Former England allrounder Dimitri Mascarenhas has been appointed coach of the Australia U-16 side that will participate in the national U-17 Championships in Brisbane later this year. Mascarenhas had quit as New Zealand’s bowling coach at the end of the home series against Australia in February to spend more time with his family in Melbourne.Mascarenhas said Cricket Australia high performance chief Pat Howard was influential in his appointment. “I had lots of meetings with lots of different people trying to get jobs and stuff,” Mascarenhas told the . “I spoke quite a few times to Pat Howard to see what we could do and he’s been really good. He said he would help in any way he could.”Mascarenhas, who took over as New Zealand’s bowling coach after Shane Bond left following the 2015 World Cup, said his modus operandi would have to change in his new role.”When I start talking about guys like Trent Boult and Kane Williamson their eyes just light up,” he said. “My language will have to change. I’ll probably just have to bring in an Xbox and an iPad and they’ll be happy.”Mascarenhas represented England in 34 limited-overs games and played in 195 first-class, 268 List A and 130 T20 matches. “I wish that when I was 18 to 24 I would have worked harder on my game. It’s easy to get sucked up in the whole hype of it, getting paid to play cricket.”
Arsenal are expected to have a busy summer as the Gunners look to strengthen their squad following an agonising end to the 2022/23 season.
There have been many positives for Mikel Arteta’s side to enjoy this campaign, however, a disappointing run of form in the final two months consequently ended hopes of their first Premier League title since 2004.
Lack of squad depth is the main culprit for Arsenal’s downfall, as key injuries in defence made the latter stages of the term increasingly difficult, with no clear match in ability to fall back on in absent areas.
With just one game remaining and attention turning to the summer transfer window, Arsenal have been linked with a host of talent, including a valuable name in the capital city.
What’s the latest on Mason Mount to Arsenal?
As reported by Charles Watts at GOAL last month, the Gunners are reportedly one of the clubs interested in Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount.
The report states that Arsenal were to “hold talks” with the 24-year-old over his uncertain future at Stamford Bridge.
It’s since been claimed by SunSport that the Englishman is expected to leave Chelsea this summer, with both Arsenal and Liverpool tracking his movements with a fee expected to be around the £60m mark.
What could Mason Mount bring to Arsenal?
Squad depth is what the Emirates is crying out for, whether that be to increase numbers or to enhance competition between players, having a squad bustling with talent is essential for a team involved in the Champions League.
At just 24-years-old, Mount could be crucial to the Gunners having won the ultimate prize in European football, as well as having gold medals in the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.
The Portsmouth-born midfielder was even lauded by Premier League legend Rio Ferdinand who illuminated his talent when describing the attacking midfielder as a “mad player”, when speaking on Vibe with FIVE.
Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount.
Mount is a particularly competent player on the ball, showcasing his finishing and passing attributes during his time in the Premier League so far, which is echoed by his numbers.
As per FBref, the Englishman ranks in the top 9% of players in his position within Europe’s top five leagues for most progressive passes, averaging 6.04 per 90, showing his desire to move the ball forward to advanced areas.
In an opposing strength, the Chelsea "superstar" – as dubbed by Kalvin Phillips – ranks highly for his exploits off the ball, averaging 2.07 tackles per 90 to highlight his versatility in attacking midfield – as per FBref.
While Martin Odegaard has been formidable for Arsenal this season – scoring 15 league goals – competition is healthy in a squad that wishes to challenge at the top, and the introduction of Mount could gift the Norwegian the essential competition to increase performance.
The two are similar in positional terms, but bring contrasting attributes to the table, as communicated by the Chelsea-man’s ability to track back, with the Arsenal skipper only averaging 1.06 tackles per 90 – as per FBref.
Despite not frequently featuring for Chelsea in their horrendous campaign this term, the Englishman is a player praised by the best in the sport, with Kylian Mbappe heralding him as “superb” in an interview with France Football.
A player that is low on minutes and confidence can break back to their top form in an area that accommodates their style, there is little to doubt that Mount would be a strong fit for Arteta’s plans.
With a new contract not yet accepted in west London, time will tell if the creative player heads northbound to seek a new challenge.

Mohammad Ashraful’s ban from professional cricket will be partially lifted on August 13, allowing him to resume playing at the domestic level in Bangladesh. However, the former Bangladesh captain, who has served three years of his suspension for involvement in match-fixing and spot-fixing in the 2013 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), will only be eligible to play international cricket from 2018.Timeline

*BCB cricket operations chairman Akram Khan later confirmed that Ashraful would not be allowed to play the BPL for another to years. “Ashraful can play domestic cricket but not franchise-based T20 tournament for the next two years,” Akram said.In 2014, Ashraful’s initial eight-year ban was reduced to five years, with two years suspended subject to his participation in a BCB or ICC anti-corruption education and training programme. Accordingly, Ashraful took part in an anti-corruption programme and, during the 2015 BPL, appeared in awareness videos shown to players and officials.A BCB press release in September 2014 had stated that “upon production of a certificate of good conduct from the ICC, he will be eligible to return to cricket on or about August 13, 2016”. Once the ICC issues the certificate, it is understood that Ashraful will be allowed to resume first-class domestic cricket in Bangladesh as well as non-first-class domestic cricket in other ICC members’ jurisdictions from August 13.BCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury said the board was seeking clarification from the ICC on what types of domestic tournaments Ashraful would be eligible to participate in. On whether Ashraful would be able to play franchise-based domestic tournaments in Bangladesh, Chowdhury said, “We have sent a letter to the ICC regarding Ashraful’s issue and we will get to know about the details by Sunday. There are a few aspects which we need to know.”The BPL’s anti-corruption tribunal had, in June 2014, banned Ashraful for eight years and fined him Tk 10 lakh (USD12,500 approx). In September that year, the ban was reduced to five years, with the last two of those years a suspended sentence. The BCB and ICC unsuccessfully appealed against the ban reduction.*1120 GMT August 14, 2016. The story was updated with Akram Khan’s quote.

Tottenham Hotspur could well be set for something of a raid on Feyenoord this summer, amid the club's apparent interest in Mexican marksman, Santiago Gimenez.
What's the latest on Gimenez to Spurs?
While Arne Slot may well have rebuffed interest from Spurs in order to sign a new deal with his Eredivisie club, it seemingly won't stop the north Londoners from targeting his current crop of players.
Following recent reports which claimed that the Lilywhites are interested in playmaker, Orkun Kokcu, 90min are now reporting that the Premier League outfit are also among a host of English clubs who are keen on 22-year-old striker, Gimenez.
The piece notes that Daniel Levy and co are currently monitoring the ten-cap forward ahead of the summer transfer window, although the likes of Aston Villa, Brentford and Brighton and Hove Albion are also said to be in the running for his signature.
Who is Santiago Gimenez?
The highly-coveted starlet is currently enjoying a stunning debut season in the Netherlands, having been a vital part in helping Slot's side to secure title glory.
The former Cruz Azul ace – who made the move to Rotterdam last summer – has seemingly been "on fire" of late, according to talent scout Jacek Kulig, having scored 15 goals in 31 league games, as well as plundering a further five goals in just nine Europa League outings.
Feyenoord's Santiago Gimenez
Valued at a reported fee of just £18m, the goalscoring machine could well follow the aforementioned Slot to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with there a potential for the 6-foot ace to be a dream heir to current Spurs talisman, Harry Kane.
With the latter man the subject of interest from Manchester United amid his expiring contract, there is likely to be a concern as to whether the England skipper will be at the club next season, having yet again led the line superbly this term with a standout tally of 28 league goals.
Trying to fill the void for a player who is now the leading scorer in the club's history is no small feat, although Levy were to turn to an inform marksman, like Gimenez, it could prove an astute move.
As the youngster's goalscoring heroics this season have showcased, he seemingly mirrors Kane in his ability to offer a clinical presence in attack, having also previously chipped in with 21 goals in 105 games during his time in Mexico.
Equally, even if Kane were to stay put it would not be the worst move to bring in a younger asset to act as a quality understudy, helping to ease the reliance on the Three Lions star in the process.
As such, even if Slot isn't the man to replace Antonio Conte in the dugout, Spurs should certainly consider trying to bring Gimenez in.
Tottenham Hotspur may be set for a hitch in their efforts to try and sign Manor Solomon as Fulham are keen to keep him at Craven Cottage, according to journalist Dean Jones.
What's the latest transfer news involving Manor Solomon?
As per The Athletic, Tottenham are keen on signing Solomon this summer and he would be available for nothing due to the fact that he suspended his contract with Shakhtar Donetsk last year due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The report states that FIFA have ruled that he is free to move for nothing in the off-season and clubs around Europe have been put on alert by this development as he intends to suspend his deal by a further year.
Of course, Solomon is on loan at Fulham and enjoyed a productive campaign at Craven Cottage, netting five times in 24 appearances in all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.
According to The Sun, Fulham also want to sign the Israel international on a permanent basis and will endeavour to secure his signature despite protestations from Shakhtar Donetsk chief executive Sergei Palkin, who stated in a recent interview: "The over-reaching measures applied by Fifa led to massive loss of player transfer income and a depletion of essential Club revenues. We believe the extension of Annex 7 continues to place clubs like FC Shakhtar in Ukraine in a seriously disadvantaged position with zero protection and threatens our very existence."
Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jones thinks that Fulham would be very keen to sign the £20k-a-week earner this summer, potentially derailing Spurs' plans to swoop for his services.
Jones told FFC: "The interest in Manor Solomon is interesting, I know that Fulham anticipate him staying and have been hopeful that they would be able to extend his time at Craven Cottage. It's obviously quite complicated because of the manner of this transfer and how he ended up signing for Fulham in the first place."
Would Tottenham Hotspur suffer a blow by missing out on Manor Solomon?
Given his availability on a free transfer and his promising start to life in English football, it would be a miss for Tottenham if they were to be stumped in their efforts to land Solomon by Fulham.
As per WhoScored, the 23-year-old has managed to complete around one dribble per match in the Premier League this term, illustrating that the Israeli does have the propensity to beat his marker with regularity.
FBRef also show that Solomon is an extremely hardworking player to have in the ranks and he has excelled in comparison to his positional peers across Europe's top five divisions in the art of tackling, successfully winning 3.15 challenges per 90 minutes over the last 365 days, putting him in the first percentile for this metric.
Solomon has a lot to give and can still improve in the coming years and it would be a shame for Spurs if they were to miss out on signing a talented star in the ilk of the Fulham ace, especially when their squad is devoid of offensive depth.

James Sutherland, the Cricket Australia chief executive, has narrowed his focus on high performance failings as a reason for the national team’s dire recent displays in Asian Test matches

James Sutherland, the Cricket Australia chief executive, has narrowed his focus on high performance failings as a reason for the national team’s dire recent displays in Asian Test matches, adding scrutiny to the roles of the team performance manager Pat Howard and the selection panel. In response to repeated questioning about Australia’s three-nil hiding at the hands of an unfancied Sri Lanka in their recent Test series – a result that cost Steven Smith’s side their No. 1 ranking in the longest format – Sutherland’s rhetoric has shifted from patience to a more urgent tone. His latest words, on the day CA announced an additional $500,000 in funding for the Growing Cricket for Girls fund, followed a raft of criticism from former players, including the ex-CA Board director Mathew Hayden and the recently retired captain Michael Clarke, about the decision to rest Smith from the latter limited overs portion of the Sri Lanka tour. While Sutherland defended that decision as a matter of necessity, he was more questioning of how Australia’s players did not appear to be adding the requisite adaptability to their games.”Are some of the fundamental things that we are doing to prepare our players to perform well and be highy competitive in subcontinental conditions passing the test?” Sutherland told “I think that’s where the review gets a little bit more meaty and challenging and more fundamental, going right down into questioning our high-performance systems as well.”To be a bonafide international cricketer in this day and age, you need to be able to adapt to conditions in Australia, conditions in England, conditions in the subcontinent … wherever you play,” he said. “And that adaptability is something that needs to be reviewed because some are adapting and some aren’t.”Speaking about the longer term, Sutherland stated that Australian cricket had to reach a point where “in 10 years’ time when we tour India there is a pool of hundreds of players that could be on that tour”. These words will not be lost on Howard, out of contract next year, or the selection chairman Rod Marsh, also with a deal due to expire in 2017. CA recently hired Graham Manou to manage the junior talent pathway. On the subject of Smith, Sutherland described the captain’s imposed rest as a product of the game’s increasingly cluttered schedule. “It’s obviously far more preferable for him to stay and see that through,” he said, “but the nature of international cricket today and the calendar is that at times we need to make decisions that are in the best interests of the individual and the team.”In coming weeks at the next round of ICC meetings, Sutherland will re-embark on a task he has championed for some time – that of changing cricket’s global structures to allow more room between matches, and greater context so each contest has an easily understandable reason for existing, and by extension greater value for fans and broadcasters.
