Brendan Nash, the Australian-born batsman, has capped off a remarkable year by being named in West Indies’ 14-man squad for next week’s ODI tri-series in Canada. As expected, the side will be led by Chris Gayle after he withdrew his resignation as captain. The squad also includes the uncapped Guyana middle-order batsman Leon Johnson, while the wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh is set for his first international action in nearly two years having replaced Denesh Ramdin. The most fascinating selection is that of Nash, 30, who relocated to the Caribbean a year ago.Nash was born in Western Australia and played first-class cricket for Queensland for seven seasons before losing his state contract last June. He decided to try his luck in Jamaica, which his father Paul had represented in swimming at the Olympic Games, and had a successful first campaign that ended with a century in Jamaica’s final victory.Johnson, 21, also had a productive Carib Beer Series and despite failing to make a century, he was consistent enough to average 42.70 from six games. Nash and Johnson could be competing for a middle-order place with Shawn Findlay, who was rewarded after making a strong start to his international career against Australia.Shivnarine Chanderpaul was rested and will rejoin the squad for the Champions Trophy, while Dwayne Bravo was unavailable due to an ankle injury. West Indies play Bermuda next Wednesday and Canada two days later, with the tri-series final to be held on August 24.West Indies squad Chris Gayle (capt), Xavier Marshall, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Brendan Nash, Shawn Findlay, Leon Johnson, Carlton Baugh (wk), Dave Mohammed, Nikita Miller, Jerome Taylor, Daren Powell, Kemar Roach, Fidel Edwards.

Romano drops major Harry Kane update

Another twist has emerged in the Harry Kane saga this week…

What’s the word?

The Tottenham striker may have returned to Hotspur Way ahead of the new Premier League season earlier this week but he is still subject to interest from defending champions Manchester City, who have already seen a £100m bid rejected this transfer window.

It appears that Pep Guardiola’s side are not ready to give up just yet, however. According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Citizens are preparing to launch a second bid which is a lot closer to chairman Daniel Levy’s reported valuation of the England international.

He tweeted:

“Manchester City are preparing their new bid for Harry Kane around €150m and would also include add-ons if necessary to convince Spurs.

“Tottenham still hope to keep Kane but Man City are not giving up – bid will be ready.

“Exclusive story earlier today, confirmed.”

Another twist in the tale

With a little over two weeks to go before deadline day, this latest development merely presents a fresh twist in the tale, as earlier this week the ever-reliable Alasdair Gold at football.london revealed that some sources hinted that Kane could make an “incredible” U-turn to stay at the club.

That would even see him sign a new deal, despite currently being under contract until 2024 as their top earner on a reported £200k-per-week.

It now seems that City are prepared to double their summer spending, having brought in Jack Grealish for a record-breaking £100m earlier this month.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-team-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours, gossip and much more!”]

What makes this even more interesting is the fact that these two teams go head-to-head on Sunday to kickstart their 2021/22 campaigns – whether Kane will be involved remains to be seen but it would not be a surprise to see some sort of resolution after full-time.

Romano’s claim is also likely to leave many around North London absolutely livid. In a survey conducted by football.london recently, 83% of Spurs fans questioned believed the England international had tarnished his reputation as a Tottenham Hotspur legend.

Furthermore, 54% of those polled were either unsure or certain that Kane would no longer be a fan favourite at the club, which is rather damning considering that the talisman has been a regularly prolific source of goals for many, many seasons.

As relayed by This is Futbol, some of the Lilywhites faithful have described the 28-year-old’s desire to leave as “disrespectful,” “unprofessional,” and “incredibly disappointing.”

This saga is set to go right down to the wire, and with the new season getting underway, it won’t leave many in N17 happy, particularly the fans who will undoubtedly be left even more fuming by this update.

Ryder in New Zealand Test squad

Jesse Ryder is in line for a possible Test debut after earning a call-up into the 15-man New Zealand squad for their two-Test tour of Bangladesh

Jesse Ryder is in line for a possible Test debut after earning a call-up into the 15-man New Zealand squad for their two-Test tour of Bangladesh. However, there was no place for James Marshall, Peter Fulton or Michael Mason, all of whom were in the group that toured England this year.Aaron Redmond retained his place in the Test squad despite the disappointment of making only 54 from his six innings in England, where he made his debut. But the removal of Marshall and Fulton from the list of top-order options means Ryder has every chance to add a Test cap to his five ODI appearances. It is a major vote of confidence in Ryder, who badly hurt his hand after punching a window in a local bar in a late-night incident in February. Ryder has also been starved of first-class cricket recently and played only three State Championship games for Wellington last season, but the selectors were impressed when he captained New Zealand to the Emerging Players title in Australia in July. The Bangladesh tour starts with three one-day internationals and Mark Gillespie and Scott Styris have been named only for the limited-overs portion. In the lead-up to the first Test, which begins on October 17, that pair will fly home and the squad will be joined by the Test specialists Redmond and Iain O’Brien.Chris Martin has been included in the 15-man ODI squad after being largely pigeon-holed as a Test player in recent times. The squad will leave a few days earlier than planned, on September 30, and Dion Nash, one of the selectors, stressed it would not be an easy trip.”The team will have the challenge of competitive cricket in sub-continent conditions after the break enforced by the postponement of the Champions Trophy,” Nash said. “Bangladesh will provide a stern test going into another international season, which offers the Black Caps the chance to build on this year’s home and away series against England.”Test squad Jamie How, Aaron Redmond, Ross Taylor, Daniel Flynn, Jesse Ryder, Jacob Oram, Brendon McCullum (wk), Gareth Hopkins (wk), Grant Elliott, Daniel Vettori (capt), Kyle Mills, Tim Southee, Iain O’Brien, Jeetan Patel, Chris Martin.ODI squad Jamie How, Brendon McCullum (wk), Scott Styris, Ross Taylor, Daniel Flynn, Jesse Ryder, Jacob Oram, Gareth Hopkins (wk), Grant Elliott, Daniel Vettori (capt), Kyle Mills, Tim Southee, Mark Gillespie, Jeetan Patel, Chris Martin.

Exclusive: Marcus Bent says Romelu Lukaku is overrated following Chelsea move

Former Premier League striker Marcus Bent has exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that Romelu Lukaku is overrated – and Chelsea could have spent their money better elsewhere.

Almost exactly seven years after he left the Blues for Everton, the Belgian frontman made a sensational return when he secured his move back to Stamford Bridge in a £97.5m deal from Inter Milan.

Following a tricky period at Manchester United when he failed to live up to another monumental transfer fee, Lukaku rediscovered his goalscoring touch in Italy, netting 47 league goals across his two seasons to help Inter win Serie A for the first time in 11 years.

But the pressure won’t get any easier upon his return to Chelsea, with Lukaku now tasked with being the man to score the goals that Timo Werner couldn’t last term to fire Thomas Tuchel’s men to their sixth Premier League title this season.

Lukaku’s goals for Inter took his career tally past the 250-goal mark in club football, 113 of which have come in England.

However, Bent told The Transfer Tavern that he’s still unconvinced by the 28-year-old Belgian:

“Personally, I’m not a big fan of Lukaku. I think he’s quite weak in certain situations, I think he’s overrated. I don’t think he can hold the ball up. Yeah, he can score a goal, but I think he’s overrated.

“He’s playing in a side that have good players, but think Chelsea could have gone for someone else with the money they paid.”

Crystal Palace: Weston McKennie links emerge

Crystal Palace and Aston Villa have seemingly made cash offers for Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie, according to Tuttosport, cited by MondoBiancoNero.com.

The Lowdown: Palace after a midfielder

Patrick Vieira has had a tough start to life as Palace boss and is yet to see his side score in three competitive games.

The Eagles board want to bring in two forwards and a midfielder before the deadline, with links to Watford’s Will Hughes gathering pace over the weekend.

However, it now seems as if Palace, along with Villa, could be in for McKennie, hailed as ‘intelligent’ last year by Fabio Paratici, now of Spurs.

The Latest: Wednesday report

According to Tuttosport, cited by MondoBiancoNero.com, Juventus would prefer cash for McKennie, with Tottenham and Paratici looking at swap deals.

The report then claims that cash is an ‘element offered by less famous clubs such as Crystal Palace and Aston Villa’, possibly hinting that the two clubs have actually launched bids for the USA international, although that has not been confirmed by any English sources.

The Verdict: Biggest signing of the summer?

Fabrizio Romano has suggested it would take an “important bid” of more than €25/30m for the 5 foot 8 midfielder, so Palace may need to make the midfielder their most expensive signing of the summer – surpassing the £21m move for Marc Guehi earlier in the window.

It could be worth it though, especially with McKennie at the peak of his powers with a career-high £22.5m Transfermarkt valuation.

He can also play as a central, defensive or right-midfielder, so would bring plenty of versatility to Vieira’s midfield options, adding depth and quality while killing multiple birds with one stone.

However, it seems as if Palace may have to outbid Villa, which could be an issue, especially as Dean Smith’s side have already spent £95m this summer.

Struggling Cosgrove still in the mix

South Australia have given up on placing weight and fitness restrictions on Mark Cosgrove but the batsman is still in danger of missing out on the state’s opening games due to form concerns

South Australia have given up on placing weight and fitness restrictions on Mark Cosgrove but the batsman is still in danger of missing out on the state’s opening games due to form concerns. Cosgrove, the most recent South Australia batsman to play for Australia, was dropped from the first-class team towards the end of last season.Despite working solidly on his game and his fitness during the off-season, he was not chosen in a 16-man squad that played a series of practice matches in Queensland during the past week. Jamie Cox, South Australia’s high performance manager, said Cosgrove needed to find form but remained in the mix for the Redbacks’ first Sheffield Shield and FR Cup games of the summer.”We want Mark back playing and playing well, we know that he’s a very fine player,” Cox told . “But Mark’s currency is runs and last year he did not score a hundred in any form of the game and for a bloke of Mark’s talent that was seen as not quite good enough.”We know Mark is an exceptional talent and he will be judged exactly the same way as every other player is judged when it comes to picking teams. From his perspective he missed the opportunity to get some practice up north. His preparation may be affected but I know the selectors have him firmly in mind for any teams that may be picked within the next few days.”Cosgrove played three one-day internationals in 2006 – he was only 21 when he made his debut – and was viewed as a potential future regular in the Australia setup. However, keeping trim has been an ongoing battle for him, as has maintaining the high batting standards he set early in his career.South Australia begin the season with a one-day game against Victoria in Adelaide on Sunday followed by a Sheffield Shield match also against the Bushrangers. Younis Khan, their star recruit, will be unavailable due to his commitments with Pakistan, but the Redbacks will be boosted by the return of Shaun Tait after his self-enforced break from the game.”To get him back at his best would solve an enormous amount of anyone’s woes,” Cox said. “He’s not only a premier fast bowler in this team, he’s one of the heartbeats, one of the real soul brothers of the team that the guys love to play around.”
