Southampton should have sold Long

Shane Long’s market value has plummeted in recent seasons, which suggests that Southampton should have sold him a long time ago.

The Irish forward joined Southampton from Hull City in deal worth around £12m back in 2014 and has gone on to make 227 appearances for the Saints, in which he has contributed a disappointing 35 goals and 26 assists.

His best return for Southampton in the Premier League came in the 2015/16 campaign when he managed 10 goals in the top-flight but since then his goalscoring return has been far from consistent.

In the five top-flight seasons he has featured in since then, he has managed just 12 goals, so it seems baffling that he is still at St Mary’s and it seems clear that the Saints should have sold him back when Transfermarkt valued him at £9m in 2017, as he is now valued at just £1.08m four years on.

[freshpress-quiz id=“594431”]

The 34-year-old was surprisingly handed a two-year contract extension in 2020 and after scoring no goals for Southampton since then, he now looks set to leave St Mary’s on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of this season.

It has been clear for some time now that Long is no longer good enough to be playing for Southampton in the Premier League, with the veteran forward spending the second half of last season on loan with Bournemouth in the Championship and managing just two goals.

Therefore, in retrospect, the club should have definitely looked at selling him back in 2017 when he was valued at a career-high £9m as it certainly hasn’t proven to be worthwhile keeping him at St Mary’s, especially considering he is one of the top earners in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad.

Although the 34-year-old may be a good player to have around the dressing room, he has been very disappointing in recent seasons and fans will surely be glad to see him leave at the end of this season.

Crossley thinks Burke and Middlesbrough could’ve been good fit

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, former Middlesbrough goalkeeper Mark Crossley believes Oliver Burke and his old side could have been a good match.

According to The Northern Echo, Middlesbrough were keen on doing a deal with Sheffield United for Burke, with manager Neil Warnock coming out to state that he likes the player.

Boro’s interest failed to materialise into anything, though, with Burke remaining a part of Slavisa Jokanovic’s squad.

For Crossley, had they got a deal over the line, it could have been a good move for both parties. On his former club’s interest in the United attacker, he told TT:

“He’s still a young lad and he needs to be playing football. Maybe a loan spell at Middlesbrough could’ve been the answer, which would’ve been good for Middlesbrough.

“He’s a good player, got loads of pace, loads of power. He’s definitely a talented player. He’s got pace to burn.”

Burke was not an automatic starter for United last season and has already been left out of his side’s starting XI a few times this term.

If the 24-year-old Scotland international does not manage to nail down a spot in the team before January, then perhaps a move to another Championship outfit like Middlesbrough is something he considers in the next transfer window.

A round-up of the fifth-round matches of the Premier League Tournament in Sri Lanka

Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka’s upcoming allrounder, scored a career-best 168 off 259 balls to help Colts Cricket Club crush Colombo Cricket Club by an innings at Maitland Crescent and move to the top of the Premier League Tournament Tier A table.Mathews eclipsed the season’s previous highest score – 165 by Ragama’s Ian Daniel against Tamil Union Cricket. Colts’ total of 379 did not appear to be challenging enough for hosts Colombo, whose batting line-up included three current internationals: captain Jehan Mubarak, Michael Vandort and Chamara Kapugedera. Nuwan Kulasekara, though, left them in disarray, forcing them to follow-on. Colombo managed 133 and 215 in their two innings; Kulasekara took 6 for 31 in the first. He then scalped three top-order wickets in the second innings, and left-arm spinner Sajeewa Weerakoon’s five-wicket haul ensured the game ended before tea on the third day.At Panagoda, left-arm spinner Rangana Herath, recalled to the national Test side, inspired Moors Sports Club to their first win of the season, over Sri Lanka Army Sports Club. Moors were shot out for 161, but Herath’s 6 for 28 restricted Army to 154 and he scored a half-century in the second innings to set Army a target of 273. Herath then took three wickets as Army were dismissed for 199.Ragama Cricket Club, who lost the top spot to Colts, stayed in contention by grabbing first-innings points against Chilaw Marians Cricket Club at Braybrooke Place. Replying to Chilaw Marians’ 215, Ragama reached an impressive 372, with opener Harsha Vithana scoring 113. It was better performance from the visitors in their second innings, with Mahela Udawatte, dropped from the ODI squad touring Bangladesh, hitting a power-packed 109 in their 281 for 7.In the clash between Maitland Place rivals Sinhalese Sports Club, the defending champions, and Nondescripts Cricket Club, Sinhalese secured the first innings points. Nondescripts’ were shot out for 194 by the offbreaks of Sachitra Senanayake, who took six wickets. Sinhalese finished the game at 308 for 7 in reply, with Sri Lanka Mahela Jayawardene, who had a torrid time in Zimbabwe, back in the runs with a pleasing 60.Badureliya Sports Club’s downward slide since their stunning first-round win over Nondescripts continued. They conceded first-innings points to Tamil Union at the Premadasa, scoring 203 and 233 for 7 in reply to Tamil Union’s 349 and 164 for 5 declared. In Tier B, Saracens Sports Club, Panadura Sports Club, Burgher Recreation Club and Singha Sports Club posted victories with the clear weather allowing for some closely-contested games. Saracens snatched first place in Tier B from Seeduwa Raddoluwa Cricket Club when they won the top-of-the-table clash by two wickets at Royal College Ground. In a match where fortunes swayed from one side to the other, Saracens managed to hold their nerve. Left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara took eight wickets for Saracens and lower-order batsmen Chamara Soysa and Shashrika Pussegolla contributed valuable half-centuries to enable Saracens recover from a hopeless 81 for 6 to 197, a crucial lead of 68 on the first innings. After three defeats and a draw in their first four matches of the season, Singha SC finally broke the shackles by beating Moratuwa Sports Club by nine wickets. The win, achieved inside two days, was fashioned by Singha right-arm medium-pacer Neville Liyanage, who finished with a match haul of nine wickets.Panadura SC coasted to their third win of the season with an exciting 17-run win over Police Sports Club at Panadura. After being shot out for a paltry 101 in their first innings, Panadura recovered to turn the tables on Police, who had gained who a first-innings lead of 66.Twenty-year-old Marlan Madusanka picked up his maiden ten-for when he bowled Burgher Recreation Club to a six-wicket win over Sebastianites Cricket and Athletic Club at De Soysa Stadium, Moratuwa. Madusanka returned figures of 4 for 28 and 6 for 46 as Sebastianites failed to top 150 in both innings. The Lankan Cricket Club batsmen managed to weather stormy spells from Suwanji Madanayake and Yasith de Silva on the last day as they held on for a draw against Sri Lanka Air Force Sports Club at Riffle Green. None of the batsmen could repeat the performances of the first innings as they were reduced to 99 for 7, chasing 114. The match could have swung either way, but Shashan Silva (44 not out) ensured Sri Lanka Air Force Sports Club finished the happier, bagging valuable points by virtue of the lead they managed in the previous essay.Player of the Week – Angelo Mathews
From when he first represented his country, aged 16, in the Sri Lanka Under-19 side against Pakistan in 2003, Angelo Mathews was destined to become an outstanding allrounder. Mathews, who can bat anywhere in the top order and bowl deliveries at a lively medium-pace, impressed at U-19 level and captained the national side in 2005. His first step towards selection in the senior team came during Sri Lanka A’s tour to South Africa, when he won praise from coach Chandika Hathurusingha. “What is so unique about him is that he is intelligent, picks things up very quickly, and he is quite matured for his age,” Hathurusingha said. “He seeks information and absorbs it very quickly. He should go a long way.”Mathews made it to the Sri Lanka squad for the recent tour of Zimbabwe, where he made his ODI debut. “He’s got something special,” Jayawardene said. “It would help him immensely to be part of the squad and travel with it so that the transition to the senior team would be smooth.” Mathews has been retained in the Sri Lanka one-day squad for the tri-series in Bangladesh in January.

Bruce disagreed with Charnley on transfers

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce believed that his deadline day transfer targets were ‘gettable and necessary’ but the club’s managing director Lee Charnley disagreed, according to Chris Waugh for The Athletic.

The lowdown

Newcastle made only one signing during the summer transfer window, bringing Joe Willock to St James’ Park permanently off the back of his loan spell earlier in 2021.

The Magpies were strongly linked with Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury but no deal materialised, and there were even suggestions that Bruce was trying to ‘sign players on his own’ on the final day of trading.

It has been a torrid start to the new season for Newcastle, who sit 19th with just one point on the board from their first four Premier League matches.

The latest

Waugh wrote on Twitter that Bruce ‘is fighting with those above him’ following his transfer deadline day frustration, which he articulated in an article for The Athletic.

The manager pushed for a defensive midfielder and a centre-back in the final knockings of the window, but he was told by Charnley that financial constraints and a lack of space in the squad made those deals impossible.

Bruce believes that gaps could have been opened up had Newcastle sold some ‘ageing players’ rather than awarding them new deals. He has apparently now been left in a potentially ‘awkward situation’, working with individuals that he wanted to offload.

The verdict

You can understand Bruce’s desperation in this regard. Newcastle needed to address both of those positions, as their early defensive woes have made clear.

He also has a point about the contracts. One puzzling example is Dwight Gayle, who was offered a three-year extension at the age of 31.

Even in the injury-enforced absence of Callum Wilson, you’d expect it to be Joelinton who deputises alongside Allan Saint-Maximin. Indeed, Gayle was an unused substitute at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Do they really need him to be taking up a place in the squad if Bruce has little intention of using him?

In other news, this Newcastle player came under fire for his performance at the weekend.

Ryder urges top order to fire

Jesse Ryder, the New Zealand batsman, said the team’s top five ‘has got to fire’ in the remaining three ODIs against West Indies

Jesse Ryder, the New Zealand batsman, said the team’s top five ‘has got to fire’ in the remaining three ODIs against West Indies. The home side, who drew the Tests and Twenty20 series, trail 1-0 after their defeat in Christchurch.”If one in the top five gets in and scores some runs and the rest bat around them it would be good,” Ryder said. “A few of us got starts [in Christchurch] but we just didn’t kick on.”Coach Andy Moles had given his team the same message after the loss, and asked the batsmen to follow Ramnaresh Sarwan’s example – he took charge of the chase of 158 in 28 overs with an unbeaten 67, while the best for New Zealand was Ryder’s 32.”My message to the top five was they needed to take more responsibility,” Moles said. “The opposition had one player bat all the way through and it showed if you’ve got someone you can bat around you can set targets and chase targets.”With Jacob Oram suffering from an injury niggle and unlikely to bowl even if picked in the XI, Ryder could also be in line for bowling duties in Wellington. While seven of New Zealand’s squad were sent away for domestic games, Ryder was seen sending down his medium-pacers at the Basin Reserve under the supervision of New Zealand bowling coach Vaughn Johnson.”It’d be nice to have a bowl, nice to get a couple of wickets,” Ryder said. Impressing with the ball could also have a positive impact on his prospects of an IPL contract, with the auction slated for February. “I’m not even thinking about it at the moment. If it happens it happens,” he said. “It would be a great opportunity if I got a chance to play over there. It would surely help my game playing with and against some of the greats. For the moment, though, Ryder, has another immediate goal. “It would just be good to get that first hundred under the belt. I’ve thrown it away a few times. But I’m very happy with the way things are going at the moment. It would just be good to kick on from the starts I’m getting.”Besides Sarwan, one of the stars in West Indies’ victory was wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin, who scored an unbeaten 18-ball 28. The two managed to find the 40 required in the final four overs, and Ramdin, the team’s vice-captain, was happy to overcome his disappointing run in the Tests.”There was a bit of pressure going into the one-day series knowing I didn’t perform with the bat as I wanted to in the Test series,” he said. “I was determined to go out there and enjoy the moment. Batting with Sarwan gave me the confidence to go out there and execute.”Ramdin’s batting average of 21 in both Tests and ODIs is less than his talent should be producing. “I think I’m quite capable of getting a lot more runs than that,” he added. “So hopefully I’ll continue in the one-day series and win more games for us.”He felt the close win had boosted the team’s confidence, and was hoping the team could continue the good work in the field from Christchurch. “In the Twenty20 games we put down a couple of catches that cost us the game. We’re working on it and in the last game that was evident because we took a couple of catches that got rid of some of their key batsmen.”Both teams have guys who are capable of hitting a lot of boundaries so if you get those players out in the first 15 overs and shut down the runs it will be good.”
