Taylor ends Test career with final wicket as New Zealand square series

Wagner and Jamieson share seven wickets in an innings win inside three days in the second Test

New Zealand gave Ross Taylor a memorable farewell from Test cricket with an innings-and-117-run win against Bangladesh in Christchurch inside three days. That helped the home side square the series after they had lost the first Test by eight wickets. Taylor, with his family in attendance at Hagley Oval, took the last wicket of the Test when Tom Latham held his sixth catch of the match, from a miscued slog by Ebadot Hossain.Bangladesh were bowled out for 278 in their second innings after following on, with four wickets for Kyle Jamieson and three for Neil Wagner. But it was Litton Das’ counter-attack in the third session, which gave him his second Test hundred, that was one of the highlights of the day.Jamieson fined for inappropriate language

Kyle Jamieson has been fined 15% of his match fee for a Level 1 breach of the ICC’s code of conduct during the Christchurch Test. In the 41st over of Bangladesh’s first innings on Monday, Jamieson was found to have used “inappropriate language” after dismissing Yasir Ali.

In addition to the fine, one demerit point was added to Jamieson’s disciplinary record. It was his third offence in a 24-month period, taking his total to three demerit points.

Not that Bangladesh ever really looked like they would make New Zealand bat again, as the next best individual score for them was Nurul Hasan’s 36, and the best partnership the 101 Litton and Nurul put up for the sixth wicket.Bangladesh were quite a way from even dreaming of replicating their win in the Mount Maunganui Test last week. Nonetheless, they will go back home proud of the result – a 1-1 draw topped everything they had done in the country previously. The fight was on show after tea on Tuesday. Litton, who took 46 balls to score his first boundary, had reached 33 off 64 balls when he changed the mood. He struck 17 runs off Jamieson in the 59th over, hitting him for two fours and an upper-cut six. Both fours were pulled, dissecting a packed on-side field. He then struck four boundaries off Trent Boult with some delightful shots. After getting to his half-century off a guided four through point, he drove Boult through mid-off, cover and straight down the ground, arguably his best shot of the innings.Litton had taken 35 runs off 12 balls in that period, and the sixth-wicket partnership had crossed the 100 mark. Nurul only needed to hold one end up. Instead, he holed out to mid-off where Wagner took a diving catch to his left.Mehidy Hasan Miraz followed after seven overs, when Latham took his fifth catch in the slips in the Test, off Jamieson. Litton, however, continued towards his second Test hundred, hammering Wagner with the last of his pulled fours. He then swatted Wagner over the covers, soon after Wagner had a few words to say to him.Litton Das hit a counter-attacking century, his second in Tests•Getty Images

Another ramped four and a quickly run two, off Jamieson, took Litton to the three-figure mark. He saluted his dressing room Ebadot in celebration. Jamieson, however, got Litton in the end, getting one to slip past his straight bat, to get him lbw. Jamieson added a fourth when Tim Southee ran back from mid-on to complete Shoriful Islam’s catch.Having followed-on 395 runs behind, Bangladesh had started their second innings very cautiously. The openers Shadman Islam and Mohammad Naim left more deliveries than they played against the new ball. But after 55 minutes, Shadman was caught down the leg side off Jamieson.Najmul Hossain Shanto spent an eventful hour at the crease after that, hitting Wagner for three fours and a six. But it was the left-arm quick who had the last laugh in that mini battle, Shanto out caught at fine-leg where Boult took a tumbling catch.Debutant Naim’s vigil of two hours and 40 minutes ended when Latham took a brilliant catch diving to his left at second slip. Southee had Mominul Haque caught at first slip, giving Taylor his 163rd catch in Test cricket. Yasir Ali was targeted with the short ball in his nine-ball stay, finally ending when he got into a tangle against Wagner. The visitors would have felt the full pressure of New Zealand’s four-man pace attack if not for the Litton-Nurul counter-attack, giving them a little bit to take back from what was a poor performance overall – in the Test, not the series.

Ayabonga Khaka four-for bails South Africa batters out against Bangladesh

Bangladesh batters fail to capitalise on solid bowling effort in maiden World Cup outing

Ayabonga Khaka became the fifth South African to take 100 ODI wickets and claimed only her second four-for in ODIs to help South Africa defend 207 in their World Cup opener. Khaka’s haul included three wickets for three runs in nine deliveries to derail Bangladesh after a solid start to their maiden World Cup batting effort.Bangladesh gave an exceptional account of themselves in the field, led by 19-year old left-armer Fariha Trisna. She finished with a career-best 3 for 35. Still, South Africa would have been disappointed with a rusty effort with the bat. They had no individual scores over 42, and only one partnership of significance.A 71-run sixth-wicket stand between Chloe Tryon and Marizanne Kapp set South Africa up from 119 for 5 to reach a 200+ total against a disciplined Bangladesh attack that took all but one of their chances and gave the team a chance of pulling off an upset in their first appearance at the event. In contrast, Bangladesh started and finished the innings well, with a 69-run opening stand between Shamima Sultana and Sharmin Akhter setting the tone and a 53-run seventh-wicket partnership between Nigar Sultana and Ritu Moni kept them in the hunt until close to the end.South Africa’s headline seamers, Shabnim Ismail and Kapp, went wicketless until the death when Ismail bowled Moni in the 46th over with Bangladesh needing 42 runs from 26 balls. Moni and Sultana’s stand had grown to more than fifty but the required run-rate was up to 8.6 an over in the last five when Ismail was brought back into the attack. She gave away just one run in her first four balls and, under pressure, Moni swung across the line against the fifth, missed and was bowled. That all but ended Bangladesh’s hopes of a fairytale start to their campaign but they’ve shown they mean business ahead of a meeting with the hosts New Zealand on Monday.Bangladesh’s top two posted their second-highest stand ever and brought up 50 in the 16th over. They breached the rope six times between them, most impressively when Sultana swept Sune Luus wide of deep square before things got nervy. Sultana was dropped on 22 at slip and four balls later, Akhter was nearly run-out at the non-striker’s end as Bangladesh searched for urgency against a gently climbing required run-rate.Enter Khaka, who nagging full length and difficult to score off has been key to her success. Two of her first three overs were maidens and then she removed Sultana with a full ball on the stumps that bowled the Bangladesh opener when she cleared the front leg to try to drive down the ground. Six balls later, Khaka tempted Akhter with width outside off, she tried to steer the ball to third man but got a thick outside edge and was caught behind. And two balls after that, Murshida Khatun, promoted up the order, also went on the drive and nicked off. Bangladesh tumbled from 69 without loss to 72 for 3 and things only got worse.Fargana Hoque was run-out by a direct hit from Masabata Klaas at short third man and Bangladesh were 85 for 4. If South Africa thought that put them back in control, they were sure of it in the next eight overs. They only conceded 23 runs in that time before Khaka struck again. Rumana Ahmed tried to drive away from her body, forgot to use her feet and was caught behind. Klaas had Salma Khatun caught at mid-wicket two overs later and at 114 for 6, the game appeared to be South Africa’s but the Bangladesh lower-middle-order had other ideas.Moni took on Kapp and Khaka with a series of cuts and was playing the aggressor role in her partnership with Sultana. She brought up the 50-run stand off Khaka but was bowled seven balls later. Bangladesh’s last four wickets fell for nine runs, and that could have been fewer but for some clumsiness by South Africa in the field. Wolvaardt dropped two catches in total and they gave away 22 extras, 17 wides in total, which will be an area of concern.Bangladesh made only one glaring error in the field when they could have had a wicket as early as the eighth ball. Tazmin Brits, playing in place of Lizelle Lee, chipped Trisna to mid-on. The chance was simple, and at catchable height, but was put down. It took Brits 19 deliveries and until the middle of the sixth over to get off the mark. She did with a heave over mid-on to hit Trisna for four.Wolvaardt was on 16 at the time and benefitted from some early width from Jahanara Alam but only brought out her signature drive at the end of the seventh over, when she beat a packed offside field. Just as the opening pair seemed to settle, Bangladesh separated them. Brits flicked a Trishna inswinger to Ahmed at midwicket to end a laboured innings on 8.The dismissal came in the first of five boundary-less overs, which were ended when Wolvaardt cut Salma Khatun past backward point before Lara Goodall brought up South Africa’s 50 off 79 balls. Their run-rate remained sluggish as Bangladesh squeezed and then seized the advantage with two wickets in four deliveries.Wolvaardt was bowled by Moni as she tried to drive through the offside against a delivery that moved slightly inwards, missed the inside edge and found the stumps. Then Goodall reverse swept Salma to backward point where Ahmed took a diving catch to leave South Africa on 70 for 3 and it was up to current captain, Sune Luus, and former captain Mignon du Preez to rebuild.Bangladesh gave away just 22 runs in the next nine overs and with pressure building, du Preez chipped a return catch back to Ahmed. Her departure made Luus more aggressive and she brought out the sweep but with confidence but just as she was hitting her stride, she was run-out at the non-striker’s end, backing up too far when Kapp punched an Ahmed delivery down the pitch and the ball deflected off the bowler’s fingers onto the stumps.South Africa could have lost Tryon in the next over when she was given out lbw by a Tryon delivery that swung in but she edged it onto her pad and reviewed successfully. She went on to hit the first six of the innings when she charged Ahmed and hit her over long-on, arguably South Africa’s most confident shot of the innings.South Africa entered the last 10 overs on 153 for 5 and Kapp took it on herself to attack. She sent Moni wide of point and Salma over midwicket but it was only Tryon who could breach the boundary for six again. She hit Salma over long-on but then miscued Alam to mid-off four balls later to leave it to the tail to finish.Trisha Chetty was trapped lbw by Trisna and Shabnim Ismail hit Trisna to point to give Trisna a career-best before Kapp tried to hit Jahanara over midwicket but Hoque ran in from the deep and took a good catch. South Africa managed just 16 runs for the loss of four wickets but asked Bangladesh to complete their second highest successful chase ever. In the end, it was too much.

VOZÃO TIRA O ZERO DO PLACAR

Man City open shock talks with "fantastic" £180k-p/w ace in Sterling repeat

In what would be one of the most shocking moves of 2025, Manchester City have reportedly opened talks with the representatives of a Premier League title rival’s player in an attempt to land a Raheem Sterling repeat.

Man City transfer news

For the first time since Pep Guardiola’s debut campaign, Manchester City are in need of a host of reinforcements. From an ageing backline to similar issues in midfield, the Premier League champions must turn towards the transfer window in 2025 if they want to prevent their recent blip from becoming a gradual fade away from the title picture.

Man City entertaining idea of signing "promising" ace as soon as January

The Premier League champions desperately need a defensive rebuild.

1 ByTom Cunningham Dec 7, 2024

With that said, it’s no surprise that the Citizens have been linked with Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes in recent weeks. The Brazilian midfielder would be an instant upgrade on Ilkay Gundogan, whose return included plenty of sentiment, but ultimately failed to make the positive impact that City had hoped.

The German, now 34 years old, is past his best and among the players that City will need to replace when they get the opportunity to do so. And Guimaraes isn’t the only Premier League talent that they could turn to in terms of reinforcements.

According to CaughtOffside, Manchester City have opened shock talks with Trent Alexander-Arnold over a potential move to the Etihad Stadium when his current £180,000-a-week Liverpool contract expires in the summer.

Trent Alexander-Arnold for Liverpool

To say that the move would shock the Premier League would be an understatement. Alexander-Arnold would likely have a strained relationship with Liverpool fans if he decided to move to Real Madrid, but a move to Man City would end that relationship entirely.

He wouldn’t be the first to swap Anfield for the Etihad, as a certain Raheem Sterling did the same in the summer of 2015, with City splashing out a reported £49m to sign the Liverpool winger, who went on to enjoy incredible success under Guardiola.

Despised by the Reds ever since, Sterling is a prime example of what Alexander-Arnold may have to prepare himself for if he completed such a move.

"Fantastic" Alexander-Arnold would reach new level under Guardiola

Throughout history, there are several examples of dream partnerships which the world of football never quite got to see play out on the pitch, with Steven Gerrard and Jurgen Klopp near the top of that list.

And by the end of his career, the world of football may well be left wondering just how Alexander-Arnold would have excelled under Guardiola unless he shocks the rest of English football this summer.

The England international is undoubtedly one of the best right-backs in Premier League history and we’ve already seen how the detail of Arne Slot’s tactical approach has created a new version of the Liverpool star.

So there’s no telling just how much Alexander-Arnold would evolve under the guidance of one of football’s greatest minds in Guardiola.

Dubbed “fantastic” by former Liverpool manager Klopp last season, it feels unlikely that Alexander-Arnold would shatter Liverpool hearts to such a degree at this stage, but he certainly has a decision to make in the coming months.

Arrascaeta, Pedro, Gabigol…

Josh Bohannon primed for England chance after Caribbean false dawn

Lancashire batter seeks to build on promise of breakthrough season in 2021

Josh Bohannon knows a strong start to the season for Lancashire could propel him into the England reckoning•Getty Images

When and if Josh Bohannon earns an England Test call-up, he will be more prepared than most for the media demands that invariably follow.Bohannon’s name was mentioned prominently in the press before the squad to play West Indies in the Caribbean was announced in early February. On the day the touring party was due to be released, Bohannon’s phone rang after a reporter had received a tip-off that he would be included.”There was obviously a lot of chat, especially on the Monday before it got announced on the Tuesday,” Bohannon explained. “Funnily enough, I did an interview for Sky on the Tuesday. They thought I’d been picked, which I didn’t know about – and then obviously the news broke that I wasn’t in it.”It was interesting. He rang me saying, ‘congrats’ and I said, ‘what are you congratulating me for?’ He said, ‘I’ve heard you’ve been picked’ and I said, ‘well, you know more than I do’ and then obviously I hadn’t been picked.”He asked me to answer them as if I’d been picked and I said, ‘how are you supposed to do that?’ It was a real awkward conversation. It was just an interesting chat really. I didn’t know what to say. It was obviously gutting, but it was nice to be spoken about, I guess.”While Bohannon’s call-up did not materialise, the fact that his name came up as much as it did underlines the extent to which his reputation has grown in the last two years, and reinforces the notion that a strong start to the season for Lancashire will put him in the conversation for the first home Test of the English summer, against New Zealand at Lord’s on June 2.Bohannon scored 853 runs at 53.31 last season, the most of any batter who played in Division One (and the 11th-most overall) and his career average of 43.42 in first-class cricket compares favourably with most young batters in the country. Having recently turned 25, there is still plenty of room for improvement, too.His form for Lancashire last season earned him a call-up to the England Lions tour to Australia and though the trip was interrupted by inclement weather, his second-innings 51 against Australia A was another demonstration of his ability to the England hierarchy – even if there has been significant turnover in personnel since then.Josh Bohannon climbs into a cut shot•Getty Images

“It was obviously very nice to get away and not just spend [the winter] in the indoor school,” Bohannon said, speaking at Lancashire’s press day at Emirates Old Trafford last week. “It’s obviously nice to score some runs. I’d have liked some more as always, but it was nice to come away and have a sense of belonging in that environment.”I just hope I can keep performing. If it happens, it happens, and if it doesn’t. I can only try my best and try and keep knocking on that door. The one thing that is blatantly obvious is that when people do get in, they do get given a chance. Hopefully, if I do get some more runs again this year, or whenever it is that I get a chance, hopefully I can stay in for a while and prove that I’m good enough to bat in that top order for England.”Cricket is hard enough as it is playing for Lancs without putting all that pressure on my shoulders. People have gone wrong in the past, almost thinking too far ahead – ‘if I do this, I’ll get a go’. So I’ve done a lot of work with the psychologist just to make sure that every day I’m in the right space and I think the more that I enjoy cricket, the better chance I’ve got of scoring runs.”Working with psychologists has helped Bohannon gain perspective. “I’m quite a fiery bloke so it’s just about being able to channel that anger when it’s needed on the field and pick a battle in the game, as opposed to just always being angry,” he said.Related

“Off the field I’m very calm. But a lot of stuff on the field gets in my head… it’s about being able to channel that. Last year was certainly the best state of mind I’ve been in in cricket, really enjoying it, and obviously I had some success so hopefully [it’s the] same again this year.”Bohannon started the season at No. 3 for Lancashire, making 19 in their 10-wicket win against Kent at Canterbury, having batted at No. 4 for the majority of last season. He may yet shuffle back down the order once Keaton Jennings is fit again, but said he was comfortable batting in either position. He hopes that his “simple” technique will serve him well if he makes the step up to international cricket, and feels as though he is prepared for the heightened scrutiny that he will face this year as one of the key batters in Lancashire’s line-up.”Who knows until you play? I’ve no idea,” he said. “But having spoken to a lot of coaches and stuff, there’s not a great deal of moving parts [in my technique]. It’s quite simple, which hopefully will stand me in good stead if I do get a chance.”I’ve played enough now that people are aware where you score and that sort of thing. It’s the same as any season. It doesn’t take people long anyway to work out where you score.”

Blow for Corberan as £20k-a-week West Brom star is "feeling pain again"

West Brom manager Carlos Corberan has confirmed that an influential player has suffered an injury setback ahead of their Championship clash with Watford.

West Brom prepare for trip to Watford

The Baggies finally got back to winning ways in the league in midweek, beating Coventry City 2-0 at the Hawthorns to stop a run of four successive draws in the competition. Next up for Corberan’s West Brom side is a trip to Watford on Sunday afternoon, in what promises to be another test of their promotion credentials, considering the Hornets currently sit eighth in the table.

The fact that the Baggies are in sixth place despite drawing 11 of their 20 league matches this season arguably bodes well, suggesting that they still have further gears to find and could push back towards the automatic promotion places, having led the way earlier in the campaign.

West Brom aren’t without their injury problems currently, with the likes of Grady Diangana and Kyle Bartley missing, and now an important update has emerged regarding one of those individuals.

West Brom player suffers injury setback

Speaking ahead of the weekend action [via Birmingham World], Corberan confirmed that West Brom attacker Diangana won’t be available for the Watford game, having suffered a setback in his recovery from injury.

“Unfortunately it is being frustrating because we know how important he was. There is no important injury, but at the end we are not having an important player that of course we want to have with us. Still we need to wait. Let’s see. I was thinking he would be part of the group today but yesterday he was feeling pain again that is not letting him feel available for the squad.”

This is so frustrating for anyone of a West Brom persuasion, especially as the report states that there was initial hope that Diangana would be back for the Coventry game. Instead, he isn’t even going to make the matchday squad for Watford, as he continues his recovery.

Granted, the 26-year-old hasn’t exactly had the most impressive of seasons so far, failing to register a single goal contribution in 12 Championship appearances, but he is still an important player on his day, with Lee Hendrie once showing his appreciation for him: “I had a good chat with Gareth Barry about him and he says that he’ll go on and play at the top.

“They adore him at West Brom and I think they’d love to keep hold of him but the situation with West Brom potentially going up and West Ham potentially going down, he could see himself back in the Championship. He’s been magnificent, easy on the eye and a massive plus-point for West Brom.”

West Brom must finally ditch £7m dud who Ismael said had “everything”

West Bromwich Albion will have to consider shifting on this dud soon.

Hopefully, the £20,000-a-week Diangana will be available after the weekend action, coming back in for the Christmas period, and the hope is that West Brom still prove to be too strong for Watford without him.
