Dom Bess, Jack Leach run through Notts as Somerset take unexpected lead

Bess snares five-for, Leach three as hosts lead by 92 runs

“What news of Essex?” It sounds like the opening line from a scene in one of Shakespeare’s history plays but perhaps that is fitting. This might be a dramatic summer in the West Country. “Not good, my liege,” the line might be completed. “The varlet Westley doth our cause confound.” It is only July, for heaven’s sake, but the anxiety-meter is already high among Somerset supporters. By far the most carefree citizens on the County Ground this lunchtime were the thousand or so children who trooped happily round the perimeter as part of the county’s schools day. Those who had turned up to watch a full day’s cricket already had the worry beads out. Many Somerset supporters were fretting their side had taken only one Nottinghamshire wicket in the morning session. That fell when Ben Slater, having helped Jake Libby put on 35 for the first wicket – a stout effort for Nottinghamshire openers this season – attempted an inelegant thrash at a short ball from Jamie Overton but only skied a catch to Tom Abell at cover. So Nottinghamshire were 91 for 1 when supporters in the Colin Atkinson Pavilion tucked into their enormous carvery lunches. But that score worried visiting fans, too; they knew it was too good to last. And they were dead right mi’ duck. For even after they had got to 189 for 2 at tea, Nottinghamshire’s batsmen were still vulnerable; and those weaknesses were exploited to the unalloyed delight of home supporters in one of the most rapid confloptions seen at Taunton in recent seasons. After looking as though they might bat only once in this game, Steven Mullaney’s side lost seven wickets for 40 runs in 21.1 overs, all seven falling to the spinners, Dom Bess and Jack Leach, who finished the innings with 5 for 59 and 3 for 79 respectively. By the close Somerset’s unexpected 85-run lead had been extended to 92 for the loss of Tim Groenewald, who had opened to protect Azhar Ali. Somerset folk who gathered in the Stragglers’ Coffee House to hear Vic Marks talk about the county’s glory days could bask in their fresh memory of one of their own. They had just seen the sort of session which helps win titles. No one, except those who have watched their cricket at Trent Bridge this summer, had seen the visitors’ disintegration coming. Near the midpoint of the day Libby and Chris Nash were batting serenely against spinners who were struggling to find the right pace or length to bowl on this pitch. Their partnership neared a hundred. Even the diehards on Gimblett’s Hill were subdued and they can normally be relied upon for raucous encouragement or frank suggestions. This seemed a quiet day at home for Somerset; summer at half mast, some thought. The only entertainment Bess had provided came when he performed a handstand on the outfield. “We’re going though ’em like a butter through knife,” said one supporter. But having failed to make a breakthrough in a conventional fashion Somerset removed Nash from the game by whacking him on the head with the ball. Predictably, Overton literally did the damage, bowling a delicious bouncer which the batsman neither ducked under nor swayed away from. The blow did not immediately appear serious but the Notts physio quickly led the player from the field. Nash received a consoling pat from Overton and Ben Duckett replaced him. Somerset hoped it would destabilise their opponents at a time when normal methods had never threatened to. Eventually it did.Yet such fond aspirations seemed optimistic in the extreme when Duckett took 14 runs off four balls from Leach with three varieties of sweep – conventional, slog and reverse – and then whacked Bess into the Somerset Stand next over. As so often, though, Duckett wasted a promising start by attempting to cut a ball from Bess that was far too close to him. He had flirted with the same danger a couple of overs earlier and now he had gone for 38.That dismissal seemed to refresh Somerset’s bowlers. Both Bess and Leach gave the batsmen more problems in the six overs before tea than they had in the twenty previous and there was slight cause for home supporters to hope that the evening’s cricket would rescue their day.And suddenly Nottinghamshire collapsed like a hyper-sensitive drama queen. First to go was Libby, caught at slip by Lewis Gregory off Leach for a fine 77. Then Mullaney pulled a long hop to midwicket and Tom Moores was taken at short leg by Tom Banton off Leach. The same combination accounted for Liam Patterson-White, who having spent his first day as a first team cricketer laid low with tonsillitis spent his second getting a four-ball duck. Welcome to the county circuit, Liam. It really does get better.Bess took the last three wickets, the first of them being R Ashwin, who was bowled when attempting to reverse sweep a full toss. News filtered down that Samit Patel would play as a concussion replacement for Nash, although it is not yet known if he will be allowed to bowl his left-arm spin. That was really the only encouragement visiting supporters could take from this glorious evening in the West Country. Their cricketers must try to wrench a victory from somewhere and perhaps they will do so in the next 48 hours. But Somerset are in the seven-and-six seats in this game and another victory is beckoning, Their supporters will be worried about that.

Poch’s former Spurs star has been more creative than Maddison in 23/24

Having failed with the high-profile appointments of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy changed track and handed Ange Postecoglou the reins last summer.

Conte had been dismissed several months prior – the club's fourth sacking in as many years – and an eighth-placed Premier League finish had brought the urgency for change to the foreground.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

There have been some bumps in the road and Angeball is hardly infallible, but the progress under the Australian boss is clear to see, with new signings marrying into the ideology and existing squad members revived after the previous malaise.

Creativity has permeated the crop, and while Harry Kane was in prolific form last year, this was an issue that needed sorting, indeed rectified early into Postecoglou's reign through the £40m acquisition of James Maddison from relegated Leicester City.

The rest of the squad has stepped up too, with right-back Pedro Porro coming on leaps and bounds after entering at the 2022/23 term's midpoint, complete in his skill set and one of the Premier League's most creative full-backs.

Conte's Spurs flop is now worth just £4m & even worse than Gil

Tottenham have had their fair share of transfer blunders over the years.

ByAngus Sinclair Feb 19, 2024

However, he's actually been surpassed by a former Spurs star in Kieran Trippier, who has inarguably been one of Europe's most influential wide defenders over recent years.

Kieran Trippier's time at Spurs

Admittedly, Trippier has been chided for a catalogue of errors across recent months at Newcastle United, but he's been one of the most transformative signings in recent memory within English football, with the best days of his career coming after his spell with Spurs.

June 2015: Trippier was a somewhat unknown commodity but then Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino spotted an opportunity and activated the 24-year-old's bargain £3.5m release clause with Burnley and brought him to White Hart Lane.

The 5 foot 10 ace would amass 114 appearances for Tottenham, scoring twice and providing 23 assists, but he revealed that his final days at the side proved to be laced in poignancy, a growing sense that he was expendable forcing him to seek pastures new.

Speaking to The Athletic in 2019, he said: "What annoyed me … as you know, people in football speak and there are always rumours, but I know 100 per cent for a fact – and this is what I was most angry about – that two months before the end of the season, Daniel (Levy, the chairman) was offering me to other clubs.

“I knew for certain that was happening, so I knew my time there must be up. I was playing for my teammates and the supporters, but I also knew I wasn't wanted."

Levy was seemingly keen to move the defender on and that resulted in a permanent transfer to Atletico Madrid for a reported fee of £25m in the summer of 2019.

Perhaps, Trippier felt that the chairman should have gone about it in a different way or been, in his eyes, more respectful after more than 100 appearances for the club.

Kieran Trippier's post-Spurs career

Now aged 33, Trippier has been the linchpin behind Newcastle's resurgence under Eddie Howe's tutelage, producing some frightening performances since his arrival from Spain back in 2022, also assuming the central leadership role.

Described as a "revelation" by talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan, Trippier has been utterly immense, blending defensive fortitude with high-class creativity to a resounding effect, albeit suffering a blip in form recently, rebuked for some "disastrous" defensive displays across the winter period by journalist Harry De Cosemo.

Nonetheless, the lion's share of Trippier's efforts since draping the curtain on north London have been excellent, with his two-and-a-half-year stint with Atletico Madrid sharpening his defensive skills – playing under Diego Simeone will do that – before returning to his homeland in January 2022 as Newcastle started to kick things off under affluent new ownership.

To this day, he is one of the division's standout stars, chalked into the PFA Premier League Team of the Year for 2022/23.

More creative than James Maddison in 23/24

Tottenham have attacking quality in abundance right now despite the summer sale of Kane, but this hasn't always been the case over recent campaigns and Trippier could have been a fine player to have aided the club, especially given that he's actually been more creative than Maddison this term.

As per FBref, the Magpie machine ranks among the top 2% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues and European competitions over the past year for assists and shot-creating actions, the top 4% for passes attempted, and the top 3% for progressive passes per 90, clearly one of the game's elite creators.

As can be ascertained from the table above, Trippier is matching Maddison for key passes per game while creating more big changes and providing more assists, albeit a more infrequent goalscorer – but he is technically a defender, remember.

Furthermore, he might have played more fixtures but Trippier is supplying assists for his teammates at a rate of 0.43 per match, a higher rate than his fellow England international's 0.40 per match.

It is obviously important to remember that the stars in question play very different roles, but this actually just puts the force on Trippier's praiseworthy productivity.

But Postecoglou's Tottenham fraternity is steeped in fluency and attacking intent, and Trippier, while approaching the twilight phase of his career, has proved himself not only as one of Europe's best right-backs since leaving Spurs but one of the most influential playmakers around.

Newcastle captain Kieran Trippier.

Porro is much younger and will (hopefully) be a key member of Postecoglou's project for years to come, while Maddison has been hailed as "one of the best players of the season" by The Times' Henry Winter, Trippier has indeed pipped him when taking in the scope of the creative metrics.

Still, Trippier would have been an invaluable member over recent seasons, with his impact on Tyneside evidence that he could have been pivotal in stemming the sludge that has marred the recent years at the club, given his outstanding creativity in comparison to his compatriot this term.

Sam Curran gets into Ashes swing as Australia find going tougher

Tourists lose last six wickets for 17 before Dom Sibley’s 74 underpins Lions reply

Two sights signalled this as day one of the Ashes campaign for England, though still in the afterglow of a scarcely believable triumph in Sunday’s World Cup final over New Zealand at Lord’s.The first was that of the England selectors Ed Smith and James Taylor making their presence known by striding around the St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury, demonstrating their intent to finalise a Test squad, to face Ireland and then Australia, by Wednesday. The second came in the middle, where the left-armer Sam Curran obliterated the touring XI’s middle and lower order with the second new ball on his way to figures of 6 for 95.Where on day one the Australians had dominated through Travis Head and Matthew Wade as both sides kept one eye on events in London, now the spectre of a swerving Dukes ball in skilful hands was raised by Curran, a highly impressive performer in his first home summer as a Test player last year and likely to figure again this time around.Alongside Head, who remained impassable throughout, Mitchell Marsh, Tim Paine and company would have hoped to bat well into the afternoon. However Curran was able to swerve his way through five Australians in the space of four overs, engineering the loss of the last six touring wickets for 17.Marsh was first to go in circumstances that looked contentious – certainly the batsman thought so. Given out caught behind, Marsh made to remonstrate with the umpire, stood his ground for several moments and then trudged his way off with slow reluctance familiar to those who once watched Inzamam-ul-Haq for Pakistan.Such a display of disagreement was not to be repeated by the rest, who fell with blinding speed. Paine was pinned in front of the stumps for a duck, Michael Neser edged behind, and then Chris Tremain was bowled first ball to have Curran on a hat-trick. Jackson Bird found three runs to avert that at least, but his exit was swiftly followed by Jon Holland shouldering arms to hand Lewis Gregory a third wicket. The England Lions innings was thus underway far sooner than expected, and even as wickets fell regularly the Australians were unable to create quite the same level of mayhem throughout the rest of the afternoon. Plucky resistance was provided by Dom Sibley, spending precisely four hours over his 74, and James Bracey also hung around for a stand worth 89.Curran was then in to bat for the final hour or so, playing attractively in the company of Sam Hain, who lofted Head for six down the ground before being well taken by Paine off Holland’s slow left-arm in the day’s final over – a reward for two tidy, thoughtful spells. That gave Australia’s selection chairman Trevor Hohns, in attendance alongside Messrs Smith and Taylor, a little more to ponder ahead of Ashes squad selections.

Estava desenhada a virada.

'Exceptional work ethic' sets new Bengal captain Abhimanyu Easwaran apart

Manoj Tiwary, the captain till last season, wants his successor to “not get too caught up in the job” and continue to enjoy the game

Shashank Kishore30-Aug-2019

Abhimanyu Easwaran will lead Bengal across formats in the 2019-20 season•PTI

Abhimanyu Easwaran’s career graph continues to rise. Already a regular opener with India A who is knocking on the doors of the national team, the 23-year-old Bengal player has now been handed the captaincy of the state team for the 2019-20 season across formats. It’s a move that has made both Arun Lal, the team mentor, and Manoj Tiwary, the man he replaced, happy and excited.”He hasn’t got runs on the West Indies tour [by India A] and in the Duleep Trophy, but he is a terrific batsman, very, very talented, and he has exceptional work ethic,” Lal told ESPNcricinfo. “He is young, and the best part about him is his work ethic, which is brilliant. He is very fit, and is always working hard to become fitter and a better cricketer.”I like him very much; he has been living alone in Calcutta, away from his family, for a while now, but it hasn’t affected his game at all. It’s quite remarkable. I also like that he is very respectful towards his seniors and towards his team-mates. I think it’s a good call.”ALSO READ: Abhimanyu Easwaran’s pragmatism strengthens cricketing passionLike Lal, Tiwary too has big hopes from Abhimanyu, who has risen to become one of their batting mainstays. Except for his debut season in 2013-14, when he averaged a measly 17.62, Abhimanyu has consistently been among the runs, often averaging in the high 40s, with 12 centuries and 17 half-centuries.”I will be very disappointed if he doesn’t play for India,” Tiwary said. “He’s worked hard to get here. I said it two years ago that he’s India material. He’s nearly there now, and hopefully he will wear that cap soon.”I only hope he is persisted with and is given a decent run, and shouldn’t be judged on the basis of a few low scores. He has a good technique and has the ability to leave balls. Once set, his scoring improves and he’s a different player.”The captaincy decision was made formal on Friday at a Cricket Association of Bengal meeting, where the selectors initially proposed a split-captaincy model with Abhimanyu as four-day captain and Tiwary as the limited-overs leader. Tiwary, however, felt the new captain “needed to given space” to make a difference.”The selectors proposed a split-captaincy model, but I insisted if they are thinking of a leadership change, it should be uniform,” Tiwary said. “That way the new captain gets a free hand to implement certain plans he may have in mind. Having different captains could only create some confusion, so I told them if this is what they’re thinking, they should hand over the captaincy across formats.”On the change, Lal suggested that “a captain should in any case be changed every three-four years”, partly for the team to move forward and partly because “the captain has contributed all he can contribute”.As for Tiwary, he wanted his successor to not let captaincy become a bugbear.”Abhimanyu is level-headed, approaches situations in a calm manner. As a senior player, my only advice to him will be to soak it all in and not get too caught up in the job, because you’re not just thinking for yourself but also the team,” Tiwary said. “He’s at a stage in his career where he’s also broken into the India A ranks and is in national contention. Sometimes, when you’re there, you tend to lose the enjoyment factor and take everything a tad too seriously.”I’m always around as a senior player to help him out. He will be his own man, but should he need any support, as a senior, I will be around to help him.”Tiwary looked back at his stint with pride, despite Bengal failing to win any silverware under him. While their search for a Ranji Trophy since 1989-90 continues, the side made the semi-finals two seasons ago, and have consistently been in the reckoning for the knockouts. Tiwary hoped the “fruits of labour” would bear fruit soon.”I will look back at my time as captain fondly. Yes, we couldn’t win the big Ranji Trophy, but we had a lot of improvements. A number of players we backed three or four years ago are coming through,” he said. “While the trophy may not be there, I’m happy to have handled the transition phase well. I can be at peace with myself, because I did the job with utmost sincerity and commitment.”

West Ham star set to miss Brentford in more bad news for David Moyes

West Ham manager David Moyes is set to be without a star of his for their upcoming encounter with Brentford, according to one club insider.

West Ham winless as Moyes faces crunch next few games

These next few weeks could be pivotal in determining whether Moyes is still West Ham's manager next season.

Winless since the turn of the year and with growing speculation surrounding his position, Moyes faces an all-important imminent fixture schedule as his fate hangs in the balance.

West Ham are said to be exploring managerial alternatives to the Scotsman, in case they opt against extending his contract, with club insider ExWHUemployee recently claiming he'll be given until their Europa League last 16 tie "at least" to turn things around.

“I have spoken to people within the club and it’s clear they are massively concerned,” stated Ex.

“There are question marks surrounding the manager, with the shared view that the team are at present performing like a relegation side. The current stance is that there isn’t another manager right now ready and available to step in, so they are hoping at this stage that Moyes will be able to turn things around – I think he’ll be given the Europa League last-16 tie at least, as it currently stands.

“It appears they will stick with Moyes for the short term, in the hope performances and results will improve. Although plans are in being put into place should they decide to dismiss the manager, with alternatives now being looked at.”

The Hammers next take on Brentford as Moyes looks to turn the tide and put some dismal recent defeats behind him. West Ham lost to Nottingham Forest 2-0 in their last encounter, and before that they were on the receiving end of a 6-0 drubbing against Arsenal.

They certainly aren't helped by the absence of star midfielder Lucas Paqueta, with insider Claret & Hugh sharing an update on his fitness.

Paqueta set to miss Brentford in blow for West Ham

According to the outlet, Paqueta looks set to miss Brentford as West Ham and Moyes won't risk him, which will come as a blow given the Brazilian's undoubted quality.

“It would be wrong to play him against Brentford," said a C&H source "closely associated with the player".

"Too much of a risk and I would believe the Burnley or Villa matches are possibly preferable but not necessarily from the start."

Lucas Paqueta for West Ham.

Paqueta has starred for West Ham this season, with GOAL previously calling him one of Europe's most "underrated" midfielders. Former captain Declan Rice has also branded Paqueta's quality as "mind-boggling".

“He’s incredible, honestly, he’s absolutely incredible,” Rice said (via The Standard).

"I think now you’re seeing the real Lucas. Some of the stuff he does, even in training, it’s just mind-boggling how good he is.”
