Marchant de Lange five-for humbles Southern Brave before Dawid Malan steers chase

Trent Rockets complete straightforward win with unbeaten fifties from Malan and D’Arcy Short

A brutal spell of fast bowling from Marchant de Lange set Trent Rockets on the path to an overwhelming victory over Southern Brave at Trent Bridge.de Lange, a late replacement as overseas player in the Rockets squad, claimed the tournament’s first five-for as reward for a spell of sustained and smart pace bowling to help the Rockets complete a nine-wicket victory with 18-balls to spare.Provided excellent support from his side’s spin bowlers – not least Joe Root and Samit Patel, who both conceded less than a run-a-ball – de Lange’s burst kept Brave to the lowest total so far recorded in the competition on an excellent pitch offering surprising pace and bounce. Indeed, de Lange, who had never played a competitive game at the ground, said he had been warned the surface would be a bit sluggish. There were a couple of uncomfortable moments early in the Rockets reply. Alex Hales was bowled by the first ball he faced, a lovely inswinging yorker from George Garton, and Dawid Malan sustained a sharp blow on the glove from a lifting ball from the distinctly slippery Tymal Mills. But with little pressure from the run-rate, Malan was able to take a measured approach to his innings. And in partnership with D’Arcy Short he added an unbroken 124 from 82 balls to take Rockets to victory over one of the pre-tournament favourites for the title.”De Lange is quite an aggressive bowler and he hit the deck pretty hard and used his yorker well towards the end,” Ross Whiteley, who top-scored for his side with 39, said. “He is a class act.”Losing a couple of wickets in the Powerplay is always tough. We tried to rebuild through the middle but kept losing wickets at crucial times and were probably 25 or 30 short.”Marchant of menace
If you don’t know what de Lange looks like, imagine a bear in man fancy dress. Maybe the teeth are a little less sharp; maybe the back a little less hairy. But he is, basically, an enormous, beast of a man who looks as if he could snap tree trunks, hurl boulders and scare the villagers into chasing him with pitchforks. Really, he could make Arnold Schwarzenegger look like a vole, want to wear long sleeves and commit to going to the gym far more often.Anyway, until a couple of weeks ago, de Lange was looking at spending this portion of the season playing for Somerset in the Royal London One-Day Cup. But with Wahab Riaz struggling to gain a visa, de Lange won a late call-up and has now made history – of sorts – by becoming the first person to take a five-for in the Hundred. And quite an impression he made, too. Complementing his sharp pace – he reached 94mph/151kph at one stage – with good control and an ability to implement the plans set ahead of the game, he claimed three important wickets in his first 10 balls to ensure the Brave innings could never really gain any momentum. After striking with his first ball – Delray Rawlins carving to cover – he went round the wicket to Colin de Grandhomme and, after a couple of short balls, bowled him round his legs with a full one as he moved across his stumps and looked to flick behind square. Devon Conway was then caught behind as he fished at one angled across him delivered with a cross-seam.Generally, even the quickest bowlers need variations in limited-overs cricket. But the pace of the deliveries which took those wickets – 92.4mph, 92mph and 93mph respectively – tells a pretty accurate story of his spell: it was brutally, relentlessly, wonderfully fast. Those 10 balls cost just eight runs.”The top wicket takers in the short formats are normally spinners and slower bowlers,” he said. “But I feel like there is a time and a place for express pace. I tried to keep it simple and just do the basics well and it was a pitch that helped me today.”I didn’t expect to be involved in the competition until a couple of weeks ago but I just try to take opportunities whenever they come along.”He came back later for more. After having Chris Jordan, who has sometimes struggled against the short ball, taken on the deep backward square fence with a well-directed 89mph bouncer, he then completed the format’s first five-for with a full, straight and fast one (91 mph) which bowled Garton. There was perhaps one slower ball in the entire 20.The left Root
Is Joe Root an allrounder these days? Probably. He opened the bowling in the last World T20 final, after all, and claimed two wickets, including that of Chris Gayle, in his first over. He’s recently taken a Test five-for (for just eight runs), too, and operated as England’s lone spinner in their most recent Tests.Certainly he made a valuable contribution to Trent Rockets’ victory with his bowling here. Darting the ball in at a sharp pace – around 58mph at times – he sometimes cramped the batters for room and sometimes asked them to stretch for the ball. What he didn’t allow was skipping down the pitch and hitting over long-off. Eighteen of his 20 deliveries were at Brave’s plethora of top-order left-handers, and in all he conceded just 17 runs with nine dot-balls. Three of those runs were from wides and the only boundary came from a misfield.Proving that he wasn’t reliant upon left-handers, though, Root claimed a wicket with 50% of the deliveries he bowled at right-handers. Sure, that was only two balls. But in bowling Liam Dawson with his final ball, Root completed an excellent contribution.Dawid Malan guided the chase•Getty Images

Love it when a Malan comes together
However well Malan does – and as the world’s top-rated T20 batter, he really has done very well – you feel he’s only one poor innings from the questions about his place in the England team resurfacing. He sometimes takes a little while to get going, you see. And in the fast-paced world of T20 – or 100-ball – cricket, there isn’t much time to smell the roses. His critics will, therefore, suggest this innings taught us little. They will point out that the run rate was relatively undemanding and he had the time to play himself in as is his preferred method. And it’s true, Rockets will rarely be required to score so few on so good a surface. But in marshalling this chase with calm precision, Malan showed one of his many skills. It’s not just that he has a good range of strokes; it’s that he has the temperament which seems to adapt to the demands of the occasion. And his desire to take responsibility for scoring the winning runs really isn’t such a bad quality for a batter. Here, at least, he played a calm and expert hand. Despite taking a painful blow to the hand from Mills – which we may yet hear more about in the coming days, as it looked worryingly painful – he was quick to come forward to anything over-pitched and drove quite beautifully. And when Garton and Chris Jordan dropped short, they were pulled imperiously or uppercut respectively for sixes. With him at the crease, there was never much doubt about this result.Crowd noise
You’re never more than about an hour from the latest missive – be it from the ECB or the broadcasters – informing you of record viewing figures at these games. Sometimes those figures are genuinely impressive; sometimes they are somewhat puzzling. The claim that Friday’s match at Edgbaston set a record for the highest attendance for a women’s domestic match outside London turned out to be inaccurate. It might, to be fair, have been the highest attendance at a professional women’s match outside London. But the attendance at the men’s matches has been less impressive. The Kia Oval was not full on Thursday, for example. And it very often is for T20 games. And while Edgbaston’s numbers on Friday were decent – at 12,137 they were below what they might be for a local derby but above what they might be for most other domestic games – the figure for this game of 12,783 was again only respectable. This is a ground on which T20 has tended to sell well for several years. Is that good enough? Maybe. But, judging by the chants and songs – at one stage, the crowd attempted to get their own “Sweet Caroline” going – the much fabled new audience isn’t quite as prevalent as you might have been told. And, contrary to what you might hear elsewhere, some kids have been seen previously at T20 Blast matches. These games are attracting at least respectable attendances. And they’re entertaining encounters. But they’re not quite the miracle cure some would have you believe.

As well as Bajrami: Rangers star put in his best performance of the season

Glasgow Rangers kicked off their Europa League campaign in great style with a 2-0 win away from Ibrox against Malmo in Sweden on Thursday night.

Nedim Bajrami opened the scoring for Philippe Clement’s side in the opening minute of the match, tapping the ball into an empty net after Cyriel Dessers hit the post.

Substitute Ross McCausland doubled the lead in the second half with a terrific, low, left-footed strike into the bottom corner, after reacting first to a loose ball on the edge of the box.

Bajrami, who kicked off the scoring, enjoyed a fantastic evening on his European debut for the Scottish giants on the left of the attacking trident behind Dessers.

Nedim Bajrami's performance in numbers

Oddly enough, the Albania international’s goal was not the most impressive piece of play from him on the night, as it was a relatively simple finish into an empty net.

His ability to carve open the Malmo defence to create high-quality opportunities for his teammates was the most eye-catching facet of his performance.

Bajrami created a whopping three ‘big chances’ and ended the match without an assist, as Dessers, Vaclav Cerny, and Neraysho Kasanwirjo all spurned huge openings to find the back of the net from his passes.

He was not the only strong performer on the night for Rangers, though, as Mohamed Diomande starred in the middle of the park and put in his best showing of the season so far.

Mohamed Diomande's best performance so far

The Ivorian dynamo was selected alongside Connor Barron at the base of the midfield for Clement and showcased his quality throughout the match, with his play in and out of possession for the Gers.

Mohamed Diomande

Diomande enjoyed his highest pass completion rate (94%) of the 2024/25 campaign in all competitions, as he provided a reliable outlet on the ball for his side to retain possession and recyle play to dominate and dictate the tempo.

The central midfielder, who was awarded a player rating of 8/10 from The Scotsman, also won 64% of his duels – also a season-high – by dominating the Malmo midfield and ensuring that he won the physical battle in midfield.

Instead of being a lightweight presence that allowed the home side to control the game, Diomande cut out opposition attacks to regain the ball for the Light Blues on numerous occassions.

As you can see in the table above, he outperformed his seasonal averages in the Scottish Premiership in a host of key defensive and offensive metrics.

It was a superb showing from the dynamic midfielder, who buzzed around the pitch to either break up Malmo attacks or piece together forward moves for Rangers, and one that was his best all-round performance of the season so far.

Clement will be hoping for more of the same from the left-footed maestro if the Gers are to be successful in winning silverware between now and May.

India fight back through resolute Pujara, Rohit and Kohli

They still trail England by a sizeable chunk, but have kept the game alive through steadfast batting

Andrew Fidel Fernando27-Aug-20212:55

Harmison: Kohli could be the difference between an India comeback and England win

On day three, Headingley was the scene of a fightback. From India in general, whose openers battled through the early overs, resisted James Anderson, and whose top order lost only the wicket of KL Rahul in the first 47 overs they faced. From Cheteshwar Pujara in particular, who overcame a streak of 12 innings in which he did not pass 50 once, to finish the day as his team’s top-scorer, nine runs short of what would be his first century since January 2019.They still have a mountain to summit if they are to put any real pressure on England. They remain 139 runs in arrears at stumps, and crucially, will have to face the second new ball the moment play starts on day four. But at times on day three, their top order appeared comfortable on a surface that was not offering much in the way of seam movement, even if swing in the air was gleaned with the new ball. You suspect they would have to bat for most of day four – if not part way into day five, to really make England worried. But with the score at 215 for 2, their resistance has a start. Virat Kohli was largely untroubled during his unbeaten 45 as well.England will feel that perhaps their quicks were not menacing enough for long periods. Anderson did not glean the movement he had on day one, and occasionally strayed too far to leg as he went looking for big swing. They also only got nine overs out of Sam Curran, who was wayward and expensive, going at 4.44 an over.Craig Overton made the first breakthrough, when he had Rahul caught brilliantly at second slip by a diving Jonny Bairstow off the last ball of the first session, but it was Ollie Robinson who was England’s best, frequently nibbling balls back into the India batter’s pads. Rahul was given out in Robinson’s fifth over, but managed to overturn that decision on review (the ball was just sliding down leg). In his tenth over, another close shout against Rohit Sharma was (correctly) turned down. He’d eventually get Rohit lbw for 59, but was in good rhythm right through the day, conceding only 40 from his 18 overs. But it was Pujara, whose place in the team was under serious scrutiny, that produced Friday’s definitive performance. Having arrived at the crease without a fifty since February, and a century in over two-and-a-half years, he was done a favour by the England seamers, who kept straying too far down leg – balls Pujara, even in this form – whipped emphatically to the legside boundary. After his first 13 balls, Pujara had three boundaries and 14 runs to his name, and appeared somewhat at ease. Suddenly, he was leaving judiciously, defending resolutely, while waiting for the loose deliveries, which he gleefully punished. Of his first 32 runs, 28 came from boundaries. Only two of those seven boundaries came on the off side.Rohit Sharma goes airborne to uppercut Ollie Robinson for a six•Associated Press

Rohit, meanwhile, was himself defending and leaving happily, as the pair batted out a wicketless second session. He didn’t get as many loose legside deliveries as Pujara, but when he got balls he could hit, he wasn’t shy about hitting out. Late in the first session, a slightly wide bouncer from Robinson disappeared over the third man boundary, having been uppercut – India’s only six so far in the match. He was outscored by Pujara in the course of their 82-run stand, but he got to his half-century off the 125th ball he faced. He’d seemed the most comfortable of all India’s batters in the first two sessions, but nevertheless, could not push on much further after the tea break. He reviewed the lbw decision, having missed a slightly angled ball from Robinson, but ball tracker showed it to be shaving leg stump.Kohli, himself struggling for form, won his first battle with Anderson – who had got him in the first innings – when he clipped him through backward square, and smoked him through extra cover three balls later, early in his innings. At no stage did he really look to impose himself, though. Taking cues from Rohit and Pujara, perhaps, he worked the singles and twos, and largely waited for the wayward balls – Curran providing more than his share of them – to register boundaries. As the skies had been gloomy right through the day, floodlights had been on since the middle session, and when the umpires told Joe Root only slow bowlers could operate after the end of the 69th over, Root brought himself into the attack. Root’s intention, perhaps, was to rush a few overs and get England to that 80 over mark, when the second new ball would be available, and they could take it at the top of day four, their seamer’s having had their night’s rest. The umpires allowed Root and Moeen to bowl until the 80th over, but these were largely bloodless overs; India’s batters were happy to keep gradually adding to their scores. The new-ball showdown awaits first thing on Saturday.

Man Utd board eyeing "outstanding" coach Chelsea nearly hired before Maresca

The Manchester United board are admirers of a Premier League manager who was nearly hired by Chelsea before they appointed Enzo Maresca, according to a new report. Speculation is expected to grow over the coming days and weeks as the future of Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford looks increasingly uncertain.

INEOS concerned with Erik ten Hag's handling of £155,000-a-week Man Utd duo

A new behind-the-scenes claim has emerged.

ByHenry Jackson Oct 7, 2024 Erik ten Hag’s Man Utd future

The Dutchman has come under severe pressure in the last 10 days or so, as his side have failed to beat FC Twente, Tottenham Hotspur, Porto, and Aston Villa. The games against Porto and Villa were expected to play a big role in what happens in his tenure, and while he didn’t lose them, they were far from convincing.

There has been no guarantee that the boss will be sacked in this international break, but there have been no guarantees that he won’t either. Indeed, the Premier League side are already being linked with potential new managers, one of which is Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso.

Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel

Another name is Thomas Tuchel, with reports stating that Man United are lining up a move for Tuchel in the near future. The German has been linked with the Old Trafford hotseat before, as he held talks with the hierarchy over the summer about possibly becoming their new manager, but nothing materialised.

There is now a new name that has emerged on the club’s radar, and he is someone that United will be well aware of, as he manages in the Premier League.

Man Utd admirers of "outstanding" coach who Chelsea nearly hired

According to talkSPORT, the Manchester United board are admirers of Brentford manager Thomas Frank, as well as Tuchel. Frank has been the manager of Brentford since October 2018, when he was promoted to the role after being assistant manager since December 2016.

Frank guided the Bees to the Premier League from the Championship, and he has now established the London side as a mid-table team on England’s biggest stage. The Dane has taken charge of over 100 games in the Premier League, 41 of which he has won, averaging 1.27 points per game.

This report states that Frank, who has been labelled “outstanding” by pundit Troy Deeney, is now among the candidates should United decide to part ways with ten Hag. The Red Devils are holding pre-planned summit meetings over the next two days, with ten Hag’s future expected to be discussed.

United are said to have drawn up a three-man shortlist to replace ten Hag, with Gareth Southgate also a contender alongside Frank and Tuchel. This isn’t the first big job that Frank has been linked with, as the Dane was also a contender for the Chelsea job, but the Blues eventually went with Maresca.

Reports in the last week have shared that Arsenal are interested in Nico Paz of Como, with the former Real Madrid starlet turning heads after sealing a move to Serie A over the summer.

Meanwhile, it is also believed that the north Londoners would bring in a new striker as soon as January if the right opportunity arises. Arsenal have their eye on Eintracht Frankfurt star Omar Marmoush, and well-connected former chief scout Mick Brown has “heard” that they could look to bring in a number nine mid-season, despite the stellar form of Kai Havertz.

You have to credit Mikel Arteta because he’s brought this out of him,” said Brown to Football Insider.

I’ve heard, though, that if there was the right option out there, Arsenal still want to buy somebody in that position. The problem is there’s not a long list of players who are good enough to play that role and are also available to come to the Premier League. Arsenal won’t want to waste any money they have on a player they don’t need.

They’ll be prudent, but I know they’ll be looking for areas they can improve, and I think that will be one even with Havertz playing as well as he has been.”

After missing out on a deal for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, with Arsenal having an offer rejected for the Slovenian alongside Chelsea and Man United (Fabrizio Romano), there are widespread rumours that Edu could go back in for the 21-year-old.

Benjamin Sesko's agents hold talks with Arsenal at the Emirates

According to TEAMtalk this week, the striker’s agents have been to N5 in recent moonths for discussions with club officials.

Indeed, Arteta’s side have apparently promised Sesko’s people that he would be guaranteed game time if he signed for the club. This has given Arsenal an advantage over fellow interested sides like Man United and Bayern Munich, with Sesko enticed by the possibility of playing for Arteta.

The report also claims that Sesko’s representatives have held talks with Arsenal officials at the Emirates in recent months, so it appears there is a very real possibility of the £63 million star making a move there in 2025.

Another intriguing aspect of this is that Sesko has a “gentleman’s agreement” that he can leave Leipzig, either next summer or in 2026, so the Bundesliga side may not even stand in his way if he pushes to sign for Arsenal.

All-star bowling, key blows from Narine and Rana give Knight Riders win

On a tricky, two-paced pitch in Sharjah, Delhi Capitals only managed 127

Karthik Krishnaswamy28-Sep-20212:54

Brathwaite: This is the Sunil Narine that drove fear into batsmen’s hearts

In replacing the injured Andre Russell with a fast bowler rather than an allrounder, Kolkata Knight Riders were placing a lot of faith in Sunil Narine to balance their side. He no longer opens their batting, and before this game had scored 4, 6, 0, 0 and 0* in his only outings with the bat this season.Narine repaid that faith with an influential all-round display that led the Knight Riders to their third win in four games in the UAE leg of IPL 2021.On a tricky, two-paced pitch in Sharjah, Delhi Capitals only managed 127 after being sent in, with Narine looking un-hittable while finishing with 2 for 18 in his four overs. The chase was a stop-start affair, and there were moments when it seemed like the game could go either way, not least when Narine walked in with the Knight Riders needing 32 off 32 with five wickets in hand.Chancing his arm and riding his luck, Narine clattered 21 off 10 balls, quickly reinforcing the smallness of the target. The game wasn’t quite done yet, as Narine and then Tim Southee fell with the Knight Riders at the doorstep of victory, necessitating an injured Lockie Ferguson to come out to bat. But Narine’s hitting ensured the anxiety was kept to a minimum: Nitish Rana’s winning slash to the third man boundary came with 10 balls still left to play.Dhawan and only
Four overs into the match, it wasn’t yet fully apparent how this pitch would play. Knight Riders went all-pace in the powerplay, and Shikhar Dhawan used the pace on offer from Sandeep Warrier and Tim Southee to pick up five fours in 16 balls. An umpire’s call verdict saved Dhawan when a Southee skidder sneaked under his attempted pull in the fourth over, and in the next over he slapped Ferguson straight to cover point to fall for 24 off 20. By then, Knight Riders had worked out that slower balls and cross-seam balls bowled into the pitch was the way to go for the seamers. Capitals 35 for 1 in five overs.Watch the IPL on ESPN+

The Chakravarthy-Narine strangle
From the 6th over to the 11th, it was all about Knight Riders’ mystery spinners, both of whom bowl quick and into the pitch, hitting the shorter side of a good length and denying batters easy hits down the ground. It was the ideal style of spin bowling for this pitch, and the Capitals batters struggled to take the initiative against Varun Chakravarthy and Narine.Only 17 came off the first four overs of spin, with Narine picking up his first wicket with a brilliant bit of deception, switching to a middle-finger-and-ring-finger grip while loading up behind his back, and sneaking an offbreak between bat and pad as Shreyas Iyer looked to push into the off side with an open face.Steven Smith – who had come in for the injured Prithvi Shaw – picked up a pair of deft fours off the first ball of Chakravarthy’s third over, the tenth of Capitals’ innings, and then swept Narine to beat a diving deep backward square leg in the next over, to move to 35 off 27.These were vital hits, with Rishabh Pant struggling for timing at the other end, but just when it seemed like Smith had gained a measure of the conditions, he played on to Ferguson while attempting a pull off a hard-length ball that kept a touch low. With that, Capitals were 77 for 3 in 12.2 overs.Capitals fizzle out
The wicket of Smith came in Ferguson’s second over. It also turned out to be his last, with a hamstring injury forcing him off the field. The selection of Southee for Russell came in handy at this juncture, as did the versatility of Venkatesh Iyer, who sent down four overs of medium-pace, denying both left- and right-handers room while mostly hitting an exaggeratedly full length that denied them elevation as well.He also picked up two key wickets, getting Shimron Hetmyer to hole out to long-off, defeated by the slowness of the pitch, and Axar Patel to chip a catch to midwicket. In between, Narine took his second wicket, trapping Lalit Yadav lbw for a duck. With Pant unable to find the boundary with any real frequency at his end, the Capitals innings ground to a halt, their last nine overs bringing them just 54 runs for the loss of nine wickets. And for the second time this season, they got through an entire innings without hitting a six. They had lost that game as well, against Rajasthan Royals in Mumbai.Gill provides the early momentum
Venkatesh followed up his impressive bowling spell with two fours in the first over of the chase, off Anrich Nortje, before falling to Lalit Yadav’s offspin in the fifth over. His opening partner Shubman Gill also delivered crucial early hits, stepping out in the second over to hit Axar Patel back over his head for the first six of the match, and then clearing long-on when he went after R Ashwin in the seventh over.Nitish Rana punches the air after hitting the winning runs•BCCI

By this time the Knight Riders had also lost Rahul Tripathi, but they were keeping themselves ahead of the required rate. When Rana, who came in at No. 4, swept Ashwin to the backward square leg boundary at the end of the ninth over, Knight Riders needed 66 from 66.Rabada and Ashwin make things interesting
Capitals held Kagiso Rabada back until the 11th over, and he began with five straight dots to Gill, a mixture of hard-length balls and yorkers. Then, seeing Gill step out, Rabada shortened his length and bowled a slower offcutter into the pitch. Too early into his flat-bat slog, Gill picked out the fielder at long-on.When Ashwin followed up that wicket-maiden by getting Eoin Morgan caught at slip, Knight Riders were just beginning to wobble, needing 61 from 52 with six wickets in hand. The importance of going hard
Sometimes, you can overcomplicate T20. Sometimes, one team enjoys a run of luck that sees them through. Dinesh Karthik looked extremely uncertain in a 14-ball innings that ended with a chop-on off Avesh Khan, but by then he’d slashed hard twice at Rabada and Lalit and picked up a pair of edged fours.Rana, meanwhile, had stepped out to Lalit, found himself a long way from the pitch of the ball, and gone through with his shot anyway, and ended up clearing the straight boundary by a distance. Then he’d got one closer to his slot, and slog-swept that cleanly for another six.So by the time Karthik departed, Knight Riders were still in control of the required rate.Narine’s arrival only brought them more luck. Rabada went with the age-old plan of going short at his body, only for a top-edged hook to carry all the way for six. Then he sent down two short balls that didn’t have the same venom in them, and Narine clubbed them for four and six. Twenty-one came off that Rabada over, and Knight Riders now only needed 9 off 24.
