West Indies seek revival at result-inducing Sabina Park

Big Picture

West Indies last beat India in Test cricket in 2002, at Sabina Park in Jamaica. They have had three close Tests since. Two of these three Tests were played in Jamaica. It is the venue that gives them the best chance to compete with India. In the last three Tests between the two sides in Kingston, only once did a team go past 300 and only one of the three Tests entered the fifth day, that too to complete formalities of three remaining wickets. Eighteen years and 15 Tests have gone since a Test was drawn of its own volition in Jamaica.Sabina Park’s bowler-friendly pitch bridges the gap between the hosts’ attack and India’s; it also draws them out of their bunkers. On both of India’s last visits to the West Indies, only Sabina Park produced a result. The endeavour has been to stay safe at other venues, and then sneak one up on India in Kingston. This year, though, the Test side has slipped so far it registered its biggest home defeat on a fairly good batting surface in the series opener in Antigua. The plan was from the template: a track with no terrors, a side stacked up with batsmen, go to Jamaica 0-0 and then see how India fare against the seaming ball. It’s a sound plan against a better team, but the problem with defensive cricket is that you have to play it excellently for long periods of time. Neither their batsmen nor their bowlers could do it for nearly long enough; not having a defensive option in Jamaica can only do them good now.India’s batsmen came through way better when they were stalled through defensive lines in Antigua. This will be a different test. While not a scary proposition, West Indies have reinforced their attack, adding Under-19 sensation Alzarri Joseph to the squad. The pitch looked neon green two mornings before the Test. India won their last two close Tests here thanks to Rahul Dravid masterclasses; if West Indies bowlers turn up, India might need something similar from their batsmen.

In the spotlight

During the Antigua Test, Darren Bravo became only the 24th West Indies batsman to reach 3000 career runs. By the end of this series he will have played 46 Tests. Given Marlon Samuels’ indifferent Test career, Bravo should be considered the batting mainstay of this West Indies side. In the Antigua defeat, he happened to play two irresponsible shots: laze angled-bat pushes to short-of-a-length balls well away from his body. West Indies need much better from him.If it is going to be a green seamer at Sabina park, it might just be time to dial Ajinkya Rahane, who has been scoring tough runs for India through his career. He was one of India’s two specialist batsmen to fall to legbreak long hops in Antigua. There might not be room for such concentration breaks in Jamaica, especially if he is India’s last specialist batsman again.

Team news

Even if West Indies had managed to draw Antigua through defensive tactics, it was always expected they would strengthen their attack, which had only two specialist bowlers in Antigua. That the ploy failed has only reinforced the need for a change in strategy. Either Miguel Cummins, who was in the squad for the first Test, or Joseph, or both, should make it to the XI. Carlos Brathwaite or Jermaine Blackwood or both could sit out. Brathwaite, though, bowled with discipline and scored a valiant half-century in the second innings.West Indies (probable): 1 Kraigg Brathwaite, 2 Rajendra Chandrika, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Marlon Samuels, 5 Roston Chase, 6 Jermaine Blackwood/Leon Johnson/Carlos Brathwaite, 7 Shane Dowrich (wk), 8 Jason Holder (capt.), 9 Shannon Gabriel, 10 Miguel Cummins/Alzarri Joseph, 11 Devendra BishooM Vijay has been ruled out with the thumb injury he sustained when he was dismissed on the first morning of the first Test. He played no further part in the match. KL Rahul will slot into the XI in his place. A testing-looking pitch may have sown thoughts of playing an extra batsman at No. 6, but Virat Kohli indicated India would continue with their five-bowler strategy, and said a second spinner may still be required for India to take ten wickets in the second innings.India(probable): 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 KL Rahul, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Virat Kohli (capt.), 5 Ajinkya Rahane, 6 R Ashwin, 7 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 8 Amit Mishra, 9 Ishant Sharma, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Umesh Yadav

Pitch and conditions

The pitch had a healthy covering of grass on the eve of the Test match, and Virat Kohli welcomed what he referred to as a “result wicket”. While the fast bowlers would normally be expected to do the bulk of the bowling and take the bulk of the wickets, he felt the spinners could also come into play, particularly in the second innings, given the amount of bounce expected. A moderately heavy shower hit Kingston soon after India’s practice session had ended on Friday afternoon. Rain is forecast for all five days of the Test as well.

Stats and trivia

  • Since 2006, Sabina Park has clocked the best numbers for fast bowlers among venues that have hosted at least five Tests: best average (22.12) and best strike rate (48.8). Overall too the bowlers have registered the best average here since 2006: 24.74.
  • Ishant Sharma averages 19.21 in the West Indies. He played a crucial role in India’s win in Kingston last time around, taking six wickets in the match.
  • R Ashwin needs 17 wickets in next three Tests to join Clarrie Grimmett as the fastest man to 200 Test wickets, in 36 matches.

Quotes

“In the last Test we got starts but couldn’t carry on. Both our batsmen and bowlers need to be more consistent.”
“When you win there’s not that much room for change unless the conditions are drastically different, which they are not. There’s pace and bounce here, and I think this will help the spinners in the second innings as well.”

James Sutherland questions CA high performance arm

James Sutherland, the Cricket Australia chief executive, has narrowed his focus on high performance failings as a reason for the national team’s dire recent displays in Asian Test matches

Daniel Brettig31-Aug-2016James Sutherland, the Cricket Australia chief executive, has narrowed his focus on high performance failings as a reason for the national team’s dire recent displays in Asian Test matches, adding scrutiny to the roles of the team performance manager Pat Howard and the selection panel. In response to repeated questioning about Australia’s three-nil hiding at the hands of an unfancied Sri Lanka in their recent Test series – a result that cost Steven Smith’s side their No. 1 ranking in the longest format – Sutherland’s rhetoric has shifted from patience to a more urgent tone. His latest words, on the day CA announced an additional $500,000 in funding for the Growing Cricket for Girls fund, followed a raft of criticism from former players, including the ex-CA Board director Mathew Hayden and the recently retired captain Michael Clarke, about the decision to rest Smith from the latter limited overs portion of the Sri Lanka tour. While Sutherland defended that decision as a matter of necessity, he was more questioning of how Australia’s players did not appear to be adding the requisite adaptability to their games.”Are some of the fundamental things that we are doing to prepare our players to perform well and be highy competitive in subcontinental conditions passing the test?” Sutherland told “I think that’s where the review gets a little bit more meaty and challenging and more fundamental, going right down into questioning our high-performance systems as well.”To be a bonafide international cricketer in this day and age, you need to be able to adapt to conditions in Australia, conditions in England, conditions in the subcontinent … wherever you play,” he said. “And that adaptability is something that needs to be reviewed because some are adapting and some aren’t.”Speaking about the longer term, Sutherland stated that Australian cricket had to reach a point where “in 10 years’ time when we tour India there is a pool of hundreds of players that could be on that tour”. These words will not be lost on Howard, out of contract next year, or the selection chairman Rod Marsh, also with a deal due to expire in 2017. CA recently hired Graham Manou to manage the junior talent pathway. On the subject of Smith, Sutherland described the captain’s imposed rest as a product of the game’s increasingly cluttered schedule. “It’s obviously far more preferable for him to stay and see that through,” he said, “but the nature of international cricket today and the calendar is that at times we need to make decisions that are in the best interests of the individual and the team.”In coming weeks at the next round of ICC meetings, Sutherland will re-embark on a task he has championed for some time – that of changing cricket’s global structures to allow more room between matches, and greater context so each contest has an easily understandable reason for existing, and by extension greater value for fans and broadcasters.

Liverpool Suffer Blow Over "Towering" Free Agent Target

Liverpool have been dealt a blow after learning that Eintracht Frankfurt defender and Reds target Evan Ndicka is closing in on a move to AS Roma, according to reports.

Who is Evan Ndicka?

Ndicka currently plays his football at the Deutsche Bank Park having moved there back in July 2018, and he's since clocked up a total of 180 appearances, but with his contract set to expire at the end of the season and the fact that he's rejected several new offers to extend his stay with Oliver Glasner's side, is expected to become a free agent in the upcoming window.

In the Premier League, the Daily Mirror previously reported that the Reds, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur were all firmly in the race to sign the 23-year-old, with transfer expert Graeme Bailey further revealing that FSG and Jurgen Klopp had contacted his representatives to ask for updates on his situation, but they have since suffered a massive transfer setback.

Who is signing Ndicka?

According to 90min, AS Roma are now "confident" of completing the free signing of Ndicka, despite interest from Liverpool, Spurs and even Manchester City. Barcelona also "showed a willingness" earlier in the year, but they have since "backed away" from a move. The 6 foot 2 colossus is likely "on his way" to Italy to link up with Jose Mourinho's outfit, who are optimistic that they can reach an agreement in the "near future".

Eintracht Frankfurt defender Evan Ndicka.

Liverpool missing out on sealing a free transfer, especially for a centre-back like Ndicka who has been dubbed a “towering” titan by journalist Jacque Talbot, will be a major blow for Klopp, who will know how much of a rock his target can be at the heart of a backline.

The 2021/22 Europa League champion is currently averaging 4.8 clearances and 2.6 aerial wins per league game, via WhoScored, not to mention that he’s won 17 tackles from 24 players challenged since the start of the term, so he would have slotted perfectly into the defence alongside the likes of Virgil Van Dijk with his calm but physical presence.

Whilst the Paris native is strong in the natural aspect of a defender's game, he also likes to get involved at the attacking end of the spectrum having posted 22 goal contributions (12 goals and ten assists) in 180 Frankfurt outings, making him a real threat at both ends of the pitch.

Finally, Ndicka also has the versatility to operate at left-back alongside his usual central role which would have been a great quality for the boss to have at his disposal given his track record with defensive injuries, but he will now have to turn his attention elsewhere over the summer.

Hope replaces Chandrika in West Indies Test squad

West Indies have included Shai Hope, the 22-year-old opening batsman from Barbados, in their squad for the third Test against India, which begins on August 9 in St Lucia. Hope replaces Rajendra Chandrika, who made scores of 16, 31, 5 and 1 in the first two Tests, and saw his Test average drop to 14.00, the worst by any West Indies opener who has played 10 or more innings.Hope, a right-hand batsman who is also capable of keeping wickets, has played six Tests so far, scoring 171 runs at an average of 15.54. He has been in excellent form in recent months, with two hundreds in his last four matches in the WICB Professional Cricket League four-day tournament, and a century for the WICB President’s XI in the Indians’ first warm-up match in St Kitts. The selectors have made no other changes to West Indies’ 14-man squad. India lead the four-Test series 1-0.West Indies squad for third Test: Jason Holder (capt), Kraigg Brathwaite (vice-captain), Devendra Bishoo, Jermaine Blackwood, Carlos Brathwaite, Darren Bravo, Roston Chase, Miguel Cummins, Shane Dowrich, Shannon Gabriel, Shai Hope, Leon Johnson, Alzarri Joseph, Marlon Samuels.

£60k-p/w ‘Liability’ Should Never Play For Leeds Again

It would not be a surprise to see a mass exodus from Elland Road this summer should Leeds United suffer relegation back to the Championship.

The Yorkshire outfit sit 19th in the Premier League heading into the final-day clash with Tottenham Hotspur, where only a win combined with Everton and Leicester City dropping points will be enough to keep Leeds up.

A rebuild will be necessary in the second tier if Leeds are to mount a promotion challenge and that means getting rid of players that haven't shown enough at Elland Road, as well as selling those that clearly don't want to be at the club.

One man who arguably falls into both of those categories is Junior Firpo, as the former Barcelona man has struggled for consistent form throughout his two years at Leeds.

Should Leeds get rid of Firpo this summer?

The Dominican-born defender joined from the Nou Camp outfit in the summer of 2021, with Marcelo Bielsa looking to bolster a squad that had earned a top-half finish in their first season back in the top flight.

However, he would endure a difficult debut season at Elland Road, making 24 appearances in the top flight and averaging a shocking 6.49 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Speaking in an interview with GiveMeSport last summer, the Mirror's David Anderson lamented the 26-year-old's performances in a Leeds shirt.

He said: "All he seems to do is get booked all the time. I think he's up to 10 yellow cards or something. You don't expect that from a player coming from Barcelona; you expect a bit of class, a bit of maturity, a bit of leadership, and he's provided none of that, really.

"I think he's been a big let-down. You're looking around that changing room thinking, 'Who's going to step up and do it for us now?' And you'd be looking at someone like him, but he's just not. In fact, if anything, he's been more of a liability for Leeds."

That trend has sadly continued this season as he has mustered just 18 Premier League appearances with a woeful 6.42 average rating from WhoScored, with one red card and five yellows to his name, which suggests that his erratic defending has cost Leeds on a number of occasions.

Most recently, the £60k-per-week man gave away a penalty against Newcastle United for an inexplicable handball before receiving his marching orders late on, so surely Sam Allardyce won't be trusting him to start again for this weekend's crunch match against Spurs.

Leeds United managerSamAllardyce

Unfortunately for Leeds, Firpo still has two years to run on his contract at Elland Road but was linked with a return to Real Betis in January, so there is certainly scope for him to leave in the summer, especially if Leeds follow up on their interest in free agent Ryan Manning.

Whatever happens this weekend, there will certainly be a number of Leeds fans who will be hoping that his nightmare against Newcastle was the last time Firpo will ever wear the shirt.

Mohammad Ashraful’s ban from professional cricket will be partially lifted on August 13, allowing him to resume playing at the domestic level in Bangladesh. However, the former Bangladesh captain, who has served three years of his suspension for involvement in match-fixing and spot-fixing in the 2013 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), will only be eligible to play international cricket from 2018.Timeline

October 21, 2014: ICC, BCB appeal against Ashraful’s ban reduction, unsuccessfully
August 13, 2016: Ashraful’s ban from domestic cricket ends

*BCB cricket operations chairman Akram Khan later confirmed that Ashraful would not be allowed to play the BPL for another to years. “Ashraful can play domestic cricket but not franchise-based T20 tournament for the next two years,” Akram said.In 2014, Ashraful’s initial eight-year ban was reduced to five years, with two years suspended subject to his participation in a BCB or ICC anti-corruption education and training programme. Accordingly, Ashraful took part in an anti-corruption programme and, during the 2015 BPL, appeared in awareness videos shown to players and officials.A BCB press release in September 2014 had stated that “upon production of a certificate of good conduct from the ICC, he will be eligible to return to cricket on or about August 13, 2016”. Once the ICC issues the certificate, it is understood that Ashraful will be allowed to resume first-class domestic cricket in Bangladesh as well as non-first-class domestic cricket in other ICC members’ jurisdictions from August 13.BCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury said the board was seeking clarification from the ICC on what types of domestic tournaments Ashraful would be eligible to participate in. On whether Ashraful would be able to play franchise-based domestic tournaments in Bangladesh, Chowdhury said, “We have sent a letter to the ICC regarding Ashraful’s issue and we will get to know about the details by Sunday. There are a few aspects which we need to know.”The BPL’s anti-corruption tribunal had, in June 2014, banned Ashraful for eight years and fined him Tk 10 lakh (USD12,500 approx). In September that year, the ban was reduced to five years, with the last two of those years a suspended sentence. The BCB and ICC unsuccessfully appealed against the ban reduction.*1120 GMT August 14, 2016. The story was updated with Akram Khan’s quote.

Spurs Eye Kane Heir In £18m Machine

Tottenham Hotspur could well be set for something of a raid on Feyenoord this summer, amid the club's apparent interest in Mexican marksman, Santiago Gimenez.

What's the latest on Gimenez to Spurs?

While Arne Slot may well have rebuffed interest from Spurs in order to sign a new deal with his Eredivisie club, it seemingly won't stop the north Londoners from targeting his current crop of players.

Following recent reports which claimed that the Lilywhites are interested in playmaker, Orkun Kokcu, 90min are now reporting that the Premier League outfit are also among a host of English clubs who are keen on 22-year-old striker, Gimenez.

The piece notes that Daniel Levy and co are currently monitoring the ten-cap forward ahead of the summer transfer window, although the likes of Aston Villa, Brentford and Brighton and Hove Albion are also said to be in the running for his signature.

Who is Santiago Gimenez?

The highly-coveted starlet is currently enjoying a stunning debut season in the Netherlands, having been a vital part in helping Slot's side to secure title glory.

The former Cruz Azul ace – who made the move to Rotterdam last summer – has seemingly been "on fire" of late, according to talent scout Jacek Kulig, having scored 15 goals in 31 league games, as well as plundering a further five goals in just nine Europa League outings.

Feyenoord's Santiago Gimenez

Valued at a reported fee of just £18m, the goalscoring machine could well follow the aforementioned Slot to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with there a potential for the 6-foot ace to be a dream heir to current Spurs talisman, Harry Kane.

With the latter man the subject of interest from Manchester United amid his expiring contract, there is likely to be a concern as to whether the England skipper will be at the club next season, having yet again led the line superbly this term with a standout tally of 28 league goals.

Trying to fill the void for a player who is now the leading scorer in the club's history is no small feat, although Levy were to turn to an inform marksman, like Gimenez, it could prove an astute move.

As the youngster's goalscoring heroics this season have showcased, he seemingly mirrors Kane in his ability to offer a clinical presence in attack, having also previously chipped in with 21 goals in 105 games during his time in Mexico.

Equally, even if Kane were to stay put it would not be the worst move to bring in a younger asset to act as a quality understudy, helping to ease the reliance on the Three Lions star in the process.

As such, even if Slot isn't the man to replace Antonio Conte in the dugout, Spurs should certainly consider trying to bring Gimenez in.

Man Utd Eye Move For £30m ‘Baller’

While Manchester United bolstered their midfield ranks last summer with the signings of the experienced pairing of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro, the centre of the park looks set to be another priority area for Erik ten Hag ahead of next season.

As per Manchester Evening News, the Dutchman is said to be targeting a 'younger midfielder' in order to freshen up the current ranks, with the likes of Eriksen, Casemiro and Fred all now in their thirties and hardly long-term options.

Amid that search for a more youthful addition, there have been notable links to West Ham United skipper, Declan Rice, with the 24-year-old – who's been described as "world-class" by manager Danny Cowley – seemingly the type of figure who could be a fixture of the Red Devils side for the foreseeable future.

It is then something of a surprise to see the current speculation that United are also said to be keen on signing Croatian star, Mateo Kovacic from rivals Chelsea, with Football Insider recently stating that the Old Trafford outfit are willing to splash out £30m on the wantaway playmaker – who has just a year left to run on his existing deal at Stamford Bridge.

At 29, the former Real Madrid man – who is also reportedly of interest to Manchester City – would appear to be at odds with Ten Hag's desire for a 'younger' acquisition, with it perhaps wise for the top-four hopefuls to think again before sanctioning such a move.

Should Man United sign Kovacic?

The Red Devils should wish to avoid a repeat of the signing of another midfield maestro from the Blues in the form of Nemanja Matic, with the Serbian colossus having been snapped up from west London on a £40m deal back in 2017.

While the one-time Benfica ace arrived at the Theatre of Dreams with a wealth of experience having claimed two Premier League titles during his time with Chelsea, the 6 foot 4 brute's age meant he was never likely to be a long-term solution, having been 28 at the time of his capture.

Although the 48-cap destroyer did make a strong early impression during Jose Mourinho's tenure – having been described as a "genius" by the Portuguese coach – he was unable to maintain that influence during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's time at the helm, notably making just 12 league starts in the 2020/21 campaign.

As it proved, United ultimately took a hefty loss on Matic as he was allowed to leave for nothing last summer after five years at the club, with that again showcasing the perils of signing a player who is potentially past their peak.

Man United's Nemanja Matic

In the case of Kovacic, the one-time Inter Milan man has been lauded as a "baller" – in the words of podcaster Dan McCarthy – after racking up 220 appearances for his current side to date, notably winning the Champions League under Thomas Tuchel in 2020/21.

As for the current campaign, however, the £100k-per-week asset has found life difficult after being restricted to just 17 league starts for the mid-table outfit, providing just one goal and two assists from his number eight role.

Having hardly done much this season to warrant a move to Old Trafford – notably having 'failed to impact the game' against Nottingham Forest last time out, as per football.london's Sam Hill – it could well represent another short-term, transfer gamble for United if they are to push for a move, much like the case of Matic.
