Asia Cup champions Bangladesh women won their second title in as many years by beating Thailand women in the final of the Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifer in Dundee on Saturday. A valiant and unbeaten opening effort of 71 off 60 balls from Sanjida Islam and two wickets each from spinners Nahida Akter and Shaila Sharmin highlighted their 70-run win as they defended 130.As both teams had already qualified for the Women’s T20 World Cup to be played in Australia next year, Bangladesh’s win on Saturday put them in Group A (Australia, India, New Zealand and Sri Lanka) whereas Thailand head to Group B (England, South Africa, West Indies and Pakistan).”We are very happy to be heading to Australia for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in February. Being at the world stage helps us grow the women’s game back home in Bangladesh. We hope they can watch and be inspired to play,” Bangladesh captain Salma Khatun said. The Bangladesh openers made full use of their decision to bat with a partnership of 68 in 10 overs before Murshida Khatun was bowled by legspinner Suleeporn Laomi for 33 off 34 balls. Sanjida hardly got anymore support from the rest of the line-up but her maiden T20I fifty carried Bangladesh all the way till the end as she struck six fours and three sixes in all. No other Bangladesh batsman scored in double digits as Jahanara Alam was run out for 3 and Fahima Khatun was stumped on her first ball which was a wide.Thailand stuttered in their chase early by starting slow and losing three wickets in the first six overs. Their top four fell for single-digit scores, totalling 14 runs in all, as Nahida dismissed the openers in her first two overs. They couldn’t put on any substantial partnership until Wongpaka Liengprasert and captain Sornnarin Tippoch (8) came together for 24 runs for the fifth wicket. Tippoch was soon caught on the legside off Sharmin, leaving Thailand with a tall task of scoring 90 runs in the last five overs. Liengprasert was boweld by Sharmin for 11 off 29 in the 16th over and Ratanaporn Padunglerd’s unbeaten 15 off 14 with a four and a six only reduced Thailand’s margin of defeat.

This nine-goal Leeds target could be signed as Bamford’s dream heir

The January transfer window slammed shut at the start of this month and Leeds United have already been linked with a new signing ahead of the summer.

Latest Leeds transfer news

According to the Daily Record, the Whites are one of a number of clubs eyeing up a swoop to sign Kilmarnock centre-forward Bobby Wales at the end of the season.

The report claims that Leeds, Ipswich Town, and Stoke City are just three of the many teams showing an interest in the 18-year-old number nine.

Daniel Farke.

It states that they have been keeping tabs on his performances having been impressed by his exceptional form on loan with Alloa in League One in Scotland.

Daniel Farke could unearth his dream heir to Patrick Bamford by winning the race to sign the prolific young marksman as a long-term addition to his squad.

Patrick Bamford's form this season

The former England international has had mixed success on the pitch this season as he endured a difficult first half of the campaign and has excelled in 2024.

Bamford failed to provide a single goal or assist for his side in his first 16 appearances in the Championship this term, as the likes of Georginio Rutter and Joel Piroe kept their places in the team ahead of him.

Patrick Bamford

However, the 30-year-old striker has played nine matches in 2024 and contributed with five goals and two assists in all competitions for the Whites.

This shows that his form has drastically improved in comparison to the first half of the season, as the experienced forward has provided a regular threat in front of goal this year.

The former Chelsea prospect, who has scored 56 goals in 176 appearances for Leeds, turns 31 this year and the Whites head coach may already have one eye on what life may look like after the forward moves on from Elland Road.

Why Wales could be Bamford's long-term heir

Farke could unearth his heir to Bamford's position in the squad by signing Wales, as young gem will be 21 by the time the current Leeds striker's contract expires in the summer of 2026.

The 18-year-old, who turns 19 in the summer, is a promising talent who could develop further and gain more experience over the next couple of seasons before emerging as a first-team option for the club, if they win the race for his signature in the next transfer window.

Stats via Transfermarkt

As you can see in the table above, the teenage marksman has already showcased his quality in a senior environment with seven goals in the third tier of Scottish football on loan with Alloa.

Wales has scored nine goals in 18 appearances in all competitions this season, having scored two goals in two Challenge Cup games for Kilmarnock B at the start of the campaign, which is a return of one every other match on average.

Interestingly, all seven of those League One goals have come in his last eight outings for Alloa, which suggests that he has had a similar season to Bamford with his contrasting form.

The Scotland U19 international, who played ten Premiership matches last term, has showcased his impressive goalscoring potential at first-team level at such a young age, which is why he could be a dream heir to Leeds' number nine given his age, potential, and goalscoring quality.

Wales could arrive in the summer and either go out on loan to develop further or stay and learn from the likes of Piroe and Bamford before, hopefully, taking over from the latter in the years to come.

MARCA DO BRASILEIRÃO

Hamilton Masakadza bids farewell with match-winning 71

The Zimbabwe captain’s 42-ball knock powered his side to their first-ever T20I victory over Afghanistan

The Report by Liam Brickhill20-Sep-2019

Hamilton Masakadza walks out to a guard of honour in his final match in Zimbabwe colours•Raton Gomes/BCB

Hamilton Masakadza signed off an acclaimed international career in style, in Chattogram, leading Zimbabwe’s 156 chase with 71 to snap Afghanistan’s world-record winning streak in T20Is at 12. His 42-ball knock also helped secure his country’s first-ever victory over these opponents in the shortest format. Zimbabwe weathered a bruising opening stand between Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Hazratullah Zazai, Chris Mpofu snaffling a T20I career-best 4 for 30 as Afghanistan were restricted to 155 for 8. Masakadza then led Zimbabwe’s charge with the bat one last time, swatting five characteristically muscular sixes in his match-winning innings that set up a seven-wicket win.Afghanistan openers make merryRahmanullah Gurbaz fiddled his way through five dot balls in the first over of the innings, from left-arm spinner Ainsley Ndlovu, but he and Hazratullah Zazai quickly made up for the sluggish start thereafter. By the time the Powerplay was up, Zazai had gone some way towards making amends for his mediocre returns in this tri-series, Gurbaz had spanked three sixes, and Afghanistan had raced to 55 at a canter.A withering blow to the midsection via a Kyle Jarvis indipper took the wind out of Zazai but, after a few deep breaths, the batsman barely slowed the momentum as he shook the stinger off with a six off Sean Williams’ left-arm spin. Gurbaz motored into the 40s with 10 runs off two Ryan Burl long hops, and was then gifted a second life when Regis Chakabva spilled a high – but regulation – chance in the outfield.Zazai was eventually dismissed for 31 as the opening stand was snapped at 83, but Gurbaz and Shafiqullah continued to make merry. Shafiqullah biffed a Tino Mutombodzi legbreak over long -ff to bring up the hundred, while Gurbaz notched up a maiden T20I fifty from 40 balls, in the 13th over. Afghanistan appeared primed to launch a blistering attack in the second half of the innings.Mpofu leads Zimbabwe’s fightbackZimbabwe, however, had other ideas and their fightback was spearheaded by veteran seamer Mpofu. He was Zimbabwe’s quickest bowler of the evening, topping out at around 136kmph, but he also varied his pace cleverly and was rewarded with a career-best T20I haul. Mpofu’s efforts raised the energy of those around him, and from 107 for 1, Afghanistan quickly lost their way, losing 7 for 48.Mpofu got things going by removing a slog-sweeping Shafiqullah with a slow offcutter, and then accounted for Mohammad Nabi in the next over. With Gurbaz bowled behind his legs sweeping at Williams and Najibullah Zadran slicing a Mutombodzi googly to short third man in quick succession, the stuffing was knocked out of Afghanistan’s middle order and their charge quickly lost momentum. Gulbadin Naib and Rashid Khan both cleared the boundary in their short cameos, but Mpofu struck twice in the final over of the innings to dismiss debutant Fazal Niazai and former captain Asghar Afghan to keep Afghanistan’s total in check.Once more unto the breach, ‘Mudhara’ Hami, once moreMore than eighteen years after he walked out onto the field for the first time as an international cricketer, Hamilton Masakadza strode out one last time as Zimbabwe began their chase. In a touching tribute, both teams lined up to give Masakadza a guard of honour on his final walk to the middle, and he signed off in style. It was Brendan Taylor who was first out of the blocks, sweeping and lofting Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s first two balls to the boundary, but it was Masakadza, wearing a special edition T-shirt with his nickname ‘Mudhara’ (chiShona for ‘old man’) printed on the back, who stole the show. Playing with a freedom that had been lacking from his game amid tumultuous times in Zimbabwean cricket of late, Masakadza showed his team just what they would be missing. His first boundary was perhaps his best, and certainly the cleanest strike on either side all evening. It was also a trademark Masakadza stroke, the Zimbabwe captain getting down on one knee to swat a full-pace delivery from Dawlat Zadran up and over deep backward square.Chakabva, shovelling virtually everything into the leg side no matter the line, proved the perfect foil, repeatedly handing the strike back over to his captain. At the other end, an unshackled Masakadza planted Nabi twice into the stands, racing past fifty from the 27th ball he faced. Rashid was drilled down the ground and then over deep midwicket. Masakadza entered the 70s with a farewell hundred very much a possibility, but it was not to be. Aiming once more for the stands, he was caught in the deep off Dawlat Zadran. But the job was as good as done. Shifting through the gears, Chakabva took the requirement to under a run a ball, and Williams saw Zimbabwe home. Masakadza was able to leave the international game with a smile on his face, and a landmark Zimbabwe win under his belt.

Sunderland could’ve beat Norwich if one star was axed from the game quicker

Sunderland are still yet to pick up a single point since Mike Dodds took back the reins as interim Black Cats boss, with Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Norwich City just another crushing blow in a shambolic season.

Josh Sargent would break Sunderland hearts in the final ten minutes at Carrow Road, the clinical American striker powering home with ice in his veins after a long ball into the Black Cats' box had caused widespread panic.

Now onto 16 defeats in the Championship, Dodds' side are crying out for an attacker of Sargent's ilk to lead the line at the Stadium of Light with this striker in particular letting the abysmal Black Cats down on their travels yesterday.

Luis Semedo's performance vs Sunderland in numbers

Young Portuguese summer recruit Luis Semedo would be handed just his second start of the season against the Canaries, a personnel decision by Dodds that just didn't work when viewing the 20-year-old's lacklustre showing.

The former Benfica prodigy would only muster up 12 touches of the ball from his 66 minutes on the Carrow Road turf, cutting an isolated figure in Norfolk as a result.

Unable to register a single shot on Angus Gunn's goal also, Semedo was unsurprisingly hauled off by Dodds for other attackers to get their moment to shine late on in the second half.

It wasn't a real surprise to see Semedo's poor performance receive scathing criticism in the aftermath of the 1-0 defeat therefore, with BBC Sport Tyne and Wear pundit Gary Bennett laying into the out-of-sorts striker on commentary duties.

He stated that Semedo looked "lost"against David Wagner's hosts, Bennett was also unimpressed by the youngster's commitment to the cause – further lambasting the 20-year-old for "just jogging about" at points.

Dodds, in retrospect, might well have kept the ex-Benfica sensation on the pitch for far too long to the overall detriment of his side.

Instead, if the interim Black Cats boss had just introduced Nazariy Rusyn into the contest quicker, Sunderland could have unsettled Norwich a lot more and stood more of a chance at picking up a big three points.

Nazariy Rusyn's performance vs Norwich in numbers

Rusyn was far more dangerous going forward from his short cameo against Norwich than Semedo managed from a forgettable 66 minutes, managing to fire two on-target efforts at Gunn's net from only 24 minutes played.

One of those opportunities would go down as a big chance missed, the Ukrainian attacker far more of a nuisance for Norwich to contain than the passive Semedo.

Over the course of a full match, Rusyn might well have been too tricky for the Canaries to thwart with Dodds then staring at more points on the board than another unwelcome zero.

Winning 100% of his duels at Carrow Road too, the 25-year-old could well be in line to start Sunderland's next Championship clash against Leicester City to try and unsettle the Foxes who are faltering at the top of the division.

The Black Cats are experiencing a far worse wobble than Enzo Maresca's league leaders, however, with Dodds just trying to piece together currently what his best XI is.

Nazariy Rusyn.

Looking at the 1-0 defeat on the road at Norwich, Semedo should be axed for Rusyn to lead the line on Tuesday night in one change Dodds will consider.

£60,000-p/w Newcastle star to return from injury earlier than Howe expected

Newcastle United have endured their fair share of injuries this season, with Eddie Howe patching together his squad throughout the campaign. The former boss has at least received a major boost on that front, however, with one star set to return earlier than expected.

Newcastle injury news

The Magpies are already without the likes of Nick Pope, Joelinton and Kieran Trippier as the Premier League season approaches its final stages. And those injury problems have far from helped Newcastle's form, with their European ambitions becoming more and more unlikely every week, especially after their latest defeat against Chelsea.

With two wins in their last six games and mounting injury problems, Newcastle have been left with it all to do if they are to qualify for some form of European football this season. As their Stamford Bridge defeat showed, however, Howe's task is a difficult one in the coming months and one that could have so easily been worsened by further injury news.

Newcastle could sell a player who's earning 9x more than Lewis Miley

The experienced Toon star needs to be moved on this year.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Mar 13, 2024

The Magpies boss initially shared concerns over the extent of Anthony Gordon's injury against Chelsea, saying via Premier Injuries: "Gordon looks like a knee problem and it doesn’t look too good at the moment; it is unclear. Hopefully, we can give him that in the next couple of days, and we can get him seen to."

Since then, those fears have fortunately been eased to finally hand Howe some positive news. According to Jacob Whitehead of The Athletic, Gordon has avoided any serious damage to his knee and could even be back for the Manchester City game as soon as this weekend. Even if it's not the City game, the Newcastle star will reportedly be available for England selection in the upcoming international break.

"Great" Gordon's return will be a welcome boost

In a season to forget, Gordon has been one of the few bright sparks at St James' Park, fully living up to his £40m price tag and £60k per-week salary, which initially raised eyebrows. If the 23-year-old makes his return as soon as the City game, then Newcastle will stand a far greater chance of causing an upset in the FA Cup last eight and making an appearance at Wembley to help salvage their campaign.

Anthony Gordon.

Former manager Frank Lampard was well aware of Gordon's quality even during his Everton days, saying after the winger's goal against Brentford in 2022: “It’s what I wanted from him. It was a great run, great timing and a great pass, and his composure was great. I’m delighted for him and thought his all-round performance was great. There’s pressure on him and I thought he handled it brilliantly.”

With ten goals and seven assists to his name so far this season, Gordon has done enough to be considered for a spot in Gareth Southgate's England squad, signalling even more relief that his injury is not as severe as first feared.

Aaron Finch needs runs to shore up T20I captaincy

He will want a strong start to the season against Sri Lanka and Pakistan to ensure there’s no chance of history repeating

Daniel Brettig26-Oct-2019Anyone of the view that Steve Smith is entitled to automatically return to Australia’s captaincy the moment his Newlands leadership ban elapses at the end of March, would do well to remember the curious circumstances in which Aaron Finch was relieved of the T20 post.Three years ago, Finch had led the Australia T20 team to wins over Pakistan and South Africa but a losing series against India – despite scores of 44 and 74 – saw him not only replaced as captain by Smith for the 2016 T20 World Cup in India but also dropped from the side. While Smith was at that stage Australia’s undisputed best batsman and captain in the other two formats, the sequence of events took a while for Finch to recover from, particularly as he found himself fighting unfamiliar emotions when recalled at the back end of an ICC event where the Australians would ultimately lose again to India and be knocked out in the quarter-finals. That match stands as the most recent T20 Smith has played, with Finch since being able to reassert his leadership of Australia in both white-ball formats, albeit with diminishing batting returns.ALSO READ: Langer’s bid to turn Australia into a T20 fortressSince a personally successful T20 triangular series in Zimbabwe last July, Finch has cobbled a mere 75 runs at 7.50 in 10 T20I innings, a sequence coinciding with his abortive trial in Test cricket and also a slim run of ODI scores that saw numerous calls for him to relinquish the 50-over captaincy. However, the selectors kept faith and were rewarded by runs and sound leadership during the World Cup in England, guiding Australia to a semi-final berth that had looked highly unlikely a few months before. Finch knows he needs runs.”I don’t think you’re ever assured,” Finch said of keeping the captaincy until next year’s T20 World Cup on home soil. “In the end it comes down to you doing your main job first and that’s for me making runs. If I can look after that I’m sure everything else will take care of itself, but it’s honestly nothing I’ve thought about.”Instead, Finch has been committed to establishing continuity for Australia’s T20 team, and also the development of a brand of cricket that will take something from the coach Justin Langer’s wildly successful spell mentoring the Perth Scorchers, and also Finch’s own time as captain of the Melbourne Renegades, who defeated the Melbourne Stars in a thrilling BBL final at the tail end of last summer.Aaron Finch’s form has become a problem for Australia ahead of the World Cup•Getty Images

“You want to be aggressive no doubt, we want wickets in the powerplay and we want runs in the powerplay,” Finch said. “A lot of games that is the most crucial part, but then again the last four overs are really important. Having the best death bowlers in the world, and if we’re not there at the moment, getting guys as close to the best in the world as what we can possibly have, having guys attack it in the powerplay, taking the game on, making a real play and putting pressure back on the opposition.”By having similar squads for 12 months will give each player a lot of confidence in each other to be able to do that role and make sure there’s 100% faith and everyone’s bought into the game plan.”The long term thinking in Australia’s selection has been underlined by the presence of Ashton Turner, who is still recovering from shoulder surgery and thus will be somewhat restricted in where he can field. However, he is a better chance to be throwing and also bowling at 100% in a year’s time than Chris Lynn, who was omitted from the squad and has now carried a chronic shoulder problem for several years.”He’s not bowling yet, he’s batting no problem at all,” Finch said of Turner. “His throwing’s a little bit more limited to inside the ring, so that’s something that’s going to have to be monitored. I think there’s been a couple of setbacks along the way with his rehab over the last couple of months. But if required he can throw well enough to get a run out or be really effective in the ring.”I think the fact we’ve got guys who have had surgeries, there’s going to be injuries and niggles along the way, which will be managed, but fielding is a huge focus for us, so come October next year hopefully everyone is fully fit to throw at 100%, anywhere they’re required in the ground.”An area in which Australia will need to find a greater level of proficiency is death bowling, something the vice-captain Pat Cummins has pinpointed as his most critical skill to develop and hone over the next 12 months. “The biggest difference between Test bowling and T20 bowling is just the death bowling side of it as a quick bowler,” Cummins said. “Try to nail some yorkers and some slower balls. For Finch, the contrast between the likes of Cummins and Mitchell Starc – world class performers but often rested from T20 duty – and the more extensively T20 tested Kane Richardson or Sean Abbott, who has replaced the injured Andrew Tye, will make for some intriguing selections. “Starcy’s proven himself in both the shorter formats of the game that he’s as good as anyone in the world,” Finch said. “Probably Bumrah’s the benchmark in terms of death bowling in the world, but Starcy’s very close to him, and it’s about getting guys enough experience at international level, but also having the skills to do it.”I think we’re really lucky we’ve got Kane Richardson who did a great job for us in the one dayers, through India, Dubai and then when he had his opportunity in the World Cup. AJ’s a quality bowler and it’s unfortunate we’re not going to have him most likely for these two series. It’s about guys around the country as well, putting a lot of pressure on the players that are in the squad at the moment to put their hand up and make themselves known through one-day performances and Big Bash.”When you get the opportunity to nail those death overs it’s so important that you’re putting pressure on.”
