Most Liverpool supporters would be forgiven if they’d forgotten that goalkeeper Danny Ward briefly had a career at Anfield.

Signed from Wrexham as a prodigy in January 2012, the now 12-time Welsh stopper was farmed out on three separate loan deals, that number ironically being the same amount of first-team Reds’ appearances that he received.

It was a surprise then, to see Premier League rivals Leicester City fork out a reported £12.5m to take him to the King Power Stadium in 2018, emotions that would potentially have been stirred again with the Foxes’ stopper having recently agreed a new four-year deal with the East-Midlands outfit.

The deal to sell Ward looks like another stroke of genius from Michael Edwards.

Just a few months before his sale to Leicester, Ward was rated at just £2.25m so for Liverpool to even rake in the fee that they did for the goalkeeper was a remarkable move.

Whilst his valuation has fluctuated somewhat since, moving to £9m shortly after his arrival at Leicester, it now sits at less than half of what the Foxes paid for him – £5.4m.

Considering that he has been somewhat starved of action so far, having made just 14 appearances for the club in all competitions, it could be argued that Leicester have certainly not received value for money.

It is undeniable that if the Reds were looking to sell Ward – who earns £20k per week at the King Power Stadium – in the current market, they would simply not be able to demand such a fee for his signature.

Whilst it could have been argued that the Welshman might have been an able deputy to current Reds’ stopper Alisson, with Jurgen Klopp in the past labelling him as “fantastic”, the opportunity to rake in such an amount was an opportunity not to be missed by Liverpool and Edwards pulled off another masterstroke.

وواصل: “سعيد جدًا للاعبين لأنهم كانوا رجالًا، وكنت أتمنى أن أكون متواجدًا مع الأهلي أمام مونتيري، عندما كنت أشاهد المباراة كنت أشعر أني ألعب مع كل هجمة”.

وأردف: “أبارك للجهاز الفني على الفوز، وبالأخص رامي رابيعة تحمل الكثير جدًا وأيضًا محمد هاني، والكل يعلم أن كل من يرتدي قميص الأهلي يحقق بطولات ودائمًا يلعب على الانتصارات”.

واستكمل: “كنت أعلم قبل المباراة اننا سنحقق الفوز على مونتيري”.

واستطرد: “أقول للاعبي منتخب مصر أنكم أديتم ما عليكم وأكثر في ظل الأجواء والظروف التي حدثت في الكاميرون ورغم ذلك تصلون للنهائي”.

وعن وجود عروض احتراف خارجية، واصل: “زيزو لاعبًا في الزمالك وتعاقده لمدة 3 سنوات، ونحن تحت أمر النادي، إذا رأى المسؤولين أن هناك عرض يليق به سيرحل من بوابة النادي، وإذا كان رحيله سيسبب فجوة فسيستمر”.

وأتم اللاعب متحدثًا عن والده: “والدي كان له تأثيرًا في تجديد تعاقدي مع نادي الزمالك”.

واستأنف: “والدي مؤثر في حياتي بشكل كبير جدًا، لأن تفكيري ليس أفضل شيء، وتوجد قرارات إذا ما كان والدي متواجدًا فيها لتغيرت أمورًا كثيرة”.

Atlético-MG e Juventude têm um encontro marcado para às 19h30 desta quarta-feira, válido pela fase de volta das quartas-de-final da Copa do Brasil, no Alfredo Jaconi, em Caxias do Sul(RS). Na partida de ida, no Mineirão, o Atlético venceu por 1 a 0, gol de Lucas Pratto.

Newcastle United have approached Benfica to sound out the possibility of a move for 21-year-old left-back Nuno Tavares this summer, according to Portuguese outlet Record.

If the signals are positive, the report claimed that Newcastle could soon progress to the bidding stage, with Burnley and Napoli also named as interested parties.

Tavares has an €88m (£76m) release clause in his contract at the Estadio da Luz but the club are apparently open to a €30m (£25.9m) sale.

How has Nuno Tavares done at Benfica this season?

The Portuguese defender should be viewed as a star of the future. He has been eased into the Benfica first team, starting only five Liga NOS matches this season and making a further six appearances off the bench.

He was also handed a five-minute runout in the second leg of their Europa League defeat to Arsenal last month.

According to WhoScored, Tavares excels at crossing, chance creation and blocking the ball.

He has been labelled ‘one of the fastest players in the whole Portuguese league’ and is tipped to go on to become one of the best in Europe (via talkSPORT).

Intriguingly, Benfica have been linked with Wolves’ Ruben Vinagre, who is only a year older than Tavares. If they can strike that deal, then they may not stand in his way.

Transfer Tavern verdict

Tavares looks an excellent prospect, and £25.9m sounds like a more than reasonable fee. However, it’s difficult to see Newcastle shelling out that much on a left-back, particularly if Mike Ashley remains in his post.

A return for Jetro Willems, valued at a mere £2.7m by Transfermarkt, might be more realistic given the soundbytes of austerity in recent months surrounding Newcastle’s transfer budget.

Manchester City’s hopes of signing Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish have seemingly been handed a huge boost, with Dean Smith’s side reportedly looking to sign Norwich City winger Todd Cantwell as his replacement.

According to the Daily Mail, the Villans are weighing up a move for Cantwell, which could open the door for Grealish to make the switch to the Etihad, with Manchester City expected to bid for the England international.

City have regularly been linked with Grealish in recent months as he continues to dazzle for the Birmingham-based club in the top-flight.

So far this season, the 25-year-old has contributed six goals and 10 assists in 22 Premier League appearances, which has helped him earn a superb 7.73 average rating.

This ranks him ahead of every single Manchester City player this season, with only Harry Kane rated higher of those playing in the Premier League, which emphasises just how impressive Grealish has been for Villa.

The creative winger signed a new five-year deal with Smith’s side ahead of the 2020/21 campaign and was reportedly valued at £100m by the Villa Park outfit, which made a City move for him seem unlikely.

However, the fact that they have begun to look for replacements for the captain suggests that he is keen to depart this summer, with City seemingly in pole position to sign him.

Earlier in the season, with the duo battling for a spot in Gareth Southgate’s England side, Mason Mount was full of praise for Grealish, saying:

“I look at the way he’s been playing this season, he’s been unbelievable.”

Whilst he won’t come cheap, his performances with Villa this season have marked him out as one of the best players in the Premier League, so there is no doubt that he would be a superb addition to Guardiola’s side.

If City don’t pay the fee, then you feel like another top club could be easily convinced to shell out, so after the news that Villa have already begun looking for a replacement, City’s sporting director Txiki Begiristain should do everything he can to bring him to the Etihad this summer.
