Ameaçados pela zona de rebaixamento, Chapecoense e Ponte Preta entraram em campo precisando urgentemente pontuar. As duas equipes começaram a rodada com os mesmos 28 pontos e podiam ser ultrapassados por Bahia, Coritiba e Vitória, o que os colocaria dentro do Z4. A Ponte, jogando fora de casa, (re)estreava Eduardo Baptista como treinador, enquanto que os catarinenses ainda apostavam no até então interino Emerson Cris.

O jogo começou animado, com a Ponte tomando a iniciatia e a Chape tentando sair rápido em contra-ataques. Reinaldo, aos nove minutos, fez grande jogada pela esquerda, deixando Nino Paraíba no chão, e cruzando rasteiro. Luan Peres cortou para escanteio. Depois, a Macaca também deu perigo, quando Danilo Barcelos quase fez de falta.

A partir dos 25 minutos, porém, a partida esfriou. Muitos erros de passe e pouca criativiade por parte de ambas as equipes iam deixando o jogo difícil de se assistir. Quando o 0 a 0 parecia certo no primeiro tempo, Lucas Marques, em um raro momento de pressão da Chape, encheu o pé de fora da área, e o goleiro João Carlos aceitou. 1 a 0 para o Verdão antes do intervalo.

A Chapecoense voltou melhor dos vestiários. Conseguia manter a posse de bola e, em certas oportunidades, chegava perto do gol da Ponte Preta. A finalização aceitada por João Carlos na primeira etapa encorajava os jogadores do Verdão a arriscarem de longa distância. O goleiro, no entanto, estava dando conta do recado no segundo tempo.

A Ponte, mesmo quando conseguia ficar um pouco com a bola, ainda tinha muita dificuldade em furar o bloqueio defensivo dos donos da casa. Léo Gamalho ficava isolado na frente, sem receber apoio ou uma bola de qualidade para finalizar.

Com a vantagem no placar e sem sofrer pressão da Ponte, a Chape foi cozinhando o jogo esperando o apito final. Até teve a chance de matar a partida com Penilla, aos 26 minutos, mas o atacante parou em grande defesa de João Carlos. Mas não fez falta. O Verdão do Oeste acabou mesmo conquistando a vitória e os três pontos. A Chapecoense voltará a campo no próximo sábado, quando visita o Vasco, em São Januário, às 16h. A Macaca atuará apenas no dia 2 de novembro, uma segunda, contra o Flamengo, às 20h, no Moisés Lucarelli.

A cada convocação, a cada treinamento, é uma situação ímpar de estar em contato com a Seleção. Eu não conheço de seleção. É muito pouco. Sempre que a gente volta, a gente volta querendo fazer tudo, porque esse trabalho é importante. A gente fica assim, porque esse trabalho é difícil. Teste não tem na Seleção. Tem oportunidades. Já adiantava que o Ederson iria jogar. E seria injusto colocar ele para jogar hoje, porque seria uma dificuldade muito grande. Outra coisa, competimos os dois últimos jogos sem tomar cartão. Queremos estar o máximo de tempo possível e manter a estrutura da equipe.

It’s said that you can win or lose a Twenty20 game in a blink and Kieron Pollard, batting like a man possessed, proved the adage right by engineering a stunning win against New South Wales.’It’s not over until it’s over’ is another of those cricketing clichés that is not always held to account but tonight was the night for clichés – in a Hyderabad minute, everything changed.NSW unleashed their two dynamites, David Warner and Phillip Hughes, who propelled them to 170, which seemed more than enough at one stage but Pollard, with a violent 18-ball 54, crafted a remarkable comeback in Twenty20 history.The chase never seemed to be going anywhere after the top order had combusted and when Darren Bravo was run out, the equation read: 80 from 42 balls. Game over, surely? But everything changed in stunning fashion as first Denesh Ramdin and then Pollard played out of their skins to turn the game on its head.It all began in the 14th over, bowled by Stuart Clark. Ramdin pinged the midwicket boundary twice before he lifted the spinner Steven Smith in the next over for a boundary over extra-cover and a slog-swept six over midwicket. However, Ramdin fell in the next over and once again, NSW were the favourites or so one thought.If it started in the 14th over, the game-breaker was the 17th over in which Pollard simply went berserk against the medium-pace of Moises Henriques and looted 27 runs. The second ball disappeared to long-off, the third was sliced over point, the fourth, a full toss, was collected by a spectator beyond midwicket boundary, the next, another nervy full toss, was picked up from behind deep square-leg boundary, and the last delivery flew to third man. Game almost over.If there was any doubt, it vanished when Simon Katich handed Henriques the responsibility of bowling the 19th over and Pollard finished off the chase with a couple of bludgeoned sixes.NSW had done everything that they could till Pollard’s whirlwind innings,. The bowling was disciplined and the batting was led from the front by Warner and Hughes. With only a few deliveries into the contest it was clear that pace on the ball was going to be fodder for both batsmen, especially when T&T didn’t possess anyone with real speed. Warner and Hughes stayed adjacent to the line and threaded the off-side with their punches, cuts, and muscled drives.T&T had to switch to plan B and Daren Ganga quickly brought on the spinners and medium-pacers with the ability to take pace off the ball. It worked initially as NSW slowed down from 50 in six overs to 77 in 11. The two spinners in operation at that period were the chinaman bowler Dave Mohammed and the accurate offspinner Sherwin Ganga, who both took the ball away from the left-handed openers. Both batsmen managed to prevent the adrenalin rush from kicking in and played out this period intelligently with dabbed singles and twos.They knew Ganga had to change his bowlers at some point and the opportunity to break free came in the 12 th over against the legspinner Samuel Badree. Unlike Sherwin Ganga and Mohammed, Badree was guilty of overpitching his flighted deliveries and Warner took full toll: Two disappeared over long-on and long-off and as Badree, in trying to adjust his length, slipped in long-hops, Warner crashed them to square-leg and swung the last one over midwicket. Twenty-four runs were looted in that over and the run-rate had shot up again.Ganga did the obvious by taking out Badree and bringing back his two best spinners. Mohammed picked up Warner’s wicket and teased Hughes with his variations but Hughes knew he had to just wait for the seamers to return. And when they did, he hit them around the ground. Ravi Rampaul, who had given away three boundaries in the first over of the innings, was carted to the point and straight boundaries by Warner while Henriques lofted Lendl Simmons to long-on and to midwicket boundary.Hughes was as unconventional as ever; those feet never seem to get in line but his bat does as he slashes and carves it around like a sword. There wasn’t a single “beautiful” shot in the traditional sense of the word but then there is nothing traditional about Hughes’ batting. However, there was, as ever, quite bit of skill in his violence. A shot that stood out from the general massacre that he was attempting to unleash was as deft and skilful as it gets: Rampaul almost slipped in a yorker on the middle stump in the 19th over, perhaps a touch short of the blockhole. Hughes had opened his stance, waiting to bludgeon it, but on seeing the length, he crouched back, opened the bat-face and guided it deliberately to left of backward point and to the boundary.Hughes would have thought he had done enough to be the hero for the day but Pollard had decided to seize the day.

Crystal Palace have received a potentially significant injury boost over key defender Joachim Andersen after he picked up a thigh problem.

What’s the word?

The 25-year-old has quickly established himself as a key player for the Eagles following his arrival over the summer, starting 11 Premier League games in a row before his fitness struggle kept him out of the weekend’s defeat against Aston Villa.

However, Andersen was forced to watch on from the sidelines as Palace’s seven-game unbeaten run came to an end at Selhurst Park.

But The Athletic’s Matt Woosnam was able to provide a positive update over the centre-back’s condition, providing hope that he will be able to make his return to first-team action sooner rather than later.

Following Saturday’s result, he tweeted: “Andersen’s absence with a hamstring problem not thought to be serious was a significant contribution to this defeat”.

Woosnam then added in a separate tweet: “Palace hopeful that Andersen will be back soon from what is understood to be a minor issue.”

Patrick Vieira will be buzzing

News that the Denmark international is not expected to be consigned to the treatment table for an extensive period of time will leave Patrick Vieira buzzing with relief.

يُذكر أن الجولة السابعة من الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز، من المُقرر أن تنطلق عصر السبت 10 سبتمبر، في تمام الساعة الرابعة عصرًا بمباراة بين ليفربول ووفرهامبتون، على أن تُختتم يوم الإثنين بمباراة بين ليدز يونايتد ونوتينجهام فورست.

Those whose actions are believed to be suspect have been reported and will be no-balled without a warning, the BCCI has stated.A list of 32 bowlers with suspect actions was compiled by an advisory group, which subsequently sent the named players for rehabilitation to the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore. From the list of 32, the BCCI has reported that 12 bowling actions ranged from between 0-15 degrees as accepted by the ICC, while the other 20 bent their arms at a flexion limit of more than 15 degrees. The list has been sent to match referees, umpires, coaches and affiliated regional boards across India.”During the pre-match meeting the match referee will only convey the warning and the outcome as per action replay if any bowler from the circulated list plays and bowls with suspect action,” Ratnakar Shetty, the BCCI’s chief administrative officer, said. “Since the warning is already conveyed to the captain during the pre-match meetings by match referee, there is no need for an umpire to give any further warning to such bowlers on field of play.”If the bowler with suspect action plays and if in the opinion of the umpires he bowls with suspect action they can immediately call and stop him from bowling as per the law. He should not be allowed to bowl during the match. This action should be clearly communicated by match referees to team officials.”During the first round of action in this season’s Ranji Trophy season, three bowlers have had their actions under scrutiny. Two Baroda bowlers were called for chucking in two days while a day later Kulamani Parida, the veteran Railways spinner, was stopped from bowling during a game. Delhi’s offspinner Yogesh Nagar was also no-balled for a suspect action on Friday.The BCCI released a list of eleven bowlers reported for chucking during the junior and senior Twenty20 competitions, before the Ranji season. They are: Gujarat’s Mohnish Parmar (whose action was subsequently cleared by the BCCI) and Amit Singh, the Under-19 Maharashtra bowler Sagar Sawant, Uttar Pradesh’s Mohammad Norman, Rohan Thapa from Baroda, Delhi’s Nagar, Sayed Zaki of Orissa, Punjab’s Ankur Jund, Vobhor Bisen from Vidarbha, Tripura’s Debabhakt Jamta and Arlen Konwar from Assam.

Aston Villa have not approached Rangers over Borna Barisic, according to Heart & Hand. 

The lowdown

It’s been claimed that former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is keen on bringing Barisic south of the border, having taken over at Aston Villa.

A report suggested that an £8million January transfer was a genuine possibility. Gerrard regards Barisic as a ‘fantastic player’ who’s ‘really, really consistent’.

Barisic is under contract at Ibrox until May 2024 after penning a new £18,000-per-week deal in January 2020 (via Transfermarkt) however, meaning the Light Blues are in a fantastic negotiating position.

The latest

Heart & Hand, an official media partner of the football club, tweeted that they had ‘asked’ about Barisic and ‘been told’ that there was no contact between Rangers and Villa.

“Any reports to the contrary are false,” they added.

The verdict

It seems that Gerrard and Villa have other targets in mind at left-back. For example, a recent report suggested that they are keen on Stuttgart’s Borna Sosa, a compatriot of Barisic.

This is very good news for Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Rangers. According to WhoScored, Barisic has been the team’s third-best performer this season, behind only Joe Aribo and 10-assist right-back James Tavernier.

But there remains a possibility that Gerrard looks to raid his former club for a player he believes can make the step-up to the English Premier League.
