Centuries from Azhar Ali and Babar Azam headlined a positive second day for Pakistan, rescuing the visitors from what threatened to be an embarrassing first-innings capitulation against a Cricket South Africa Invitation XI in Benoni.Three wickets from seamer Thandolwethu Mnyaka had overseen a disappointing top-order collapse early, with Pakistan reduced to 112 for 5 at one point, 206 runs behind the hosts’ 318. It left Pakistan requiring the services of their in-form batsman Azhar Ali and Babar Azam, the one who looks set to take his place for several years to come.Pakistan featured three players vying for the opening slot ahead of the first Test at SuperSport Park, beginning on December 26. Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman departed for 23 and 19 respectively, while Shan Masood, batting at number three, managed 41 before being castled by 25-year old Mnyaka.Haris Sohail and Asad Shafiq were made short work of, bringing Azhar and Babar together at the crease. The pair combined for a 155-run partnership, with Azhar retiring out after completing his hundred. When captain Sarfraz Ahmed was dismissed, Babar had reached three figures, and with Pakistan just 12 shy of the CSA’s Invitation XI first innings score, they decided to declare. That gave the CSA XI 12 overs at the end of the day to see out, which they managed for the loss of one wicket. Joshua Richards was bowled by Mohammad Amir in the third over of the innings, but Neil Brand and Tshepang Dithole saw out the rest of the day without further setbacks, putting 45 on the board. The game may be headed for a draw, but Pakistan have been left with much to take away. The form of their two best batsmen will reassure them, but out-of-form openers against an attack the calibre of South Africa’s is an uninviting prospect.

Advanced talks: Man Utd in move to sign “dominant” centre-back for Ten Hag

Manchester United are reportedly in ‘very advanced’ talks to sign a new centre-back for Erik ten Hag.

Man Utd's centre-backs options dwindling

The Red Devils have been leaking goals this season in both the Premier League and Champions League. In total, United have let in 16 goals in the top-flight and a whopping 14 in just five Group A games, three of which came against Galatasaray on Wednesday.

Ten Hag has Lisandro Martinez out injured until the end of the year, whereas Raphael Varane has started just two of the last 10 games in all competitions, seemingly galling out of favour under the Dutchman. As a result, Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof have become regulars in recent months, and by the looks of things, the Red Devils want to sign a new centre-back in the January transfer window, which is fast approaching.

Sport Witness relayed a transfer update involving Genoa defender Radu Dragusin, claiming Man Utd have joined the race to sign the centre-back, who is seen as ideal for the Red Devils’ back four. The title claims that United are in ‘very advanced talks’ to sign the 21-year-old and have ‘launched the operation’ to bring him to Old Trafford. Those in Manchester are willing to make a ‘significant financial effort’ to sign Dragusin in the New Year, although Arsenal, AC Milan, Barcelona, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are also watching the player.

Genoa defender Radu Dragusin.

Radu Dragusin profiled

Dragusin is primarily a centre-back but can also play as a right-back or as a left-back, so could provide Ten Hag with plenty of versatility. Valued at a career-high €10m by Transfermarkt, the player is a Romania international and is sponsored by Nike. (Radu Dragusin profile – Transfermarkt)

Formerly on the books of Juventus, where he featured on four occasions for the senior side, Dragusin has made 55 appearances in total for Genoa, scoring five times and providing one assist. (Radu Dragusin stats – Transfermarkt)

The player’s agent, Florin Manea, has recently said that he regularly speaks to Arsenal, Newcastle and Tottenham about Dragusin.

“The people from Genoa know (that he will soon leave). I have been in London for some time and have almost weekly meetings with important teams. We are getting closer. I spoke with Newcastle, with Arsenal, with Tottenham. I also have the messages with them, conversations. There are teams that ask.

“I want to say that, 100 per cent by next summer, Radu will play for a very strong club. One in the top 10 in the world. He wants to be in the Premier League, but I know that Milan like him a lot. I talked to the people there.”

Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig has also hailed him a "dominant" defender, so if United are to pursue the player as the report claims, they may have to look to wrap up an agreement relatively soon, especially with the number of other sides keen.

Labuschagne, Head hit 80s as Australia stamp their authority

Pat Cummins strikes with the final ball of the day to leave Sri Lanka with a lot of work to do to save the game

The Report by Daniel Brettig25-Jan-2019

If it did not quite turn out to be the breakthrough batting day Australia had been yearning for all summer, the hosts were still able to savour their highest partnership and individual scores of the summer courtesy Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne, to leave supremacy in the first Test against Sri Lanka firmly in the hands of Tim Paine’s team.Neither Head nor Labuschagne had looked immediately comfortable in the wake of a pair of early wickets, but ground their way through the difficult period to score more rapidly and ultimately put on 166 for the fifth wicket. Both were dismissed within sight of centuries, and by innings’ end Australia’s batsmen had completed 113 individual innings since Usman Khawaja notched their last Test hundred, in Dubai as far back as October. The ball swung deviously for Suranga Lakmal in the final session, helping Sri Lanka’s senior paceman to swerve past Head and then draw an edge from captain Paine first ball. Debutant Kurtis Patterson showed off his languid, fluid style in making 30, and Mitchell Starc struck a handful of uncomplicated blows before Australia were dismissed with six overs remaining for the night, a tantalising period for the pacemen that Pat Cummins took advantage of by finding Dimuth Karunaratne’s outside edge with the very last ball.Nevertheless, Head and Labuschagne put Australia in a position to dictate terms in the match, having bowled the Sri Lankans out for a meagre 144 on day one after Dinesh Chandimal had won the toss and chosen to bat first. Following a year of tribulation for Australian cricket, the home side are looking for progress in their final Test series before preparing to defend the Ashes in England later in 2019.ALSO READ: Drafting Patterson in showed ‘common sense’, says CA chiefLabuschagne, having appeared in full control, was crestfallen to have spooned a simple chance to short midwicket from the bowling of Dhananjaya de Silva shortly before the new ball was due. Head was similarly frustrated to be lbw when he could not get his planted front foot out of the way of Lakmal’s inswing. After surviving 25 overs on the first innings to get as far as 40, Marcus Harris appeared to have set himself up for the long innings his talent has so far suggested is well within his capabilities at Test level. However, uncertainty in handling shortish balls wide of the off stump was to catch-up with Harris, when in the very first over of the day he followed up an attractive cover drive by hesitating on a cut shot at Lahiru Kumara to send a simple catch to point. At the other end, nightwatchman Nathan Lyon was worked over by Lakmal, ultimately succumbing to a length ball moving subtly away to catch the edge and fly low to Kusal Mendis in the slips. Lyon did not hesitate to walk upon seeing the catch, but the third umpire was required to adjudicate to confirm that it had carried.Suranga Lakmal picked up five wickets•Cricket Australia/Getty Images

Head walked to the middle with a history of looking uncomfortable against the short ball during the India series, and Lakmal’s first delivery to him was appropriately directed. Head ducked out of the way very late, before the ball continued to climb for four byes. Labuschagne looked similarly ill at ease during his early minutes at the crease, as the visitors tightened the scoreboard in search of a way through to Patterson. However, the pressure imposed was gradually shaken off by Head and Labuschagne, as they crept up towards the Sri Lankan total. Head found gaps through gully and cover, while Labuschagne worked the ball around effectively even though he was occasionally made to look uncomfortable by Dilruwan Perera. A Labuschagne sweep to the boundary raised the 50 partnership – the first of the Test – before Head clipped Lakmal fluently through midwicket to take the Australians into a first-innings lead.To wrestle their way back into the contest, Sri Lanka needed a wicket soon after play resumed, and in the first over of the post-tea session, they should have had it. Lakmal squared up Head with his third ball, coaxing an edge from around the wicket that flew at an eminently catchable height. But Niroshan Dickwella’s weight transfer right at the point of delivery, following the ball’s angle in rather than the edge away, took his balance in the wrong direction, and his late, correcting dive saw the chance go to ground. This reprieve allowed Head and Labuschagne to re-set, which they did with a growing measure of control and confidence though still scoring at a relatively sedate pace. Head was able to drive, cut and pull boundaries, while Labuschagne cut firmly forward of point to raise his first half-century in Tests.Chandimal rotated his bowlers regularly but as the pitch became more docile for seam and spin and very little reverse swing was available, it became simply a case of Head and Labuschagne maintaining their concentration. Given how often the Australians had struggled in this respect during the India Test series, it was a welcome sight for the national team coach Justin Langer to witness how efficiently they did so.With Sri Lanka burning their final review to a highly optimistic lbw shout, a century appeared to beckon for Labuschagne, only for him to lose concentration. Head was able to keep his composure, however, until Lakmal’s movement found a way through. When Paine was well held by Mendis the very next ball, a rapid change of innings was in the offing, but Patterson offered plenty of promise while 51 runs were added for the final three wickets.Sri Lanka were left with the job ahead of them, and it was to be made still more vexing when Karunaratne nibbled at Cummins’ final ball, well pitched from around the wicket, to deliver an edge to an exultant Paine behind the stumps.

Dyche can ease £55k-p/w blow by unleashing Everton’s £16m gem

Everton could secure their third straight Premier League victory by defeating Chelsea at Goodison Park this afternoon, and it would represent the perfect week for Sean Dyche.

The 3-0 win over Newcastle United in midweek proved that the Toffees don’t want to be anywhere near a relegation battle, and it was a wonderful performance.

The Blues are certainly there for the taking too, as they have won just once in their previous five league matches and Dyche will be hoping for a repeat performance from the win over the Magpies.

Everton team news

Speaking to the press before the Chelsea tie, Dyche gave an update on several players – most notably Seamus Coleman.

The experienced stalwart was substituted in midweek after suffering a foot injury in what was his first start in seven months.

Dyche said: “We’ll check on Seamus tomorrow. He has a minor situation, we think, which is unfortunate but that can happen. He has been out a long time. It's great to have him back, he wore the armband with pride like he does.”

The £55k-per-week defender was making his 353rd appearance in the Premier League for the Toffees – a club record.

Dyche may choose not to risk him against the Stamford Bridge side this afternoon, therefore, opening the door for Nathan Patterson to be unleashed in the starting XI.

Nathan Patterson’s season in numbers

The Scot joined Everton in January 2022 from Glasgow Rangers for £16m and while it took him a while to hit the ground running, this season has seen some consistent progress.

Patterson made 19 league appearances during the whole of the 2022/23 season, but he looks set to eclipse that this term as he is currently sitting on 13 appearances, having missed just two matches.

nathan-patterson-everton-sean-dyche-premier-league-james-garner-england

The former Ibrox gem has taken advantage of Coleman’s injury woes and established himself as the main choice at right back and the 22-year-old has even chipped in with a couple of assists this term, showcasing his attacking abilities.

Hailed as a “diamond” by former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy in 2022, the more Patterson plays, the better he will become and Dyche is clearly realising this.

Everton could unleash Young in new role by starting £73k-p/w "warrior"

Everton could have a new role for Young by starting £73k-per-week “warrior” over Jack Harrison.

ByAdam Scully Dec 7, 2023

The defender currently ranks second in the squad for assists (two) in the top flight this season, while also ranking seventh for accurate long balls per game (1.3) and in the top ten for tackles (1.5) and interceptions (0.5) per game, indicating that he has been a solid performer for the club.

It remains to be seen how long the Irish defender will be out for, yet with games coming thick and fast over the festive period, Dyche won't be risking any player who isn’t quite 100%, especially Coleman.

This will give Patterson the chance to continue improving and demonstrating his worth to the former Burnley manager.

A tie against Chelsea today will be an ideal opportunity for the Scottish right-back to further showcase his skills on the right side of the defence and if he plays like he has done so far this term, Dyche will have nothing to worry about.

Leeds lightweight who lost nine duels let Farke down badly alongside Meslier

Leeds United failed to put pressure on Ipswich Town ahead of their game with Leicester City as they were beaten 2-1 by Preston North End on Boxing Day in the Championship.

The Whites lost to a fine header from Alan Browne, shortly after goalkeeper Illan Meslier was handed a straight red card for violent conduct, and a stunning finish from Liam Miller either side of a Pascal Struijk equaliser from the spot.

It was a day to forget for Daniel Farke's side and his shot-stopper's bad temper did little to help the team to pick anything up from Deepdale.

However, he was not the only player who struggled in Lancashire as teenage right-back Archie Gray endured a rough afternoon and let the head coach down with a poor display.

Why Illan Meslier was sent off against Preston

The Whites shot-stopper inexcusably decided to push the face of Milutin Osmajic with his glove and was instantly, and rightfully, handed a red card by the referee, as the Preston forward rolled around on the floor next to him.

Whilst the Deepdale attacker made the most of the incident, there is no hiding away from the fact that a player cannot shove an opponent in the face in that manner and expect to remain on the pitch.

Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

What made it worse was that Meslier instigated the initial bust-up as he caught a wayward cross with ease and then decided to bump into, and seemingly say something to, Ben Whiteman when there was no need to.

Osmajic then arrived on the scene to bump into the goalkeeper and that caused the French giant to raise his hand towards the centre-forward.

Archie Gray's performance against Preston in numbers

The 17-year-old defender showed his inexperience as Millar was able to get the better of him far too often and it could be argued that the manager should have withdrawn him way before the winger scored the winning goal.

It was a learning experience for Gray as the talented former Liverpool prospect used his quick feet and silky skills to constantly get past him.

Millar completed three of his five attempted dribbles and won nine of his 13 ground duels in total as he came out on top of the England U19 international in the physical battle.

Archie Gray for Leeds United.

The winger cut inside away from Gray, and past Daniel James, to whip in a stunning cross for Browne for the first goal and then whizzed past the full-back with ease before unleashing a terrific strike into the top corner for the winner.

Gray was a lightweight at Leeds for the back as he lost eight of his ten ground battles and one of his two aerial duels throughout the 90 minutes – nine of 12 in total.

The academy graduate, who completed 76% of his attempted passes, only completed two tackles and failed to make a single clearance, interception, or block, whilst he was also dribbled past twice.

These statistics show that the young full-back struggled throughout the match as Millar ran rings around him to win the match for Preston.

Gray and Meslier, for very different reasons, both let Farke down badly against Preston and the German tactician will be hoping for far better from the English talent next time out.
