Application and discipline the key – Moles

Andy Moles believed the pitch is still favourable for batting and his side has the wherewithal to combat Sri Lanka’s impressive bowling attack

New Zealand face an enormous task as they try to save the first Test in Galle but their coach Andy Moles believes the pitch is still favourable for batting and his side has the wherewithal to combat Sri Lanka’s impressive bowling attack. The hosts batted aggressively, scoring at well over four-an-over and Tillakaratne Dilshan led their charge, racing to an unbeaten 123. New Zealand finished the fourth day at 30 for 1 in pursuit of an imposing 413. Chasing down the target, however, was not the immediate focus in New Zealand’s gameplan.”We are just looking to save the Test match at this stage,” Moles said. “If get to tea tomorrow we will be in a position to think about trying to win the game; obviously we are not going to turn down the opportunity. But realistically we’ve got to look to play the four wonderful bowlers Sri Lanka have got.”New Zealand’s batting line-up tackled the Sri Lankan bowlers well for a good part of their innings on the third day but lost wickets at crucial times. Each of their top six batsmen got starts and Daniel Vettori resisted brilliantly down the order to help avoid the follow-on and reduce the deficit to 153.”We showed a lot of application and discipline yesterday, especially the younger guys who are across here for the first time,” Moles said. We need more of that tomorrow. It’s a fantastic opportunity for us to save the Test match and go into the second Test with a lot of confidence especially with everybody feeling a lot better.”Moles took encouragement from the manner in which the wicket has played out, and though he felt the Sri Lankan bowlers would not be easy to negotiate, the batsmen still had plenty of assistance from the track, which has managed to hold together. “I am very confident that they can do it with application, discipline and character.History says that these guys [Sri Lanka] are going to bowl very well on this wicket but yet it hasn’t turned into a minefield. The covers coming on and off and the moisture that’s been around have probably kept the wicket together as a surface. I believe that if we play well and show a lot of character then there is no reason why we can’t bat out the day.”New Zealand, however, face a serious problem. Seven of their players have been hit by a stomach bug; Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder are the worst hit. The two returned to the team hotel at the start of the fourth day and the Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara allowed Reece Young, a substitute fielder, to keep wickets despite him not being a part of the squad for the first Test. The situation was so bad at one point that the bowling coach and the assistant coach were ready to go out and take the field, Moles said. He hoped a good night’s rest would help them recover to fight it out on the fifth day.”Of the 15 players who came down here only two players haven’t gone down with the bug,” Moles said. “It has been difficult obviously and in the field we have shown a lot of character under difficult circumstances. Obviously it is not the kind of performances what we expect but with the amount of discomfort the guys have got at the moment it is understandable but it’s not an excuse. We got to get on with the Test match tomorrow and hopefully the other guys should come out of it during the night and they’ll be fit enough to bat.”The toughest test for New Zealand, under such circumstances, was to deal with the difficult playing conditions with their physical health not being intact. “It’s a bug that causes a bit of a temperature and a bit of a virus and it’s going through very quickly,” Moles said. You feel sorry for the players because not only are they trying to perform under difficult circumstances and conditions, some of the guys are in some kind of discomfort and in a little bit of pain. That is the difficult part. We are not worried whether the guys are bowling badly or fielding badly, it’s the actual scene that’s going out there.”I’ve been really pleased with the character they’ve shown and under difficult circumstances they’ve gone out there and they’ve done their best although one or two have been in quite a lot of discomfort.”

West Ham fans excited by Belotti claim

Taking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have been left buzzing following reliable club insider ExWHUemployee’s claim involving Andrea Belotti.

The Torino captain has reportedly been on manager David Moyes and recruitment chief Rob Newman’s radar as West Ham continue their search for a brilliant back up forward (The Daily Express).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments-2/” title=”West Ham developments” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Concerns surround star man Michail Antonio and whether his past record of injury problems could resurface again over 2021/2022, leaving Moyes and the club ‘desperate’ to sign a striker over the summer.

Alas, the transfer mission fell flat and West Ham seem set to monitor their targets ahead of potential swoops in January.

ExWHUemployee, sharing the latest on Belotti in particular, has made a promising claim as he backs the Hammers’ interest.

According to his information, as explained on the West Ham Way Podcast, Italy’s international star is still set to be out of contract at the end this season as things stand.

As a result, West Ham are indeed eyeing Belotti as the 27-year-old is free to negotiate a pre-contract with overseas clubs in the winter window.

West Ham fans buzz…

Given links to the Serie A frontman have now been backed by a very reliable source, you can understand why many supporters have been left buzzing on social media.

The 41-cap star is arguably proven on the world’s biggest stages, having helped his nation to Euro 2020 glory, and his prolific record at club level is another incentive to swoop.

Since the beginning of 2019/2020, Belotti has racked up 31 goals and 10 assists in Serie A alone – pointing to a capable back up for Antonio and a potential bargain for free.

West Ham supporters certainly agree it’s a move worth pursuing, with one fan even calling him ‘perfect’ for Moyes.

Lingard ‘open’ to West Ham return

Jesse Lingard is reportedly ‘open’ to the idea of returning to West Ham in the January transfer window, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Hammers hero last season

At beginning of last season, not many Hammers fans would have expected Lingard to be a club hero come the end of the campaign.

That’s precisely what happened, however, with the 28-year-old excelling on loan after joining in January, scoring nine goals in 16 Premier League appearances.

Unfortunately, Lingard returned to Manchester United in the summer but he has been a fringe player under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer once again, starting zero top flight games and playing just an hour in total in the competition, despite the fact he has found the net twice in that time.

The Latest: Return on the cards?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones talked up the idea of Lingard making a popular return to the London Stadium, saying the Englishman is keen on it happening:

“He’s becoming open to the idea again. He was hoping things would work out for him at United but it hasn’t.

“He’s barely seen any football in the Premier League so it’s been a bit frustrating for him because he thought he’d get more of a look-in than he’s got. He probably feels he deserves that as well.”

The Verdict: Perfect potential signing

This is a wonderful time to be a West Ham fan, with David Moyes building a superb squad that looks capable of mounting a genuine top-four challenge – that momentous win over previously undefeated Liverpool speaks volumes.

Lingard could be the icing on the cake in January, though, bringing with him end product and experience that could further aid the Hammers – talkSPORT pundit Darren Gough even went so far as to compare one of the England international’s goals in East London to Diego Maradona.

It would also only improve the feel-good factor at the club currently, given how loved Lingard was during his short stint in east London, and is a win for the player too, granting him more opportunities to secure a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

Clarke and Hilfenhaus sparkled

After the conclusion of a topsy-turvy series, Cricinfo looks back at the pivotal moments of the Ashes which England eventually won 2-1

Peter English24-Aug-2009

Michael Clarke: comfortably Australia’s best player•Getty Images

8.5Michael Clarke
Australia’s best player, even with two slips at The Oval, collected 448 runs at 64.00. He showed he could perform in any situation, delaying England at Lord’s and saving the game at Edgbaston with centuries, and picking up 93 in tough conditions in Leeds. Still doesn’t know what it’s like to win the Ashes over here, but will probably be leading the team when it returns in 2013.8Ben Hilfenhaus
The most challenging bowler of the series, consistently swinging and upsetting the batsmen, and the most successful with 22 victims. Was tipped for success on this trip a couple of years ago and exceeded the expectations, having started the tour as the fifth choice. His next test is to prove he can work on surfaces not offering seaming benefits.7.5Marcus North
A great find, he gave steel to the middle order in three Tests, but missed out in the other two. So far in his seven games he either fails or goes big. Centuries in Cardiff and Leeds showed maturity and class while his offspin was also useful at times. Could develop into a leader of the team.6.5Peter Siddle
A slight disappointment and not as good as he was in South Africa. Started with speed and inconsistency and finished with a better line and more success. Ran through 20 wickets at 30.80, but wasn’t the promised dominator, although his 5 for 21 at Headingley set up Australia’s innings win.6Ricky Ponting
A below-average series for Ponting, but a pretty good one by anyone else’s standards, with 385 at 48.12. Opened with a beautiful 150 but then failed to cash in his starts. His half-centuries in Leeds and The Oval were the most fluent of the matches, but he was powerless to stop his revenge mission, and leaves with an unwanted record of losing two Ashes series in England in a row.Nathan Hauritz
A big success of the tour – even though he played only three games. Was expected to be outclassed, but hung in and returned 10 wickets at 32.10, more than anybody’s wildest dreams. Showed control, brains and courage, particularly after dislocating his finger on the opening day at Lord’s. Left out in Leeds in a correct move, but was a costly omission at The Oval.5.5Shane Watson
A surprise success story as opener, with three consecutive half-centuries and two more starts after coming in for Phillip Hughes at Edgbaston. Not a natural at the top of the order, he will be better suited when a position arrives in the team’s middle. If he can fix his lbw problems with balls coming back at him, he will become a long-term player whether he bowls or not.Brad Haddin
Brilliant batting early in the series, registering a hundred and a half-century in the first two Tests, before it tailed off after his broken finger on the morning of the game in Birmingham. Showed courage to come back in Leeds, but there is little good to say about his keeping. Gave up 76 byes in the series (Matt Prior allowed 44 in the same number of innings) and was far inferior glovewise to his understudy Graham Manou.5Simon Katich
Opened the series with a fine hundred in Cardiff, but didn’t match that again, with his second-best score coming with 50 in the final innings at The Oval. Wasn’t able to prevent a second defeat in England but leaves this contest in much better shape than in 2005. Was also a strong presence in the field, particularly in south London.4.5Michael Hussey
A brilliant final innings at The Oval could not save the game for Australia, but eased the pressure on his struggling career. Before the final day there were only two half-centuries and a lot of confused early dismissals. More action in the Sheffield Shield should help him rediscover his extreme focus and the position of his off stump.Mitchell Johnson
A shadow of the man who dominated South Africa as he couldn’t deal with the expectation of being the attack leader in such an important series. Began to improve at Edgbaston, following his horror at Lord’s and some off-field problems, and finished the fourth Test with a five-for. There were glimpses of spark at The Oval along with more short and wide offerings. Through it all he still managed to finish with 20 wickets.4Stuart Clark
Called for the final two matches and peaked in his opening spell with three wickets before lunch at Headingley. Life was harder after that, but his accuracy remains even if his speed has dropped following elbow surgery. May still have a role back home, but will no longer be an automatic pick in the attack’s top three.3Graham Manou
Received an unpredictable debut thanks to Haddin’s last-minute broken finger and put in an old-school wicketkeeping performance that was almost flawless. Captured three tidy catches but is unlikely to see any more action unless Haddin is hurt again. It’s a shame.2.5Phillip Hughes
Started the series as Australia’s gun young batsman but his participation stopped after two Tests of being roughed up by Andrew Flintoff. In three innings he scrapped 57 runs but was too loose to be depended on and was replaced by Watson. Will come back once he’s polished his agricultural method.

Me arrependo e peço desculpa – publicou o atacante.

Newcastle: Dummett set for return

A promising update has emerged on Newcastle United centre-back Paul Dummett regarding his current injury situation.

What’s the latest?

According to Lee Ryder of The Chronicle, the defender is poised to make his comeback in December to hand Eddie Howe a boost ahead of the festive period.

He has been missing for the entire season so far with a calf injury but is now just ‘weeks’ away from making his return and being a first team option again.

Fans will be delighted

Newcastle fans will surely be delighted by this update as it will provide Howe with another player to call upon as he attempts to revive the club’s fortunes. The Magpies are currently bottom of the Premier League table and have only six points after 12 matches.

They are five points off safety and are the only team in the division yet to win a game, whilst they have also failed to keep a single clean sheet. They are letting in 2.3 goals per game and Howe needs to change something to improve the defensive setup in order to stem the tide, as needing to score three goals per game on average to win is a tall order for a team currently netting 1.3 per match.

Last season, Dummett averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.76 as he was deployed at centre-back and left-back. He made 4.7 clearances and completed 2.2 tackles and interceptions per game, displaying his defensive qualities as he put in solid performances on a regular basis for Steve Bruce’s side.

In 2021/22, Emil Krafth (6.60), Ciaran Clark (6.64) and Fabian Schar (6.70) have all averaged lower ratings in the Premier League, suggesting that Dummett could potentially be an improvement on some of the current centre-back options. Therefore, his return will surely leave fans delighted, as he could bolster the team and improve their chances of keeping the ball out of their own net.

Hopefully the Welshman will be back in action within the next couple of weeks and be able to play a part in Newcastle’s Premier League matches in December. Keeping within touching distance of safety heading into January could be crucial in landing transfer targets in the next window, and given his statistics last season, Dummett’s return could help with that.

Asif undergoes dope test

Mohammad Asif was taken for a dope test during Pakistan’s training session•AFP

Mohammad Asif, the Pakistan fast bowler, was taken for an ICC dope test during a team practice session in Johannesburg on Thursday. Asif has tested positive twice before for the steroid nandrolone, once at the inaugural IPL last year, and ironically, once just before the last Champions Trophy in India in 2006.His inclusion in the Pakistan squad for this tournament is his first involvement with the team in over a year and it comes only after he completed a one-year ban on September 22 for the IPL offence.”Asif has been taken for a dope test by the ICC,” a member of the team management told Cricinfo. “It is nothing out of the ordinary and in keeping with their doping procedures at all such tournaments.”It is likely that Asif’s test is part of the ICC’s doping policy of target-testing some players in addition to the regular random testing, a practice they began at the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean. Even then it was thought to be aimed at Pakistan, who had included Shoaib Akhtar and Asif in their squad, months after they tested positive in tests conducted by the PCB just before the 2006 Champions Trophy (they were given bans after the test, but had them overturned on appeal). The pair were eventually pulled out at the last minute and though the PCB denied it, it was widely believed that the board was worried that levels of nandrolone in their body had not receded to legal levels. This was Asif’s first training session with the Pakistan side, as he was not allowed to train with them until the ban was completed. He was not included in the XI for Pakistan’s five-wicket win over the West Indies in their tournament opener and it is not yet sure whether he will play in the big one against India on Saturday. As per normal practice, two other Pakistan players were tested before their first game.Asif’s troubles began in October 2006 when he first tested positive for nandrolone before the Champions Trophy in India. He pleaded ignorance over the substances he was using and though he was initially banned for a year, that punishment was scrapped on appeal. He then tested positive for nandrolone during the inaugural season of the IPL in 2008 and his B sample also returned positive though there was a difference in the level of nandrolone in the two readings. In June 2008, on his way home from the IPL, he was detained at Dubai airport for allegedly possessing opium. He was deported after prosecutors argued that the offence was a ‘trivial’ one and a case not worth pursuing. He was banned by the IPL for the steroids offence this February but the one-year ban was back-dated to September last year, thereby making him eligible for the Champions Trophy.
