According to Goal, Leeds United are making progress over an initial £7m deal for Liverpool winger Ryan Kent, but spending that amount on the 22-year-old would be ultimately puzzling.

What’s the word, then?

Goal reports that the wide man has been a long-term target for Whites manager Marcelo Bielsa, who is keen to strengthen his side’s attack ahead of another gruelling Championship campaign.

Goal say that talks are going well over a £7m deal, which could rise to £10m with add-ons.

Meanwhile, The Daily Record report that discussions were underway between the two clubs before the ink had even dried on Kemar Roofe’s move to Anderlecht, with Bielsa confident that a deal would be done before the 5pm deadline on Thursday.

Puzzling

While it is obviously great that Leeds are willing to spend £7m on a new signing given all of their additions this summer have been loans – albeit Helder Costa’s will turn into a £15m permament deal next summer – it is a little confusing.

Roofe’s departure has left the Yorkshire outfit with one senior striker in Patrick Bamford, with youngsters Ryan Edmondson and Kun Temenuzkhov as back up.

Meanwhile, Pontus Jansson left for Brentford and has so far been replaced by Ben White, who made his Championship debut at the weekend.

Leeds are clearly lacking depth and quality in those two positions, which makes it strange that they are willing to spend big on a player in a position where they have plenty of depth.

Costa, Jack Harrison, Ezgjan Alioski, Jack Clarke, Stuart Dallas and Pablo Hernandez can all play on the flanks, so surely it would make more sense to use the £7m in an area that needs more work.

Bielsa is an experienced manager who knows what he wants, but in this instance he may leave some scratching their heads if Kent proves to be Leeds’ final permanent signing of the summer window.

With Kieran Tierney joining Arsenal on deadline day, Celtic have released a statement assuring fans that the departure was entirely down to the player.

What’s the story?

Tierney finally made his move to the Emirates after a transfer window full of twists and turns came to an end on Thursday evening. His departure of course robs the club of a fantastic player, but also places a hefty wad of cash into the Bhoys’ back pocket.

The 22-year-old was Celtic through and through and departed the club having played an integral part in the historic treble treble success over the past three years.

Yet, the statement announcing his departure is littered with an overwhelming sense of bitterness.

The official club site reads: “We did all we could to keep Kieran at Celtic. While the club did not need or wish to sell Kieran, this was an opportunity which Kieran very much wished to pursue and with the club having received a significant offer, we have agreed to the transfer.”

Poor form from Celtic

The 22-year-old has given a lot to the club since making his debut in 2015 and to point the blame for the deal in his direction isn’t a great look for the club.

Unfortunately, thanks to the lack of an eye-watering TV deal such as the one Premier League outfits enjoy, Celtic are something of a selling club at the moment.

Players like Moussa Dembele, Virgil van Dijk and Victor Wanyama join the club knowing they can win trophies, play for a passionate fan base and immortalise themselves in an iconic club’s history books, while also having a great route to the biggest stage in football – the Premier League.

Focusing the fans’ anger towards a player who gave his all, came through the academy and earned a club-record fee of £25m might make players think twice about a move to Parkhead in the future, scuppering the club’s current structure of getting a few good years out of these types of players before selling for huge profit.

Potential signings might be turned off signing for the club if they think they could be in line for this sort of treatment. It’s not as bad as the Moussa Dembele situation, but it could have been handled better from the club, as they haven’t exactly come out of the deal empty-handed, and the player made zero public fuss to force a move.

It’s not terminal and it’s far from the worst thing the club could’ve done, but given everything Tierney has done for the Bhoys you’d have expected a more graceful summation of his commitment and career in Glasgow.

According to Turkish news outlet Haberturk, Sivasspor are expected to re-sign Leicester City winger Fousseni Diabate.

What’s the word?

The 23-year-old spent time on loan at the Super Lig club in the second half of last season, where he made 17 appearances and scored two goals.

It appears likely that a return is on the cards with Sivasspor enquiring about the young winger.

He moved to the King Power Stadium under Claude Puel in January 2018, signing from Ajaccio, but hasn’t featured this season.

Under the Foxes’ former boss, he played 19 times, netting two goals.

Current manager Brendan Rodgers spoke about the player in a press conference last week, calling him a ‘talent’ but suggesting he is going to struggle to get ahead of the other wingers at the club.

An unfortunate victim

As Rodgers says, Diabate faces tough competition with Harvey Barnes, Demarai Gray and Marc Albrighton at the club.

Not only that, the Northern Irishman has used his wingers sparingly this season with Ayoze Perez and James Maddison being preferred as inside forwards of sorts.

Barnes came on at the weekend and netted the winner against Sheffield United, which has boosted his claims for a first-team spot, whilst Gray remains highly-rated at the club.

That’s even despite the 5 foot 9 Diabete outperforming the Birmingham City academy graduate, which suggests he’s merely an unfortunate victim of who Rodgers favours more.

Diabate laid on three assists in his 17 appearances at Sivasspor, two more than Gray last season, who played 34 times in the Premier League.

The Malian also recorded 2.1 dribbles per game compared to Gray’s 1.2 and was fouled more times at 1.2 per match compared to the 23-year-old’s 0.4.

His 0.4 crosses per game was also higher than Gray’s 0.1, but it appears the Ajaccio man is simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, and would be better off leaving.

وأكد: “لقد استغلينا فرصنا جيدًا وأعتقد أننا لعبنا مباراة قوية، وقال المدرب إذا وضعناهم تحت الضغط فسيرتكبون أخطاء”.

For one reason or another, Leeds’ transfer business in the summer was peculiar.

They only brought in senior players on loan whilst they sold two of their key players in Pontus Jansson and Kemar Roofe.

One was named in the PFA Team of the Year last term, the other was their top scorer.

However, in losing young players like Aapo Halme, Clarke Oduor and Tom Pearce it was strange.

That being said, there could now be a clearer route to the first team for one of Leeds’ rising academy players.

On the chalkboard

Concerns were raised about Leeds’ defence in pre-season but so far this term they’ve only conceded three goals in the Championship as they boast one of the best records in the division.

Marcelo Bielsa seems to have found a new resilience to the defence, largely thanks to Ben White who is averaging 4.2 interceptions and 2.5 tackles per game.

Breaking into that centre of defence which has mainly consisted of Liam Cooper and White will be difficult but it’s not completely out of the question.

In 2019/20, Bielsa has already lined up with Gaetano Berardi and Leif Davis at centre half too.

But it’s the transfer business conducted in the summer that is paving the way for someone like Pascal Struijk to potentially stake a claim.

The 20-year-old was signed from the prestigious Ajax academy in 2018 and is yet to feature for the first team despite being a regular for the U23s.

He replaced the injured Davis for the youth side against Bristol City last Sunday but with players like Halme departing, gaps have opened and the route has become clearer.

Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta are the ones charged with making the big calls on transfers and it’s their work and negotiations in recent months that Struijk should be thankful for.

As recently as Monday, Conor Shaughnessy was sent out on loan, thus opening another door for the young Dutchman to get into the first team.

There are plenty of competition for places, even within the U23s, something that’s evident with Jamie Shackleton, Mateusz Bogusz and Alfie McCalmont in the middle of the park.

But defence has also been another area where the rivalry at youth level has been fierce.

In Radrizzani and Orta moving on some of their young defenders either permanently or temporarily, there might well be an opening for Struijk.

Yorkshire Evening Post suggested this summer that Bielsa rates him highly. Therefore, he must be on the Argentine’s mind as someone who could earn a debut this season.
