Finn shows promise but Notts shade the day

Steven Finn showed glimpses of form with four wickets but Middlesex will still reflect that an inability to build pressure meant that Nottinghamshire held thre advantage after the first day at Lord’s

Steven Finn showed glimpses of better days ahead with four wickets but Middlesex’ will reflect that a general inability to sustain pressure allowed Lord’s first day of the Championship season to get away from them.Nottinghamshire will also rue the fact that four batsmen got starts – three registering fifties – and nothing more, as the sun eventually baked a flat Lord’s deck to what for April at least was close to batting perfection. It was only when Peter Siddle strode out to the crease in the early evening that you realised just how balmy conditions were for batsmen. Capable with the bat and aided by a small boundary away to the Grandstand, Siddle timed the second new ball through cover, point, midwicket and over square leg, into the upper tier, for a 35-ball 40 that took Notts past 300. He was seeing it like a banana. It was a far cry from Steven Mullaney’s battling yet valuable effort at the start, in which he toughed out early movement and enforced toil for almost four hours.Re-engineered more times than the Batman franchise, Mullaney, in his current guise as opener, withstood fits of pressure and a painful rap on the gloves, before reaching 40 in 163 balls. The additional runs for the half-century took just six, featuring a towering six down the ground off Ollie Rayner. But, a ball after acknowledging his achievement, he was off, nicking Steven Finn to Dawid Malan at second slip. After missing last week’s opening victory against Lancashire with a side strain, Taylor came into the Nottinghamshire line up in place of Alex Hales, who consoled himself with a hit on the Nursery Ground in the afternoon session.Taylor started sluggishly; not so much with his scoring rate – nearly a run a ball going into the lunch break – but with his execution of shots. A couple of loose drives to Gareth Berg and some indecision outside off stump suggested a degree of ring rust. But he shook himself out of his stupor thanks to a thumping pull shot off Steven Finn, which had bat-pad and square-leg motionless but fearing for their safety all the same, and some loose bowling from James Harris.Taylor was more composed after the interval, enjoying most of his success against Harris, whose efforts with ball would not even merit a spot on the fridge. But as he skipped past fifty with some nicely timed strokes off Berg, Harris, desperate to vindicate the decision to select him ahead of Toby Roland-Jones, had pinned down Mullaney at the other end, for two consecutive maidens.Reunited in the 48th over, Harris struck first ball to see off Taylor lbw, despite the batsman’s belief that he had got bat on the ball. At stumps, he reserved ire for himself rather than the umpire: “There was definitely a hundred there for the taking. Obviously I would have liked a hundred but at the end of the day I scored valuable runs for the team – it’s frustrating that I didn’t get a hundred. Never mind, it happens.”Three balls later, Harris picked up the valuable wicket of Samit Patel for a duck. It was then the turn of Rikki Wessels to saunter to his fifty, after some watchful play between himself and skipper Chris Read. Their partnership of 86 did enough to ensure that Notts would finish the day at least on par with Middlesex, only for Siddle to hand them the spoils. That they are not further ahead owes much to Steven Finn, who was the pick of the bowlers today for both speed and intent. As a collective, Middlesex’s bowling was erratic, but Finn was an aggressive presence throughout, taking responsibility as enforcer to hold an attacking line in a bid to unease settled batsmen.Mullaney, Wessels and Siddle wore, if not ducked and dove under a handful of bouncers, before Finn, who did not start the day with the new ball, used the second to topple Read’s off stump, with a hint of movement, and draw Wessels into a prod to Ollie Rayner at first slip. The sun is expected to shine as uninhibitedly on day two as it has on day one, allowing Middlesex the perfect opportunity to atone for their failings at Hove last week.

'Yuvraj will be match-winner in World Cup 2015' – Murali

A round-up of IPL news on May 13, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff14-May-2014

Muttiah Muralitharan: ‘India should look after Yuvi because I feel he will play a big role in the 2015 World Cup’•BCCI

Muttiah Muralitharan feels his Royal Challengers Bangalore team-mate, Yuvraj Singh, has a lot left in him. Following Yuvraj’s knocks of 83 off 38 and 68 not out off 29 in the IPL, Murali said India “should look after Yuvraj” because of what he could do for them in next year’s World Cup. Following his stymieing 11 off 21 in the World T20 final, Yuvraj was under considerable pressure, Murali said, and hence his form dropped.”I have been talking to Yuvi a lot,” Murali told the IPL website. “He is a great limited-overs player, but his confidence was low. After the World Twenty20, the whole country put a lot of pressure on him. I know the situation well as I played for 20 years at the highest level. I knew it was just a matter of helping him regain his confidence. I was sure once he did that, he would be a different player.”After the way he has performed in the last two games, it seems I was right. I honestly think Yuvi has still got it and India should look after him because I feel he will play a big role in the 2015 World Cup. He will be India’s match-winner there.”Ranchi crowd misbehaves
The Chennai Super Kings v Rajasthan Royals game in Ranchi on Tuesday ended on a sour note, when some spectators hurled water pouches onto the ground just after Super Kings’ MS Dhoni hit the winning runs. The cheerleaders on the boundary, subsequently, had to take cover inside the stadium, reported, and more water missiles were thrown when a second batch of cheerleaders came out to lead the post-match celebrations.’T20 suits spinners best’ – Yuvraj
The impact the spinners – legspinners in particular – have had on this IPL is clear for all to see. Yuvraj Singh, in his column in the , said the spinners had become “vital cogs” in their teams, and the format seemed best suited for them to thrive.”No T20 team can be imagined without a quality spinner. Sunil Narine, Harbhajan Singh and R Ashwin are vital cogs in the wheel of their teams. They are the ones who can attack with the new ball and defend with the old one,” Yuvraj wrote. “Even the domestic bowlers, Praveen Tambe, Akshar Patel, Rahul Tewatia and our own Yuzvendra Chahal have done very well for their teams.”If you ask me, this format suits them the most. Spinners thrive on the mistakes of the batsmen. Their job is to disguise and bluff the batsman. They work on the patience of the batsmen and constantly probe to induce an error. And in this format, batsmen are always under pressure and prone to make mistakes. They don’t have much time to settle, get the feel of the pitch, before going for the runs. And that’s where spinners make the impact.”Sammy confident of Sunrisers making playoffs
With four wins from nine games, Sunrisers Hyderabad sit in the crowded middle section of the points table. Which way their campaign will go from here, is left to be seen. Allrounder Darren Sammy, though, is pretty confident the team will enjoy success. In the lead up to their match against Kings XI Punjab, he said things were coming together well at the right time for them.”We have not performed at our best but we are peaking at the right time and by the time we qualify for the playoffs, we might be playing the best cricket and we will then eye the next stage,” Sammy said, according to . “We are working well as a unit. The team’s players have gelled well. And hopefully we will only get better as the tournament progresses.”‘I don’t want to bowl at Maxwell now’ – Johnson
Matches: 9; runs: 474; average: 52.66;strike rate:198.32. With IPL numbers like that to his name, there will be few bowlers out there who will volunteer to bowl to Kings XI Punjab’s Glenn Maxwell at the moment. His Australia and Kings XI team-mate, Mitchell Johnson is not putting his hand up either. Speaking on the eve of his team’s match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Johnson joked about being happy to only take on Maxwell in the nets.”I just don’t want to bowl at him now in a match. I would prefer to do that in the nets,” Johnson said. “He is in such terrific form, batting with great confidence and hitting the ball all over the ground. There is lot of pressure on every bowler and it is very difficult to bowl to him. No bowler seems to relish this prospect now. Even I would like only to watch him from the sidelines.”Twenty-yard circle for Twenty20?
Lalit Modi, the – now-banished – brain behind the IPL, has revealed that strategic time-outs and on-field interviews with players aside, he had wanted to introduce other innovations into the IPL, but they were shelved for various reasons. Talking to , after the Indian business magazine named the IPL one of the five best innovations in India this century, Modi said: “We wanted players to wear heart-rate meters that would showcase their heart rate during high-pressure situations, like a tight last-over finish, or while a bowler ran in to bowl, or when a fielder attempted a catch. We thought the heartbeat sound, along with the heart rates on the big screens, would give spectators a unique experience. But some players expressed their reluctance and we respected that.”There were also suggestions in favour of reducing the 30-yard circle to make the game pacier and give batsmen and fielders something else to think about. Eventually, though, that idea was scrapped because I didn’t want to tamper with the fabric of the sport.”

Johan Wessels’s unbeaten half-century guided Assupol TUKS to the final of the Red Bull Campus Cricket World Finals after completing a tense five-wicket win against Rizvi Mumbai at The Oval.Set 123 for victory, Assupol TUKS lost early ground in their chase as their openers Aiden Markram and Gerald Pike both departed inside three overs, leaving the team precariously placed at 9 for 2. Wessels, however, led a recovery by combining with the captain Theunis de Bruyn for a third-wicket association which yielded 54 runs. At 63 for 2, Assupol TUKS were solid, but de Bruyn was bowled by legspinner Sagar Gorivale in the 10th over, and the quick dismissals of Tian Koekemoer and Sean Dickson soon after reduced the team to 90 for 5, and Rizvi Mumbai were right back in it.Wessels and Heinrich Klaasen, however, held their nerve to take the team home. With 13 needed off 12 balls, Klaasen thumped a six over midwicket in the penultimate over to ease the situation, and duly completed the win himself by striking the first ball of the final over for four. Wessels remained unbeaten on 56 with three fours and two sixes, while for Rizvi Mumbai, medium-pacer John Ebrahim was the pick of the bowlers, collecting 2 for 15 in 3.1 overs.Rizvi, choosing to bat, had made 122 for 9 from their 20 overs. The captain Sumit Ghadigaonkar and Rao Manish both scored 34, but none of the other batsmen could make a significant contribution, as incisive bowling from Assupol TUKS, led by Ruben Claassen, kept pegging the team back. Claassen and Corbin Bosch both picked up two wickets, though Claasen was the more economical of the two, ending with figures of 4-1-10-2.Assupol TUKS will face Jamaica ISCA in the final, at the same venue.
