Man Utd and INEOS may hire "genius" coach to replace Amorim, report claims

Manchester United are already thinking about sacking Ruben Amorim, and a “genius” manager who’s won 11 trophies may be on the list of candidates to replace him, according to a report.

Tottenham defeat adds to Amorim's troubles

It has been far from an ideal first three months at Old Trafford for Amorim, with his side now languishing in 15th place in the Premier League.

A 1-0 defeat away at fellow strugglers Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday has piled even more pressure on the Portuguese coach, who has since expressed just how difficult he has found his time in charge of United, saying: “I have a lot of problems. My job is so hard but I’m here to continue my job to the next week with my beliefs. I will try to do it, I will try to win again,”

Of course, the Red Devils were hardly flying under Erik ten Hag prior to Amorim’s arrival, but it would be fair to say there have been no real signs of improvement, leading to questions about the 40-year-old’s future at Old Trafford.

Man Utd progressing in talks to sign £33m ace who wants Old Trafford move

The summer transfer window is still a few months away from opening but United are looking to wrap up a deal fairly quickly.

According to a report from Spain, INEOS are already thinking about sacking the former Sporting CP boss, with doubts about his long-term project now starting to emerge.

The United ownership are likely to give their current manager until the end of the season, barring anything drastic happening, but they are now starting to evaluate potential alternatives for the summer.

Former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane is named as someone who could be on the list of candidates, with INEOS keen on bringing in a manager capable of returning Man United to Europe’s top table.

Former Real Madrid player and coach ZinedineZidanewith club president Florentino Perez

Zidane has a track record of success

Although United have managed to compete for honours since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, winning the Europa League under Jose Mourinho and the two domestic cups with Ten Hag, replacing their legendary manager has proven to be extremely difficult.

Reports suggest some players are already starting to lose patience with Amorim’s methods, in light of the poor results, so it is no wonder INEOS are starting to assess replacements for the summer.

That said, the players have to take a huge share of the responsibility, given that they have been poor in the Premier League for quite some time now, with the FA Cup triumph last season arguably papering over the cracks of a eighth-place finish.

Zidane has a proven history of success at a top club, winning 11 trophies during his time with Real Madrid, while he has also been dubbed a “tactical genius” by Steve McManaman.

However, the truth is this Man United squad needs a major overhaul if they are going to return to being the dominant force they once were, regardless of which manager is in the dugout.

Smith 'a good guy caught in a bad place' – du Plessis

South Africa’s captain has expressed sympathy for Steven Smith, but was less charitable to David Warner, whom he hoped would ‘reflect and see if he can change the way he has played the game’

Firdose Moonda in Johannesburg29-Mar-2018From a “real, deep, place” in his heart, Faf du Plessis has sent his former opposite number Steven Smith a sympathetic text message following the ball-tampering saga that saw Smith reduced to tears on his arrival in Sydney.”I feel for the guy,” du Plessis said, on the eve of the fourth Test in Johannesburg. “You don’t want to see guys going through that and it’s going to be incredibly hard for him over the next days. I just sent him a message of support saying that he’ll get through this, he must just be strong. He appreciated the message. There is a lot of respect between the two of us. He’s a good leader for Australia.”After all the bad blood that has tainted this series, it feels momentous that someone has been able to find and utter the word “respect”. Du Plessis went even further. He offered Smith “compassion”, admitted to being in the same position (literally, as du Plessis has been found guilty of ball tampering twice) and suggested it is already time for Smith start picking up the pieces and for the public to allow him to rebuild his reputation.”I do feel sorry for Steve and I do have a compassion for what he is going through. I think he is one of the good guys and he’s just been caught in a bad place. He’s obviously taken responsibility for that,” du Plessis said. “We’re not sitting in a glass house where we think we are better than them in that aspect. It’s a mistake that was made and I feel that, it’s easier said than done, but they can move on now. You don’t want to see any cricketer or person go through that amount of pain. I feel for what he’s going through as a captain.”Like Smith, du Plessis knows the responsibility that comes with leading a team and believes one of Smith’s regrets will be that the chance to create a legacy under his own name has been squandered. “I know as a leader he would have tried to have his identity put into the Australian team and perhaps now that that chance has been taken away from him, that’s not nice,” du Plessis said. “To be a captain of your country is a huge honour and you can see the disappointment. I feel really sorry for him.”Asked whether the one-year ban, which includes a ban from the IPL, 100 hours of voluntary service, and an order to play grade cricket, is too harsh, du Plessis replied in the affirmative, though he accepted that the seriousness with which Australians regard their cricket provides some context about the severity of the sanction. “I think, yes, I think so, but I understand the context of it now,” du Plessis said. “Perhaps I didn’t understand how important it is to them, but you can really see how much it means to the Australian public. You can understand why they think they need to be so harsh.”Du Plessis and team-mate Vernon Philander would not have dreamt of a similar punishment being lumped on them when they were found guilty of the same offence. In fact, the opposite happened. Cricket South Africa came out in support of its players with team manager Mohammed Moosajee saying it was “harsh” to call du Plessis rubbing the ball on his zipper in the UAE ball-tampering. The management also tried to suppress footage of Philander’s incident and CSA mounted a staunch defence of du Plessis during the Mintgate scandal in Australia in November 2016. Now, du Plessis suspects punishments will be harsher, especially after the ICC has also opted to review its code.”From where I’m sitting, I think it (Smith’s sanction) is harsh if you go back into the history where certain players have been in similar situations. The positive from that is that this is making even the ICC realise that they (Cricket Australia) are going harsher than them so maybe they need to sharpen up. If you do intend to do something illegal with the ball, you don’t just walk away from it with three demerit points and a 75% fine,” du Plessis said, referring to the penalty handed down to Cameron Bancroft.Though that may mean du Plessis would also not get away as much as he has, he welcomed the ICC’s review, reminding that it was something he has called for during Mintgate, when CSA wanted a clearer definition of what constitutes a foreign substance being applied to the ball. “I think it’s overdue. I remember in Australia two years ago with Mintgate and there was no clarity as players. We don’t know what is allowed and what is not allowed. Once you have those grey areas I think a lot of things will happen that perhaps shouldn’t happen. Perhaps something like this is the good that can come from that … you can be a lot clearer and players can have a good understanding,” du Plessis said. “Also the penalties and you get the same penalties for different things. It’s good that they are thinking that way.”Getty Images

And if the ICC is reading, du Plessis does not think sledging should be banned from the game because he thinks it is minimally made use of, and equally minimally effective. “I don’t think that sledging has had that much influence on the way people play. I think it’s something in the past that people maybe thought had a huge impact,” he said. “Maybe there are one or two guys that still feel a bit more pressure when they feel there is a bit of verbal on the field. For me, it motivates me when I hear people say things on the field. Generally in cricket over the past two years I haven’t felt like that boundary has been pushed a lot with playing different teams.”Australia, of course, have been the exception. “As I said at the beginning of the series, we were expecting that from Australia and that’s the way they play. I’m not saying that’s right or wrong,” du Plessis said. After talk of team introspection and cultural change, du Plessis suspects that will change but he hopes the Australian team will retain some of its character nonetheless. “I don’t think every team in the world should play exactly the same way. It’s just been the Australian way,” he said. “But what we have spoken about this series is that line has been crossed too many times.”With sympathy for Smith and, to a less-talked-about degree, Bancroft and understanding for the Australian position, the only thing that remained was to ask du Plessis whether he felt any of the same goodwill for David Warner. As diplomatically as possible, du Plessis, like so many others, indicated that Warner would be more harshly judged, because of his past behaviour and the way he has acted in this series.Warner sparked the original series of sideshows during the first Test in Durban, when his two-hours of chatter at Quinton de Kock resulted in de Kock answering back and led to the stairwell saga from which the rest of the bad temper has flowed. Though the way Warner and particularly his wife Candice were treated by South African crowds was nothing short of shameful, Warner will find it difficult to find emphatic ears in most circles.”As a captain, the conversation between myself and Steve is on a different level. I don’t know Dave that well. This series has been fiery and he has been in the middle of it,” du Plessis said. “It’s interesting to see his thoughts. It might be a nice opportunity for him to see if he can reflect and see if he can change the way he has played the game.”

Liverpool eye move to sign "world-class" attacker to replace Mohamed Salah

Liverpool may be quietly planning for life without Mohamed Salah eventually, and his potential successor has been linked with a move to Anfield.

Will Mohamed Salah leave Liverpool?

There was concern during the latter part of the summer transfer window that Salah could depart the Reds after six legendary years at the club. There was strong interest from Saudi Arabia, with Al-Ittihad having a £150m rejected, but eventually, he stayed put on Merseyside for the time being.

It wouldn't be remotely surprising if that interest returned once January rolls around, however, or next summer at the very least, and there is always the threat that the 31-year-old's head could be turned by a move. In 2024, he will only have one year left on his current deal, so Liverpool and owners FSG could even see it at the last good opportunity to receive huge money for arguably their most prized asset.

If Salah does move on next summer, it is clear that the Reds will need to sign a new attacker in his place, and while it could be impossible to find someone with such relentless numbers in the final third, they cannot afford to bring in an individual who is incapable of at least partly filling the void.

A new update suggests that FSG and Jurgen Klopp have already found one potential option as the Egyptian's eventual successor on Merseyside, as they plan for the future.

Juventus forward Federico Chiesa.

Do Liverpool want to sign Federico Chiesa?

According to a report from Spain, Liverpool are interested in signing Juventus winger Federico Chiesa, as the club eye up "top-level replacements" for Salah. His current club could be happy to sell him, in order to boost their financial issues and build towards the future, which could make the transfer easier to go through.

The 25-year-old is described as a "coveted" player in the transfer market, with a number of top clubs seemingly keen on acquiring his services in the near future, and with his contract also expiring in 2025, next summer is a logical time to sell him.

Chiesa could be a brilliant signing by Liverpool, having arguably been one of Europe's most dangerous and direct wide players in recent times, catching the eye greatly for Italy at Euro 2020, when he tasted glory in the competition after victory over England in the final at Wembley in 2021.

Granted, he isn't as prolific as Salah, but a tally of 59 goal contributions (34 goals and 25 assists) in 153 appearances for Juventus still represents a good return in a tough league, as does a total of 80 overall in Serie A, coming in 206 matches.

There are slight question marks about Chiesa's injury record, which is a possible drawback – again, this is an area of Salah's game that is hugely underrated, with his fitness and availability about as good as anyone in the Premier League – but if Klopp sees him as the man to replace Salah, he could be worth taking a punt on, having been hailed as "world-class" by former Italy international Alessandro Pierini in the past.

“On The FA’s radar” – Reporter shares update on Howe’s Newcastle future

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has been at the club for almost two years, but a reliable journalist has shared an update on his future due to him being monitored for another job away from St. James' Park.

How have Newcastle started the season?

In the Premier League, the northeast outfit have had a mixed start to the new campaign where having won two and lost three of their opening five matches, they find themselves 12th in the top-flight table having taken six points from a possible 15.

At St. James’ Park, Howe was appointed back in November 2021 and the positive change that he’s made to the spirit around the building both on and off the pitch are clear to see, but following an underwhelming opening this term compared to the last, questions have been asked as to whether he is still the right man for the job.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the 45-year-old is currently not under immediate pressure with the owners fully supportive of his position and there isn’t any concrete update at this stage that would suggest they are thinking of relieving him of his duties.

Is Eddie Howe leaving Newcastle?

Writing in his column for CaughtOffside, however, CBS reporter Ben Jacobs named Howe as a candidate who is currently being considered by The FA for the England job should Gareth Southgate decided to step down from his position next year. He said:

"Southgate won’t be sacked. That’s not an option being considered, and rightly so in my view. It’s just a case of whether he stands down after Euro 2024. His contract expires in 2024 as it stands. The FA are already considering options.

“Graham Potter will definitely be a candidate. He was the leading choice for the next England manager prior to joining Chelsea. But the way he handled that (albeit difficult) job may have given The FA a few doubts.

“Eddie Howe is another name on The FA’s radar. I just don’t see Howe wanting to leave Newcastle, though, next year if everything goes according to plan this season.

"And Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is an interesting one to watch. The FA would love to have him. If Manchester City again dominate, could Pep be tempted by a fresh challenge?"

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

What is Eddie Howe's record at Newcastle?

Since joining Newcastle, Howe has taken charge of 80 games, during which he’s secured 40 wins, 20 draws and the same number of defeats, whilst averaging 1.75 points per match, via Transfermarkt, so it’s vital that the board do everything they can to retain his services.

The Wasserman client, who has a preferred formation of a 4-3-3, has also received the Premier League’s Manager of the Month award on two occasions whilst in the dugout in the northeast, and the individual recognition he's getting for his work on the sidelines is what he deserves.

The Amersham-born coach, of course, has additionally led the side back to the Champions League for the first time in 20 years and they did extremely well to secure an opening 0-0 draw against AC Milan at the San Siro on Tuesday night, so Howe being dismissed or leaving for England duty would really be a shock.

India's umpires to receive higher match fees than domestic players

The top 20 umpires in India will earn INR 40,000 for a day’s work. A domestic player receives INR 35,000 per day but they, unlike match officials, are also awarded a share of the BCCI’s profits

The top 20 umpires in India will earn more money for a day’s work than domestic cricketers according to a revised pay structure that was approved by the BCCI’s Committee of Administrators in April. The board’s cricket operations manager Saba Karim had recommended that their per-day match fees be increased from INR 20,000 to INR 40,000 for all matches apart from T20s. A domestic player receives INR 35,000 per day but, unlike match officials, they are also awarded a share of the BCCI’s profits.A few months ago the BCCI had revised the match fee for the domestic players. Previously they received INR 10,000 per day but the CoA approved a hike to INR 35,000 per day.The money paid to domestic players is in the form of two components: the match fee and a percentage of gross revenue from the media rights income the BCCI earns annually from the home season. The match fee is not standard and depends on the media rights income. The BCCI allots 13% of the media rights income to domestic players and junior cricketers. Domestic players get 10.40% and the rest goes to the junior cricketers.A senior BCCI official indicated that the domestic players stand to earn more overall than match officials considering they also get a component of the gross revenue. “Last year (2016-17) the BCCI had allocated close to INR 120 crore from the gross revenue to all Indian players – both international and domestic – in all categories,” the official said. “Now this year (2017-18) if the gross revenue goes up their match fee will once again grow and that would easily work out to more than INR 35,000 per day.”

It was suggested that remuneration of at least those selectors who are continuing to render services may be increased and made effective from 1st October 2017.”

I fail to understand that how can match fee of umpires be more than players?”In 2017-18, the top 20 umpires were active in a total of 281 matches involving the senior men’s teams while the remaining 85 officiated in 809 games including women’s and men’s junior tournaments. There was good news for State Associations with the BCCI reintroducing a prize for the best pitches in Ranji Trophy cricket. They had shelved this scheme in 2016-17, since the matches were played in neutral venues, but with the home-and-away system back in action in 2017-18, the CoA approved payment of INR 10 lakh to five venues: Punjab (North Zone) Karnataka (South Zone), Bengal (East Zone), Mumbai (West Zone) and Chhattisgarh (Central Zone). Additionally, the salaries of the five zonal curators will be doubled from INR 6 lakh per year to INR 12 lakh. Assistant curators received the same treatment, their pay increasing from INR 4.2 lakh to INR 8.4 lakh.

Aston Villa: Emery has Villa Park’s next big thing in 20 y/o ‘little Jamie Vardy’

Since taking over in October of last year, Aston Villa's Unai Emery has made his stance on young players clear.

A month after arrival back in the Premier League, the Basque manager was markedly positive as he stated: "Here we have a very good academy and good young players. Of course, my point of view about this club is to improve with experienced players and with good players and with young players as well."

Recently, Aston Villa have seen homegrown talents hit the mainstream consciousness with the likes of Jacob Ramsey and Carney Chukwumeka's remarkable development, and it seems that the Bodymoor Training Ground has steadily crafted another player destined for great things. Another such asset is Louie Barry.

Who is Louie Barry?

Barry turned heads from the start. You've maybe heard of the Sutton Coldfield native after he built up a reputation in youth football. After he won the Golden Boot as England U16 trumped the Val-de-Marne tournament, Barry dramatically switched West Brom's academy for Barcelona in 2019.

The forward's ten years at West Brom ended in coveted fashion, as Blaugrana representatives recognised Barry as "one of the best young players in English football". The striker's La Masia education only lasted a year but clubs were ready to snap up his signature on his return to home shores and in January 2020, he joined Aston Villa.

After steady progress in the ranks, and similarly to the aforementioned Ramsey, Barry popped onto the scene again in 2021. While Villa's side set to face Liverpool in the FA Cup Third Round had been pulverised by COVID-19, instead of forfeiting, the Villans opted to give the youth a go.

Well, despite a 4-1 defeat to the rampant Reds, the home side's second-string still pulled out a remarkable performance. Barry stole the limelight with a goal that made it 1-1 before Liverpool duly reacted.

Barry

While his mark in the game had been void by first-team strength opposition, Barry's run in behind and consummate slot past Caiomhin Kelleher had reasserted his quality in the face of any previous doubters on his return to England.

What is Louie Barry's style of play?

The goal against Liverpool wasn't an odd occurrence. For Villa's Premier League 2 outfit that season, the 5 foot 9 youngster had notched a ridiculous 13 goals in 17 games.

It became clear that the striker possesses a brilliant pace and guile when in behind and at times he was mistaken for a winger despite being apt in that position.

Aston Villa, the villans, villa park, AVFC, AVFC news Premier League, Wes Edens, Christian Purslow, Johan Lange, Nassef Sawiris, Steven Gerrard, Aston Villa news, Aston Villa update, Aston Villa transfer news, January transfer window, Louie Barry,

After several mixed loans, Barry has shown that he can be used in tireless pressing systems as he has this boundless engine. That latter notion has played a part in current loan success at Dave Challinor's Stockport County in League Two.

A side ranked fifth in terms of data-based 'intensity' last term, Challinor's side have developed a formula that hints at beating last season's fourth-place finish – a spot they sit at now, just 11 games in.

Perhaps their missing piece was Villa's man, as now, employed up top with (the also-prolific) Isaac Olaofe in a 4-3-1-2; the 20-year-old has scored an emphatic seven goals in just 12 games. Part of a pacey, deadly duo that are highly complimentary of each other (as well as the system they play in) – it's no wonder that Barry has been compared to that of Jamie Vardy.

Speaking after that aforementioned FA Cup tie, Jurgen Klopp stated: "Little Jamie Vardy was a proper threat."

What might the future hold for Louie Barry?

Barry's development still has a way to go, when you reflect that he's just 20. However, with League Two seemingly already at his mercy, his ascent could rise up – similarly to another 20-year-old from around Birmingham.

Come to mention of it, both Jude Bellingham and Barry have stints in Spain on their resumes, and they've turned out for one of the two main Brum clubs. It's a tantalising prospect – will they collide on a dramatic collision course at the top? Or will they combine for England? I'm getting ahead of myself.

ryan-gravenberch-jude-bellingham-manchester-united-transfer-premier-league

That said though, with the young man's progress so far – it's no doubt that playing in such a physical league will do him no end of good.

Perhaps the next step up would be a Championship loan. Or, going back to that Emery quote that kicked us off – and like Ramsey, a chance in the first team could come his way. Alas, it's a long old season.

It's definitely worth checking back on Barry at the end of the 46 games this term to see just how many goals he might score.

Spurs: £34m flop was tipped for the Ballon d’Or before signing, now he’s ‘useless’

Tottenham Hotspur have taken no time at all to adjust to life under Ange Postecoglou, as he further endeared himself to his new fanbase with a battling display away to their arch-rivals.

Twice coming from behind, the Lilywhites ensured their unbeaten record in the Premier League was extended to six games with the well-earned 2-2 draw, leaving them fourth in the table.

It is a start that has completely defied expectations, with many rushing to laud the Australian's work in turning around a sinking ship and injecting some much-needed positivity back into the outfit.

James Maddison, one of his star signings from the summer, sought to outline exactly how they have changed for the better since his arrival: "We’re not in there celebrating a point, I think there was a few little moments at the end especially in the dying minutes where we could have maybe won it from a set-piece.

Tottenham Hotspur manager AngePostecogloureacts after the match

"I think winning late last week and coming back twice (here), when you hear fans and neutrals talk about Tottenham they often say, ‘soft, weak, they’ll bottle it, Spursy’, all that rubbish. I think the last couple of weeks shows that we might be going in a slightly different direction. Here we go behind twice at arguably one of the best teams in the world, we pull it back and we’re still fighting right until the end. Hopefully we can continue that.”

However, one thing which Postecoglou is still yet to engineer is Richarlison's return to form, although there have been brief moments that suggest the Brazilian could soon be the next to feel the benefits of this newfound positivity.

How much did Spurs pay for Richarlison?

With Antonio Conte having masterminded their push into Champions League spots, it was only right that Daniel Levy wholeheartedly backed his experienced manager with sufficient funds to take them to the next level.

So, with the additions of Cristian Romero, Yves Bissouma and the Brazilian, they had the perfect spine for a new-look side with the added steel to rid Spurs of that aforementioned mentality.

Disappointingly, only the former of that trio would enjoy a fine debut year, despite the latter having been brought in for a mouth-watering £60m fee from Everton.

The 26-year-old joined fresh from helping the Toffees survive the drop, with his ten goals and five assists for the relegation-threatened outfit a remarkable return given the lack of quality that supported him.

Richarlison

However, Richarlison would fail to translate that form to north London, scoring just a single league goal in his debut year, earning ridicule. For someone to cost such a huge fee and underperform so aggressively marked a terrible piece of business, with even more pressure heaped on his shoulders after the exit of Harry Kane last summer.

It seems now the expectation has fallen on him to thrive in the vacant number nine spot, of which natural winger Heung-min Son is currently instead occupying.

With a mixed reception to his initial signing for Spurs, it seemed like the burden of his price tag had always doomed this transfer from the start.

What praise has Richarlison received?

Whilst one pundit sought to laud Conte's signing, another was quick to argue against it.

Richarlison's transfer proved one of the most polarising of the 2022 summer, given just how temperamental his tenure at Goodison Park had been. Despite that, many saw the huge potential that lay within him, with Carlo Ancelotti even reportedly claiming he could win the most elite personal accolade.

Richarlison

The 46-cap forward noted in 2020: "Ancelotti himself has already said that I'm among the 10 best strikers he has coached and that's an honour for me. It motivated me a lot, I want to improve even more. He already told me that I'll win the Golden Ball (Ballon d'Or), that I'll win several championships. I'll trust the man's word.

"Now I just need to improve, working hard in training, so I can continue to evolve."

A notion that now seems laughable, former Celtic ace Chris Sutton was also drawn into the excitement, noting: "Richarlison already looks like one of the best buys of the summer."

This would be a suggestion supported by Sky Sports' Alan Smith, who claimed: "It's a great deal for Spurs. Obviously, with Antonio Conte and the strong position he's in having got them qualified for the Champions League, he's an ambitious manager and he would have demanded money to strengthen the squad, and he's clearly got it."

However, the issue was that the manager seemed to massively lose interest throughout the term, even lambasting his summer acquisition, which the former Watford man has since admitted was tough.

Therefore, it was actually former Everton favourite Kevin Campbell who was proven right, as he boldly stated: "Speaking of weird, Richarlison going to Tottenham, I am not having that! I loved Richarlison at Everton, but him going to that lot, I am not having it. I’m with Dan [that Richarlison will flop]. I can’t see him getting in the team, to be honest. I think just because he’s not going to be able to force his way fully into the side, then he’s going to be classed as a flop."

How is Richarlison playing now?

It's fair to say that this start to the season has fared little better than his last, with the £34m-rated workhorse not doing much to dispel former professional footballer Tom Williams' claim that he is "useless".

After all, his one goal and one assist triumphantly came off the bench to turn the Sheffield United game on its head, but before that, he had started their opening four fixtures and remained toothless.

Given the lofty heights Ancelotti expected him to reach, it is fair to say that his current predicament is far from that level.

Although, Postecoglou seemingly remains confident that Richarlison can soon reignite a stuttering career, as he noted in pre-season: "He works hard for the team and a lot of what he does, does not get seen. His pressing, his runs. Sometimes he does not get the ball but he is always making those runs and he is a constant nuisance for defenders. I have said before that I really like Richy".

Should he regain that feel-good factor and positive relationship with the manager, perhaps at last the Brazilian could set about realising that Ballon d'Or goal that once brought such ridicule.

Rangers: Gers hold talks with "successful" Lampard alternative

Rangers have held talks with a "successful" Frank Lampard alternative in Glasgow this week, as the search for Michael Beale's replacement intensifies.

Who could replace Michael Beale at Rangers?

After a poor start to the Scottish Premiership campaign, one which has seen the squad booed off on multiple occasions, Rangers made a big decision to relieve Beale of his duties after just 10 months in charge following the previous sacking of Giovanni van Bronckhorst. The Glasgow giants are seven points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic already, with their title hopes in some doubt as a result. Beale was brought in from QPR to succeed Giovanni van Bronckhorst midway through last term, but it's now back to the drawing board for Rangers as they scour the market for another new manager in the space of a year.

Former Rangers boss Michael Beale.

Losing three out of a possible seven games was, quite frankly, unacceptable for one of Scotland's biggest clubs, and their Europa League group campaign took a bit of knock following their 2-1 loss to Cypriot first division side Aris Limassol in midweek. There have been many names mentioned by sections of the media as candidates to replace Beale, with reports suggesting Rangers have been considering the likes of Frank Lampard, Oliver Glasner and Kevin Muscat for the manager's job.

Initial talks were apparently held with Lampard over the vacant Rangers role, but reliable media sources have claimed that he is now out of the running to succeed Beale at Ibrox. However, the likes of Muscat and former AS Monaco boss Philippe Clement could still be hired by Rangers.

Will Rangers appoint Philippe Clement?

The latter coach, who has been praised for some of his successes in past seasons, has won four Belgian league titles across spells at Club Brugge and Genk. Clement would come as quite the decorated appointment, at least from Belgium, with Monaco sporting director Paul Mitchell once calling him "one of the most prominent and successful coaches in Europe in recent years."

"His profile as a modern coach, with his teams playing with great intensity and [is] daring, including on the continental stage," claimed Mitchell.

"His ability to combine titles and the development of young players have made him one of the most prominent and successful coaches in Europe in recent years."

A report from Voetbal Nieuws has shared an update on the prospect of his hire at Rangers, with Clement travelling to Glasgow this week for a meeting with Gers chiefs. The 49-year-old is apparently seen as a "great candidate" for the job, with both Clement and Rangers putting forward their visions for success during this apparent sit-down. However, it is by no means a done deal just yet, as clubs from Saudi Arabia are also after Clement. While the coach will have to convince Rangers he is the right man, Voetbal Nieuws claims the feeling is mutual on Clement's side.

If Rangers were to decide he is the top target, you can fully understand why.
