George Bartlett cements Somerset dominance after Tom Kohler-Cadmore impresses future team

Yorkshire face battle on final day as hosts set up imposing lead in third innings

George Bartlett made an unbeaten 88•Getty Images

George Bartlett’s first LV= Insurance County Championship half-century of the season cemented a strong Somerset position on the third day of the match with Yorkshire at Taunton.Having seen hopes of a big summer hit by an early shoulder injury, the 24-year-old top-scored with 88 not out as his side ran up 225 for six in their second innings to lead by 373. Tom Lammonby made 46.Tom Kohler-Cadmore had earlier been dismissed for 100 in a Yorkshire first-innings total of 276, replying to Somerset’s 424. Jonathan Tattersall contributed 43, while Kasey Aldridge claimed three for 23 and Jack Brooks three for 73.Much depended on Kohler-Cadmore, unbeaten on 68 against the county he will join next season, when Yorkshire began the day on 167 for four in their first innings, 257 runs behind.Matthew Waite again offered solid support as the pair extended their fifth-wicket stand to 65.It was broken with the total on 194 when Waite, on 21, was caught at short mid-wicket by the shrewdly-placed Bartlett off Aldridge.Kohler-Cadmore was becalmed in the nineties, partly by Jack Leach’s miserly spell from the River End, but reached a largely untroubled hundred off 199 balls, guiding a Lewis Gregory delivery to third man for two.The 27-year-old, who had struck four sixes and nine fours, received warm applause from Somerset fans, as well as those from Yorkshire, their appetites whetted for next summer. It took the introduction of part-time off-spinner Matt Renshaw shortly before lunch to undo Kohler-Cadmore, beaten by a ball that turned and trapped lbw on the back foot.At the interval, the scoreboard read 228 for six. With six runs added, the second new ball became available.Tattersall’s important 108-ball innings ended when he edged Marchant de Lange to 18-year-old wicketkeeper James Rew, who claimed his maiden first class catch for Somerset.Dom Bess drove a catch to cover off Aldridge and when Jordan Thompson was bowled be de Lange, Yorkshire still required one run to avoid the possibility of following on.A Shannon Gabriel single averted that danger, although Somerset may well have batted again anyway, and the deficit was 148 when he was last man out, skying a catch off de Lange.Openers Renshaw and Lammonby wasted no time building on Somerset’s advantage, taking their second innings score to 57 by tea, Lammonby lofting sixes off Thompson and Waite.Their stand had extended to 65 when Renshaw made a hash of an attempted reverse sweep off Jack Shutt and Kohler-Cadmore held a simple chance at slip.Undeterred, Lammonby soon cleared the ropes again, dispatching Bess over long-on. Another six followed off Shutt, but the next ball saw the left-hander get a leading edge to cover where Harry Brook pouched the catch.Lammonby had made his runs from just 47 balls and Somerset led by 236. Bartlett joined the sixes spree, lifting Shutt over wide long-on.First innings centurion Tom Abell made only ten before falling to another Kohler-Cadmore slip catch, attempting to cut a ball from Bess. But Lewis Goldsworthy helped Bartlett add 48 in sensible fashion before a lapse in concentration on 18 saw him slog-sweep a catch to square leg off Bess. At 162 for four, Somerset led by 310.Bartlett went to fifty off 86 balls, with 2 sixes and 4 fours, a timely reminder of the form that saw him first establish a regular place in Somerset’s red ball side in 2019.Rew and Gregory fell cheaply, but two more Bartlett sixes off Matthew Revis left the hosts reached well placed for a final day declaration.

Wolves racing to sign "super" £67k-p/w Lemina replacement alongside Danso

Whilst their pursuit of Kevin Danso continues, Wolverhampton Wanderers are also reportedly racing to sign a former Premier League midfielder who’s keen on a return to England’s top flight.

Wolves transfer news

After already signing Emmanuel Agbadou this month, Wolves have seemingly set their sights on a second defensive reinforcement in the form of Danso. The Midlands club have even reportedly seen a first bid worth £16m rejected by the Ligue 1 club and must now up their offer if they want to welcome the central defender before the end of the transfer window next Monday.

Centre-back isn’t the only area of concern for those in the Midlands, however. They are also in need of a replacement for Mario Lemina, who looks destined to depart before the end of the month amid interest from Saudi Arabia.

Their former captain, Wolves must replace the midfielder’s experience and can do just that and more by signing one particular target for Vitor Pereira this week.

According to The Sun, Wolves are now racing to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Besiktas this month but face competition from relegation rivals Leicester City and Championship leaders Leeds United.

Wolves now working to sign another new defender for Pereira after Agbadou

Wolves and Pereira have their eye on at least one more addition before the transfer window closes.

1 ByBrett Worthington Jan 26, 2025

The former Liverpool and Arsenal man has fallen down the pecking order at Besiktas and is now reportedly keen on a return to the Premier League. A midfielder who’s won it all in English football, if Wolves want experience then Oxlade-Chamberlain is their man.

Crucially too, they would be denying Leicester the chance to sign such a reinforcement by securing his signature before Monday’s deadline. Whether or not they can thrash out a deal in time remains to be seen though.

"Super" Oxlade-Chamberlain can replace Lemina

At 31 years old, Oxlade-Chamberlain has one last Premier League stint in the tank and it’s Wolves who could benefit. Having missed a number of games through injury last season, the £67,000-a-week man is now seemingly past his issues having missed just one game due to injury in the current campaign.

Playing next to Matheus Cunha in the advanced midfield role, Oxlade-Chamberlain would certainly get the chance to roll back the years in the Midlands and once again unleash some vintage strikes that he often stole the headlines with during his Anfield days.

Full of praise for his shooting ability, former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp told reporters in 2023: “It was everything: he came here, had played from time to time at wing-back at Arsenal, winger for sure, and he became a proper No.8 here in the way we wanted to play – super-energetic, technically outstanding.

“I remember early and we had our first finishing sessions and I looked and thought, ‘He didn’t score that many goals in the past, if I could shoot like you I would start in the morning at seven and finish shooting at nine or 10 o’clock because it’s incredible!”

Jayawardene and Zaheer elevated to global roles with Mumbai Indians

Jayawardene appointed head of performance for the three teams, Zaheer becomes head of cricket development

Mahela Jayawardene has taken up a broader role at Mumbai Indians, as the franchise’s global head of performance. In his new position, Jayawardene will oversee the coaching and scouting at all the three teams the franchise owners now have – Mumbai Indians in the IPL, MI Emirates in the ILT20, and MI Cape Town in the SA20. Zaheer Khan, earlier the director of cricket operations, is now the global head of cricket development for the three teams. In a statement, the group said that the team management recognised the need for a central team at the helm of affairs because of the company’s expansion to “ensure consistency […] on ethos, values, and learning, that have made MI one of the most loved cricket brands across the globe”.ESPNcricinfo has learnt that the franchise will shortly unveil the new head coach for the IPL team, a job Jayawardene held since the 2017 edition of the IPL, overseeing three title wins.Related

Elaborating on the roles and responsibilities of the two men who will be right at the top of the backroom staff, the statement said that Jayawardene would be involved with “overall strategic planning, the creation of an integrated global high-performance eco-system, as well as responsibility for each team’s coaching and support structures, working closely with the team head coaches to ensure synergies, a consistent brand of cricket, and implementation of best practices set by MI.”Jayawardene has already started work in his new role. Jayawardene was also involved in the process to identify the five direct acquisitions for the SA20 team in August.Calling the elevation “an absolute honour”, Jayawardene said he looked forward “to this new responsibility to build a strong cohesive global brand of cricket”.As for Zaheer, he would be “responsible for player development, building on MI’s robust programme around talent identification and grooming and adopting the same across geographies, which has been core to MI’s philosophy and success”.”MI has been home for me as a player and as a coaching team member, and now as we embark on a new journey, I look ahead to working closely with all the stakeholders in the global network to unearth new potential that can join the family,” Zaheer said. The streamlining of the top roles in the coaching staff came after the Mumbai Indians owners bought the two new teams.Mumbai Indians have been the most successful team at the IPL over the years•BCCI

“I’m happy to have Mahela and Zak as part of our global core team. Both have been an integral part of the MI family and embody the spirit of the cricket MI stands for,” Akash Ambani, chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm, the owners of Mumbai Indians, said. “I’m confident that they would be able to ensure the same flows through all our teams globally and make a difference in the cricketing ecosystems across the globe.”The ILT20 and the SA20 will both have their inaugural seasons in January-February next year. The owners felt that the changed circumstances needed one person in charge of the coaching arm globally, a role that best suited Jayawardene because of his extensive experience as an international player and captain, as well as a coach in franchise T20 cricket. In the IPL, Jayawardene has been the second-most successful coach after Stephen Fleming, who has been with Chennai Super Kings since 2009 and has won four IPL titles with them. The Jayawardene-Rohit Sharma [Mumbai Indians captain] combine has made three IPL playoffs in six seasons and, remarkably won the title each time. They are the only team with five IPL titles and the only team apart from Super Kings to successfully defend the title, in 2020.Jayawardene and Zaheer have worked closely since the latter joined the support staff at Mumbai Indians in 2018. In 91 matches since then, Mumbai Indians’ win-loss ratio of 1.289 has been the best among the original eight IPL teams. However, Mumbai have struggled for form and consistency in the last two seasons, and finished last in the ten-team event in 2022 where they won just four out of their 14 matches.

‘Sumiço’ do quinteto

Boucher unfazed as South Africa face juggling act between two World Cups

With the T20 event imminent, they may want to rest players during the ODIs in India, but that could put their 50-overs qualification at risk

South Africa face a dilemma as they head to India for a white-ball tour that comprises three T20Is and three ODIs. With the T20 World Cup barely a month away, most teams have their focus set on the marquee tournament. But South Africa don’t quite have that liberty. They are currently in 11th place on the ODI Super League points table, with just four wins from 13 matches. They also withdrew from the three-game ODI series against Australia that was originally scheduled for January 2023, and will lose all their Super League points from that series. All this effectively hurts their prospects of direct qualification for next year’s ODI World Cup in India, with only the top eight teams on the table eligible for direct entry. The bottom five teams, along with the Associates, will have to play the World Cup Qualifier in a bid to seal the last two spots at the ten-team tournament.Related

SA's ODI World Cup hopes hang by a thread with Australia series cancelled

So how do South Africa approach the three-match ODI series in India, which begins on October 6, just 18 days before their first game at the T20 World Cup? Do they put out a full-strength unit days before a crucial tournament and try to secure Super League points, or do they put direct qualification for the ODI World Cup at further risk by not playing their best XI?”I think the one-day series that we are going to play, we want results, and we want to win,” Mark Boucher, the South Africa head coach, said ahead of the team’s departure to India. “But everything with regards to the Indian tour will be bearing in mind that we have got a [T20] World Cup ahead of us.”So if it is resting players or giving opportunities to players… I see the squad that is going with us – maybe 19, 20 players – I don’t see it like a T20 squad or a one-day squad. I look at opportunities throughout 20 individuals that we just need to manage and get them in the best space for the [T20] World Cup.”While South Africa have lost just four of their last 21 completed T20Is, their ODI cricket has suffered over recent months. Boucher attributed this to not having their best players available at various times.”One-day cricket, we have had a bit of a mixed bag because we have lost players at crucial times in series to IPL and all that type of stuff, which is uncontrollable,” he said. “So we haven’t always been able to have our best players playing certain competitions and series and games that we have always needed.”That’s why we are in the situation where we have to manage regarding qualification. This white-ball team has a lot of special players. It’s just the balance on trying to work out how do we get everyone involved and get them ready for a big event, which is the World Cup.”‘I saw an opportunity for my future, for my family going forward, and I took that opportunity’ – Boucher on signing up with Mumbai Indians•Getty Images

India will be South Africa’s last pit stop before they head to Australia for the T20 World Cup. Incidentally, India and South Africa are in the same group in the tournament, and will face-off on October 30, in Perth. Boucher is well aware of this fact.”We have got to be mindful of the conditions that we are going to be playing in,” he said. “It’s more about not getting too many cards out, especially in India because they are in our pool as well, so we are going to meet up with them at some stage,” Boucher said. “There are quite a few games that we play against them, the venues that we are going to, we are not sure what we will get.”Boucher recently announced that he would step away from his role as South Africa head coach to take up a similar position with Mumbai Indians in the IPL. While he was non-committal over the reasons behind his departure, citing “contractual obligations” with CSA and Mumbai, he insisted that he remains “100% committed to the players”.”It was just a situation I was put into, and I saw an opportunity for my future, for my family going forward, and I took that opportunity,” Boucher said. “My decisions from a personal perspective aren’t going to hamper these guys at all. I will continue to give them everything that I have in order to have the best outcome in a World Cup.”It is a massive World Cup for us, and I am really looking forward to it, and I know the players are looking forward to it too. It is a very strong squad as well, and it is a massive opportunity for us, and we have the players to push for a great outcome in the World Cup.”

Man Utd confident they can afford "unpredictable" £33m+ summer signing

Manchester United have already turned their attentions to the summer transfer window and are exploring a move to sign a new star in the making for Ruben Amorim, it has been revealed.

Manchester United signings

It has been a tough month for Manchester United on and off the pitch as they look to rescue their Premier League campaign under Amorim. There have been shoots of recovery in the results, if not the performances, under the new head coach, with the club losing just once in 2025 before they were soundly beaten by Crystal Palace in their most recent outing.

That included an FA Cup penalty shoot out win over Arsenal to set up a fourth round tie against Leicester City and former interim coach Ruud van Nistelrooy, as well as automatic progression into the next round of the Europa League.

Man United could look to strengthen in midfield late on

ByJoe Nuttall Feb 3, 2025

In the Premier League though, they remain marooned in 13th place and even a spot in one of Europe’s lesser competitions next season looks highly unlikely barring a shock turnaround.

In the transfer market, the Red Devils agreed to let both Antony and Marcus Rashford leave on loan to Real Betis and Aston Villa respectively, moves that will save them significant wages for the remainder of the campaign with the pair among the club’s highest earners.

Meanwhile, they added promising Lecce defender Patrick Dorgu to their ranks, as well as youth talent Adyen Heaven from Arsenal, whose progress may now be fast tracked following the news of Lisandro Martínez’s season-ending injury.

Now, attention has already turned to potential summer business at Old Trafford, where Amorim’s overhaul can finally begin to take shape.

Manchester United exploring £30m+ summer move

That comes with The Athletic reporting that Manchester United are already in the process of “exploring” a move to sign Sporting CP teenage talent Geovany Quenda in a move that could cost over £30m despite his tender age.

Quenda is still just 17-years-old but has marked himself out as one of the most exciting players in Portugal, with football analyst Ben Mattinson hailing his “balanced” profile while adding that he is “highly unpredictable”.

Having already played under Amorim during their time in Lisbon together, he could now be set to follow him to Old Trafford on a familiar route once trod by Cristiano Ronaldo.

As per the report, a deal to bring the teenager to Old Trafford is “being explored at an expected cost of around €40m” [£33.2m] when he turns 18, while the Red Devils are comfortable they can afford his wages too, especially if one or both of Antony or Marcus Rashford were to leave in the summer.

Were he to arrive, he would likely take up the right wing-back role under Amorim as he did at Sporting, which would certainly provide his side with more attacking impetus in wide areas opposite Dorgu, an area in which they have notoriously struggled so far under their new coach. Though Manchester United won’t be the only side chasing him, it seems that at the moment, they lead the way.
