Leeds: Huge news on goalkeeper target

Leeds United summer transfer target Rory Mahady has officially confirmed his departure from Celtic in a social media post.

The lowdown

The 16-year-old goalkeeper could possibly be about to join the Leeds youth setup now that he is a free agent.

Last month, the Daily Mail reported in its print edition of The Verdict (22 August, pg. 14, via MOT Leeds News) that Victor Orta and the Whites were in talks over a deal for the Scottish prospect, and his latest step may pave the way for a move to Elland Road.

He’s not only the youngster from north of the border who has been linked with Leeds, either. According to Aberdeen Live, the Whites possess a ‘cast-iron interest’ in 15-year-old Aberdeen striker Lewis Pirie.

The latest

Mahady took to Instagram to reveal that he has ‘officially left Celtic’ after nine years in the academy.

He issued a ‘massive thank you’ to the ‘players and staff’ with whom he had worked and called his time at the Glasgow club a ‘pleasure’.

The verdict

Leeds could be implementing an intelligent recruitment strategy.

As the report from Aberdeen Live explained, it has become more difficult for Premier League clubs to snap up top talent from Europe in the wake of Brexit, so the solution is to look within the United Kingdom for the brightest youth players.

Assuming the club take this opportunity to go after the free agent, Leeds fans should be excited by the prospect of signing Mahady, given that he has won international recognition for Scotland at under-16 and under-17 level.

Furthermore, he has also been pursued by two Champions League clubs in Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, so this may be regarded as a coup for the mid-table Whites if they can fend off those two competitors to land the precocious goalkeeper.

Newcastle missed out on Maitland-Niles

Newcastle United were reportedly interested in signing Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Arsenal during the summer transfer window and it could have been a repeat of the masterclass that saw Joe Willock join the club.

According to the Telegraph, the Arsenal academy graduate was keen to join Newcastle this summer but the Gunners refused and he ended up joining Southampton on a loan deal instead.

While it is in some ways a positive that Arsenal are now considering the Toon as a genuine Premier League rival, Eddie Howe will no doubt be disappointed to miss out on such a versatile player.

The Englishman has featured regularly at full-back and in central-midfield during his time at Arsenal, making 132 senior appearances, and in loan spells at West Brom and Roma, so could have been a solid addition to Howe’s squad.

Although he has lost his way at Arsenal in recent years, Mikel Arteta was still full of praise for the youngster last season, saying:

“He has a huge talent because he’s versatile enough to adapt to almost any position on the pitch.”

He especially would have been useful as cover following the recent injuries to Emil Krafth and Bruno Guimaraes, which have left the Toon a little short on squad depth, but unfortunately, he is now lining up for another Premier League side instead.

Had the £35k-per-week earner made the switch to St James’ Park, he could have followed in the footsteps of former teammate Willock, who initially joined the Toon on loan from Arsenal in 2021, before making his move permanent that summer after hitting a remarkable eight goals in just 14 appearances.

He has remained a regular with the Magpies ever since, with 52 Newcastle appearances under his belt, and at just 23 years old, he looks likely to be a key part of Howe’s revolution at the club.

Maitland-Niles is also a young Arsenal academy graduate who is keen for regular football and had he been allowed to join Howe’s side, there is no reason why he couldn’t have had a similar impact to Willock in Howe’s side, so the manager will surely be gutted to have missed out on him.

Journalist hails 20y/o Celtic starlet

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has heaped praise on 20-year-old Celtic starlet Liel Abada, as per GiveMeSport.

The Lowdown: Great start to the season

The Israel international has enjoyed a fantastic start in the Premiership this season, having bagged six goals in the Hoops’ opening six league fixtures, although he was withdrawn 57 minutes into today’s 2-0 defeat at St Mirren, having failed to land a shot on target.

The winger, who arrived from Maccabi Petah Tikva in 2021 for €4m (£3.5m), has also played twice in the Champions League this autumn, including 45 minutes in the Hoops’ unlucky 3-0 defeat to Real Madrid.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments

O’Rourke believes that continued regular game-time and exposure to Europe’s elite club competition will allow Abada to keep flourishing at Parkhead.

Speaking with GiveMeSport, the journalist claimed: “I think Liel Abada could become a real top player in the future if he continues his rapid rise.

“And Celtic fans will be hoping that will continue at Celtic Park as well because he’s only going to get better and better, I think, in my opinion, especially if he’s playing at the highest level in the Champions League; it’ll only improve his game.”

The Verdict: Huge talent

After heavily contributing to Celtic’s electric start to the new campaign, Abada has averaged an incredible 7.53 Sofascore rating, seeing him rank as the Hoops’ third-best player so far this season.

He has averaged 1.9 shots and 0.9 key passes per game in the Premiership, having also put up fantastic numbers in front of goal (via WhoScored).

Earlier this year, The Athletic’s Kieran Devlin hailed the youngster, having claimed that the 20-year-old’s transformation since last year’s winter break has been ‘astonishing’, duly making him ‘undroppable’ for Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou.

Therefore, with a busy schedule ahead for the Hoops, Abada can expect to receive plenty of game-time – both domestically and in Europe – this season.

Spurs: Paratici now plotting Palhinha offer

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to bring Joao Palhinha to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer transfer window.

What’s the word?

That’s according to a report by Portuguese publication Jornal de Noticias (via Sport Witness), who claim that, following earlier reports suggesting that Tottenham are at the front of the queue to land the Sporting Lisbon talent this summer, Fabio Paratici is now preparing an initial offer for the 26-year-old.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

The report goes on to state that Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester United are also interested in a move to bring the Portugal international to the Premier League, while the Liga Portugal side themselves are looking to receive a figure totalling €40m (£34m) in order to part with the defensive midfielder this summer.

A “special” signing

With it being reported that Antonio Conte has prioritised the signing of a new central midfielder in the summer transfer window, it is easy to see why Paratici is plotting an offer for Palhinha ahead of Tottenham’s 2022/23 campaign.

Indeed, over his 26 Liga Portugal appearances this season, the £23.4m-rated talent has been in breathtaking form in the heart of Ruben Amorim’s midfield, making an average of 3.0 tackles, 1.0 interceptions, 0.9 clearances and winning 7.1 duels – at a success rate of 61% – per game.

The £24k-per-week defensively-minded midfielder has also impressed in an attacking capacity, scoring three goals and creating one big chance for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.0 shots, making 0.4 key passes and completing 0.5 dribbles per fixture.

These returns have seen the 12-time capped international who Amorim dubbed a “special player” average an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.11, ranking him as Sporting’s ninth-best performer in the top flight of Portuguese football.

As such, with the likes of Harry Winks, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele all looking likely to be moved on by Tottenham this summer, Palhinha would very much appear to be a fantastic replacement for any of the three outbound midfielders, leading us to believe that Paratici must do all he can to convince the 26-year-old of a move to north London ahead of a switch to Wolves or Manchester United this summer.

Rangers: Predicted Light Blues XI today

Rangers play their final match of the 2021/22 Premiership campaign today as they travel away from Ibrox at lunchtime.

The Gers watched on as their arch-rivals celebrated winning the league title in midweek, and that may put the fire in the belly to end the season on a high with an emphatic win.

Gio van Bronckhorst’s men come into today’s match off the back of a 4-1 win at home to Ross County and they will be looking to continue building positive momentum ahead of the Europa League final next week.

How many changes will the Dutchman make to the team from Wednesday? Here is our predicted XI to take on Hearts…

We are predicting that he will make four alterations to the side which started against Ross County, with Leon Balogun, Scott Arfield, Aaron Ramsey, Fashion Sakala all coming in.

The top-flight campaign has virtually finished for the Gers as they are guaranteed to finish second in the table irrespective of what happens today. This means that Van Bronckhorst can make changes to his team and use this match as another opportunity to spread minutes around the squad to keep as many players as fresh as possible for the clash with Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville next Wednesday.

At the back, Balogun may come in for Borna Barisic. This would allow Calvin Bassey to play at left-back and also give the ex-Wigan centre-back some valuable minutes ahead of the Europa League final.

In midfield, Arfield could replace Alex Lowry. The experienced Canada international has played 11 times in the Europa League this season, which suggests that Van Bronckhorst will want to get him some minutes in the tank in case he is called upon next Wednesday.

Ramsey is another Gers player in need of game-time. The Welshman – who Martin Keown previously dubbed an “outstanding technician” – was an unused substitute in midweek, so it could be time for him to come in for a start today to boost his match fitness.

Finally, Joe Aribo may be axed after he failed to score or set up a goal in the 4-1 win over Ross County despite playing at centre-forward. Ezri Konsa once described the Nigerian’s style as “languid” and we are predicting that Sakala will get the nod in Aribo’s place to showcase his energetic play at the top of the pitch.

Blackburn: Alan Nixon makes Lenihan claim

Reputable journalist Alan Nixon has dropped a claim involving Blackburn Rovers defender Darragh Lenihan.

The lowdown: Lenihan at Blackburn

Signed from Belvedere FC in the Republic of Ireland in 2011, Lenihan has come through the youth ranks at Ewood Park and has amassed 252 senior appearances for the club.

Out of contract in the coming weeks (Transfermarkt), the 28-year-old has previously been linked with a sensational move to the Premier League, with as many as five clubs believed to be taking an interest in him.

As the end of the 2021/22 English campaign closes in, it appears that the Irishman’s future in Lancashire remains in serious doubt…

The latest: Nixon drops Lenihan transfer claim

Taking to Twitter in response to a Blackburn supporter questioning whether a new deal could be forthcoming for the twice-capped ace, Nixon was quick to suggest that prospective suitors could come again.

He succinctly stated that there is “a lot of interest in Lenihan …”.

The verdict: Huge loss

Already set to lose manager Tony Mowbray, the sight of club captain and talisman Lenihan also moving on to pastures new would be a significant blow to Blackburn supporters.

During the season, the ‘man mountain’ (as Mowbray called him following a resounding 4-0 victory over Birmingham) scored three times and provided one assist in 41 Championship outings.

Overall, the Dublin-born centre-back earned an impressive 7.11 Sofascore rating in the league, making 1.5 interceptions, completing 4.1 clearances and winning eight duels on average per game.

If the mooted interest turns into something more tangible and a player of such importance leaves Rovers for free, it would be an undoubted loss to the squad, and whoever replaces Mowbray in the Ewood Park hot seat may have a tough task finding a reliable replacement for Lenihan.

Rangers plot move for English defender

Rangers are plotting a summer bid for an English defender as Giovanni van Bronckhorst looks set to bolster his squad at Ibrox.

What’s the news?

That’s according to TEAMtalk, who understands that the Light Blues are keen on a deal for Cameron Humphreys.

The 23-year-old is now a free agent following his decision to leave Belgian club Zulte Waregem, although the Gers could face a battle over his signature, with English Championship sides Sheffield United and Middlesborough, along with newly-promoted Bournemouth, all ready to make a move for the player.

Humphreys was at Premier League champions Manchester City as a youngster, making two appearances for the club in the FA Cup.

Humphreys in, Bassey out?

Van Bronckhorst has had a good start to life as Rangers manager, securing the club’s first Scottish Cup in 13 years last week and leading them into the Europa League final, their first on the continent since 2008.

He will be under no illusions that the squad needs strengthening over the summer, though, with a few first-team players uncertain of their futures.

Given Aston Villa’s strong interest in Calvin Bassey, Humphreys could be the ideal replacement for the 22-year-old, who may well be tempted by a move to the Premier League and a reunion with Steven Gerrard.

The English centre-back was previously described as a “leader” by his former coach Simon Davies, and at 23 years of age, there is plenty of time to continue his development at the Ibrox side.

Losing Bassey would be a big blow to Rangers, especially after his performances this season. The 22-year-old has slotted into the centre of defence to partner Connor Goldson with ease, whilst also deputising for Borna Barisic at left-back when required.

Although Humphreys is a right-footed centre back, this is an area in which the Gers need reinforcements, especially when the futures of Goldson and Leon Balogun at Ibrox are uncertain.

Humphreys would be a great signing, and he still has plenty of years left to get even better.

Tottenham: Weston McKennie could cost £34m

Tottenham Hotspur will have to spend €40m (£34m) to sign transfer target Weston McKennie.

That’s according to Italian outlet Calciomercato (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare and Jack Pitt-Brooke wrote at the weekend that Antonio Conte and Spurs were hoping to strengthen in central midfield this summer. The north Londoners signed Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus in the winter but could do further business with the Bianconeri ahead of the expected departure of Harry Winks.

It was only last summer that Juve officially signed McKennie from Schalke for £18.45m after an initial loan. He is predominantly a central midfielder but has played in a vast array of positions, including both deeper and more advanced roles in the middle and on the right wing.

It’s worth noting that the American was missing from late February until the end of the season with a metatarsal fracture.

The latest

McKennie could move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer, with Spurs scouring the Italian market once again.

As per Calciomercato (via Sport Witness), managing director of football Fabio Paratici ‘particularly likes’ the 23-year-old and could push for a move.

Juventus are reportedly demanding £34m for his services, and it’s unclear yet as to whether Spurs will be willing to pay that amount.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-developments-2/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The verdict

McKennie isn’t necessarily someone who will come up with big numbers of goals and assists, having only notched three direct goal contributions in 2021/22.

However, he does take up advanced positions, ranking in the 98th percentile among his positional peers in Europe’s big five leagues for both progressive passes received and touches in the penalty area.

McKennie, who won his country’s Player of the Year award in 2020, was starting to ‘come alive after a stuttering spell’ prior to his injury, in the words of sports journalist Josh Bunting.

Squawka have described him as a ‘wizard’ at his best, and Paratici clearly has confidence that the 23-year-old can reach that level consistently.

After doing business with Juventus for Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski, perhaps it’s time for the Spurs supremo to once again tap into that existing relationship with the Serie A club.
