Pakistan have stuck largely with the tried and tested in a 16-man squad for what will effectively be their toughest assignment of the year so far, the tri-series in Bangladesh involving India as the third side.Disappointingly perhaps, of the many new faces trialled against Zimbabwe and Bangladesh earlier this year, only opener Nasir Jamshed and left-arm bowler Wahab Riaz find space on the plane to Dhaka.Promising youngsters, such as openers Khurram Manzoor and Khalid Latif, fast bowler Sohail Khan and wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed have been left behind. The last three are on the reserves list and will instead form part of a camp in Lahore for a pool of players to be considered for the Asia Cup and the ICC Champions Trophy later in the year. The trio, in particular Sohail, remain in contention for the Asia Cup, say the selectors..”It is the best available team and a well-balanced squad,” Salahuddin Ahmed, chief selector, told Cricinfo. “We are aiming for some continuity in selection and that shows with the selection of players such as Nasir Jamshed and Wahab Riaz.”The team was chosen after extensive discussions between the selection committee and Shoaib Malik, the Pakistan captain. The coach Geoff Lawson, however, wasn’t present, having not arrived in time from Sydney. Lawson has had, at times, a testy relationship with the selection committee and his absence, it is believed, has not gone down particularly well with the PCB.Though the squad was largely agreed upon, certain positions and players will be under the scanner during the tri-series, with the selectors keen to plan ahead for the Asia Cup and ICC Champions Trophy later in the year.It is learnt that Kamran Akmal will open the innings with Salman Butt, a combination that Malik has publicly backed. But it has also been made clear, according to one of the selectors, that this is the last chance for Akmal to make an impact as an opener and failure could mean ouster from the team.Shahid Afridi’s form with the bat will also come under scrutiny during the tournament, one source close to the meeting suggesting that the captain was keen on Mansoor Amjad replacing the veteran all-rounder.Bazid Khan, who made a fifty in his last ODI against Bangladesh is retained in the squad, as is Naumanullah, the middle-order batsman who made his debut against Bangladesh in the last ODI of the series in Karachi. Naumanullah has been among Pakistan’s leading domestic run-scorers in the last five seasons, though at 32, an international debut appeared to have passed him by. Aston Villa will not be trying to sign Norwich City midfielder Todd Cantwell this summer, according to The Athletic’s Michael Bailey.

As to be expected, a number of Villa supporters were quick to share their thoughts on the transfer news via social media.

Villa were expected to make their move for the Canaries ace after Jack Grealish joined Manchester City in a deal worth £100m.

Talks for Cantwell were believed to be underway between the clubs, with Villa keen to make the 23-year-old their fourth big-money signing of the summer after moves for Emiliano Buendia, Leon Bailey and Danny Ings, and a fee of up to £50m was being mooted in some quarters.

However, according to Bailey, Norwich’s correspondent for The Athletic, Villa won’t be coming in for the England under-21 international during the summer window. Bailey didn’t add too much detail as to why, but it seems as if Villa will now move on to alternative Cantwell targets to replace Grealish.

The Canaries ace featured alongside Buendia as Daniel Farke’s side won the Championship title last term, but the Argentine – who cost the Villans £33m – managed nine more goals and 10 more assists than Cantwell in that campaign, which suggests that the Englishman wouldn’t be an upgrade despite a higher fee being mooted for him.

O Vasco foi campeão da Taça Guanabara no último domingo ao vencer o Fluminense por 1 a 0. Dudu diz que a conquista dá uma motivação a mais para o time para buscar outras conquistas, como a Copa do Brasil da categoria. No primeiro jogo das quartas de final, o Vasco derrotou o Vitória por 2 a 1, na última quarta-feira, em São Januário.

Though theselectors had already sent a list of 30 names, four players require theapproval of a board committee as they are not on the list of 26 playerswith central contracts or retainerships. Confusion over the eligibility ofShoaib Akhtar, who is on the list, has also caused the delay.The announcement was meant to be made yesterday in accordance with ICCdeadlines, but is now going to be made on Monday, for which the ICC hasgranted clearance. “We have a policy or a vision for the first year toconcentrate mostly on the 26 players we are paying a monthly salary orretainer to,” Shafqat Naghmi, chief operating officer, told Cricinfo.”This pool numbers 26 and we needed 30,” he added. “We had also decidedthat if any extraordinary talent outside this pool emerges, then we havemen like Mudassar Nazar, Aaqib Javed and Haroon Rasheed at the academy whospot this talent. So anytime selectors pick outside this 26, a committeeheaded by Zakir Khan needs to just approve that these are the guys weshould pick. That was scheduled for this morning but couldn’t happen andwill now happen on Monday.”The other issue that should be resolved on Monday is that of Shoaib. It islearnt that Shoaib’s inclusion in the list was even approved by NasimAshraf, the board chairman, but as the fast bowler has yet to clear the Rs7 million fine, he cannot be named in any list of probables. Shoaib wasbanned for five years by the board in April for various acts of indiscipline.He appealed against the ban to an appellate tribunal which reduced it to 18 months but imposed a fine of seven million rupees on him. The bowler then filed a petition to the Lahore High Court against the ban and finelast month. The court suspended the ban but refused to clear the fineuntil the case is taken up for regular hearing in September. The board’slegal opinion suggests that Shoaib will become eligible after he pays thefine.”We got the written court order today,” Naghmi said. “They suspended theban but not the fine. We have asked our lawyer whether Shoaib becomeseligible after paying the fine and the lawyer believes that is the case.We’ve sent a letter to Shoaib to pay the fine by Monday.”The board, it is believed however, is willing to be flexible on the issueof payment. It is unlikely that Shoaib will miss out on inclusion becauseof non-payment and the board might give him time till the announcement of thefinal 15 to pay off the fine.As well as Shoaib, Mohammad Asif has also been included in the 30-man listthough his final status is also subject to the findings of a PCB committeeon his recent detention in Dubai. The fast bowler was held back at Dubai airport for 19 days on his way back from India, allegedly after he was caught with a recreational drug by airport authorities.The three-man committee, which includes Naghmi, Zakir and Nadeem Akram,will begin its work from Monday, after receiving documents related to thecase from Dubai.

Pakistan’s chances of hosting the Champions Trophy in September have been pegged at “50-50″ by an official who attended the ICC’s security briefing in Dubai on Sunday. The meeting was attended by board officials of the eight participating countries, broadcast executives, and players’ association representatives.The ICC board will now take a final decision over the next 72 hours after its members discuss the issue over the phone, the official said. The ICC board, while taking a final decision, will also consider a report on Sunday’s security briefing.”The briefing was detailed and comprehensive and it looks 50-50 at the moment for Pakistan,” the official told Cricinfo. “The players of four countries, Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa, have expressed some reservations over the security climate in Pakistan, and I would expect their boards to back them.”Reports in British newspapers suggest that the ECB has already told its players that it cannot guarantee their safety in the light of recent bombings in Karachi and Islamabad.Asked whether Sunday’s meeting discussed alternate venues for the tournament, the official said, “That topic was not touched upon at all in this meeting. That is for the ICC board to discuss.” South Africa has been projected as the possible alternate host, in case the ICC board decides against Pakistan, after Sri Lanka, the original stand-by venue, was found to have significant security concerns of its own.The ICC said in an official statement that “until or unless the board decides otherwise, the tournament will proceed in Pakistan.” Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, later told reporters that Sri Lanka remains the alternate venue.Lorgat said that the briefing by the ICC’s security consultants stressed “great satisfaction” at the security measures in place during the Asia Cup but added: “If it was up to the player representatives, they would prefer not to be in Pakistan. They have concerns because no guarantee on safety and security can be given by the PCB, the ICC or the security consultants. We can do everything in our power to secure and safeguard officials, but we can never issue guarantees.”The ICC statement said, “While there was recognition the PCB had gone to great lengths to provide a high level of security during the Asia Cup and would do so again during the ICC Champions Trophy, concerns were expressed about the potential for threats beyond the PCB’s control.”One compromise being touted is to move matches away from Karachi, considered the most risky destination, to Lahore and Rawalpindi.

Former Everton defender Michael Ball believes that Andros Townsend and Dominic Calvert-Lewin can form a good partnership for the Toffees in the upcoming season.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin started last season in fine form, scoring in each of Everton’s first five Premier League matches, including a hat-trick in the club’s second match against West Bromwich Albion.

The striker ended the season with 21 goals in all competitions and won the club’s Player of the Season award for his fine form.

Townsend signed a two-year deal at Goodison Park and is reunited with new Everton manager Rafa Benitez, who he had previously played under at Newcastle United.

Ball believes that Calvert-Lewin and new signing Andros Townsend can form a good partnership, telling Football FanCast: “Andros with his stats at Crystal Palace, yes they played a different system but his personal stats of getting the balls in the box early you would hope would be perfect for whoever is up front for Everton, whether its DCL or whoever comes in.

“DCL early on last season was thriving on crosses, early crosses coming in and he was scoring headers and getting across the defenders with one touch finishes early on last season and that seemed to dwindle as the season went on. So, with Andros outside, DCL will know what he will be trying to do, getting the ball in the box very, very early and hopefully that will get DCL into double figures again next season.”

Townsend has 48 goals and 72 assists throughout his career and so could prove to be vital for Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring goals next season. In his 16 Premier League goals last season, Calvert-Lewin scored seven with his head, showing that if he can get the service from out wide, he will be an aerial threat in the penalty area.
