Edinson Cavani is fit to face Aston Villa

Manchester United have received a big injury boost ahead of their Premier League clash with Aston Villa after striker Edinson Cavani was declared ready for action.

What’s the word?

The 34-year-old is yet to start for the Red Devils this season due to personal issues and a back injury picked up in a behind-closed-doors friendly, but United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that he’s now available for selection.

“He’s in the squad tomorrow, he’s been training, and now he feels ready to contribute,” the Norwegian revealed in Friday’s press conference.

“He came on against Wolverhampton, then he got a slight strain in the international break when we had a game, and he’s ready again. He’s worked really hard and diligently, and hopefully, he’ll have an impact as he did last season.”

Solskjaer then teased the prospect of summer signing Cristiano Ronaldo and Cavani playing alongside each other, forming an experienced partnership with dozens of major trophies between them.

“It’s exciting to see those two together, I’m sure that’ll be a good partnership as well, wanting to be on the end of things. We’ve seen some teams dropping deep against us, not giving space in behind and they’re definitely two boys you’d like to see in around the goal in that scenario, I can see those two working well together,” the manager concluded.

Solskjaer will be delighted

News that Cavani will be able to play some part against Villa this afternoon will surely leave Solskjaer feeling delighted.

The Uruguay international was instrumental to United’s improvement last term, scoring 17 goals and providing a further six assists in 39 appearances.

Although the arrival of five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo has eased the goalscoring burden on the 34-year-old this time around, his presence will still be a huge positive for the 20-time English champions.

Solskjaer’s charges will be hoping to maintain their unbeaten start to the new Premier League season when Villa come to town, and their chances of doing just that may have significantly increased with Cavani’s return confirmed.

Lucas Romero planeja reação do Cruzeiro diante do Palmeiras no BR17

Entramos na área do time deles jogando.

Christian strengthens Guyana

Cricinfo takes a look at the action from the second day of the second round of matches in the 2008-09 Regional Four Day Competition

Derwin Christian led a rearguard fight to put Guyana within reach of first-innings points against Combined Campuses & Colleges in Barbados. Christian was unbeaten on 47 as Guyana reached 237 for 8 before bad light stopped play 18 overs early on a rain-affected second day. Narsingh Deonarine had led the top-half of the batting with his 49, supported by Leon Johnson’s 46. But the Guyanese batting was undermined by purposeful bowling from CCC, with Kevin McClean picking up 3 for 47. Khismar Catlin and offspinner Ryan Austin finished with two wickets apiece. Earlier, CCC, resuming on 262 for 8, could only add three runs before being bowled out.Guyana made a steady start to their chase before McClean removed openers Shemroy Barrington and Krishna Arjune. Johnson and Deonarine took Guyana to lunch on 74 for 2 but after adding 78 for the third wicket, Johnson was caught at short leg by Nekoli Parris off Austin. Left-hander Deonarine inched closer to his 50 before McClean trapped him lbw. When Christian came on shortly after tea, Guyana were at 163 for 5, but slipped to 181 for 7, after Royston Crandon was caught behind off Catlin for 7. Esuan Crandon fell cheaply, caught at cover. An eighth-wicket stand of 35 between Christian and Davindra Bishoo stabilised the innings, and even after Bishoo fell, bowled by Jamel Noel, Veerasammy Permaul joined Christian to take Guyana through to stumps.Sulieman Benn’s half-century was the only bright spark on a rain-disrupted second day – less than two hours of play took place – between Windward Islands and Barbados in Grenada. Benn struck 76 to help propel Barbados to 389 for 8, after they resumed on their overnight score of 305 for 7. Unbeaten on 39 overnight, Benn hit eight fours and one six in his 108-ball innings, and shared a eighth-wicket stand of 94 with Kemar Roach, who remained unbeaten on 49. Roach took 69 balls and hit five fours and a giant six over long-off, off medium-pacer Deighton Butler late. The visitors reached 352 for 7 in the morning before showers halted play. When the game finally resumed, offspinner Shane Shillingford picked up his fourth wicket in the brief 45-minute period, bowling Benn.Jamaica could manage three wickets against Trinidad and Tobago on another day ruined by rain. From their overnight 145 for 4, T&T stuttered to 189 for 7 when rain stopped play before lunch in Port of Spain. Jamaica began positively when legspinner Odean Brown removed Sherwin Ganga and wicketkeeper Gibran Mohammed off consecutive balls. Ganga could added only three to his overnight score of 4, after Danza Hyatt clutched a bat-pad chance at silly mid-on, while Mohammed fell first ball, caught behind by Keith Hibbert. Richard Kelly prevented the hat-trick and with Darren Bravo took the score to 172 for 6, before rain stopped play for an hour. The pair had a seventh-wicket stand of 38, but Bravo was trapped lbw by Gavin Wallace just before another stoppage. There was further bad news for T&T, because the allrounder Rayad Emrit has been ruled out of action for six weeks after breaking his left arm during an indoor net session. Emrit, 27, was batting during a rain break on day one of this match when the incident occurred. “Rayad’s experience as well as ability will be sorely missed,” T&T manager Colin Borde said. “It is really unfortunate for him as he has worked extremely hard over the six months. He is a strong character and will bounce back well.”Emrit will likely miss T&T’s next five matches in the regional first-class competition.

Strauss seeks balance for IPL targets

England’s star players will depart for the Caribbean on Wednesday without having signed their central contracts

England’s star players will depart for the Caribbean on Wednesday without having signed the central contracts that they were offered back in September, but their captain, Andrew Strauss, still believes that the lure of the Indian Premier League, the biggest stumbling block in negotiations, will not affect the performance of the national side.Talks were ongoing on Tuesday between the ECB and England’s Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA), with Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff among the most prominent candidates for a lucrative stint in the IPL.Flintoff is believed to have been targeted by franchises in Mumbai and Delhi, while Pietersen was seen having talks with representatives from the Bangalore Royal Challengers during England’s recent tour of India. But the deadline for players making themselves available for the IPL is February 4 – the same day as the first day of the opening Test in Jamaica – while the auction itself takes place two days later. The IPL debate was an issue before the personality clash which led to Pietersen’s resignation from the England captaincy and Peter Moores’s sacking as head coach earlier this month, and it threatens to again destabilise a team now doing its best to rally round Strauss.”There’s a huge will on behalf of the players, the PCA and the ECB to get it done and dusted as soon as possible,” Strauss said at Gatwick Airport’s Hilton Hotel. “Everyone will work as hard as they can to ensure it’s done before the cricket starts.During last season’s inaugural IPL campaign, England players were effectively barred from the tournament because of a fixture clash with their home international programme.”From the players’ point of view, there are huge opportunities there financially,” said Strauss. “We need to find a way of marrying the opportunities available to the players and making sure the players are able to commit themselves to playing for England.”England’s management has already agreed to a two-week “window” from April 10-24 in a competition, and the wealthy owners of the franchise teams will bid for some of the world’s best unsigned players at an auction on February 6. But Lalit Modi, the IPL chief, has said anyone involved must be prepared to commit for at least a four-week stint. One compromise being mooted is a three-week IPL spell for the likes of Pietersen and Flintoff, which would allow them to return to England in time for the first Test against West Indies at Lord’s on May 6.However, they would then be ruled out of the preceding round of County Championship fixtures, a move that would anger their domestic sides and raise questions about their readiness to play Test cricket.Strauss, unlikely to be an IPL target even before becoming England captain as he has not played one-day international cricket since the 2007 World Cup, said: “Players have to be fully prepared for a Test match.”What that preparation is depends on the player to a certain extent,” he added. “I believe the players who will be involved in the IPL are experienced campaigners. They didn’t just turn up yesterday. They know what Test cricket is about and know what preparation they need.”England are only playing West Indies at home in the run-up to the Ashes after Sri Lanka pulled out when it became clear they couldn’t field their best team because of players’ IPL commitments. But there are concerns the West Indies could be similarly weakened, leading to accusations that Test cricket – which administrators continue to insist is the pinnacle of the world game – was being devalued.

Rangers: Ryan Kent could be out for a month

Steven Gerrard has provided an injury update on Rangers winger Ryan Kent…

What’s the latest?

The Light Blues manager has confirmed that the 24-year-old will be out for three to four weeks with his hamstring injury, although that could change depending on how his rehabilitation goes.

Kent hobbled off in the 2-0 defeat to Lyon in the Europa League the week before last and Gerrard has revealed that the winger could now be out for up to a month.

He told Rangers’ official Twitter channel: “Ryan Kent’s return will be roughly 3-4 weeks but that will depend a lot on the rehab process.”

Fans will be gutted

Rangers fans will surely be gutted with this news as Kent is a crucial player for the club and could now miss a number of matches.

If he is out for exactly one month from today, he will be watching on from the sidelines for four Premiership matches and two Europa League games, having already missed one league match and the League Cup win over Livingston since sustaining the knock.

This means that he could be absent for eight games in total by the team he returns to action, which is a decent chunk of the campaign, and that is why fans will be gutted by this news. Losing a key figure for this long could have an impact on results, unless Kent’s team-mates are able to fill the void left by his convalescence.

Ex-Rangers marksman Kris Boyd once lauded the 24-year-old as “phenomenal” and praised the way he controls the ball.

He said: “There’s Ryan Kent who is phenomenal – he gets you off your seat. His numbers have increased season after season. Even if the team are not at the level we saw at the start of the campaign, he is still a threat. He is so comfortable with the ball – it is like has superglue in his boots!”

Last season, Kent produced 10 goals and nine assists in 36 Premiership starts for Rangers. This shows that he has the quality to make an impact in the final third at this level on a consistent basis, which is why Gerrard will miss him badly in the coming weeks.

He is a player who can get fans off their seats with his direct style of play, as he works hard to create chances for himself and others. Therefore, Gers fans must be gutted that the wing wizard could be out for another six matches.

Rangers fans criticise Bassey display

A number of Rangers supporters have criticised Calvin Bassey’s performance in the 1-0 defeat to Sparta Prague in the Europa League.

Steven Gerrard’s side traded domestic commitments for European action on Thursday night, making the trip to the Czech Republic.

The hope was that the Gers would bounce back from their 2-0 defeat at home to Lyon in their last Europa League game, but that didn’t prove to be the case.

Prague ended up sealing a 1-0 victory thanks to David Hancko’s first-half goal, while Glen Kamara was sent-off for the visitors after the break, adding to their woes.

One player who had a tough evening was Bassey, who struggled for Rangers in a centre-back role and was arguably one of their poorest performers on the night managing just a 6.9 match rating (Sofascore).

Rangers fans react negatively to Bassey performance

The 21-year-old’s display didn’t go unnoticed on Twitter, with these Gers fans providing a damning assessment of his showing.

South African Stander insists loyalty lies with Scotland

The name Jan Stander may not mean much to South Africans, but in Scottish cricket it has caused no shortage of consternation. Stander, 27, has become the latest African-born player to represent Scotland as they prepare for next month’s crucial World Cup Q

Cricinfo staff10-Feb-2009The name Jan Stander may not mean much to South Africans, but in Scottish cricket it has caused no shortage of consternation. Stander, 27, has become the latest African-born player in the Scotland contingent as they prepare for next month’s crucial World Cup Qualifiers in Johannesburg.”It was definitely a surprise for me,” Stander told .”I did feel I had to prove a lot because I didn’t play for the A side last year. It’s a good thing there’s pressure because I think one of my strengths is thriving under it. I definitely felt it sub-consciously because a lot of people have their opinions on foreign players turning out for other countries.”Stander, who is not eligible for a British passport until 2011, joins Ryan Watson and Dewald Nel as one of Scotland’s African contingent, but the man himself has no concerns over his allegiances.”I came to Scotland as an amateur in 2003 and 2004,” said Stander, who is to marry his Scottish fiancée this summer. “If it had been my aim to come here and represent the country, then I would have made sure I stayed for 186 days of the year. Because then I would have qualified two years ago. I stayed here because I liked the country. There was nothing to go back to in South Africa. I was given the opportunity in coaching here and I’ve been loyal.”The fact that I can speak the mother tongue might help us getting some information from local people there. It will be my first tournament and the key for me is to focus on my own game and performing if I get the opportunity.”
