Celtic’s £620k-rated Rock Was Magnificent v Killie

Scottish champions Celtic continued their rampant and relentless surge toward the title with a dominant, 4-1 triumph over relegation strugglers Kilmarnock on Sunday afternoon, with Ange Postecoglou's Bhoys romping to victory following a remarkable opening blitz at Rugby Park.

While aided by some frankly comical defending from the hosts, the Parkhead outfit found themselves with a four-goal lead before even reaching the half-hour mark, having also spurned the chance to bolster that lead even further as top scorer Kyogo Furuhashi struck the post from the spot.

Although the Hoops could not go on to really rub salt in the wounds as Derek McInnes' men stood firm after the break, the damage had been well and truly done in the opening exchanges, with midfield maestro Matt O'Riley pulling the strings in the centre of the park.

The former MK Dons man was "so dominant" at both ends of the pitch – according to journalist Josh Bunting – having showcased his attacking prowess after scoring twice and registering four key passes in his 68-minute outing, while the 22-year-old also won five ground duels to illustrate his ability to do the hard yards defensively.

That "immense" performance from the Denmark U21 international, in the words of Glasgow World's Lewis Anderson, ultimately earned the silky ace a standout match rating of 9.5, as per Sofascore, as he seemingly looked back to his best after a 'quiet' display against Rangers last week, according to Football Scotland's Mark Hendry.

For all the brilliance of the £12k-per-week magician, however, it was perhaps the performance of defender Yuki Kobayashi that particularly caught the eye, with the January arrival certainly making the most of what was just his second Scottish Premiership start for the Bhoys.

How did Kobayashi perform against Forest?

It has been a rather muted start to life in Glasgow for young Kobayashi, with the 22-year-old having now made just four appearances in all competitions in his new home, after arriving from J-League side Vissel Kobe in the winter.

Having been unable to dislodge the starting, centre-back pairing of Carl Starfelt and Cameron Carter-Vickers in recent months, the absence of the latter man yesterday provided an opportune time to impress, as the United States international was left out due to concerns over the artificial pitch.

While chances have been few and far between for Kobayashi to date under Postecoglou, the £620k-rated Japanese rock certainly stepped up to the mark against Killie, having been 'composed in everything he did', according to Celtic Way's Tony Haggerty.

Celtic's Yuki Kobayashi

As journalist Stuart Hodge noted, both the defender and compatriot Tomoki Iwata were "magnificent" with regard to their passing, with the younger man notably completing 121 of his 130 passes on the day, losing possession just nine times from his 138 touches.

The 6 foot 1 ace showed himself to be a truly 'comfortable and elegant defender' – as per Haggerty – as he completed all seven of his long balls as a marker of his ability to play out from the back, while also winning eight of his 14 total duels to illustrate his defensive dominance.

That strong showing – which earned the left-footer a solid 7.5 match rating, as per Sofascore – earned notable praise from Postecoglou who suggested that the recent addition has "hardly put a foot wrong" to date, while also hinting that Kobayashi could be ready to challenge the likes of Starfelt and Carter-Vickers moving forward.

On the evidence of yesterday's display, that latter duo best beware…

Everton’s £70k-p/w Liability Saw His Value Plummet At Goodison

Everton, few would argue, are one of the worst ran clubs in the Premier League. Since Farhad Moshiri's acquisition, a club that was upheld for many years by David Moyes has slowly regressed amidst increased investment, as managers and players alike have rinsed the club and left for nothing.

This marked a stark alteration from the years preceding the Iranian's arrival alongside Bill Kenwright, where they would instead forge top assets only to sell as soon as the price became tempting.

One statement that the Chairman once made still brings frustration to Evertonians to this day, given their trophy drought and subsequent failures, as the 77-year-old smugly claimed: "One very famous football club said to me two or three days ago 'whenever we have a problem we say 'what would the Everton board do because they always get it right?'"

What would Everton do? Well, languishing outside of the relegation zone on goal difference, as the only team not to make a signing in January despite the £45m sale of their star academy graduate, it is a question that still needs to be answered.

Tracing back through the depressing archives, numerous failed transfers crop up with each season that passed by. However, perhaps one of the most surprising failures was the £11m acquisition of Ashley Williams, who promised solidity but delivered anonymity.

How much did Ashley Williams' value drop?

Such a low fee for such an experienced player made this deal seemingly foolproof, but the former Swansea City centre-back would not translate his prior qualities into Merseyside. This made his £70k-per-week deal all the more costly.

Just 73 appearances for the Toffees led to his eventual exit in 2019 on a free, having been challenged from all directions for his poor displays.

Journalist Ben Marlow even claimed that he: "Thought he would be great for us but turned out to be a total liability. Awful defender".

Despite that, and the consensus of the fanbase likely supporting that view, Sofascore suggested that his time in Royal Blue was not as woeful as it might have seemed.

ashley-williams-everton-lyon-fight

The 38-year-old's debut campaign at Goodison Park saw him record an average Sofascore rating of 7.13, upheld by a mammoth 7.9 clearances per game. However, that would drop dramatically in the season after, where a 6.84 rating was more appropriate.

What exacerbates the steady decline of the defender more than anything is the drop in valuation. From his initial £11m transfer fee, this would plummet by a depressing 84% to only €2m (£1.7m) just two years later, as per Transfermarkt, before the Wales international would depart for nothing.

Many have signed for Everton in recent years for big money, and with big reputations, yet very few have lived up to their promises. Williams in particular boasted the latter, which made his lack of impact and rapid decline particularly frustrating for Moshiri.

West Ham’s "Isolated" £15m Star Was Poor vs Southampton

West Ham United secured a crucial victory over Southampton yesterday to edge further away from the Premier League relegation zone, and it will hopefully inject some spark into David Moyes’ side.

This was the club’s first league win since the end of February, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. The Irons struggled to retain possession during the tie, but they managed more shots than the Saints with Nayef Aguerd ultimately scoring a header during the first half which proved to be more than enough to secure all three points.

Moyes will have been happy to see players such as Lucas Paqueta and Said Benerahma getting back into some sort of form, with the duo receiving ratings of 7/10 and 7.3/10 via Sofascore for their displays, although there were still a couple of bad performances.

Tomas Soucek endured a disappointing match, taking just 33 touches and completing only 11 of his 21 attempted passes. Indeed, he was somewhat of a passenger in the West Ham midfield that sought to establish a foothold in the match.

As Football.London's Jonty Colman noted, he was 'sloppy at times' in possession, a notion backed up by the fact that the Czech lost possession on 15 occasions throughout the clash. Also poor from a physical standpoint, he won just six of his 19 defensive duels.

That said, Moyes may well be disappointed at another one of his players for their abject display – Danny Ings.

How did Danny Ings perform against Southampton?

Ings’ 65 minutes on the pitch were extremely underwhelming, and it’s no wonder he was brought off for Michail Antonio.

The striker made just seven passes at a success rate of 47%, 15 fewer than goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, as he failed to link up well with his teammates.

What was even more damning is that the ex-England international took no shots at all during the match.

Danny Ings for West Ham

West Ham correspondent for the Athletic, Roshane Thomas believes Ings doesn’t quite fit into Moyes’ tactical plan, saying: “I don't think this system works for Danny Ings. He's often too isolated up front. Hasn't quite clicked barring his two goals against Nottingham Forest. Antonio has great work rate so he has no issues playing as a lone striker. But Ings has struggled in that role.”

Taking just 25 touches in a game – 18 fewer than Fabianski – is often a sign that a player is isolated and Ings didn’t quite receive the service he required to make a meaningful difference.

Moyes signed the Englishman to score goals and a tie against his former employers in Southampton should have been the perfect opportunity for him to add another couple to his tally for the club.

If it wasn’t for Ageurd’s winner, the Hammers may well have dropped more vital points and with Ings responsible for scoring the goals to maintain the club’s league status, he has only heaped further pressure on Moyes.

Crystal Palace Injury Update Emerges On £130k-p/w Talisman

Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha will have a “key scan” today on the injury he sustained during the Premier League game vs Leicester City, according to journalist Sami Mokbel.

What's the latest on Zaha's injury?

The Eagles hosted the Foxes at Selhurst Park on Saturday where they collected all three points thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Jean-Philippe Mateta, securing the 2-1 victory and effectively putting the final nail in the coffin for Brendan Rodgers who the day after got the sack at the King Power.

The Ivory Coast international was handed the captain’s armband by Roy Hodgson for his first game back in charge but the afternoon didn’t go as he would have hoped when he sustained a suspected groin injury, and after receiving treatment from the medical staff, was seen limping off the pitch at the end of the first half.

The SE25 winger was later in attendance that same night ringside at Anthony Joshua’s boxing match at the O2 Arena which initially alleviated worries that the problem could have been serious, though a proper update on his situation has now emerged.

Taking to Twitter on Sunday evening, Mokbel revealed that Zaha is set to undergo further tests to discover the extent of his injury at Palace today. He wrote:

“Wilfried Zaha will have [a] key scan on the groin injury he suffered against Leicester on Monday. Fact he was mobile enough to go to the boxing last night is seen as a positive but there remains concern heading into tomorrow’s tests.”

Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha.

Would Palace losing Zaha be a blow?

Zaha has been dubbed “unplayable” by talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino and it would be a massive blow for Palace should he be ruled out for any games between now and the end of the season.

The £130k-p/w talisman has netted six goals and provided three assists across all competitions this season, via Transfermarkt, whilst averaging 2.4 shots and 1.9 dribbles per game, noting his desire to consistently get forward and make the magic happen in the final third (WhoScored). The Abidjan native also allows Hodgson to be more flexible in his team selection having operated on the left side of the midfield and at centre-forward alongside his natural left wing position this season so is a wonderful player for the boss to have at his disposal.

The Eagles will be hoping to have Zaha back as soon as possible because he is, for sure, one of the key players that will have a significant bearing on whether they manage to retain their top-flight status or end up getting relegated to the Championship.

Predicted Arsenal XI & team news vs Southampton

Arsenal return to Premier League action tonight, as they host Southampton in what is a must-win clash; although, with just seven games left as they battle for the title, every game has taken on such importance.

That is what makes their recent slips against West Ham United and Liverpool all the more frustrating, especially given they squandered leads in both.

Tonight, however, they face a wholly different challenge, as they welcome the 20th-placed team in the division with the hopes they can use it as a return to form. With a trip to face Manchester City on the horizon, tonight marks a fine opportunity to bolster confidence in preparation for such a monumental game.

However, they are to once again be without William Saliba, as Mikel Arteta admitted:

"He’s not progressing as quickly as we hoped and it is a bit delicate so we want to be certain that when we push him, he’s ready to absorb the load and the risk that we’ll take, and that’s not possible at the moment."

Whilst Oleksandr Zinchenko is at a more advanced stage in his recovery, a start tonight also seems unlikely given the risk it would pose in a fixture they should be able to win without. However, his absence could pose an interesting opportunity for a tactical shift.

How could Arsenal line up against Southampton

Arteta could make as many as three changes to the side that drew 2-2 at the London Stadium, with alterations made both due to necessity and with one eye on Wednesday's crunch match.

Aaron Ramsdale will be seeking to put aside his disappointment from last week with a fine showing tonight, but will have to remain sharp when his moment comes. The 24-year-old made just one save last game, yet shipped two goals.

The back four is expected to remain largely unchanged, but after his struggles to perform in the inverted full-back role, Kieran Tierney could drop out. Given Granit Xhaka deputised in his position after his substitution last time out, perhaps Arsenal could seek to add such a fine creative presence to the defence given their expected dominance of the ball.

Ben White will occupy the opposite flank, whilst Rob Holding and Gabriel Magalhaes retain their spots through the middle.

Seeing the Swiss general move into the back four opens up an opportunity for Fabio Vieira to take his chance beside Thomas Partey. They will offer a defensive foil to supplement the creativity of captain Martin Odegaard.

arsenal-west-ham-united-odegaard-goal

As mentioned, their dominance in tonight's clash should see them through without needing a full-strength side, especially when the likes of Leandro Trossard and Emile Smith-Rowe are the alternatives to replace Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli.

Seeking to keep the star men fresh, so they can truly wreak havoc next week, perhaps handing the 22-year-old his first league start of the season following a return from injury could be the injection of enthusiasm needed to put this game to bed early.

The Belgian's inclusion needs no explanation, with the £40k-per-week maestro having already garnered praise despite only joining in January. Journalist Richie Mills, who reports on Brighton and Hove Albion, will know more than most just what a "magic man" the 28-year-old can be.

These two will flank Gabriel Jesus, who has made a seamless return to first-team action after his own lengthy lay-off, scoring four in his last three.

Predicted Arsenal XI (4-3-3): Ramsdale; White, Gabriel, Holding, Xhaka; Vieira, Odegaard, Partey; Smith-Rowe, Jesus, Trossard.

Journalist Criticises "Very Poor" Chelsea Man Sterling

Chelsea forward Raheem Sterling has been "very poor" of late and supporters are losing patience, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

Is Sterling having a good season for Chelsea?

The 28-year-old traded Manchester City for the Blues last summer, coming in as a big-money addition who would hopefully hit the ground running. It has been a grim season at Stamford Bridge, however, with Chelsea sitting 11th in the Premier League, and Sterling's campaign has got worse as the campaign has gone on.

He has scored just four goals and registered two assists in the league, which is a poor return over 22 appearances, and he hasn't found the net in the competition since New Year's Day. While he can't be solely blamed for the various struggles on show currently, he could be offering a lot more quality and consistency.

Some recent reports have even suggested that Sterling could leave Chelsea at the end of the season, departing west London after just one year at the club.

Could forward leave this summer?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Phillips didn't hold back in his criticism of Sterling, with far more required from the England international:

"He's been poor, very poor. There are no two ways about it. Chelsea fans are getting very frustrated with his performances. When he came in at the start, I will give him credit as he did look good and not many people really complained about the signing at the time.

"For £45 million, it wasn't bad business. An England international, very experienced player, who was coming in from Man City. Obviously, he's been there and he's done it, so bringing a player like that into the squad, it didn't really get frowned upon.

"But right now, Chelsea fans have lost their patience with Sterling."

There is no doubt that Sterling has ultimately been an underwhelming signing to date, considering what a strong career he has had, scoring 131 goals for City and bring a key man for several years, as well as netting 20 times in 82 caps for England.

The hope is that his struggles are in tandem with that of Chelsea's as a team, so selling him soon wouldn't make sense, given his pedigree as a footballer, being hailed as "frightening" by Tony Cascarino last year.

Sterling has to do better between now and the end of this campaign, though, starting against Real Madrid on Tuesday night, when he could win round the doubters if he inspires the Blues to a Champions League comeback.

Newcastle Receive Approach For £132k-p/w Trippier Successor

Newcastle United have received an approach regarding the summer availability of Bayern Munich defender Noussair Mazraoui, according to reports.

What's the latest on Mazraoui's future?

The Morocco international first arrived at the Allianz Arena in July 2022 on a free transfer from Ajax, but his debut season in Germany hasn’t gone as well as he would have no doubt hoped upon putting pen to paper.

The Bavarians star has been significantly out of favour having made just six starts in the Bundesliga this season, and has so far only recorded one outing under Thomas Tuchel since he was appointed following the departure of Julian Nagelsmann. Despite his contract not expiring for another three years, he could therefore already be considering a move elsewhere, and should that be the case, he won’t be short of any potential suitors in the Premier League.

The Magpies are long-term admirers of the 25-year-old having been initially linked with him two years ago, but bigger clubs were better placed to sign him at the time. Now though, the northeast outfit have been given the perfect opportunity to take a second bite of the cherry and are in a better position to compete with their rivals…

According to 90min, Newcastle, Manchester United, Wolves, Arsenal, West Ham United and Crystal Palace have all been “alerted” to Mazraoui’s availability by his personal representatives. PIF and Eddie Howe are set to be “kept informed” of the right-back’s transfer situation in the weeks and months ahead, but the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid have also been “told” that he could be on the market at the end of the season.

Bayern Munich defenderNoussair Mazraoui.

Where would Mazraoui fit in at Newcastle?

Newcastle will eventually need to recruit for life after Kieran Trippier who isn’t getting any younger (32), and as a full-back who “cannot be defended” when flying forward, according to ESPN analyst Arnold Bruggink, Mazraoui would be the ideal long-term successor.

The Leiderdorp native is strong in defence having won 71 per cent of his tackles this season but is also a threat down the flank having posted 48 goal contributions (26 assists and 22 goals) throughout his career to date.

The £132k-per-week ace, who has the flexibility to operate in a remarkable eight different positions across the field, additionally knows what it takes to be successful having got his hands on seven senior titles since bursting onto the scene, so would enhance the winning mentality of the squad already at St. James’ Park.

Ten Hag Eyeing Man United Move for "World-class" Player

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is thought to be eyeing a move for Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.

What’s the latest on Man United and Mac Allister?

The Red Devils are on the hunt for a midfielder this summer, with a new addition in the middle of the pitch and a forward being their main transfer priorities.

Mac Allister has enjoyed a fine season for club and country, helping Argentina win the World Cup in Qatar last year. The central midfielder, who can also play in attacking or defensive midfield roles, has also been one of the Seagulls’ top performers, as per WhoScored, in their push for a European spot and an FA Cup final.

He has made 28 appearances for Brighton in all competitions, contributing to 12 goals, turning out in more advanced roles since the turn of the year. As a result, the 24-year-old's Transfermarkt valuation has increased from €16m (£14m) to a career-high €42m (£37m) during the campaign, and it looks as if his displays have caught the eye in Manchester.

Journalist Steve Bates shared a column for GiveMeSport in the last 48 hours, claiming Ten Hag held talks with director of football John Murtough, technical director Darren Fletcher and chief executive Richard Arnold during the recent international break, focusing on summer recruits.

He added that Mac Allister is on Ten Hag’s radar, with moves for big-money targets such as Declan Rice or Jude Bellingham potentially dependent on a Qatari takeover.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag

Should Man United sign Mac Allister?

Mac Allister appears to be at the peak of his powers and has been hailed as 'world-class' by members of the media earlier this year. He could be an extremely shrewd signing by United, given his versatility and impressive displays, with Mac Allister leading the way for Brighton when it comes to goals and shots per game. He is also the most fouled Brighton player and also ranks highly when it comes to dribbles per 90. [WhoScored]

Mac Allister has even outperformed every United player when it comes to average Premier League match rating aside from Bruno Fernandes, as per WhoScored, so would offer a solid option in a number of midfield roles.

That could come in extremely handy during Ten Hag’s second season, providing United once again guarantee European football. The Red Devils have found themselves short at times in midfield this season due to injuries to Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay and two separate suspensions for Casemiro, so signing someone like Mac Allister could be a brilliant move, and potentially it is one to keep an eye on.
