According to The Telegraph, Stoke City will demand a fee in the region of £30m for star goalkeeper Jack Butland this summer with interest in the custodian’s services growing as we edge ever closer the transfer window’s opening.

The England international is a target for Crystal Palace, who are surely keen to nail down a man between the sticks for the next decade, although they would be foolish to shell out such an extraordinary sum of money for him.

What’s the word?

Well, The Telegraph reports that the Potters see Butland as being in the same bracket as Jordan Pickford, whom Everton paid then-Championship side Sunderland an initial £25m in summer 2017.

They understand that the prospect of a return to the Premier League will make it incredibly difficult for them to keep the 26-year-old beyond the summer, although they’ll be damned if they don’t try their best and slapping an eye-watering price tag on his head will make a switch to the aforementioned clubs highly unlikely.

Having spent frugally in the past three windows, Palace fans can likely expect a summer of minimal recruitment once again unless Zaha is given his dream move – an exit which would land the Eagles with a huge sum to reinvest into the squad. They must do so wisely, though.

Bigger fish to fry

The electric Ivorian is valued at £75m-£80m by Palace, who will surely be adversed to losing him for anything less considering how important he is to them. However, if a top six club matches that massive asking price then the Eagles will have the opportunity to make some big improvements to the team.

What they mustn’t do is waste the Zaha millions – with Michy Batshuayi returning to Chelsea at the end of the season and Christian Benteke’s future still uncertain, it’s clear that, if the Selhurst Park outfit are to spend big on one player, then it should be a striker.

It’s glaringly obvious that, regardless of the big Belgian’s performance away at Arsenal on Sunday, a replacement or at least quality competition is needed for Benteke and Palace will have clearly learned nothing this season if they don’t spend the big bucks in that department come the summer.

A top goalkeeper is certainly important, but Palace have bigger fish to fry and should avoid paying anywhere near the asking price for Butland.

Tottenham are tonight hosting Ajax in a truly intriguing Champions League affair. Many would have laughed off the notion that the two could face off in a battle for a place in the final. But alas, here we are. Tottenham enter the fixture with injuries galore and will rely on their key men to step up – perhaps none more so than former Ajax man Christian Eriksen. 

The Dane will find himself in combat with Ajax’s high-flying creative midfielders, an example being Dusan Tadic who has taken Europe by storm. Tadic was no match for his counterpart while in the Premier League, yet he now resembles stiff competition.

Who should be considered the better talent, however? Let’s take a look below.

Christian Eriksen

Eriksen has undeniably emerged as Tottenham’s primary creative talent since his £11.5m signing from Ajax in 2013. However, in entering the final stages of his contract, rumours of his departure have spiralled. Moreover, an apparent dip in form has seen some fans become increasingly restless, even growing on the idea of his exit.

Indeed, Eriksen has not shown the consistency Tottenham have become accustomed to throughout the duration of his stay at the club. But the playmaker has still been instrumental in most of their success. Seven goals and 12 assists in the league is certainly not a bad return. Additionally, Eriksen has time and time again saved Tottenham’s blushes with a series of crucially important late goals.

With Eriksen, Tottenham have a player capable of producing the sublime from the first minute to the last. No player has scored more goals from outside the box since his arrival to the Premier League, while he also possesses the ability to thread the ball through the eye of a needle.

The midfielder is now rated at £76.5m by Transfermarkt, but it would take a bid substantially more than that to acquire his services, even if he is entering the final year of his contract. He truly is the beating heart of the Tottenham midfield, a player totally irreplaceable in the current squad.  Should Tottenham progress against Ajax, you can bet Eriksen will have played his part.

TT Grade: A+ Dusan Tadic

Tadic must surely be regarded as one of this season’s biggest surprises. Although on his day, he was indeed an important player for Southampton, he never took the Premier League by storm. 20 goals in 134 appearances, including 6 in his final season, certainly never had the pundits raving. A £10m move to Ajax had no eyebrows raised, but what a bargain he has turned out to be.

Tadic has scored 24 goals in 32 league games this season, adding 9 goals in 16 in the Champions League. Yes, you did read that correctly. This is a turnaround perhaps even more remarkable than Moussa Sissoko’s dramatic upturn in form. The Serbian must surely be considered one of Europes best players when evaluating this season alone.

It’s not just the stats, it’s the calibre of performance. Tadic scored one and assisted two against Real Madrid in arguably the performance of the Champions League thus far. He was simply unstoppable. Trickery, pace, vision – he had the lot. At 30-years-old, the midfielder has now truly reached his peak.

It’s not going to be an easy night for the Tottenham defenders.

TT Grade: A TT Verdict:

So, there we have it. Eriksen wins this one in a severely tight contest. There is no arguing against the fact that Tadic has had the better season. But Eriksen has been doing it for years.

The midfield dynamo is also three years younger, aged 27. The Dane is now approaching the prime years of his career and the best is yet to come. He has been one of the Premier Leagues most exciting talents in recent years and must be recognised as a world-class talent.

Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher believes that Tottenham Hotspur could be destined to win the Champions League, per BBC Sport.

What’s he said?

Spurs came from 3-0 down on aggregate to beat the Dutch giants in Amsterdam, with Lucas Moura scoring a phenomenal hat-trick.

His hat-trick goal, of course, came in the 96th minute, sending fans into something approaching delirium, and confirming that they will play Liverpool in the final in Madrid.

And Fletcher believes that Spurs’ run could be proof that destiny is playing a part in their run to the showpiece.

Indeed, they took just one point from their opening three games of the group stages but beat Inter Milan and PSV Eindhoven before securing a vital point away to Barcelona. A 4-0 aggregate thumping of Borussia Dortmund was followed by an amazing away goal triumph over Manchester City, in which Raheem Sterling saw an injury-time winner ruled out.

And then, of course, came Ajax. Fletcher, then, insists that Liverpool will be wary of this Spurs team in Spain.

He said: “Liverpool will think Spurs are more destined to win it than them. Liverpool were the better team over their two legs and in their other matches they have sailed through to the final.

“But Spurs have scraped and battled through. They went to Manchester City and got hammered but nicked three goals and it almost feels like it is their destiny more than Liverpool’s.

“I still think Liverpool will back themselves. They have beaten Spurs twice already this season, but for me there is just something about Spurs’ run that is different to Liverpool’s.

“Liverpool’s comeback was fantastic, you couldn’t believe what they did against Barcelona, but Spurs just seem to be finding a way, scraping their way to the final.”

Written in the stars

Liverpool have often spoken about destiny as they attempt to win the Premier League title.

But Fletcher might be right.

It really does feel as though there is something special about this Spurs team and their victories in the knockout stages have been nothing short of astonishing.

Few would bet against them going one step further in the final but they face perhaps their toughest opponent so far.

Liverpool offer a potent cocktail of pace, power, tactical assiduity and also have some brilliant individuals.

But Spurs’ run will have sparked some genuine belief in north London. They have the momentum, after all.

Federico Pastorello, the agent of Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku, has revealed why he thinks the Red Devils will have a lot of ‘success’ in the summer when signing new players. 

What’s the word, then?

The Italian told Sky Sports: “I think Manchester United will have a lot of success in the summer bringing in players.

“There will be a lot of work for Mr Woodward but they will be able to convince the top players to come because the brand is amazing, one of the best in the world.”

Pastorello’s main client, Lukaku, is set for talks with the club to discuss his future at Old Trafford after a disappointing season in which he hit just 12 goals in the Premier League.

His lethargic performances have drawn criticism from United’s supporters in the campaign just gone, and we all know the Belgian international is capable of better.

Pastorello’s comments highlight what’s wrong with United

The former Everton man’s agent said he believes United will be able to convince top players to come because ‘the brand is amazing’, which sums up everything that is wrong with the club right now.

If top players are only arriving at the club because of the ‘brand’, then the Red Devils may just end up with more mercenaries such as Paul Pogba, whose own announcement video upon rejoining the club was a partnership with adidas; his and United’s partner.

Currently, United need to move away from being a brand, and focus more on attracting players who fit a particular vision, strategy, ethos; all of that.

If United and Ed Woodward go into the summer thinking they’ll be okay because players will be attracted to the brand, they are going to be stuck with a number of square pegs in round holes who hoover up a chunk of the wage bill with little success on the pitch.

They need to find players who are motivated to put their life on the line for the club, and ones who appreciate the prestige of Man United and are willing to run through brick walls for them; not players who are happy to just make it out on to the pitch so their clothing line does alright.
