The Scorchers coach also lashed out at Cricket Australia for releasing D’Arcy Short, Travis Head and Alex Carey from the national team squad to play in Sunday’s BBL final

Perth Scorchers coach Justin Langer has attacked critics of the Big Bash League club’s list management, saying his efforts to keep a strong West Australian group together over time were justified by the development of the players. Langer also lashed out at Cricket Australia for releasing D’Arcy Short, Travis Head and Alex Carey from the national team squad to play in Sunday’s BBL final.Responding to accusations of contract “bundling”, whereby players receive generous state contracts to counterbalance lesser payments within the BBL salary cap, Langer said the performances of players such as Andrew Tye should mean Western Australia and the Scorchers should not be questioned as to whether they were flouting CA’s regulations, which outlaw states from offering any “inducement” for players to choose a particular BBL club.”Give me one example and then we can talk about every single one of these practices of bundling contracts,” Langer told when questioned about the Scorchers’ contracting. “It’s tougher, to be fair, for the states with two teams, but they also have huge populations. So they’ve got the opportunity to do what we do.”Let’s use AJ Tye [for example]. The same AJ Tye we took off the scrapheap of club cricket about six years ago, the same guy who went to Sydney Thunder, didn’t like it and wanted to come home, who loves Perth and Western Australia, who just got $1.5m in the IPL auction, who just took five wickets because he’s improved in our programme. If we’re doing the wrong thing by that, I’ll cut my leg off. It’s unbelievable.”We had 21 guys play for us in 10 games this year which is extraordinary, and five or six of them are young Western Australia kids. We didn’t have Nathan Coulter-Nile, Jason Behrendorff or the Marsh brothers play the whole series for us. We do proudly want our guys to stay but along the way we lose D’Arcy Short and Marcus Harris, and Bradley Hogg and Craig Simmons and Mike Hussey because we can’t afford to keep them. That’s the truth. We’re really fair on our players. All this dialogue I’ve been hearing this series, I guarantee now we’ve lost the semi-final, no-one will talk about it again.”ESPNcricinfo has confirmed that the Scorchers are not under investigation by CA for their contracting practices, despite queries being raised with the governing body by at least two other BBL clubs and public questions being asked by the likes of Brad Hodge and Dirk Nannes. At the same time, Langer denied he had pressured members of the WA state squad to stay with the Scorchers, saying “they’re all big boys” with managers to negotiate on their behalf.Langer said that any players who chose to stay in WA rather than taking bigger contracts with other BBL teams in the eastern states did so because they loved playing for the Scorchers and staying in their home state. He also said that the club had benefited from hard work done over the past five years – since Langer became state and BBL coach in 2012-13 – to foster a culture that players wanted to be a part of, irrespective of how much they were paid.Getty Images
“So D’Arcy Short’s left, Marcus Harris has left. Mike Hussey and Brad Hogg, who are two of my best mates, they left. Craig Simmons left. What, so I’m coercing players? Give me a break,” Langer said. “If they don’t want to stay – every professional has a manager these days, they’re all big boys – if they don’t want to stay, they can go. If they want to stay because they love being here and they love the WACA family, and we win a lot, so why wouldn’t they want to stay here?”The problem is you’ve got to work really hard to do that [create a winning culture]. But it’s easy to point fingers and say ‘they must be cheating’ or ‘JL must be coercing players’. Are you joking? All winter when our coaches are in the cold WACA indoor centre, keeping an eye on our Under-17 and Under-19s kids, no-one’s telling us then we’re coercing them to stay.”Or we’re keeping an eye on our whole programme, we’re watching club cricket all day – that’s the hard part of it, to develop this culture. But let’s not worry about doing all of that, that’s too hard, let’s just point our fingers and say they’re doing the wrong thing. Give me a break.”On the subject of CA’s decision to release Short, Carey and Head for the tournament final, Langer said he was disappointed by the inconsistency after his team was unable to pick Tye or Ashton Agar for the semi-final. He also claimed that the decision contravened MoU discussions during last year’s fractious pay dispute where players were ruled out of playing T20 matches on consecutive days. Carey and Short will both play in Adelaide on Sunday after playing for Australia in Sydney on Saturday night.”What I don’t like is the inconsistency, I find it phenomenal really,” Langer said. “We were told at the start of the Big Bash that none of the players who were in the Australian team would play the Big Bash and now all of a sudden they are. There’s no doubt the scheduling’s an issue and we’d like to see our best players, but we also know at the start of the season that Australian international cricket takes priority.”I’m not pumped about the inconsistency of it, I sort of get it, but there were all of the arguments that went on about the MoU and we didn’t enjoy some of that dialogue that they don’t play the next day and all that sort of stuff. I’d just like to see things consistent, that’s all. We would’ve loved to have Ashton Agar and AJ Tye playing for us the other night and now al of a sudden that changes. Even if D’Arcy Short played, I’m happy with that because I never worry too much about the opposition, I worry about us”That’s where it’s difficult for me, one of the hardest things about the Big Bash competition is trying to forecast and contract who you might have and who you might not have because of international commitments, and we all do that. That’s where list management is so crucial, and so to change what we understand, that’s pretty disappointing.”

Glasgow Rangers had a mass summer clear out under Michael Beale which resulted in 11 players departing the club, including Allan McGregor, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos.
One player who also looked like they would be leaving Ibrox following the expiration of their contract was club stalwart Steven Davis.
The Northern Irish midfielder signed a one-year extension towards the end of the 2021/22 season, but he suffered a season ending knee injury before Christmas last year, and it looked as though his time at the club was coming to an end.
Despite his contract expiring, Beale is allowing him to stay and continue his rehabilitation at the club before a final decision is made, but its clear the 43-year-old will need to find a long term heir for the midfielder.
There are a few youngsters in the academy who could soon make the step-up and Bailey Rice is one of the standouts who has the potential to become an ideal heir to Davis.
How old is Bailey Rice?
The former Motherwell youngster is only 16 years old and he joined the Light Blues last summer, turning down the offer of a professional contract at the Steelmen to move to Glasgow, and it looks like it could turn into a stroke of genius.
Journalist Mark Hendry even lauded him as a “prospect” amid the interest from Rangers and Manchester City in January 2022, and he has already made waves during his spell in the academy.
Has Bailey Rice made an appearance for Rangers?
Rice made a total of 21 appearances for both the B team and U19 side last season, scoring twice and grabbing one assist in the process, while even gaining experience in the UEFA Youth League, playing against the likes of Napoli and Liverpool.
Steven Davis playing for Rangers
These performances led to him making his debut for the senior side in February against Livingston, coming on with a few minutes to go as the club were strolling to a 3-0 win and this taste of first team action will surely give him a major confidence boost.
What is Bailey Rice’s style of play?
The teen starlet tends to operate in a defensive midfield position but has also played slightly further forward and its evident that he offers a similar playing style to that of Davis.
The 38-year-old likes to dictate play from the heart of the midfield with his sublime passing ability and Rice has this quality in abundance.
Rangers Review journalist Jonny McFarlane praised him during a tie against Celtic earlier this year, saying: “20 minutes gone at Ibrox and Rangers dominating Celtic here. Bailey Rice controlling the game and looks a serious talent. Ishaka powerful and technically gifted causing problems and Lyall's goal was a terrific strike.”
Sharing similar traits will only help accelerate his growth into a potential first team player over the next couple of years as it looks as though he will outgrow the B team sooner rather than later.
There is no doubt that he is the natural successor to Davis and the next 12 months will be crucial in his development.
Karachi Kings crushed Multan Sultans, first with an authoritative batting performance, led by Joe Denly, and then snuffing out Multan’s pursuit on the back of Shahid Afridi’s three-wicket burst
The Report by Arun Venugopal10-Mar-2018
PCB/PSL
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsIn a nutshellLed by Joe Denly’s 55-ball 78, Karachi Kings crushed Multan Sultans with an authoritative batting performance, and condemned them to their second successive loss in as many days. Put in to bat, Karachi overcame a slow start to amass 188 – this season’s highest total – before Shahid Afridi snuffed out Multan’s pursuit with a three-wicket burst, including a maiden over.Despite beginning the chase positively, scoring 53 for 2 in the Powerplay, Multan lost five wickets in the next seven overs, including those of Ahmed Shehzad (24) and Kieron Pollard in successive overs, for merely 34 runs. With heavyweights such as Kumar Sangakkara (18) and captain Shoaib Malik also having departed, Multan had no hope of coming back into the game.Karachi’s innings, on the other hand, suffered no such jitters as they lost only three wickets in all. After a slow start to the Powerplay that yielded only 32 runs for the loss of Lendl Simmons, who laboured to 4 off 13 balls, Denly and Babar Azam first rebuilt and then ensured a surge. Together, they put on 118 in 13.2 overs, the highest this season, and the most any Karachi pair has made in the PSL.Initially, it was a gusty Denly that did most of the heavy-lifting even as Azam struggled to rotate the strike. Azam eventually caught up, and while he didn’t quite manage the lusty heaves that Denly profited from, he hung around till the 19th over and finished with a 39-ball 58, including six fours and a six. The climax saw Karachi’s total swell further thanks to some fearless striking from Colin Ingram. Karachi’s bowlers enjoyed the cushion of the big total and shared the spoils as Multan were bowled out in the final over.Where the match was wonDenly and Azam kept the scoring-rate increasing steadily – from 68 to 1 in 10 overs, they made 53 in the next five – but the decisive thrust was provided by Ingram, who blasted an unbeaten 29 off eight balls, with four sixes. Ingram’s late assault helped Karachi pile on 49 runs in the last three overs, with Hardus Viljoen going for 21 in the penultimate over. Three of his four sixes were dispatched to the long-on region with the seemingly simplest of methods – clear the front leg, free the arms and tee off. Ingram rubbed it in with a six off the last delivery to puncture whatever was left of the fielding side’s morale. The men who won itMuch like Ingram, Denly’s stroke-making, too, was remarkably uncomplicated. With both him and Azam struggling to find any scoring momentum – either through singles or boundaries – Denly began to manufacture opportunities by making room and jumping out of the crease. Denly connected with most of his swings, and when he didn’t cart it between deep midwicket and long on, he smacked it through the off side. Having made single-digit scores in his last two innings, Denly also ensured he went the distance this time. During the course of his 25th T20 half-century, which included 10 fours and two sixes, he also helped Azam get past a cautious start and accelerate the scoring.Where they standKarachi have dislodged Multan from second position by virtue of a better net run-rate. Karachi have also played two games fewer than Multan, who have nine points from nine matches and have slipped to third spot on a congested table.

Southampton splashed the cash on deadline day as they snapped up Ross Stewart from Sunderland for an initial fee of £8m, which could rise to £12m including add-ons.
Who are Southampton's most expensive striker signings?
The Saints have not been afraid to lavish out big fees in order to find a consistent number nine to bolster their attacking options over the years.
They will now be hoping that the former Black Cats star does not follow in the footsteps of a certain Guido Carrillo, who turned out to be a huge flop at St. Mary's after his move to the club under Mauricio Pellegrino.
Top five signings (excluding Carrillo)
Fee paid (via Transfermark)
Danny Ings
£21.6m
Paul Onuachu
£15.5m
Adam Armstrong
£15.2m
Manolo Gabbiadini
£14.6m
Che Adams
£14.4m
The club have had mixed success with their recruitment at the top end of the pitch over the years but the signing of Carrillo was a particularly poor piece of business, all things considered.
How much did Southampton pay for Guido Carrillo?
Southampton signed the centre-forward from French side AS Monaco for a club-record £19m fee in January of 2018 in an attempt to find a reliable scorer.
The striker had worked with Pellegrino, who was the manager at the time, at Argentine club Estudiantes and the club decided to back their head coach by securing a record deal for Carrillo, with vice-chairman Les Reed stating that he was confident that the player would benefit the Saints for "years" to come.
It was reported that the Argentine boss made a number nine signing a priority after £75m was raked in from Liverpool for central defender Virgil van Dijk, which provided him with the funds to splash out on a big addition.
However, it was a strange move for Southampton to make as Carrillo was 26 and had yet to prove himself to be a consistent or reliable goalscorer.
Former Monaco striker Guido Carrillo.
Football Transfers rated his Expected Transfer Value (xTV) at €13.1m (£11.2m) at the time of the move, which suggests that they paid far above the going rate to secure his services.
The £19m signing arrived off the back of just 15 goals and four assists in 65 Ligue 1 matches for Monaco. He had joined the French side after scoring 40 goals in 140 appearances for Estudiantes in his home country.
During the first half of the 2017/18 campaign, the 6 foot 2 forward scored only four goals and created zero 'big chances' for his teammates in 15 league outings for Monaco.
That came after the towering striker plundered seven goals and one assist in 19 Ligue 1 matches for his former club throughout the 2016/17 season.
These statistics show that Southampton signed a relatively experienced player who had yet to find his scoring boots on a regular basis at senior level.
They were gambling on him finally developing into a consistent scorer whilst being able to adapt to English and Premier League football. That turned out to be an expensive gamble that did not work out.
How many goals did Carrillo score for Southampton?
The Argentine ended up playing just ten matches in all competitions for the Saints and did not find the back of the net on a single occasion.
Pellegrino handed him seven Premier League appearances during the second half of the 2017/18 campaign, which included five starts, but he was unable to hit the ground running at St. Mary's with zero goals and zero 'big chances' created.
Carrillo only completed 66% of his attempted passes and lost 63% of his duels throughout those top-flight matches for the club, as per Sofascore, an indication that he struggled with the quality and physicality of the division.
Former Southampton striker Guido Carrillo.
The former Monaco marksman did not provide a goal threat, did not create for his teammates, was not a reliable passing option through the middle of the pitch, and was dominated by opposition players from a physical perspective.
Pellegrino was sacked in March 2018 and his replacement, Mark Hughes, opted to send Carrillo out on loan to LaLiga outfit Leganes for the 2018/19 campaign.
The Argentine finisher spent two seasons on loan with the Spanish outfit and contributed with ten goals and two assists in 60 appearances for the club.
How did Carrillo leave Southampton?
Southampton eventually decided to cut ties with the £19m flop as they released him on a free transfer in the summer of 2020, two-and-a-half-years after his club-record move to the club from Monaco.
Journalist Josh Bunting described it as a "disappointing" situation for the Saints as they received £0 back off their initial £19m investment on the striker.
It was a howler of a move by Reed and Pellegrino in 2018 as they gambled on a player who had shown few signs of being ready to take the Premier League by storm after his struggles in France.
Former Southampton striker Guido Carrillo.
The warning signs were there and it turned out that they should have been heeded as Carrillo went on to flop in England and left for nothing after failing to score a single goal for the club.
Where is Carrillo now?
He is currently back playing for Estudiantes in Argentina at the age of 32 and has scored five goals in 27 games since making the move earlier this year.
Football Transfers currently rates his xTV at just €1.5m (£1.3m), a whopping £17.7m less than the fee that Southampton paid to secure his signature at the start of 2018.
He has not proven his worth since departing the Saints on a free transfer which only goes to emphasise the disaster that played out regarding Carrillo during his time in England.
Reed seemingly trusted Pellegrino's opinion on the centre-forward, as he had already worked with the ex-Monaco man in Argentina, and was willing to spend a huge sum of money off the back of his thoughts, despite the statistics not backing it up.
It ended up being a costly howler and Russell Martin will be hoping that Stewart does not go down the same route over the years to come.
