Stuart MacGill threw Australian cricket’s plan for life after Shane Warne into a state of confusion when he retired almost two years earlier than expected, the former national coach Tim Nielsen has said.Nielsen revealed in an interview with ESPNcricinfo that the team expected MacGill to play on until the end of 2009, rather than ending his career in the middle of the 2008 West Indies tour.Such a path would have had MacGill face India, New Zealand, South Africa and then England on the 2009 Ashes tour. Instead, his retirement started a cycle of scatter-shot spin bowling selections that continued unabated for three years, and may only be settling now after Nathan Lyon’s success on his first Test tour in Sri Lanka.Nielsen admitted he was unsure whether in all that time the team and the selectors knew exactly what they were looking for in a spinner.”I just wonder whether we ever clearly understood what role we wanted the spinner to actually play,” Nielsen said. “We came off the Warne era and the MacGill era, MacGill retired in the West Indies in ’08 which was why Beau [Casson] came in to debut.”What really was the issue was we counted on MacGill to play through until the end of 2009 really, and when that changed, it put us under a bit of pressure from a spin bowling stocks point of view, we had young blokes who weren’t quite ready and maybe thrown in the deep end a bit early. At different times there were decisions made that it might actually hurt them more to keep going rather than just yank them out and let them play a bit more Shield cricket.”Having spent most of his career in the shadow of Warne, MacGill became Australia’s No. 1 spinner at the end of 2007 but immediately ran into a range of physical problems, from chronic knee trouble to the damaging emergence of carpal-tunnel syndrome, which robbed him of feeling in his spinning fingers.”MacGill isn’t talked about much but he took 200 Test wickets. By then he was probably older than he needed to be to play every Test match for a couple of years,” Nielsen said. “He’d played a lot of Test cricket by the time he got the opportunity to be the only spinner, he must’ve played 50 Test matches, and he had chronic knees, he’d been around the system for a long time.”What we did do after that was speculate a couple of times, that didn’t quite work out, [Nathan] Hauritz has been pretty good I reckon. Because we’ve had a few spinners in a row it continues to be talked about, and in the background under all that you say is SK Warne. Someone we relied on and loved to have for so long, was no longer there.”It was a hard place to be as a spinner because there was this public expectation of the next Warne and our Test match victories a lot of the time happened with the quicks doing damage in the first part of the game and then Warney cleaning up in the second half. When we didn’t have that sort of option there was pressure put on publicly and I’m sure they felt it themselves, so it wasn’t that easy.”Among the most curious cases in Australia’s spin saga was that of Jason Krejza, dropped only one Test after taking 12 wickets on his debut in India as an aggressive bowler. Nielsen said that looking back, Krejza might easily have been persisted with, though he also highlighted the problem of bowlers learning their trade at Test level because they were not given enough room by their states in first-class cricket.”In hindsight it is easy to say exactly that, we should have stuck with him,” Nielsen said. “The hard part was he was very inexperienced, a bit like us having to pick Hauritz out of the NSW second XI. Everybody yells and screams about the selectors having to pick spinners, well I’d like the states to start picking some spinners as well and sticking with them.”While the selectors can be panned for that, it is bloody hard to go up and learn your caper at the highest level. We need to get these kids in there and give them a run and a chance to get their heads around first-class cricket, and learn. Ideally by the time they get to Test match cricket they’ve been up and down and through the mill a couple of times, and understand how to cope when its not spinning a lot in Perth or its not going that well in Brisbane. They’ve learned by playing there.”

Chris Gayle hopes to make an explosive impression on Zimbabwe’s domestic Twenty20 competition, Stanbic Bank 20 Series, which starts on Friday. Gayle is one of 16 foreign players who will participate in the 10-day tournament and hopes his maiden appearance in the country is one to remember.”It’s my first time in this tournament, so as a player I want to make an impact,” Gayle said in Harare. “I’ve done well around the world and I want to give the spectators something to cheer about.”Gayle is the second West Indian to be signed on for the event after Brian Lara, who played for the Southern Rocks last year. Although his presence was immense, Lara’s performances were not and he managed just 99 runs from three matches. The Jamaican is expected to do better than that when he turns out for the Matabeleland Tuskers, where he will team up with the likes of Charles Coventry. He had been playing limited-overs cricket for Jamaica in the lead-up to the tournament and said he would still like some practice before the first match on Friday.”I’ve stuck to what I’ve done before other tournaments but I need to get more time in the nets,” he said. “Tomorrow [Thursday] will be crucial for me to get some time in the middle.”After an IPL in which he scored 608 runs in 12 matches, including two centuries and three fifties, Gayle’s reputation as the ultimate power-hitter was rubber-stamped. He explained that his sensational form is rooted in cricket’s simple basics, that he continues to apply meticulously. “The key is to get a start. That releases a lot of pressure,” he said. “Having said that, you don’t want to go there and relax too much, it might not work. But, a start for any batsman gives him confidence.”Another player who is attracting attention in the Zimbabwe capital is journeyman left-arm fast bowler Dirk Nannes, who will represent Mountaineers. Nannes has made his name as a Twenty20 nomad and is also playing in Zimbabwe for the first-time. “I am coming here with an open mind because I have never been here before,” he said.Nannes has played in various Twenty20 competitions, such as the IPL, Australia’s Big Bash and England’s Friends Life T20 and said each new event brings its own learning curves. “It’s a challenge walking into a new team environment and playing in these conditions is a challenge,” Nannes said. “Obviously there are no players here that I have played against before, so it will be a challenge to bowl to people who I have never bowled to before, because I don’t know what their strengths are.”Nannes had to withdraw from the IPL when he picked up a side strain but recovered to play for Surrey in the Friends Life T20 and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Champions League. “I am as strong as I’ve ever been,” he said. “I don’t know if I am the fittest in terms of doing laps around the ground because I don’t do a lot of running these days. But I’ve had about six weeks off and I’ve gone back to Australia, worked on bowling fitness, worked on my action a bit and I feel like I’m ready.”Nannes’ Mountaineers will play in the first match of the tournament against the Mid West Rhinos on Friday while Gayle and the Tuskers will take to the field later that afternoon against defending champions, Mashonaland Eagles.

Karachi rout Sheikhupura to win ODTA Final

Karachi City Cricket Association overcame Sheikhupura by a comprehensive margin of 79 runs to win the final of the One-day tournament (Associations), played at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore

Mahmood Ahmad10-Dec-2011Karachi City Cricket Association overcame Sheikhupura by a comprehensive margin of 79 runs to win the final of the One-day tournament (Associations), played at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.Sheikhupura, who went into the final as favourites to lift the trophy after winning all of their 6 matches, including the semi-final against Rawalpindi, went down in the match perhaps a bit to easily, despite Qaiser Abbas’ magnificent effort with the bat. With virtually no help coming from the other end, the left-hander only watched his side failing to reach even 200 runs, after being asked to score 279, with the scoreboard showing 106 not out off 134 balls against his name.It all started when Tanvir Ahmed, the right-arm pace man, bowled Imran Nazir on the very first ball of the innings and his fellow opener Mohammad Javed was caught behind the wicket off Imran Javed in the next over, reducing Sheikhupura to 5 for 2. The rot thus set in reached its climax when they lost the six wickets for 84 in the 19th over.Qaiser, awarded best batsman of the final, added 34 for the 7th wicket with skipper Aaqib Javed and then went on to add another 63 for the 9th wicket with Kashif Raza (24 off 23 balls), an association during which the left-hander reached his hundred off 126 balls.Yet all went in vain as their last man Farrukh Majeed holed out a simple catch to mid on off the bowling of Adnan Malik, with the scoreboard showing 199 runs in the 46th over. Adnan, the left-arm spinner, was declared the best bowler of the final after his figures of 3 for 48.Tanvir Ahmed, Imran Javed and Tabish Nawab also bowled well for their side, getting two wickets each for 23, 46 and 32 respectively. Shahid Afridi got one wicket for 39 in his ten overs.Earlier, Karachi, led by Moin Khan in Shadab Kabir’s absence, won the toss and elected to bat first on a wicket completely devoid of grass. However, Sheikhupura pace attack, led by Aaqib and Kashif Raza bowled brilliantly to reduce them to 12 for 2 by the 5th over, after both Shahid Afridi and Zafar Jadoon threw their wickets away in an attempt to find quick runs.It was at this juncture that Naumanullah (74 off 96) and Saeed Bin Nasir (49 off 79) joined hands to rescue their side from this vulnerable position. They added 99 for the 3rd wicket to provide a firm foundation for the late order to find some quick runs in the end. This task was duly taken over by Moin Khan and Arif Mahmood. These two perfectly made for a somewhat tardy start of the innings by executing lusty hits to all parts of the ground, adding 75 in the last 7 overs of which 49 came off the last three.Moin Khan, who had relied mainly on singles and doubles at the start of his innings, hit 3 fours and 2 sixes to score an unbeaten 67 off 63 balls. Arif, on the other hand, hit five boundaries and a six in his 23-ball innings of 43 not out.For Sheikhupura, Farrukh Majeed bagged two wickets at the cost of 58 runs, whereas Aaqib Javed, Kashif Raza and Faisal Virk got one wicket each.

Doherty helps Hurricanes continue winning streak

The Hobart Hurricanes Twenty20 blueprint, or more accurately purpleprint, has worked again. This time the Adelaide Strikers succumbed to Xavier Doherty’s team by 14 runs

The Hobart Hurricanes Twenty20 blueprint, or more accurately purpleprint, has worked again. This time the Adelaide Strikers succumbed to Xavier Doherty’s team by 14 runs at the Adelaide Oval in front of more than 27,000 patrons. The Hurricanes skipper Doherty was again the chief architect of the win, taking 4 for 17 in a match-winning display of spin bowling. His side have now won three from three and sit atop the BBL table. But the identical nature of the three wins is most intriguing, although tonight’s victory was their toughest yet.For the third consecutive match Doherty won the toss and elected to bat. For the third consecutive time the Hurricanes had eight or more wickets in hand with 10 overs to go, having crawled through the first half of their innings at less than seven runs per over.Yet they were able to post 4 for 171. Again it was Travis Birt who ignited the Hurricanes. In the eleventh over, having faced only two balls after Jonathan Wells fell to Johan Botha at the start of the tenth, Birt launched an assault on Bryce McGain. He clubbed two sixes and one four from the over. McGain had delivered two overs that cost 29.Only 15 runs came from the next three overs however. McGain was held back while Kane Richardson, Aaron O’Brien, and Alfonso Thomas tied Phil Jaques in knots. McGain exacted some revenge when he ended Jaques’ 42-ball stay at the start of the 15th over. Jaques’ 41, which included just two boundaries, left onlookers wondering if the Hurricanes tactics had finally come unstuck.Enter English import Owais Shah. He smashed 36 unbeaten runs from just 18 balls. He and Birt again accelerated the innings at a rapid rate. Birt thumped 44 from 26 including three fours and three sixes. He became Botha’s second scalp in the 18th over, but it did not slow the rate. Shah, in combination with Matt Johnston, orchestrated 66 from the last five overs to push the total to 171.The Strikers bowling group were reasonably impressive. Botha, O’Brien, Thomas and Richardson all conceded eight an over or less. But McGain’s four overs cost 49, which meant the Strikers were chasing a testing target. No side had ever chased more than 170 in a T20 in Adelaide. With the spinners having done well in the Hurricanes’ innings, Doherty and Jason Krejza opened the bowling but conceded 19 in the first two overs to Aiden Blizzard. Doherty then put on a masterclass of T20 bowling. He clean bowled Blizzard in the third over before saving his last two overs for the second half of the innings. In between he mixed and matched his bowlers well. Johnston bowled two overs for just nine. His awkward action, with which he delivers swerving inswingers off the wrong foot, caused significant difficulties for Michael Klinger and Adam Crosthwaite. Krejza returned to dismiss Crosthwaite lbw, while Rana Naved picked up the vital wicket of Callum Ferguson, in the following over, with Rhett Lockyear clutching a sharp chance in the gully.Doherty brought himself back on in the eleventh over to bowl at the key partnership of Klinger and Cameron Borgas. He struck immediately, forcing a miss-hit from his opposing captain, and only conceded three from the over.Klinger’s dismissal left the Strikers needing 99 from 55 balls. Borgas and Tom Cooper were unperturbed by the absurdity of the task. They ramped balls over the keeper’s head, switch-hit boundaries through backward point, and generally caused Hobart headaches in their 62-run partnership. Cooper even hit Rana onto the roof of the Chappell Stands. But Rana removed Borgas later in the 17th over. Tom Triffitt, the wicketkeeper, held his nerve under the towering skier, something Krejza had failed to do the previous delivery, but the game was still alive with the Strikers needing 37 from 18 balls.Ben Laughlin delivered the 18th over that cost just nine and saw Botha being run out. Then Doherty delivered the last rites. He bowled Richardson and O’Brien in consecutive balls to finish with four wickets. After his first over had cost nine, his next three yielded figures of 4 for 8.Cooper was left stranded on 44 having hit five fours along with his enormous six. The Strikers may well lament that he was only able to face 27 deliveries as their chase went awry. The Strikers have now lost two in succession after thumping the Renegades in their opening match.

Após Díaz, Corinthians anuncia a contratação do chileno Ángelo Araos

O Corinthians anunciou o segundo reforço nesta segunda-feira.
