Ryan ten Doeschate digs in to seal another Essex title in Bob Willis Trophy final

Somerset fell short again as Essex batted out 80.3 over to claim the trophy on first-innings lead

George Dobell27-Sep-2020

Essex 337 for 8 (Cook 172, Westley 51, Gregory 6-72) and 179 for 6 (ten Doeschate 46, Leach 3-38) drew with Somerset 301 (Byrom 117, Overton 66, Cook 5-76) and 272 for 7 (Lammonby 116, Porter 4-73) – Essex won the title on first-innings leadEssex survived a nervous final afternoon at Lord’s to secure the inaugural and perhaps only Bob Willis Trophy. While the match ended as a draw, the playing regulations stated that, in such circumstances, the winner would be the side with the higher first innings total. The result mean Essex have won the domestic first-class competition three times in the last four years. Their status as the best red-ball county side in the land is undisputed. But they had to cling on against a determined Somerset on the final day. On a deteriorating pitch which offered assistance to seamers and spinners alike, Essex slipped to 131 for 5 with a minimum of 27.1 overs remaining before Ryan ten Doeschate and Adam Wheater came together to deny Somerset. It means Somerset have finished second in the domestic first-class competition in each of the last three years and four times in the last five. In all, they have been runners-up seven times this century and remain one of only three first-class counties not to have won in the modern era. It may console them a little to know that this competition is not considered on a par with winning the Championship and that, even had they won here, it would not have broken their duck. But it will only be a little. The novelty of finishing second has worn pretty thin for Somerset. It remains to be seen whether the Bob Willis Trophy will ever be contested again. While there are those keen to see it installed as a showpiece event at the end of each season, others are worried whether that will serve to dilute the sense of achievement in winning the County Championship. Is it fair, they ask, to ask a side which has proved itself the best over the course of a season to risk it all on an autumnal encounter where the toss or the conditions might disproportionately define the result? One solution would be to award the Championship title to the side which finishes top at the end of the league stages and then contest this match as a standalone event between the top two sides. But even that would threaten to dilute the value of the Championship victory.Ryan ten Doeschate lunges out to block another delivery•Getty Images

Whether this match worked as a showpiece event is debatable. There were moments, not least when Alastair Cook or Tom Lammonby were batting, when it really did feel like a celebration of county cricket. In the face of the unique challenges posed by this season, it has been an excellent solution. It was probably fitting these two sides qualified, too. Both are stuffed with the products of their own academies – nine players in each team could be considered homegrown – with numerous others having moved on (the likes of Ben Foakes, Dom Bess, Ravi Bopara, Jos Buttler and Jamie Overton) to ply their trade elsewhere. They have consistently pushed for silverware in recent years, supplying players for England in the process. They are, in short, two clubs doing a huge amount right and providing an example to others of what can be achieved on modest budgets. But the challenges posed by the horribly cold weather, the empty stands – something which may prove an issue at any time in a neutral venue – and the need to separate the sides in a drawn match were substantial. And while it just about worked as a one-off event, it didn’t really leave you wanting more, either. As Tom Abell, the Somerset captain put it: “The County Championship is the best first-class competition in the world.” It probably requires nurturing more than tinkering.Earlier Craig Overton had helped Somerset thrash another 45 runs in 8.1 overs before the declaration came. The target – 237 in a minimum of 80 overs – probably looked generous. And, for a while on the final day, with Cook batting serenely, it appeared Essex may coast there. But his dismissal saw them abandon plans of completing an outright win and settle instead for survival over the last 40 overs of the match.Cook looked most underwhelmed by the decision from Russell Warren, the umpire, to adjudge him out caught behind. Replays were inconclusive – it is possible the sound as ball passed bat was caused by the bat clipping the pad – but it is hard to recall another dismissal in Cook’s career when he has stood so long and made his displeasure more obvious.Either way, the wicket appeared to jolt Essex. By then, they had already lost Nick Browne, edging a delivery from Lewis Gregory, who finished with eight in the match, that demanded a stroke and bounced a little, and Tom Westley, who had been trapped in front by the persevering Overton. Jack Leach, without a first-class wicket since last November, when he dismissed Tim Southee in Mount Maunganui, gained lavish turn and bounce from his first delivery and broke his drought with the wicket of Dan Lawrence, who was defeated by what appeared to be an arm ball. But Paul Walter was stubborn and ten Doeschate was solid. And while the former was eventually removed by Leach, courtesy of one that turned from round the wicket, Wheater joined ten Doeschate in a sixth-wicket stand that contributed only 48 runs but denied Somerset for 27 overs. By the time ten Doeschate fell, top-edging a sweep, there were only moments remaining. The draw and the trophy were secured. “I couldn’t have asked for anyone better to be out there in that situation,” Westley, the Essex captain in his first year in the role, said afterwards.Jack Leach struck to remove Dan Lawrence•Getty Images

“I’m incredibly proud of all the boys and management,” Westley added. “This [tournament] may never happen again, so to win it is amazing. We may be the only club to ever win the Bob Willis Trophy. It’s a continuation of success we’ve had in red-ball cricket over the last few years. It’s right up there with winning the County Championship last year.”Abell was more subdued. “Disappointment is the overwhelming emotion,” he said. “We were second to Essex last year and we were desperate not to be again. Coming so close a number of times, we feel it is within touching distance. This adds fuel to the fire. But the fire is already burning pretty deep within everyone.”Westley was quick to praise the club’s culture, academy and willingness to “give our own a go”, but it was noticeable that he also picked out the imports for their influence. Simon Harmer was described as a “match-winner”, coach Anthony McGrath was praised for him ability to “galvanise this side like I’ve never seen at Essex in previous years” and ten Doeschate, the previous captain, credited for instilling belief and transforming the club from “a fairly mediocre Division Two team” to one which believed it could be the best in the country. The message? Providing opportunities for homegrown players is crucial, but let’s not forget the positive influence of Kolpaks, overseas and the like. There’s a bigger picture here. To have completed this competition in these circumstances, to have provided opportunities for young players, to have kept the game relevant and to have provided some online entertainment for spectators at a time when it was sorely needed, has been something of a triumph. And a triumph that not all other sports have managed to achieve. The game still faces some substantial challenges – many of the players on show here may well be on furlough again by the end of the week – but this competition has provided a reminder of the better times that lie ahead. Maybe we’ll come to look back on it as county cricket’s Dunkirk moment.

Arsenal plot first bid and negotiations to sign £50 million England star

Arsenal could launch an opening bid to kickstart negotiations over signing a £50 million England star this summer, as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen one key area of his side.

Edu and Arteta planning defensive overhaul at Arsenal

Assisted by the club's sporting director, Edu, Arsenal's manager could oversee a defensive overhaul in the coming weeks – despite the Gunners boasting a better defensive record than any other Premier League team last season.

No other top flight side conceded fewer goals than Arteta's men over 2023/2024, with Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba shining at the heart of Arteta's defence yet again, but a cause for concern is their lack of central defensive depth behind the pair.

Indeed, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Jakub Kiwior and Ben White are all capable of playing centre-back, but Arteta seems more inclined to use them as makeshift full-back options at this moment in time.

Arsenal are reportedly interested in Euro 2024 star Ferdi Kadioglu, after his impressive season at Fenerbahce, so perhaps the Turkey international full-back's signing would allow Arteta to deploy one of Tomiyasu, Kiwior or White at centre-half more often.

However, reports suggest that Arsenal are in fact keen on bringing in another central defender, who can provide solid back up to Saliba and Gabriel. Reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano claims Arsenal are big fans of Ajax defender Jorrel Hato, and Gunners chiefs believe they're in fact frontrunners to seal a potential deal.

"Arsenal are also working on their future, we know they have many wonderkids in the academy, but there is a player they love. He is playing at Ajax, a centre-back and it is Jorrel Hato,” Romano said on the Here We Go podcast last month.

“Hato signed a new deal at Ajax two months ago, but Arsenal are still following him. They believe Hato is a top centre-back in terms of potential. Keep an eye on Arsenal, they are still pushing for Hato, they believe they are frontrunners in the race to sign him. Let’s see if they can make it happen this summer or if it has to be in the future.”

Another defensive acquisition to watch out for, and one who would greatly bolster Arteta's ranks, is Crystal Palace stalwart Marc Guehi.

Arsenal could launch opening Guehi bid to kickstart talks

The Eagles ace, who was rewarded for his excellent form last season with a call-up to Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 England squad, started for the Three Lions against Serbia and earned plaudits for his performance.

Arteta and co are now ready to test Palace's resolve when it comes to selling the 23-year-old. According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal could kickstart talks by making an opening bid for Guehi, but they face competition from Newcastle United in this regard.

Marc Guehi for England

He's valued at around £50 million by Selhurst Park chiefs, which Arsenal consider too steep for the time being, but it isn't ruled out that they could try and whittle the price down in negotiations.

It'll also be interesting to see whether Guehi would consider a move to north London, as the presence of Saliba and Gabriel means he'd have to battle much more for regular game time.

Jos Buttler targets T20 momentum as England resume World Cup build-up

Mental wellbeing high on team’s agenda as England embark on first tour of Covid era

Andrew Miller16-Nov-2020Jos Buttler says that England’s white-ball cricketers must target victory in South Africa later this month, in order to build the same sort of momentum into their T20 World Cup campaign that they produced in their march to the 50-over title last year. However, speaking on the eve of England’s departure for South Africa, where the squad will be entering another bio-secure bubble ahead of three T20s and three ODIs at Cape Town and Paarl, Buttler added that there would be an extra focus on mental health during the tour, with players encouraged to seek support if they find the lockdown lifestyle getting them down.It will be the first time that England have undertaken a tour since the Covid pandemic began, although ten members of the tour party, Buttler included, have recently returned from a six-week stint at the IPL.And while three of those players – Jofra Archer, Ben Stokes and Sam Curran – will be rested from the ODI leg of the tour, Buttler himself said he was happy to put himself forward for both series, having been able to spend time with his wife and daughter out in the UAE, and having played just three ODIs since the World Cup final at Lord’s 16 months ago.”South Africa’s a great tour and we won’t get to fully enjoy it as we usually would,” Buttler said. “But I think everyone’s become accustomed to what it’s going to be like.”Most of us had an Xbox quite high on the priority list, then there’s Netflix, and reading books,” he added. “But if you’re feeling under pressure or not quite feeling yourself, it’s about having the confidence to open up and talk about it.Jos Buttler looks on in England training•Getty Images

“I think all of us will go through it at different stages where you feel a bit homesick, or claustrophobic at not being able to get out and about, as you might usually want to. We just have to make sure that we’re very aware of that, and one thing that the ECB is excellent at is looking after the players’ mental wellbeing.”Despite being a comparatively low-profile tour, Buttler said there would be an onus on role clarity in the 20-over format in particular, with the next T20 World Cup scheduled to take place in India in just under a year’s time.”To go and win the series is the ultimate aim, of course,” Buttler said. “We’re building towards a World Cup but one thing we did very well in 50-over cricket was win and learn at the same time.”We’re building into a tournament, so of course winning gives you confidence. When you can play well, you gain role clarity in the side, and you can try to nail down your 11 and 15 [squad].”England surged to the No. 1 ODI ranking in the course of the four-year cycle from the 2015 to 2019 World Cups, and after losing away to South Africa in 2015-16, they lost just one more bilateral series in 16 attempts, away to India the following winter.ALSO READ: England tour gets green light from SA sports ministry”By the end of that cycle, the 50-overs team nearly picked itself, and that’s a great place to be as a side,” Buttler said. “It gives a lot of confidence to guys playing a lot of games with each other, because when you head into a tournament in high-pressure situations, you’re very familiar with your own role and what you expect of your team-mates.”The postponed 2020 T20 World Cup in Australia – the final of which had been due to take place at Melbourne this past weekend – has now been pushed back to 2022, with England’s 50-over World Cup defence coming the following winter in India. And Buttler admitted that the absences of Stokes, Archer and Curran from the ODI series was a reflection of the format’s place in the pecking order in the current international cycle.”With such a congested fixture list, it’s always important for the ECB to find time for guys to be able to rest and get enough time away from the game to be in a good headspace,” Buttler said. “With two T20 World Cups around the corner, it seems that ODIs just at the moment are the ones that the guys look to be resting from.”The tour will be taking place against a backdrop of instability, with CSA facing the prospect of being stripped of its status as a national governing body following months of turmoil. And while Buttler insisted that such issues were beyond the remit of the squad, he did admit to a tinge of relief when it was confirmed, at the eleventh hour, that the trip would be going ahead as planned.”We heard what had happened with the board a few weeks and months ago and we were all expecting that would be sorted out for our tour,” Buttler said.”I’d been reading in the paper that the tour was in doubt but Ashley Giles [England director] got in touch with all the players to say we’re confident it will go ahead but we’ll obviously keep everyone in the loop.”I think everyone’s grateful that it’s going to be going on, especially so close to your departure date when you’re starting to really gear up to go. But it’s nothing to do with us, we players are just looking forward to cricket and the boards can take care of those kind of things.”

West Ham in the mix for £21m Paqueta replacement who’s Payet 2.0

West Ham United supporters will understandably sit on the fence at this maiden stage of Julen Lopetegui's tenure, and the different aspects of the forthcoming weeks will determine which side the lion's share decides to jump off.

Last season's ninth-place Premier League finish has left the Hammers looking ahead to domestic contests next season, which, in some ways, provides Lopetegui with a calm and solid foundation from which to build upwards.

There are several pressing concerns. Despite signing 18-year-old winger Luis Guilherme from Palmeiras for £25.5m, more depth could be required as Ghanaian, Mohammed Kudus considers pushing for an exit after just one year.

West Ham forward Mohammed Kudus.

Perhaps more concerningly, Lucas Paqueta's FA betting charge could see him banished from professional football, swiping West Ham of an elite-level playmaker.

It would be pertinent for Lopetegui to prudently approach the situation and seek a successor, and indeed, recent reports suggest that that might be the case.

West Ham eyeing Paqueta replacement

According to Get French Football News, West Ham are set to rival Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain for the signing of Lyon attacking midfielder Rayan Cherki.

Cherki, who is entering the final year of his contract at the Groupama Stadium, is expected to be sold this summer as the Ligue 1 outfit push to raise €100m (£85m) in player sales to combat financial concerns.

Lyon star Rayan Cherki

Aged 20, Cherki is a highly talented player with a sharp creative sense and could prove to be a bargain for the London Stadium side given his reported price tag of just €25m (£21m).

Rayan Cherki's season in numbers

Cherki might be in the early stage of his professional career but he has made quite an impression for Lyon, already having notched 17 goals and 25 assists across 141 appearances.

Silky and artful, Cherki provided an influential and creative 2023/24 campaign despite Lyon's shocking start to the season, with talent scout Jacek Kulig even describing him as the "pure difference-maker" back in March.

Indeed, as per Sofascore, he scored just one goal across his 19 starts in the French top flight but also contributed with six assists, a product of his constant flow of creativity, averaging 1.3 key passes per game and keeping it crisp with an 81% pass success rate.

Lyon midfielder Rayan Cherki

More impressive, perhaps, is his combative disposition on the field and his unceasing desire to drive the ball forward, completing 2.5 dribbles per game and averaging 4.8 successful duels to boot.

He was noted as a "player with exceptional qualities" by his former manager, Rudi Garcia, and after some polish and refinement, could prove to be a tailor-made Premier League star.

West Ham may well be the perfect club to lift him toward his full potential, especially given that he could be the second coming of an iconic former Hammer.

Why West Ham are interested in Cherki

We're talking, of course, about Dimitri Payet, whose short but spectacular stint in east London has cemented cult status that will hang at the top of the division's sprawling tapestry for time immemorial.

West Ham signed Payet from French club Marseille for just £10m in 2015, with his almighty efforts in English football leading to cascades of praise, even dubbed "one of the most important players in Europe" by manager and compatriot Zinedine Zidane.

He posted 12 goals and 15 assists across his opening term for the Hammers but departed at the midpoint of the 2016/17 campaign, citing home sickness after the Irons regressed in cohesion and performance level.

Former West Ham star Dimitri Payet

His goal haul was impressive but barely scratches the surface concerning Payet's brilliance. This, truly, was a barnstorming, script-overhauling machine, with his genius on the ball leaving the Premier League in awe.

With eagle-eyed vision, unmatched playmaking quality and a talismanic effect that few can replicate by half, the former France international gave West Ham some magical moments, and that could be emulated in the form of Cherki, who could also be landed for a bargain fee, welcomed from over the channel.

As per FBref, the young Frenchman ranks among the top 12% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shots taken, the top 15% for assists, the top 8% for passes attempted, the top 4% for progressive passes and the top 1% for successful take-ons per 90.

Cherki has the level of technique and vision to replicate Payet's dizzying heights with the Hammers, principally featuring centrally but also competent when placed on either flank.

It's quite clear that Cherki has the talent to succeed in a squad like West Ham's especially when considering that he is not too far off Paqueta's exemplary defensive and energy-centred metrics.

The Brazilian playmaker sits deeper than most attacking midfielders and maintains a robust and all-action approach to his game. Nonetheless, Cherki has still managed to outpoint in regarding progressive passing while also eclipsing him for ball-carrying metrics.

This underscores the Lyon starlet's athletic ability and penchant for making things happen. At West Ham, at the dawn of a new era, this could be crucial.

West Ham ranked 15th for big chances created in the Premier League last season, seemingly unable to maintain the kind of attacking spark to truly click into gear when on the advance.

With Cherki added to the fold, it could be the initiation of a transformation akin to that of when Payet waltzed in. Such is the French phenom's prodigious talent, and such is the importance of enjoying a positive transfer window for Lopetegui, who needs to counter several pressing issues with some exciting signings.

Arsenal placing bid to sign £200,000-per-week forward alongside Calafiori

Arsenal are tabling their bid and personal terms to sign a £200,000-per-week forward, alongside their widely reported talks over a deal for Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori.

Arsenal in talks to sign Calafiori from Bologna this summer

The Italy international, who impressed under Luciano Spalletti at Euro 2024 before the Azzurri's last 16 defeat to Switzerland, is now a highly sought-after centre-back across Europe.

Arsenal offered £290,000-per-week forward who Wright called "top drawer"

The Gunners have been approached.

Calafiori was already turning heads after a fine season with Bologna under ex-boss Thiago Motta, where he managed 30 Serie A appearances as one of their star performers and helped guide them to a Champions League place.

However, the Euros has elevated his profile further, and the 22-year-old was definitely a sore miss through suspension in the knockout rounds when the Swiss ultimately humbled Italy.

Arsenal sporting director Edu and manager Mikel Arteta have been heavily linked with signing a new central defender to alternate with star pair William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes.

Arteta has been left personally impressed by Calafiori, according to some reports, and reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal have presented an important proposal to the player.

Following on from this, Romano wrote on X this morning that Arsenal are preparing for further talks with Bologna over signing Calafiori, with the Serie A side and Premier League title hopefuls already having an excellent business relationship after the Takehiro Tomiyasu deal.

The former FC Basel starlet will cost a premium, though, as the Swiss side included a 50 per cent sell-on clause when they sold Calafiori to Bologna. The widely reported price tag is set at around £42 million, so it will be interesting to see just how high the Gunners are willing to go.

Amid their efforts to do a deal for Calafiori, reports in Spain claim that Arsenal are still very much in the race for Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams.

Arsenal placing bid and personal terms to sign Nico Williams

Much like Calafiori, the Spanish starlet has seriously impressed at Euro 2024, which will only attract even more suitors.

Diario AS state that Arsenal are 'going all out' for the 21-year-old, who racked up 19 assists in all competitions for Bilbao last season. Arsenal are 'putting money on the table' for Williams, on both the club and player side, meaning they're placing their bids in terms of fee and terms.

The £200,000-per-week winger's contract includes a £49 million release clause as well, according to AS, but Arteta's side face stiff competition from Chelsea when it comes to securing his signature. Barcelona were thought to be the frontrunners, but AS believe they do not have the finances to pull off a move.
