Total Duds: Manchester United’s Fred has contributed precious little to justify his £52m transfer fee

This article forms part of our Total Duds feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at a player who has disappointed since being signed, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to illustrate how ill-judged the transfer decision has been.

Manchester United did not hang around when it came to their summer 2018 transfer activity. The first week in June hadn’t even been completed when the club announced the signing of Brazilian midfielder Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk for £52m plus bonuses, as reported by Sky Sports.

The deal made him the Red Devils’ third-most expensive player at the time and came off the back of him being named in Brazil’s squad for the World Cup in Russia, although he did not get a game in the tournament.

Jose Mourinho, the manager who brought him to Old Trafford, said at the time of the signing: “Fred will complement our other midfielders’ qualities, which we need; his creative brain and passing vision will give us another dimension to our game.” [via Sky Sports]

Fred started United’s first three Premier League games of the 2018/19 season but would then endure several months of dipping in and out of the line-up, while his goal in a 1-1 draw against Wolves early in the campaign would be the only one he’d score all season.

Wolves also provided the opposition for his only assist of 2018/19 and, despite getting a sustained run of games in the final third of the campaign, his first year in England ended with just 13 Premier League starts – a rather subdued return for a player who cost £52m the previous summer.

There weren’t many signs of the “creative brain and passing vision” of which Mourinho spoke in June 2018. Fred averaged 45.2 passes and just 0.7 key passes per game last season, with a passing accuracy of 86.3%. Six United players had a better passing success rate, while nine played more key passes per game. [via WhoScored]

Some former Old Trafford stalwarts did not hold back in their assessment of the Brazil midfielder in his first season at the club.

Speaking after a 3-1 defeat to Manchester City last November, Gary Neville said on his Sky Sports podcast: “Does he change a game? Does it look like he’s going to defend your goal? Does it look like he’s going to connect back-to-front? At this moment in time, no.” [via Daily Mail]

After United again lost to their neighbours in April, Roy Keane fumed at Fred on Sky Sports [via The Independent] over letting Raheem Sterling run free of him for one of City’s goals, saying: “That’s cheating, what he’s done is cheating, letting the guy run off him.”

Things have not improved for the 26-year-old in the first few weeks of this season. He has started only one of United’s first eight Premier League games of the campaign, when he was booked inside three minutes in the recent defeat at Newcastle United. [via TransferMarkt]

Even allowing for his lack of minutes in the league, that he is 11th in the list of average passes per game in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad with 35.3 is damning for a midfielder who cost £52m, and he has continued to be hammered by pundits for his ineffective performances.

Neville said on Sky Sports after the 1-1 draw against Arsenal two weeks ago that “I’ve not seen anything in the 12 months that he’s been here to justify the price tag.” [via Daily Mail]

After United drew with AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League, Michael Owen said on BT Sport [via Daily Mail]: “He’s just a moderate player, isn’t he? That’s the bottom line. What can you say? We were discussing what’s his best position? I probably think it’s a six, Owen [Hargreaves] thinks it’s an eight, but then once you start arguing about it, you think is he that good? He can’t do either role that well and he cost, what, £50m?”

For an outlay of £52m the summer before last, Fred has paid back Manchester United with one goal and two assists in 32 appearances, having been pilloried by several former players at the club. That level of output has simply not justified the vast sum of money paid to him and his frequent absence from the starting line-up is a sign that Solskjaer doesn’t have much faith in him to turn things around.

Man Utd fans can’t believe they missed out on Mauro Icardi this summer

For all of Manchester United’s goal-scoring troubles this season – they have scored just ten times in the Premier League – things could have been oh-so-different had the summer turned out a different way.

Inter’s pursuit of Romelu Lukaku was long and protracted, and it appeared at one stage that their Italian rivals Juventus were about to pounce. In the end, the Nerazzurri got their man, but United could very well have profited with more than just the money they received for the Belgium international.

Reports had claimed Antonio Conte’s side were willing to give up Mauro Icardi as part of the deal to sign the 26-year-old, but it was then suggested the Red Devils had no interest in such a proposition.

Icardi eventually joined French giants PSG later in the summer, and has enjoyed a fine start to life in Paris, scoring twice in the win over Club Brugge in the Champions League on Tuesday.

After seeing the Argentine’s display, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the man that was linked to them.

Many Red Devils supporters insisted they should have done everything in their power to sign the 5 foot 11 star, with one fan in particular blaming Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for not making it happen.

Birmingham defender Kristian Pedersen is skating on thin ice

Mistakes. They’re something that can sometimes be mental, and they can sometimes be physical.

Regardless of how they happen they can sometimes be costly, and given that all bar three of Birmingham’s results this season have been settled by just the one goal, they can often decide the outcome of the match.

We have discussed previously on FFC that there have been mistakes creeping into the game of goalkeeper Lee Camp, and that his displays could end up costing the Blues more points as the season goes on.

Therefore, it’s only fair that we place the same sort of criticism that Camp gets on someone like Blues defender Kristian Pedersen.

His most recent mistake came in last weekend’s game against Luton Town when his sliced pass left Ivan Sunjic in all kinds of trouble and allowed the visitors to score.

The left-back had a similar incident in the game away to Derby County a few weeks back too. His slip allowed the Rams to break forward and score their second in a game that finished 3-2 to the home side.

He may the second-highest rated player in the team this season, via WhoScored, but at the same time if he keeps gifting goals to the opposition, you have to question if it is time for the Blues to look at finding a replacement.

Whether it be in the transfer market or within the squad is open for debate.

So far this season he has managed to keep hold of his place predominantly because he didn’t have any challenges to his role, with both Cheick Keita and Jonathan Grounds having lengthy set-backs through injuries.

However, in the latest injury update ahead of the game with Luton, it would appear as though both men are ready and available for selection.

So Pedersen needs to start keeping his eyes open on the pitch.

It’s all well and good scoring goals at one end, as he did against Luton and on the opening day of the season against Brentford, but if he keeps being responsible for goals at the other, he may well find himself watching from the bench sooner rather than later.

Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher will benefit from Jurgen Klopp’s show of faith

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Jurgen Klopp’s decision to renew his faith in Caoimhin Kelleher paid off against Arsenal as the goalkeeper produced a tie-winning moment in the penalty shootout.

On the chalkboard

The 20-year-old got the nod to start ahead of Adrian, which surprised fans, and he now looks to be Liverpool’s number one choice in the League Cup after starting the first two fixtures in the competition.

It was a call that appeared to backfire early on in the game as the Northern Ireland U21 international was at fault for two of the visitors’ goals, twice palming a shot into the path of an opposition player to score from the rebound.

That could have damaged his confidence, and indeed he won’t be happy to concede five goals, but he turned things around following the full-time whistle and his save from Dani Ceballos’ penalty will do him the world of good.

To produce such a huge moment in front of the Kop at his age would have been a dream come true, and the confidence he should take from this will be massive, and could serve him well in the future.

Klopp deserves credit as it would have been an easy choice to go with Adrian given the form he had shown previously this season.

Big learning curve

Typically the best way for youngsters to develop is by getting a taste of the action.

Kelleher made sloppy errors against Arsenal but he should come out on the other side as a better player for it.

At youth level he may not have been punished, as the quick-thinking of the Arsenal forwards is likely a step-up from what he is accustomed to in Premier League 2, and thus it is less of a concern if Kelleher doesn’t palm the ball away properly when playing for the U23s.

He also showed a weakness in Arsenal’s fourth goal, lacking anticipation to reach James Milner’s poor backpass, but that slight blunder should stimulate an improvement in his reading of the game and concentration.

Despite the faults, he will be encouraged by playing with and learning from more experienced defenders like Milner and Joe Gomez.

Above all though is the penalty save, and that moment under the Anfield lights should give him a real boost as well as the determination to impress again.

Liverpool’s tactical switch gives Klopp a proven plan B

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Liverpool prevailed against Genk in the Champions League on Tuesday, winning 2-1 thanks to goals from Georginio Wijnaldum and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Their tactical switch shows Jurgen Klopp has a plan B up his sleeve should he need it.

On the chalkboard

The Reds were dominant against the Belgian side, having 27 shots at goal and eight on target compared to six and three respectively.

With Manchester City coming up at the weekend, Klopp rotated his side, making six changes to the team that beat Aston Villa last Saturday. There was a tactical switch, as well.

False 9

If you looked at the match reports from this game, you would have seen Oxlade-Chamberlain in the striker position and would probably have asked yourself what the former Borussia Dortmund manager was up to?

However, it was part of the 52-year-old’s cunning scheme.

Watch Liverpool Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The 33-time England international actually played in a false nine position as the heatmap below shows. As he is not a natural striker, it made more sense for him to take up an overall deeper role.

As such, this forced the midfield to be more proactive going forwards. You can see from the two heatmaps below the effect it had on their offensive play.

The first, against Aston Villa, shows Jordan Henderson, Adam Lallana and Wijnaldum sitting further back in the midfield. On Tuesday, though, the trio of the latter, Fabinho and Naby Keita were more advanced, and it paid dividends as the Netherlands international opened the scoring from inside the six-yard box.

Wijnaldum, who moved to Anfield from Newcastle in 2016 for £25m, has played for Liverpool mainly in central midfield, but it was his performances as either a left-midfielder or an attacking midfielder for PSV and the Toon that caught the six-time European champions’ eye. His offensive contribution has been restricted on Merseyside, though – he has scored just four more goals for the Reds than he did in 116 less games for the north-east outfit.

Here, however, a false nine allowed him to be more adventurous, and the goal he scored was proof of that. Whilst Roberto Firmino will continue to play as the main forward – and rightly so, considering Klopp and co have won 1o of their first 11 Premier League games with him in the side – here is a plan B that could be used to great effect if needed.
