Newcastle: £30m Transfer Spells Bad News for Gordon

Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Bayern Munich phenom Sadio Mane of late to underscore the meteoric rise of the club over the past season or so, now formidable Champions League contenders after previously languishing as relegation candidates.

This month, German newspaper BILD (via Caught Offside) have linked Mane with a move back to the Premier League after signing for the Bavaria giants for £35m last summer, leaving Liverpool after years of illustrious success under Jurgen Klopp.

Newcastle and Manchester United have been credited with an interest for the distinguished and Premier League-proven star, who could cost just £30m after a somewhat inauspicious spell in the German Bundesliga, and given the Toon have secured a top-four finish this year, the allure factor has returned to St. James' Park and Mane may well be enticed.

And recently, in cryptic fashion, the 31-year-old left a tantalising message to play on the Magpies' minds when questioned on his future while on international duty, saying "never say never" when asked about a possible move to Newcastle.

Should Newcastle sign Sadio Mane?

Considering the current state of play on Tyneside, there is every possibility that world-class stars such as Mane would be attracted to the possibility of moving to the club to take on a central role in Eddie Howe's project.

Candidly, Newcastle look destined for the very top after the lucrative takeover in 2021, and with the manner in which the outfit have worked across the park, diligent decisions and tactical brilliance from a footballing standpoint allude to a prosperous future at the forefront of the game.

Mane would bring instantaneous success and striking potency of a calibre that perhaps no other United ace could quite match; Callum Wilson is a prolific striker; Alexander Isak is dynamic, but Mane offers the whole gamut and has left a trail of devastation in his wake across the duration of his career.

The £363k-per-week gem scored 111 goals for Liverpool from 263 outings, also assisting 48 times, and captivated fans with his displays, leaving former boss Jurgen Klopp hailing him as "world-class" and as a "machine".

Typically found on the offensive left flank, the 95-cap AFCON champion's arrival at St. James' Park would surely spell danger for Anthony Gordon, who has not quite found his feet since completing a £45m transfer from Everton this January.

The 22-year-old scored against Chelsea on the final day of the Premier League season to finally break his duck after 16 appearances and has indeed offered glimpses of high-class promise for Howe's outfit, but given his positional preference aligns with Mane's, it could prove detrimental to his development.

European competition will at least provide greater opportunity for players to impress at Newcastle, but with such a superlative acquisition, Gordon will surely have to play with impeccable style to ensure that his manager keeps the faith.

If he doesn't, then a player of Mane's calibre would no doubt easily displace him.

Khawaja bats through day to put Australia on top

Usman Khawaja batted throughout the second day in Adelaide to give Australia a 48-run lead at the close of play

In his first innings as a Test opener, Usman Khawaja scored Australia’s first hundred of the series, and their first in day-night Test cricket. In his first innings as a Test batsman, Peter Handscomb scored an impressive half-century. In his first innings as a Test batsman, Nic Maddinson was bowled for a duck. Such was the progression for Australia on the second day in Adelaide, where South Africa used the second new ball to fight back late in the evening. Most of this day belonged to Khawaja, who batted throughout it and by stumps had occupied the crease for 285 deliveries. But the last session was arguably South Africa’s as they claimed three wickets and reached into Australia’s tail, although a frustrating seventh-wicket stand between Khawaja and Mitchell Starc prevented them running through it. At stumps Starc had 16 and Khawaja was on 138, ready to take his innings into its third day.Khawaja was hoping the tail would help him build a big enough lead to worry South Africa – already the advantage was 48. Australia scored 95 runs in the first session, 100 in the second and 98 in the third and if runs did not come exactly briskly – Kyle Abbott was especially frugal and picked up 3 for 38 from 25 overs – a batsman could rotate the strike and pick off the bad balls once settled, as Khawaja did brilliantly.Khawaja was so patient that his first 80 deliveries brought only 18 runs. Perhaps it was a blessing in disguise for Australia that David Warner was prevented from opening on the first evening because he had spent too long off the field having treatment on his shoulder. The tricky period before stumps on day one required watchfulness, and Khawaja carried that trait into the second day as Abbott especially asked questions of the top order. The debutant opener Matt Renshaw (10) and then Warner in the unfamiliar position of first drop both edged Abbott to third slip where Dean Elgar held both catches, the first so low to the ground it needed third-umpire confirmation and the second more at a more comfortable height. Australia were 2 for 37 and the innings could have gone either way. As it happened, Khawaja and Smith steadied perfectly by putting on 137 for the third wicket.Smith was dropped on 46 when he edged JP Duminy and Hashim Amla at slip juggled and dropped the chance, and the partnership only ended via a communication breakdown between Smith and Khawaja. On 59, Smith pushed Tabraiz Shamsi to point and called for a single. Khawaja set off before calling no and Smith seemingly did not hear and kept running. By the time he had stopped and tried to regain his own ground, it was too late. But if you’re going to sell the captain’s wicket cheaply you should at least put a high price on your own. Khawaja did that, and brought up his fifth Test century from his 197th delivery with a cut through point for four off Shamsi. He was prolific through the leg side, pulling well when the bowlers dropped short, and once he became used to Shamsi’s wrist-spin he used his feet and drove exquisitely through cover. He followed his century stand with Smith by compiling a 99-run partnership with Handscomb, and it continued Khawaja’s fine series – he has featured in seven of the 10 Australian stands of 50 or more in this series. But Handscomb was equally impressive during their time together at the crease. His first ball in Test cricket was a pearler from Vernon Philander that moved away just a fraction and beat the outside edge, but Handscomb survived and thrived. His method of batting deep inside his crease gave him time to cut effectively and he also used his feet to the spinners. He appeared unawed by the occasion and ensured the strike was rotated, in fact outscoring Khawaja by 14 runs during the stand. Handscomb struck six fours and three in succession off Philander brought up his fifty from his 70th delivery. In the end it was Abbott who breached Handscomb’s defences, seaming the new ball sharply in to bowl him for 54. As one debutant walked off another walked on, but where Handscomb had been calm and in control, Maddinson struggled to get his feet moving and finished with a 12-ball duck when Kagiso Rabada swung one in a searing yorker that rattled the stumps. In the next over, Philander had Matthew Wade caught behind and at 6 for 283, there was a risk Australia would collapse and their lead would be minimal. But by stumps, Starc had survived for 50 deliveries and frustrated South Africa’s hopes of a quick finish to the innings. And, as ever throughout the day, Khawaja was still there.

Bacher lauds de Villiers for 'wise' decision

AB de Villiers has made a “wise decision” in the “best interests of South African cricket,” by sitting out of Test cricket for most of the rest of 2017

‘I needed time away, I need more’ – de Villiers

AB de Villiers has made a “wise decision” in the “best interests of South African cricket,” by sitting out of Test cricket for most of the rest of 2017, according to Ali Bacher, the former South Africa captain and veteran administrator.Bacher met with de Villiers on Tuesday, shortly after de Villiers had ruled himself out of the New Zealand Tests in March, and told ESPNcricinfo he thought de Villiers had done the right thing.”AB is an extraordinary individual and the amount of cricket he has played has taken its toll on his body. If he had to play all formats, his body will break down,” Bacher said. “He has made a wise decision to go about things cautiously and get his body ready to take on the world again.”De Villiers has spent the last six months on the sidelines as he recovered from an elbow injury that required surgery. He is due to make a comeback in a T20 against Sri Lanka on January 25, with a view to playing in the five-match ODI series that follows, and hopes to lead South Africa to the Champions Trophy and ultimately the 2019 World Cup.Fifty-over cricket is his focus and Bacher believes de Villiers will not rest until he has his hands on an ICC trophy. “He is extremely passionate about South African cricket and about winning that World Cup,” Bacher said.Bacher also brushed aside concerns that de Villiers’ extended time out of the Test arena will see the team move on without him.”He is one of the greats and I would think that, when he is fit and ready, he will be an automatic pick.” He asked the South African public to be patient with de Villiers because “he has given 100%”, and has served them “non-stop”.De Villiers had played international cricket for 12 years, including 98 Tests in succession from his debut to July 2015. He missed South Africa’s series in Bangladesh on that occasion, because of paternity commitments.”It is vigorous. The practice schedule and the playing. And he has been going like this since 2004. He has done so much and if he is not wise he will break down again. I have seen no difference in the way he feels about playing for South Africa.”Bacher was interviewing de Villiers for his television series at de Villiers’ old school, Affies, where Bacher also read out a message from Sachin Tendulkar in praise of AB.”I got hold of Sachin Tendulkar, who was my first interviewee for the show in 2010, and I asked him to send me a few words about AB. He holds AB in such regard for the way he has changed the context of the modern game. AB is a special person and a special cricketer. South Africa must not forget that.”

Rio Ferdinand Claims He’d Be Worth £400k-p/w These Days

If Premier League legends played in their prime in today’s market, there’s no doubting that the fees negotiated would be up there with some of the highest that we’ve ever seen. The inflation in fees has seen the likes of Antony hit the £82m mark, so we dread to think how much the likes of Rio Ferdinand would be worth.Ever the confident defender, however, even if backed up by his illustrious career, Ferdinand believes that he’d be worth more than double the £75m fee that Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk back in January 2018.

Who are the most expensive players in football history?

Given the price that he thinks he’d be worth, the former Manchester United defender would rank among the most expensive players in history. According to Transfermark, the top five list has Neymar sitting top after his move to Paris Saint-Germain cost €222m (£190.71m). Meanwhile, his PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe cost the French club €180m (£154.6m).

Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele make up third and fourth at €135m (£115.9m), whilst João Félix cost Atletico Madrid €127.20m (£109.2m).

So, with that said, given the fact that Ferdinand told his FIVE YouTube channel that he believes he’d be worth £170m in today’s market, the defender would rank second in the most expensive players of all time.

The Premier League winner would also become the most expensive defender in football history, thankfully taking the mantle from a certain Harry Maguire, who cost United £80m back in 2019. The less said about that transfer, the better.

Perhaps if United had a player of Ferdinand’s level these days then they wouldn’t be going through such a difficult spell without many major trophies – ending a six-year drought with their Carabao Cup triumph last term. It must be said, however, not many clubs in world football could splash out more than £150m on a player, no matter the ability.

Ferdinand would be worth spending the money on if a club had the funds available. Even in the modern game, where defenders need to be press resistant and able to play from the back, he would thrive, as highlighted in a compilation put together by @niamhutd:

What did Rio Ferdinand say?

Speaking on his YouTube channel when the topic of how much he’d be worth in today’s market came up, Ferdinand said: “£100m would be cheap for me in today’s market. £170m, £400,000-a-week. That’s what I’ll be now.”

Bear in mind, PSG reportedly could sell Mbappe for €150m (£129) this summer.

The £400k in wages is an interesting number, too. Within Manchester United’s current squad, that would put the defender top of the Red Devils’ earners, as per Salary Sport, with David de Gea losing top spot. So, on that front, United can count themselves lucky that Ferdinand is not in his prime and playing these days.

Perception about my batting will change – Pujara

Cheteshwar Pujara says improved shot making and a change in approach has helped him evolve as a Test batsman

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Feb-20172:27

‘Have added more shots to my game now’

Cheteshwar Pujara is no stranger to quick fifties or even quick hundreds, but they are generally his marches from 150 to 200 rather than 0 to 50. Like the time he went from 60 to 100 in 34 balls against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 2012-13. In a Ranji game he has once gone from 150 to 200 in 17 balls. In a triple-century against West Indies A, Pujara scored 71 off the last 55 balls he faced, striking everything cleanly even as he turned down singles when batting with the No. 11 . In the ongoing Test in Hyderabad, though, with India pushing for a declaration, Pujara went at it from ball one, and ended up with an unbeaten 54 off 58 with a hooked six. While the logic behind the innings is clear – he could play so freely because India were not going to bat for long – Pujara sought to clear perceptions around him. Pujara is not part of India’s limited-overs squads, and doesn’t have an IPL contract, but hoped things were going to change soon. He is part of the pool in the IPL auction, which will take place on February 20.”We wanted to accelerate, we just wanted to bat for a session,” Pujara said. “We wanted to get as many as possible that is why I was playing freely. There is a perception that I can’t play many shots. But if you look at the domestic cricket and overall, the way I have played, this was one of the occasions that gave me an opportunity to express myself and I did that.”I am very hopeful that perception will go soon. I have got a T20 hundred in a DY Patil Tournament. Probably I am batting freely, I have added a few shots to my game, which is helping me. Even in Test format, the way I am striking the ball, the way I have been batting in the last few series, I have changed my game, which is helping me in T20 and one-day game. In near future I think things will change.”India fans don’t have cause for worry, though. Pujara will still sell his wicket dearly in Tests. “The approach was quite different as there was a situation where I could play freely,” Pujara said. “I could take some risks and play my shots. Because when it comes to Test cricket, you still have to put a price on your wicket and when you are playing in first innings, you don’t want to play any rash out get out and put the team in trouble. This was an opportunity where we just had to bat for one session, and even if I got out, we had batsmen who could come in and accelerate.”Things went to plan as India scored 158 runs in first session to give Bangladesh four sessions to survive. R Ashwin then gave India clear advantage with two out the three second-innings wicket to fall. Earlier in the day Ashwin had set the record for being the fastest man to 250 Test wickets. Pujara paid tribute to the world’s No. 1 bowler.”Probably he is the toughest spinner when it comes to any opposition team,” Pujara said. “Many teams are always planning on how they are going to face Ashwin. The kind of brain he has, it’s not just about bowling; he thinks as a batsman, he knows what are the weakness of batsman and what are the areas he needs to bowl. I think it’s the experience.”With the ball beginning to turn on day four, Pujara expected India to win the Test even though Bangladesh resisted them in the first innings. “I think the ball has started turning now,” Pujara said. “Probably the wicket is slightly on the slower side but at the same time probably it has opened up and there should be more assistance for spinners tomorrow. We expected the ball to turn from day three but it started turning more from day four onwards rather than day three.”Anyway, the way we performed as a bowling unit, a lot of credit goes to the bowlers. It wasn’t an easy wicket where you can run through the sides. They bowled with a lot of patience. They had to work hard to get them out.”

Chelsea: TalkSPORT man reacts as Boehly to sign "extraordinary talent"

Chelsea has agreed a €15million (£12.95m) fee with Brazilian side Santos for 18-year-old winger Angelo Gabriel according to a number of reports.

Speaking on talkSPORT, South American expert Tim Vickery revealed that the man management of Mauricio Pochettino will be key in getting the youngster's career back on track after a disappointing campaign.

What is the latest news regarding Angelo to Chelsea?

According to multiple reports, The Blues have agreed a fee with Santos to sign the winger, who is set to sign a contract at the club until 2028.

The Brazilian youth internationals contract at Santos contained a € 60m release clause, but the Brasileiro Serie A side have agreed to sell for €15m.

Barcelona held preferential rights to match any offer received for the 18-year-old, a clause they've held for over a year, however, it appears the Spanish champions have decided against matching the offer from the London side.

Chelsea plan to send the inside forward out on loan to Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, who finished 15th in Ligue 1 last season, which is the club that current Blues owner Todd Boehly recently purchased for £65m.

Angelo Gabriel is the second player to head to Stamford Bridge from Brazilian football this year, after Andrey Santos joined from Vasco de Gama in January.

What did Tim Vickery say about Angelo?

Tim Vickery revealed that Chelsea and manager Pochettino have a major part to play in helping get Angelo's career back on track after it stalled a bit this season.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Vickery said: "I mean this year Santos are dreadful. They're really not playing well, and he's lost his place in the starting lineup, so he's on the bench, coming off the bench, so his career is stalled a little bit. He has immense promise, Barcelona had the option on him and Barcelona had to wave that option before Chelsea were free to sign him.

His career has stalled a little bit and this is up to the man management at Chelsea with Pochettino and whatever to get him back on track because he's been marked out as an extraordinary talent for a long time but we all know there's a huge difference that road between promise and reality. It's a long unwinding one and a lot of things can happen so I think because too much pressure has been forced on him too early, he stalled a little bit and Chelsea will have to work hard with the human being in order to get the best out of the player."

Is Angelo Gabriel a good signing for Chelsea?

Angelo has made 129 appearances across his career and has recorded 15 goals and assists. This previous campaign was a disappointing one for the 18-year-old, with him only managing two goals and one assist across 32 games, with a number of appearances coming off the bench as the winger was dropped for an extended spell.

Despite this, the Brazilian has received plenty of praise throughout his career and has been compared to the likes of Paris Saint Germain winger Neymar and Real Madrid winger Rodrygo in the past due to his skills and his similar career start.

His former coach Ariel Holan told SporTV: "I see a lot of potential in Angelo. He is a boy who likes to go for the goal. I really like Brazilian football, and Angelo plays Brazilian football. This essence of dribbling, of taking on the opponent, is very important.

He has a huge future. By working hard, he will be able to play not only at Santos, but I believe that, in the future, he will be able to play in major leagues around the world."

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

It's clear to see Chelsea have a real wonderkid on their hands, who could explode if Pochettino is able to manage him correctly.

Arsenal Keen On Signing £86m "Top Talent"

Arsenal have begun their summer transfer business with a bang, securing a move for Kai Havertz, who joins from Chelsea, while a deal to bring Declan Rice to the Emirates looks set to be announced anytime soon.

With the Gunners finishing second behind Manchester City in the Premier League last season, Mikel Arteta will be hoping to go one better during 2023/24 and improving his first-team squad is vital this summer.

They could even make a move for Moises Caicedo in order to give their midfield that extra edge, although it appears as though Chelsea are frontrunners with regard to that move.

If a move for the Ecuador international doesn’t occur, it appears as though the Gunners could potentially launch a bid for Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni according to one report.

This could cost Arsenal around €100m (£86m) however, with the La Liga side looking to recoup the fee they paid AS Monaco last summer.

Could Arsenal sign Aurelien Tchouameni this summer?

Although it does seem unlikely, anything can happen in the transfer window and with Arteta keen to build a squad which will be able to challenge the might of City, the Frenchman could be a stunning addition.

He enjoyed a relatively solid debut campaign for Madrid, ranking seventh across the squad for his overall Sofascore rating (7.13/10), while ranking third for accurate passes per game (47.8), first for tackles per game (1.9) and interceptions per game (1.5), underlining how important his defensive attributes were to the club.

The Frenchman is among the finest on the continent for a host of defensive metrics, ranking in the top 1% for interceptions per 90, top 8% for clearances per 90 and top 11% for aerials won across Europe’s big five leagues.

Carlo Ancelotti lauded him towards the end of last season, saying: “The future will be bright too; we have top talents like Tchouaméni, Camavinga, Valverde, Ceballos… and they will make history too. It’s different than the others but they’ll be great”.

aurelien-tchouameni-liverpool-premier-league-transfers

Madrid appears to be keen on retaining his services ahead of next season, and there is no doubt the young "monster" – as described by France Under-21 boss Sylvain Ripoll – will get better, taking a while to settle into the demands of playing for a club the stature of Real.

He could certainly be a viable Caicedo alternative if Arteta was to secure a wonderful move for the French midfielder, and it would send a big statement of intent out to their rivals, indicating that last season was no fluke, and they are ready to win trophies.
