored 24 times in the Premier League this term with Rasmus Hojlund a constant point of debate. The Dane has been on fire in Europe, bagging five goals, but on the domestic scene has been rather less potent. It took until Boxing Day for him to finally open his account in the league, with his tally now standing at two.

Olise and Eze are not players that will significantly boost the side's goal tallies but they will carve open opportunities at will. Indeed versus attacking midfielders and wingers in the Premier League this term, the latter sits inside the top 13% of players for key passes per 90 with 2.57. Olise, meanwhile, ranks in the best 9% with 2.66.

To put that into context, United's chief creator in Bruno Fernandes is averaging 2.75 key passes per 90, placing him in the top 6% of positionally similar players in the English top flight.

Essentially, this would be a striker's dream for Hojlund, playing with three creative marvels behind him (as seen below).

Eze would be a particularly eye-catching signing for a number of reasons. Described as a "magical" player whose dribbling ability is reminiscent of a "drunken master" by Paul Hall, a man who oversaw his development at QPR, there has been very little to stop the 25-year-old this season.

His numbers aren't barnstorming, scoring three goals and supplying three assists but the eye test here needs to do the talking. Against Arsenal on Saturday lunchtime, his Palace side lost 5-0 but Eze's involvement was still phenomenal, making two key passes and six successful dribbles.

Now imagine that in a team whose primary function is to attack. It's an exciting thought to behold and one that could become a reality in the summer. It feels unlikely that United would be able to sign both Olise and Eze but either one of them would be superb signings for Ten Hag's men who desperately need more about them in the final third.

Fabrizio Romano reacts to "excellent news" he’s heard about Leeds star

Leeds United look to be on an upward trajectory following a difficult campaign last year and Daniel Farke has now received some "excellent news" that will boost his side in the hunt for promotion, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Leeds United look for new arrivals…

New arrivals are usually the appeal of any transfer window for supporters, who will undoubtedly be excited to see which players are on the market and in search of a new challenge. Leeds haven't managed to add anyone to the ranks this month as of yet; nevertheless, this hasn't stopped rumours circulating from far and wide concerning the Championship outfit.

EFL Championship done deals: Every January 2024 transfer

West Ham United defender Ben Johnson continues to be linked with a move to Yorkshire and journalist Dean Jones has indicated that there could be some substance to recent claims stating Farke is keen to bring him in, as he told GIVEMESPORT: "From a Leeds perspective, it really does seem like they are going after a few players that have specific experience and traits. Ben Johnson, from West Ham, is attainable and could be the one."

Bournemouth attacking midfielder David Brooks is a name doing the rounds in media circles and could be an additional reinforcement for the Whites as they look to find star quality this month, according to talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook. In all likelihood, the Wales international could move over the next few weeks on a loan basis as he aims to get back to full stride following his incredible road to recovery from illness.

Now, transfer guru Romano has issued an exciting update involving an existing Leeds player in a massive boost for everyone connected with the club.

Fabrizio Romano buzzes over Archie Gray update

Taking to social media platform X, Romano has shared and reacted to some "excellent news" that youngster Archie Gray has put pen to paper on a new deal at the club that will see him remain at Elland Road until the summer of 2028.

Previously tied to the club he came through at until 2025, the 17-year-old has given Farke and company some much-needed security regarding his future following prolonged interest in his services last year from the likes of Liverpool, Everton and Crystal Palace.

Making a sustained breakthrough at Leeds United this campaign, the Durham-born midfielder has made 28 appearances in all competitions, registering one assist in his time on the pitch (Gray statistics – Transfermarkt).

Which Premier League players are at Copa America 2024?

All the Premier League players at Copa America 2024 – listed.

The Premier League will be supplying Copa America 2024 with a sizeable amount of players.

Fulham top the chart with five players, while Manchester City – who have as many as 14 players in Euro 2024 squads – has just one representative here.

Similarly, the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Newcastle United have but only a couple of players at the Copas this year.

Nation-wise Argentina would have as many as 10 players in their squad contracted with Premier League clubs for the 2024-25 season, while Brazil and the United States men's national team (USMNT) have eight and six players from the English top-flight respectively.

Peru, Chile, Venezuela, Panama, and Bolivia do not have any Premier League players in their squad; and there are no players from neither Brentford, Ipswich Town, Leicester City, Everton, nor Southampton.

Liverpool star whose value’s dropped 80% has been even worse than Keita

Over time, Liverpool supporters have come to trust Jurgen Klopp's judgement in the transfer market, with the illustrious Premier League outfit often delving down a shrewder road than their rivals when improving the squad.

While staple members Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk were signed for lofty figures, deals for iconic Klopp stars such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Andy Robertson and Joel Matip – certainly not an exhaustive list – were welcomed for bargain sums in today's jaw-dropping landscape.

The remarkable accuracy in the transfer market has left certain rivals rueing their own lack of discernment and has been the foundation of the Reds' success under Klopp's wing.

Jurgen Klopp

But it hasn't always gone well and there are a few deals littered throughout the German's tenure that are best left in distant memory.

Indeed, three-and-a-half years ago Liverpool ventured to sign Thiago Alcantara, long considered one of Europe's superlative centre-midfielders, though the Spain international's time on Merseyside has been marred by an incredible series of injury problems.

Liverpool's signing of Thiago Alcantara

It was 2020 and Liverpool were preparing for the eventuality of Gini Wijnaldum's sale; the Dutchman has one year remaining on his current contract and renewal looked unlikely. A replacement was needed.

Wijnaldum would indeed move to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer one year later but FSG moved to sign Thiago from Bayern Munich and wrapped up a deal for a fee rising to £25m.

Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara

Long regarded as a "magnificent" footballer with "outstanding technique" – as was once said by Phillip Lahm – the La Masia youth graduate had won honours in abundance throughout a glittering career, notably gleaning the Champions League with both Bayern and Barcelona, and his acquisition looked a no-brainer for a heavy metal Liverpool side transitioning toward a style with a tad more control and composure.

The one little concern was an unflattering injury record, but then there was hope that that wouldn't present too large a quandary.

Thiago Alcantara's Liverpool career so far

Thiago has completed 98 appearances for Liverpool and played a big role as Klopp chased a quadruple in 2021/22 – unsuccessfully, sure, but not without triumph in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

andre-thiago-alcantara-liverpool-opinion

The £200k-per-week star enjoyed success that year and actually started 17 Premier League matches during that season, completing 89% of his passes and averaging 1.2 key passes, 1.9 tackles and 4.5 successful duels per fixture, as per Sofascore.

He was important last season but fell to injury in the new year and made his final Premier League start against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the beginning of February.

Yet to feature from the outset since Thiago made his anticipated return off the bench during Liverpool's recent defeat against title rivals Arsenal, but got fans groaning after bewildering news that he had suffered a hamstring issue.

These incessant problems have caused the player's transfer value to plummet, with Football Transfers recording Thiago's current value at just £4m, which marks an 80% decrease – such has been the enormity of his decline.

Once praised for his "staggering" talents by pundit and former Liverpool man Michael Owen, Thiago has enjoyed some fine moments but all too often has watched on in shadowed obscurity as his confreres fight for honours.

He's not been the most expensive addition during Klopp's reign and while he carries the patina of a wisened and cultured veteran, he has been unable to strut his stuff with the slightest bit of regularity, and it remains to be seen if Liverpool will get more than a sliver out of his services before the end of the campaign.

Worse than Naby Keita

They say that availability is the best ability, and while this is worn-out phrasing it certainly speaks a truth regarding Thiago's Liverpool career.

Endowed with such scintillating technical ability and tactical intelligence that allows him to control matches with remarkable ease, Thiago is comfortably one of the best players to perform under Klopp at Liverpool, when going off raw quality alone.

However, raw quality is only one of many important facets down a winding path toward success and the 32-year-old's startling inability to maintain fitness has ravaged any hopes of etching his name into Premier League lore for his feats on the pitch.

This is not the first time Reds supporters have been led to get excited by a high-profile addition to the midfield, with Naby Keita's £53m acquisition back in 2018 supposed to be a game-changing move during Liverpool's primitive face under Klopp, who dubbed the Guinean "the complete midfielder."

In a similar decline, Keita managed only stuttering glimpses of the quality that prompted Klopp to grant such an expensive outlay, scoring 11 goals and supplying seven assists across 129 fixtures in all competitions for the Anfield side but, given that he completed five campaigns in England, this averages out to a measly 26 appearances per term.

To put that in perspective, Mohamed Salah averaged 51 games per season during the same period.

Like Thiago, Keita is among Europe's most naturally talented midfielders and has even been hailed for his "world-class" attributes by Virgil van Dijk in the past, but given that the former has reaped lucrative rewards across both German and Spanish pitches, it's hard to feel more aggrieved by Keita's struggles.

Naby Keita.

The end date draws ever closer and it's very hard to imagine a world where Thiago, who turns 33 in two months exactly, pens new terms and has another shot at crafting a successful campaign for himself.

There's a wistful air surrounding these closing months of Thiago's Liverpool career and it will very much go down as a transfer that offered some lovely, influential moments but ultimately failed to deliver even a portion of the goods.

Klopp's sweeping changes to the midfield last summer have allayed any fears that Thiago's exit might be detrimental but it is a real shame nonetheless. He's one of the finest footballers around.

Pakistan captaincy decision in PCB's hands – Sarfaraz Ahmed

The ball is now firmly in the PCB’s court after Sarfaraz Ahmed declared he wished to continue as captain of Pakistan in all three formats. Speaking shortly after landing in Karachi following Pakistan’s exit from the 2019 World Cup, Sarfaraz said the job had been given to him by the PCB, and any decision to replace him must come through the same channel.Sarfaraz had earlier in the year hinted he would take a decision on the Test captaincy following the World Cup, but now appears content to continue in the role unless asked to step aside. The PCB officially only makes appointments on a series-by-series basis, with managing director Wasim Khan set to head a cricket committee review of the last two years before making any recommendations on the future.”It’s not that I’m saying I refuse to resign. All I’m saying is the decision rests with the PCB, the same way as the decision to appoint me captain was taken by them,” Sarfaraz said. “I’m sure they’ll take the decision that’s best for Pakistan.”ALSO READ: Babar Azam up to No. 3 in ODI batting rankingsPakistan began their World Cup campaign disastrously following a thumping defeat to West Indies, the consequences of which stretched far beyond the loss of two points. It meant Pakistan were always catching up in terms of net run rate against their rivals in the race for the semi-final slots, a problem exacerbated by a heavy defeat against India that left them hanging by a thread. While they did stage a comeback following that game, winning their final four, they could only tie with New Zealand on 11 points, with the latter’s significantly superior net run rate meaning Pakistan fell just short. Speaking of the tournament in general, Sarfaraz found heart from the way Pakistan had responded to adversity, particularly after intense criticism, both professional and personal, following the loss to India.”We couldn’t do well against the West Indies in our tournament opener, but gained momentum by beating England, the home team and the favourites,” Sarfaraz said. “Because of the delay in our next match due to a washout against Sri Lanka, we had lost that momentum and it reflected in our performances against Australia and India.’This was my team and I had full authority over it’ – Sarfaraz Ahmed•PCB

“There’s always criticism when you play poorly, and we did play poorly initially. A lot of things happened after the India game that hurt the players deeply. We were distressed by that defeat like every fan. It was really difficult for us to cope with the things that happened in the next seven days. Some of the former players, who were commentating, were present there and provided us support and backing. I called up a meeting comprising just the 15 players in the squad and discussed what mistakes we might be making. The team responded really well, and everyone gave their honest opinions, and we bounced back and won the final four games.”Footage of Sarfaraz Ahmed walking around a shopping mall with his young son in his lap being repeatedly abused by a fan went viral on social media, with Sarfaraz’s decision not to react winning him much support among the general fanbase. It led to much criticism of the tone of the censure the players had received following the game against India, with a general softening in the days that followed, eased inevitably by the uptick in both form and results.”It wasn’t only me who was subjected to slurs by fans,” Sarfaraz revealed. “Many other players were also targeted in malls and other public places. Some things that happened did not get attention, but we reported all incidents to the management.”Anyhow, it is unfortunate that we couldn’t qualify due to NRR. But I am happy with every player. Everyone, regardless of their seniority or experience, contributed. I am also thankful to the coaching staff. They are normally behind the scenes and don’t get credit. But I am thankful to them and especially to Mickey Arthur who kept things together in that difficult time.”There were reports of malcontent in the first half of the campaign, with rumours of disagreements between the players and the management that had to be mediated by chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq, who, it had not escaped notice, was there with the team for much of the campaign. Sarfaraz, however, dismissed reports of infighting, and said there was no disagreement about squad selection, with coach Mickey Arthur, Inzamam and Sarfaraz himself all satisfied with the make-up of the final 15.”The whole squad was mine. The team for the first five matches was made by me, Inzi bhai, and Mickey. When you lose, a lot of things that should stay in the dressing room get leaked. The players that we needed, they were present. Except for Wahab Riaz, all the players had been playing in the recent years. This was my team and I had full authority over it.”Amir was never out of the team. People say that we selected him again, but we wanted Amir to play in England before he got chicken pox and couldn’t play in the bilateral series. We called on Wahab because we had realised we’d need an express pacer.”The performances overall have been good. The most junior bowler [Shaheen Afridi] picked up 16 wickets. Babar Azam playing his first World Cup batted brilliantly and scored a century and half-centuries. As a team, we put up a great fight. It is unfortunate we couldn’t qualify.”

Spurs show interest in £26m star who’d be their own Darwin Nunez

Tottenham Hotspur have already bolstered their attack this month with the signing of Germany international Timo Werner on loan from RB Leizpig.

Latest Spurs transfer news

The transfer window is due to slam shut this evening and Spurs have been linked with a possible move for another exciting attacker from the Bundesliga.

According to German outlet Sport Bild, via Sport Witness, the Lilywhites and fellow Premier League side Newcastle United are both showing an interest in Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou.

The report claims that his club are already preparing for his potential exit and estimate that they could rake in €30m (£26m) for his services, although it remains to be seen whether Spurs want to snap him up today or in the summer transfer window.

If they can secure a deal for his services, whether that is now or ahead of next season, Ange Postecoglou could have his own version of Darwin Nunez.

Why Omar Marmoush is similar to Darwin Nunez

The energetic Liverpool forward has divided opinion since his move to England from Benfica at the start of last season, due to his wayward finishing. That was particularly notable during their rampant 4-1 win over Chelsea on Wednesday night.

The Uruguayan was anything but rampant himself, remarkably hitting the woodwork four times in one game, a Premier League record.

It won't be surprising, therefore, to hear he has missed a staggering 40 'big chances' in the Premier League, and scored 16, over the last 18 months but the versatile 24-year-old also provides other qualities.

victor-boniface-darwin-nunez-west-ham-opinion

Over last 365 days, Nunez ranks within the top 13% of forwards in the Men's Big Five Leagues and European competitions for progressive carries (2.51) per 90, and the top 5% or higher for assists (0.30) and Expected Assisted Goals (0.26) per 90 respectively.

FBref list Marmoush as one of the most similar players to the Uruguay international over the past 365 days, and that is backed up by the Frankfurt star's statistics.

The 24-year-old ace ranks within the top 9% of his positional peers for progressive carries (2.71) and successful take-ons (1.96) per 90 respectively over the same period.

He also ranks within the top 18% or higher for assists (0.20) and xAG (0.20) per 90 for the German side, which speaks to his impressive creative ability.

Omar Marmoush's goal record this season

Both Marmoush and Nunez, as shown in the aforementioned statistics, can cause chaos for opposition defenders with their ball carrying and creativity, but the former has showcased his goalscoring quality as well this term.

The Egypt international has racked up 12 goals in 25 appearances for Frankfurt in all competitions so far this season, which includes four goals in five Europa Conference League appearances.

As you can see in the table above, Marmoush, who manager Dino Topmoller claimed has "blistering" pace, has been far more effective in the final third in the Bundesliga in comparison to Nunez in the Premier League this term.

In five fewer appearances, the Frankfurt star has scored as many goals from less xG and racked up almost as much xA through his creativity as a versatile forward, who can play on the left or through the middle – like the Liverpool ace.

Therefore, Postecoglou could land his own version of Nunez, and a player who could potentially offer more than him in the final third, by securing a deal to sign Marmoush today or in the summer.

No Martinelli or Havertz in Arsenal’s dream lineup after Jan if Toney signs

Three successive defeats in all competitions have plunged Arsenal into something of a mini-crisis heading into this much-needed winter break, with any lingering hopes of securing the title perhaps resting on whether or not the north Londoners are able to secure a top-class striker before the window slams shut in just a few weeks' time.

As chances were repeatedly spurned in an infuriating outing against rivals Liverpool in the FA Cup last week, club legend Ian Wright summed it up best by stating that his former side "need a killer" – someone who can bury that myriad of glaring opportunities.

Finding such a ruthless option in the January market is no small feat, however, with the price tag for a certain Ivan Toney likely to have crept up and up as the Gunners' forward line failed to finish their dinner in that 2-0 defeat to Jurgen Klopp's men.

At present, it is believed that the club's leading target is likely to cost more than £100m if Brentford are to sanction a sale, with Chelsea also said to be in the picture amid their own woes in attack, having seen Nicolas Jackson depart for AFCON.

While it is a big if, if Arsenal can edge out the Blues and seal a deal for Toney this month it could perhaps turn the title tide back in their favour, with Mikel Arteta seemingly able to find the missing piece of the jigsaw that he so desperately craves.

Should a move for the Englishman be wrapped up in the near future, here's a look at how the Gunners could line up following the close of the January window…

1

GK – David Raya

The jury is out on whether Arteta actually needed to upset the apple cart by usurping Aaron Ramsdale's position as first-choice goalkeeper, yet despite Raya having made two errors leading to goals this season in the Premier League, it looks as if Toney's former Bees colleague will continue to feature in the sticks – having started 15 of the last 16 league games.

2

RB – Ben White

Takehiro Tomiyasu may be a worthy rival at right-back, although it is Ben White who remains Arteta's favoured pick in that defensive-minded berth, having missed just one league game all season.

The former Brighton and Hove Albion man is seemingly viewed as a crucial figure by his manager, although needs to improve in an attacking sense, after registering just one goal and one assist in all competitions this term.

3

CB – William Saliba

What is there really to say?

Described as "exceptional" by his manager amid his fine displays over the last 18 months or so, the Frenchman is integral to all that is good about the Gunners at the heart of the backline.

CB – Gabriel

Despite being linked with an exit over the summer, Gabriel has continued to remain the go-to guy alongside the man above, notably getting on the scoresheet in the recent 1-1 draw at Anfield – doing what those in the forward line cannot at present.

5

LB – Jurrien Timber

The sight of Jurrien Timber in training in recent days has sparked hope that a return could be on the cards for the Dutchman, with the summer signing still yet to feature since suffering a cruel ACL blow on his league debut back in August.

His impending availability will certainly offer a real boost amid Oleksandr Zinchenko's recent woes, with the Ukrainian international – who has been described as a "liability" by Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville – having even been ousted by usual centre-back Jakub Kiwior of late.

6

CDM – Thomas Partey

Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey.

As Arteta has himself admitted, the loss of both Timber and Thomas Partey to injury has been a "huge blow" to the Gunners' season, hence the lift that the Ghanaian could provide amid reports that he is nearing a return.

Having the Atletico Madrid man back in the fold could offer some great stability at the base of the midfield, thus allowing Declan Rice to push into a more advanced number eight berth alongside him.

7

CM – Declan Rice

While the Kai Havertz experiment has shown signs of life in recent weeks and months – the German now having four league goals to his name this season – it would be wise to return to a more conventional midfield unit, with Rice taking on the Granit Xhaka role on the left-hand side.

Although not typically deployed as an eight during his time at West Ham United, the England star has that knack for being able to surge forward from deep effectively – notably ranking in the top 20% among his European peers for progressive carries per 90 – with that trait able to be utilised far more frequently in a more attacking berth.

8

CM – Martin Odegaard

Martin Odegaard

That tactical switch could then free up Martin Odegaard to run riot in the final third, with the majestic skipper having scored just four goals and provided only four assists this term in the league, after previously racking up 23 goal involvements in the top-flight in 2022/23.

9

RW – Bukayo Saka

It may pain Arsenal supporters to admit, yet Bakayo Saka has been as culpable as any of his teammates of late, having scored just one goal in his last six league outings – that solitary strike coming in the recent shock defeat away to Fulham.

That said, at his best the 22-year-old – who bagged 14 goals and 11 assists last term in the league – is a true genius, with the addition of a figure like Toney potentially set to help ease the goalscoring burden on his young shoulders.

10

ST – Ivan Toney

Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

Speaking of the one-time Newcastle United man, Toney has been out of action all season after serving a suspension related to betting charges, yet there is no doubt he'll be raring to go if a move to the Emirates is to occur in the coming weeks.

Having bagged 32 Premier League goals across the previous two seasons – including netting 20 times last term – the 27-year-old could be the 'killer' that is needed, having even been described as a "modern-era Ian Wright" by pundit Jermaine Pennant.

Yes, the Gunners could wait until the summer, but cannot they afford to be patient when the need for a striker is so glaringly obvious?

Trevor Bayliss signs with Sunrisers Hyderabad as head coach

Bayliss’ pedigree as a multiple-title winning coach is unparalleled, and is the reason why more than one IPL franchise was trying to get him on board

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Jul-2019World Cup-winning coach Trevor Bayliss, whose tenure with England comes to an end after the Ashes, will take over as the Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach. This will be Bayliss’ second stint in the IPL, having already coached Kolkata Knight Riders from 2012 to 2015, during which time the franchise won the title twice. It is understood that Sunrisers and Bayliss will work out the tenure of his contract soon. ESPNcricinfo understands the franchise is yet to make a decision on the rest of the support staff, but it will retain the pair of VVS Laxman (mentor) and Muttiah Muralitharan (consultant).Bayliss replaces fellow Australian Tom Moody, who parted ways with Sunrisers after seven seasons. Sunrisers had won the IPL in 2016, and then finished runners-up in the 2018 edition. In 2019, they scraped through to the playoffs but finished fourth eventually.”After very careful consideration, the Sunrisers franchise has decided to take a new direction with the Head Coaching role and will be parting ways with the services of Tom Moody,” Sunrisers said in a statement. The reason Bayliss was preferred for the head coach role was that he is a “proven winner” and an “ideal” person to guide the future of the franchises.According to K Shanmugham, the Sunrisers’ CEO, it was the management’s decision to part ways with Moody. The franchise made it clear Moody was not being snubbed and acknowledged he had made an “enormous impact” in Sunrisers making the IPL playoffs five times in seven seasons. “Tom has been the longest-serving coach in the IPL. He played a big role in the development and success of the franchises. But the management felt it was time to try out someone new,” Shanmugham said.Moody tweeted a message of gratitude to the players, support staff and fans.

Bayliss’ pedigree as a multiple-title winning coach is unparalleled and is the big reason why more than one IPL franchise was trying to get him on board. It is understood Knight Riders, too, had initiated talks with him, as did Rajasthan Royals.Under Bayliss’ watch, England won the 2015 Ashes 3-2, reached the World T20 final in 2016, became No. 1 side in the ODI rankings and won the World Cup at Lord’s last week. Bayliss had also won the Big Bash League with Sydney Sixers in 2011-12 and had also coached Sri Lanka, who reached the 2011 World Cup final during his tenure.
