West Ham: Report makes Bernand claim

According to The Daily Mirror, West Ham United have shortlisted a brand new defensive target as news emerges on Manchester United starlet Di’Shon Bernard.

The lowdown: Career so far

A product of the youth academy at Chelsea, Bernard moved to Manchester in 2017 to link up with the Old Trafford Under-18’s side.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Since then the London-born central defender has progressed through the ranks in the North West and made a senior debut for the club in the Europa League in November 2019 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 21-year-old spent the entire 2020/21 campaign on loan at Salford City in League Two and could be set for another move in the upcoming transfer window…

The latest: Moyes is interested

As per the report from the Mirror, the Hammers and by association, manager David Moyes, are ‘plotting a move’ to sign the 6 foot 2 defender.

It’s claimed that the Scot is a ‘big admirer’ of Bernard who is currently on loan at Championship outfit Hull City.

Furthermore, the report states that the east Londoners are confident in their ability to get a deal done due to offering a ‘quicker pathway’ to first-team football for the colossus youngster who was described as ‘quick’ and ‘aggressive’ by Grant McCann.

The verdict: Next generation

Albeit still unproven in the Premier League, Bernard has enjoyed a positive season at Hull City, averaging 6.91 match rating over 2021/2022 whilst making 1.3 interceptions, 3.2 clearances per game and helping to keep eight clean sheets in the league (Sofascore), the talented defender appears to be ready for the next step in a promising career.

As both Craig Dawson and Angelo Ogbonna reach the twilight of their superb individual careers, Moyes will rightfully be thinking about the succession plan.

GSB have already acted to succeed one half of the partnership with the capture of Kurt Zouma and having never truly shown total faith in Issa Diop, it’s no surprise that the Irons’ boss may look elsewhere for reinforcements and Bernard could be the chosen one to bolster the London Stadium ranks.

Sehwag backs Indian youngsters

Seniors in the Indian team continue to back the young batsmen in the side to deliver

India’s misfiring young batsmen are getting plenty of support from their seniors. Two days after captain MS Dhoni said he was not too concerned about the batting collapses in the Dambulla tri-series, Virender Sehwag has also backed his less-experienced team-mates to deliver. The quartet of Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have managed just 94 runs between them through the tournament. But India are still in the final, on the back of two solo efforts from Sehwag which led to two victories.”When I was a youngster, it took me almost 50 to 70 innings to perform consistently, so we have to give more time to youngsters,” Sehwag said. “We are not worried about them too much because in Dambulla, everybody’s not scoring. We have to live with that and give youngsters some confidence and tell them to go out and spend some time at the wicket.”India’s batsmen have kept the opposition wicketkeepers and slip fielders busy, giving up nearly half their wickets to catches in that area. Dhoni had called for his batsmen to be more decisive with their stroke-selection, particularly to balls outside off. However, on Wednesday two of India’s top-order batsmen, Karthik and Kohli, fell wafting at precisely such deliveries.”It’s very easy to say that you should leave the ball or hit it according to its merit but it’s very difficult to react according to the merit of the ball,” Sehwag said. “When we were young, it would have been confusing whether to hit or leave. It used to be tempting to hit and we used to get out in that confusion. It’s important to either leave or play the balls outside off rather than defending them.”Sehwag, the only batsman from any of the three sides to come to terms with the seam and swing in Dambulla, advised caution in the early stages of the innings. India’s scores after 15 overs in their league matches were 54 for 5, 47 for 3, 56 for 3 and 81 for 4.”If you see off the first 10-15 overs, it becomes easier to bat. But those first few overs are difficult to survive,” he said. “If you see off the new ball [even] without scoring much in the first 15 overs, it helps the team a lot.”Saturday’s final could well be the last chance for the likes of Kohli and Rohit to press for a permanent place in the side, as senior batsmen including Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir could return to the one-day team for the home series against Australia in October.

Pujara sets up seven-wicket triumph for India

Cheteshwar Pujara has not been part of India’s rise to the No. 1 Test ranking but he could help determine how long they stay there, after his outstanding 72 on debut set up a seven-wicket win

The Bulletin by Brydon Coverdale13-Oct-2010

Cheteshwar Pujara has not been part of India’s rise to the No. 1 Test ranking but he could help determine how long they stay there, after his outstanding 72 on debut set up a seven-wicket win. Guided in the end by Sachin Tendulkar, the hosts cruised to their target of 207 to confirm the 2-0 series triumph, while Australia slid to fifth of the ICC rankings for the first time, courtesy of another toothless bowling display. When Virender Sehwag fell early in the chase, the match seemed to be heading for similar drama to the final day in Mohali, where the wounded 114-Test veteran VVS Laxman dragged his side over the line. That there was no similarly tense finish was due to the work of Pujara, who was in his first Test but showed the kind of confidence expected from an old hand.Unexpectedly promoted to No. 3 following a first-innings effort that lasted three balls, Pujara betrayed no nerves and drove his third delivery handsomely to the cover boundary off Mitchell Johnson. The introduction of Nathan Hauritz brought out the best in Pujara, who used his feet brilliantly to the spinner and drove him through the gaps in a field that an apoplectic Shane Warne felt the need to tweet about from the opposite hemisphere. There were some strange decisions from Ricky Ponting, not the least of which was the early elimination of all slips fielders for the fast men when Australia needed to put the pressure on India by taking wickets. And after Ben Hilfenhaus had Sehwag caught behind in the third over with a terrific ball that bounced sharply and jagged away, Pujara and M Vijay settled in for a lengthy partnership.Their 72-run stand ended when Vijay was trapped lbw by Shane Watson for 37, the victim of a good delivery that angled in and seamed away. All that did was bring the first-innings double-centurion Tendulkar to the crease, and by the time Hauritz had his revenge on Pujara with a delivery that drifted past the edge and took off stump, India were only 61 runs from their goal.Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, who was demoted to No. 5 to accommodate Pujara, had little trouble completing the task and Tendulkar’s 53 not out – which included the winning runs paddle-swept fine against Hauritz – was a fitting finale to his magical series. The challenge for India’s selectors now is to work out how to reward Pujara, who won his opportunity only because of Laxman’s back injury. It’s a happy problem to have; Australia’s issues are not so pleasant. Apart from losing all the Tests in a series for the first time in nearly 30 years, they will now enter the Ashes on the back of three consecutive defeats, a run that no Australian side has endured since West Indies were at their peak in 1988-89.They have also dropped below England in the Test rankings, which is an abstract concept but one that will frustrate Ponting’s men as they aim to regain the urn. A more concrete measure of the side’s current state could be seen in the disappointing form of several key players. It has been a difficult tour for Hauritz and that continued on the final day, when he was caressed out of the attack by Pujara before wincing at consecutive sixes slog-swept over long-on by Tendulkar. The Ashes will be a different challenge, but England’s batsmen will certainly have taken note of his lack of penetration.Michael Clarke and Michael Hussey have had a tour they’d rather forget, while Marcus North’s ongoing pattern suggests he’ll be due for a century by about the third Ashes Test in Perth. And then there was Johnson, who worked hard at times on the trip but by the last day was sending Tim Paine diving on both sides of the wicket. That Johnson and his fast-bowling colleagues did not trouble the Indians with swing was not exactly surprising, but Zaheer Khan and Sreesanth had proven earlier in the morning that movement was available. They mastered reverse-swing to collect the final three Australian wickets while limiting the tailenders to 21 runs in the morning.Johnson lost his off stump leaving a Zaheer ball that jagged sharply back in, Hilfenhaus was mesmerised by the swing and was bowled for a duck, and Peter George fended a catch behind to end Australia’s innings on 223. The total was always going to be tough to defend, and so it proved. So, India have confirmed their status as No. 1 – not that they were in danger of losing it. Now for Pujara to lock in his place at No. 3.

Spurs: O’Rourke on Reguilon situation

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has provided an update regarding the future of Tottenham Hotspur full-back Sergio Reguilon.

The lowdown: Spanish links

Recently reputable transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claimed Barcelona were among a host of European clubs interested in the 25-year-old, whilst Real Madrid could also trigger a clause involved in the deal that saw the left wing-back move to N17 for £32million in 2020 (Sky Sports).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Meanwhile, Spurs have recently been linked with a number of alternative left-back options including Genoa ace Andrea Cambiaso as Antonio Conte attempts to put his own stamp on the squad in north London.

Now O’Rourke has shed some light on the situation from a Spurs perspective…

The latest: Changes afoot…

Speaking to GiveMeSport, the journalist has stated that Conte and transfer chief Fabio Paratici will be in the market for reinforcements in the position.

He explained: “There’s a real possibility that Reguilon could return to Spain this summer. Real Madrid have a buy-back clause and there’s interest from Barcelona, so I think Conte will be in the market for a left wing-back to try and improve the squad.”

The verdict: Improvement needed

So far this season Reguilon has provided five direct goal contributions from 31 outings across all competitions from a combination of a favoured wing-back role and as a conventional left-back.

Hailed as ‘absolutely pivotal’ to Conte’s plans by pundit Noel Whelan and ‘quality’ following a Man of the Match display against Leeds United earlier this season, the Spanish full-back missed out as 21-year-old Ryan Sessegnon started the goalless draw with Brentford on Saturday.

As the Italian head coach attempts to build a squad capable of successfully operating in a preferred 3-5-2 formation, the end could well be nigh for the six-cap ace at Tottenham.

Despite links to Cambiaso and Besiktas starlet Ridvan Yilmaz, when using the Fbref comparison tool the closes match to the marauding wideman return as Chelsea ace Ben Chilwell, Borussia Monchengladbach defender Stefan Lainer and Villarreal’s Alfonso Pedraza – all of whom would represent a worthwhile replacement for Reguilon.

Wolves: Report confirms interest in Ronan

Wolves midfielder Connor Ronan is attracting interest from multiple clubs according to a report from the Scottish Daily Express.

The lowdown: Loan sensation

With Ruben Neves looking more and more likely to leave the Black Country this summer, it looks like Ronan may not be too far behind.

Signed from Rochdale in 2014, he came through the youth ranks at Molineux before making a senior debut in 2016 against Nottingham Forest.

The 24-year-old has made 13 appearances for the Wanderers’ first-team altogether but has spent a majority of his professional career out on loan with spells at Walsall, Portsmouth, Dunajska Streda, Grasshoppers and Blackpool.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/all-the-latest-from-wolves-4/” title=”All the latest from Wolves!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Having been sent to St Mirren for the duration of the 2021/22 campaign, Ronan is now attracting interest for a permanent move…

The latest: Permanent deal?

As per the Scottish Daily Express, St Mirren, Aberdeen and St Pauli are all keen on landing the Republic of Ireland youth international.

It’s claimed that the German Bundesliga.2 side have ‘registered an interest’ in Ronan ahead of the summer transfer window.

The report does however state that the man described as being ‘valuable’ by ex-teammate George Dobson is ‘keen’ to return to Wolves and break into Bruno Lage’s plans.

The verdict: Cash in

Under contract at Molineux until 2024 having signed a new deal in September 2020, Ronan would be well within his rights to fight for a place in the first team next season.

However, despite a stellar campaign on loan this term containing eight goals and five assists in 29 appearances across all competitions, at 24 and without a single Premier League minute under his belt, a move permanent move would perhaps be the best bet for all parties.

Even with the possible departure of Neves widely speculated, Lage would surely look to replace the Portuguese star in the market as opposed to from within and the 14-cap Under 21 international should seriously consider the reported suitors.
