'250 won't be a bad score' – Imran Farhat

At the end of a truncated first day’s play, which began over two hours late due to a wet outfield and closed early owing to bad light, Pakistan were in an uncomfortable position. There were no hidden demons in the pitch, and a slow yet steady opening stand of 60 in 194 deliveries seemingly had Pakistan – who were put in to bat – on the route to stability. The opener Imran Farhat, who contributed an obdurate 98-ball 32 to that start, did not entirely believe Pakistan had been shut out of the contest at 161 for 6. “The score at the moment is not bad, if you look at the conditions. If we score another 100 runs it will be good, because our bowling is very good,” he said. “A score of 250 won’t be a bad score. We still believe and we’re still fighting. [Mohammad] Asif, Umar Gul and [Mohammed] Aamer are in form, we’ve got Danish Kaneria playing too, we expect a lot from him here.”Mohammad Yousuf, Pakistan’s captain, said he would have opted to field as well. The pitch did not appear to do too much, and Pakistan had four silly dismissals to blame for their predicament. Salman Butt took on a short ball, Farhat tried to run Vettori past slip, Shoaib Malik pushed uppishly to mid-off, and Misbah-ul-Haq, on his return to the side, fell slog-sweeping Vettori.Farhat credited New Zealand’s tidy attack for putting pressure on Pakistan. “We didn’t have any such plan, we were just looking to be positive, be it batting or bowling” he said. “We started well but suddenly we lost a wicket, and then a couple, and we came under pressure. We survived well, and on this pitch you’ve got to concentrate. The weather keeps changing a bit, it was windy and there was a bit of moisture in the track on the first day. They bowled very well, put the ball in the right areas, and at the end of the day we didn’t have many partnerships.”Umar Akmal had a memorable debut in Dunedin, following a century with a polished 75 in the second innings batting at No. 5, but here he was promoted to No. 3. There have been reports in claiming that no batsman was willing to bat at one-down, and that Umar was thrust into the position. The decision, said Farhat, was taken to accommodate Misbah two spots lower.”Misbah-ul-Haq came back, and he’s an experienced player who has batted at No. 5,” he said. “The management knows that Umar Akmal can play at No.3, so it’s a collective decision. It’s about who is comfortable. He played very well. It’s not a bad decision. He’s willing and in good touch.”

Leeds: Phil Hay drops Struijk injury update

Leeds United centre-back Pascal Struijk missed Saturday’s Premier League fixture due to a foot injury.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to a claim made by Phil Hay, with The Athletic journalist revealing on Twitter that the 22-year-old defender was in line to feature in the Whites’ trip to Stamford Bridge this weekend. However, the former Netherlands under-17 international picked up a foot injury in training on Friday, which subsequently ruled him out of the clash in west London.

In his 13-word tweet on Saturday, Hay said: “Struijk was going to play today but injured his foot in training yesterday.”

 Fans will be devastated

Considering the sheer volume of injuries that a number of Leeds United’s most important players have picked up in recent weeks, the news that Struijk could now join his stricken teammates in the treatment room will undoubtedly have left the Elland Road faithful gutted.

Indeed, centre-forward Rodrigo missed Saturday’s 3-2 defeat in London due to a knock to his heel, centre-back Robin Koch was unavailable due to illness, and Patrick Bamford, Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper were all sidelined due to hamstring injuries.

These absentees, coupled with the injury to the £8.1m-rated Struijk, resulted in Marcelo Bielsa having no other option but to field right-back Luke Ayling in the heart of defence. Although the 30-year-old turned in an admirable display at Stamford Bridge, it was hardly an ideal scenario against a Chelsea attack consisting of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Romelu Lukaku and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

With the fixtures not getting any easier for the Whites in the coming weeks – Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool are up next for Bielsa’s side – should the 22-year-old be ruled out for any length of time, Leeds could easily see themselves being dragged back into a relegation scrap come Christmas.

E quanto antes a gente resolver nossa vida é melhor.

Celtic reach Reo Hatate agreement

Celtic have reached a ‘general agreement’ with Kawasaki Frontale for Reo Hatate, according to Japanese outlet Hochi.

The Lowdown: Hatate profiled

Hatate has recently just helped Kawasaki Frontale win a second consecutive J1 League title, making 38 appearances in 2020/21.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-19/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He turned out in a number of positions, mainly in midfield and at left-back, with Celtic reportedly seeing Hatate as a midfield addition, with his current contract set to expire at the end of January.

The 24-year-old is on €38,000-a-year (around £625-a-week) with his current employers, but it seems as if a move to Glasgow to join countryman Kyogo Furuhashi is on the cards.

The Latest: Agreement reached

Japanese outlet Hochi posted on Twitter on Sunday evening, shortly after Celtic’s 1-0 win over Motherwell, claiming Hatate is set to ‘move’ to Scotland.

A ‘general agreement’ has been reached between the two clubs, so it seems as if the Hoops will pay a small fee to the J1 League side for Hatate’s services.

The Verdict: More good news

The Hoops have also agreed on a fee with Gamba Osaka for midfielder Yosuke Ideguchi, so Celtic are now closing in on two January signings already.

That can only be good news, especially with the number of injuries Ange Postecoglou has had to deal with in recent weeks, while the fact everything is in place so soon shows impressive planning from a club who have often been lacking in the boardroom in recent years.

Postecoglou will know just what Hatate and Ideguchi will bring to Scotland following his time as a manager in Japan, and the quicker Celtic can complete their January business, the better, with Japanese forward Daizen Maeda another on the club’s winter window wishlist.

Pietersen welcomes Gooch advice

Kevin Pietersen is thrilled to have Graham Gooch’s help as he fights to regain form ahead of the opening Test against South Africa on December 16.

Cricinfo staff08-Dec-2009Kevin Pietersen is thrilled to have Graham Gooch’s help as he fights to regain form ahead of the opening Test against South Africa on December 16. Gooch is due to be with the squad until the end of the first Test at Centurion but is unsure whether he will continue beyond then.If he does, he will have Pietersen’s full support, something previous England coaches have not always enjoyed. When Pietersen was captain, he was famously critical of Peter Moores, the head coach at the time, and they both ended up losing their job when Pietersen declared to the ECB that he could not take the team forward with Moores at the helm.Yet Gooch’s experience and dedicated approach is something Pietersen feels can benefit the whole squad. “The legend that the man is, it will do wonders for the group of batters we have. I had a chat with him, and he talked a heck of a lot of sense,” he said.”I really, really enjoyed what he said – so I look forward to working with Goochie in a big, big way over the next few weeks.””The way he thinks is pretty similar to the way Andy Flower thinks, and the way I think – how simple batting is, but the hard work you have to put in and the mental side and the concentration. It all makes sense. You’ve got to back your own ability. In international sport, that is fundamental to success.”Pietersen was less welcoming, however, of the advice offered in Ian Botham’s newspaper column about England’s fitness and training regimes. Following injuries to pacemen James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Graham Onions during the tour, Botham was critical of England’s warm-ups, declaring that bowlers were “squat-jumping like kangaroos” in training and therefore making themselves more susceptible to injury.Yet Pietersen argues that injuries have happened throughout the game’s history and England’s regime is suited to the demands of modern cricket, particularly the need for all members of the side to be good fielders. “In this day and age, with the amount we play, we have to put in the hard yards. We have to train hard, and our bodies have to be in tune. Injuries are going to come along – in the 1980s, 1990s and now.”New methods of training have definitely come a long way and got better.I think it’s helped a lot of the players. I think our fitness levels are fantastic. Just look at the agility of the one-day team, everybody’s fielding – the way our fast bowler can field at midwicket or extra-cover,” he said.”I don’t see it as a problem at all. I think it’s great for discipline. Running up sand dunes, like we did the other day, is a bit different – and for team spirit it is fantastic.”

Man City fans flock to striker update

Flocking to Twitter, many Manchester City fans have erupted over the latest transfer update out of their club following on from their alleged agreement to sell Ferran Torres to Barcelona.

The Spaniard, as per very reliable reports, will return to Spain as the Catalans and City shake hands on a £46.7m (€55m) initial fee plus a further £8.5m (€10m) in add-ons (Sky Sports).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/man-city-latest-updates-2/” title=”Man City latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Torres came to Eastlands with bags of potential and impressed on more than one occasion, but a move to Barcelona is seemingly too good to turn down for the player with City now cashing in after just one full season.

As the Sky Blues and sporting director Txiki Begiristain look set for a cash injection, an update has emerged on City’s transfer plans courtesy of reliable reporter James Ducker of The Telegraph.

According to his information, the money raised by Torres’ sale will likely be put towards the signing of a star striker for next year with Pep Guardiola’s side still firmly in the race to sign Borussia Dortmund superstar Erling Braut Haaland.

Man City fans erupt…

Flocking to this transfer claim, which one fan called ‘massive’, many City supporters have erupted on Twitter given their club’s failure to sign a world-class forward in the summer.

It is arguably the only gaping hole in Guardiola’s squad after the departure of club legend Sergio Aguero with the City coach yet again improvising with makeshift options this campaign.

Hearing the fee for Torres could be reinvested to back City with a star forward, as a result, has come as music to the ears of supporters – especially with Haaland as a target.

Foco no título!
