West Ham saluted for ‘remarkable’ transfer breakthrough

West Ham United have pulled off a ‘remarkable’ deal for Lucas Paqueta, according to journalist Manuel Veth.

The lowdown

The Hammers officially confirmed the signing of Paqueta from Ligue 1 outfit Lyon in the last 24 hours.

He became the club’s eighth arrival of the summer transfer window, following Gianluca Scamacca, Nayef Aguerd, Maxwel Cornet, Emerson Palmieri, Thilo Kehrer, Flynn Downes and Alphonse Areola (who made his loan move permanent) through the door.

West Ham’s London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal had previously been linked with Paqueta, as had Manchester United (via Evening Standard).

The latest

Veth of Transfermarkt and Forbes delved into the details of the move on Twitter.

He explained that 43% of the potential transfer fee wasn’t guaranteed, but that the deal could still make history for West Ham if it amounts to €60.63m (£51.8m), adding that Paqueta’s former club Milan were in line to receive some of the proceeds.

Veth tweeted: “Remarkable deal! Olympique Lyon have revealed that #WHUFC have paid €42.95m plus €18.68m in bonuses. The total fee would be a club record fee for West Ham. #Milan will receive 15% of the transfer profit.”

The verdict

This signing should be regarded as a major coup for West Ham.

Paqueta scored 11 goals and provided seven assists last season for a Lyon team which finished a lowly eighth in the French top flight.

Having made the Ligue 1 Team of the Year in 2020/21, he earned the division’s Player of the Month award last October.

He has also made his mark at international level, notching 33 caps to date for Brazil, who are currently the number one-ranked international team in the world.

The 25-year-old looks like a potential difference-maker as West Ham look to improve upon last season’s seventh-place finish.

Wolves struck gold on Jose Sa

When Wolverhampton Wanderers sold Rui Patricio to AS Roma last summer, the Molineux faithful may have been worried about who would be a suitable long-term replacement for the Portuguese goalkeeper.

The 34-year-old became one of the club’s big statement signings when they were promoted to the Premier League in 2018 and went on to make 127 appearances, keeping 37 clean sheets in the process.

Bruno Lage has hit the jackpot on his replacement, however, with Jose Sa impressing so far during his spell at the club.

Wolves hit the jackpot with Sa

A £6.25m deal was agreed between Wolves and Olympiacos for the transfer of the Portuguese goalkeeper following Patricio’s departure last summer and his arrival has made the Old Gold all but forget about their former ‘keeper.

The £29k-per-week shot-stopper made 37 appearances in his debut campaign, keeping 11 clean sheets as Wolves finished in the top half of the table.

Three further clean sheets have followed this season, although the club’s goalscoring woes have continued, netting only three times as they sit near the relegation zone.

Lage has gotten the best out of Sa, allowing him to make a seamless transition to the English game and this has been rewarded with a string of solid performances. His value has also skyrocketed too, with CIES Football Observatory valuing the goalkeeper at €20m (£17.8m) – an increase of 165% in just over a year.

It was an excellent move by Lage to bring him to the club and if he continues to perform like this, then there is no reason to suggest why his value cant increase over the next couple of seasons.

Former Old Gold keeper Matt Murray lavished praise on Sa following a victory over Everton last season, saying:

“I’ve been really impressed with Sa. I liked what he had done for Olympiacos, and thought he did really well for them, and it was interesting to see how he came in and stepped into Rui Patricio’s shoes.

“He’s very good with his feet and is very composed, and Wolves want to have more possession and play with a higher line, and he’s that dominant goalkeeper. I’ve been really impressed and by all accounts from the lads, he’s a proper top guy, a real character and good in the dressing room.”

As Wolves’ attacking options continue to flatter to deceive, it’s a good job Sa is constantly saving them from even more misery.

Celtic: Reporter reacts to Cameron Carter-Vickers injury

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has been reacting to an injury to Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers during the international break.

The Lowdown: International break injuries

Carter-Vickers was absent in the Hoops’ 2-0 defeat to St Mirren prior to the international break and was left out of the USA squad due to a ‘minor’ injury. The centre-back is also thought to be a major doubt for this weekend’s clash with Motherwell.

Celtic’s issues went from bad to worse during the international break, with Daizen Maeda, Sead Haksabanovic and Giorgos Giakoumakis all suffering injury scares while representing their countries.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments

O’Rourke, talking to The Transfer Tavern, labelled Carter-Vickers a Celtic ‘leader’ and said that the injury is ‘a blow to Ange Postecoglou’s side’.

“He is a bit of a leader in that Celtic team, so to lose him will be a blow to Ange Postecoglou’s side because the replacements are nowhere near as good as Carter-Vickers.”

The Verdict: Postecoglou’s options

Carl Starfelt has been out for almost a month now, last featuring against Rangers on September 3, with Postecoglou hinting that he could ‘potentially’ return after the international break.

Stephen Welsh and Moritz Jenz started against St Mirren, so the Hoops boss may have to call upon the pair once again, should Carter-Vickers and Starfelt miss out.

Welsh especially struggled last time out and was one of the worst performing outfield Celtic players, as per SofaScore, with a match rating of 6.5/10, so Postecoglou will be hoping for an improved display, while also wanting Starfelt and Carter-Vickers back fit as soon as possible.

Aston Villa: Pete O’Rourke makes big Jacob Ramsey transfer claim

Aston Villa could land ‘a bigger fee’ for Jacob Ramsey than the one they received for Jack Grealish, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Ramsey at Villa

Ramsey, who came all the way through the academy ranks and turned 21 in May, has been a first-team regular at Villa Park since the 2020/21 campaign. The central midfielder has now racked up 72 senior appearances after progressing through the youth teams, contributing to ten goals.

His displays earlier this year led to speculation of an England call-up from Gareth Southgate, though that is still yet to materialise.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments

Talking to The Transfer Tavern regarding Ramsey, O’Rourke believes the midfielder has the potential to become a ‘top player’ and didn’t rule out the possibility of Villa receiving a club-record fee in the future, eclipsing the £100m fee Manchester City paid for Grealish.

“I think he could go on and be a top player. The way transfer fees are right now in football, you would never say never that Villa might be able to go and get a bigger fee than they got for Jack Grealish.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-updates-copy/” title=”Aston Villa latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Exciting…

Ramsey appears to be at home in the Premier League and you can imagine him going from strength to strength in the Midlands after signing a new five-year deal back in April.

Should he improve on his already impressive game in years to come, then there is every chance his career-high £22.5m Transfermarkt valuation will continue to grow.

That could well result in some of Europe’s biggest clubs showing a real interest, and who knows, Ramsey could follow in Grealish’s footsteps by sealing a big-money exit.

Arsenal: Tomiyasu impresses in rare chance

Arsenal kept up their perfect start to the Europa League as they eased to victory over Bodo/Glimt at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday night.

The Gunners put in a strong display to defeat the Norwegian minnows 3-0 and now head into this weekend’s Premier League clash with Liverpool buoyed by confidence, where they’ll be looking to keep their place atop the standings there too.

Academy graduate Eddie Nketiah opened the scoring for the north Londoners before centre-back Rob Holding headed home to double the lead just moments later, then it wasn’t until after the break that Fabio Vieira wrapped things up after some good work from substitute Gabriel Jesus.

It was a night for rare chances as Arteta rotated the bulk of his starting XI in a bid to hand out valuable minutes to those that needed it and after a goal and an assist, the Portuguese maestro was certainly in the running for the ‘Man of the Match’ award come full-time.

However, the performance of Takehiro Tomiyasu on both flanks particularly caught the eye as he fully took his golden opportunity to impress Arteta. The Japan international’s early-season injury, combined with the form of Ben White at right-back, has seen him struggle to get back into the lineup.

He started the encounter on the right before switching to the other flank after the 70th-minute introduction of the Englishman.

No player registered more touches than Tomiyasu (83), which shows just how influential he was throughout the game – even Granit Xhaka (30) and Vieira (37) couldn’t match such returns, despite appearing to pull the strings in the engine room.

Also per SofaScore, the 23-year-old defender – who ex-teammate Mitchell Dijks dubbed a “warrior” – was a rock defensively after he won five of his six duels (83%), both on the ground and in the air, and he managed two tackles, two clearances and one interception, too.

A passing accuracy of 82% (from 65 attempts) and a 100% dribble success rate (2/2) highlighted his willingness to get forward, which is perhaps something that White – a natural centre-back – lacks when he’s deployed in the role. Not that it’s his job to get into the final third but it does show that the former Bologna man is still a viable option for the remainder of the season.

The Japanese right-back’s display also caught the eye of football.london reporter Kaya Kaynak, who graded Tomiyasu amongst his best performers on the night – ‘Got forward superbly and showed that he’s more than ready to fill the right-back spot if Ben White finds his standards slipping at any point,’ he wrote.

Having cost the Gunners around £16m in August 2021, it’s evident that the versatile defender isn’t going to be forgotten about anytime soon after he took this rare chance to deliver on the European stage.

AND in other news, Edu hit the jackpot on “untouchable” £40k-p/w Arsenal gem whose value has rocketed 94%…

Romano drops Aston Villa-Luiz update

Fabrizio Romano has shared more information on Douglas Luiz’s new Aston Villa deal, which runs until 2026.

The Lowdown: Luiz signs new deal

On Friday, it was confirmed that Luiz has extended his stay at Villa Park, signing a new long-term contract after months of speculation regarding his future.

Arsenal tried to sign the Brazilian a number of times on deadline day, but to no avail, and with his old deal expiring in 2023, many felt his departure was a given.

Instead, Luiz has committed his future to Villa, in what is undoubtedly a positive piece of news for the club.

The Latest: Romano provides more info

Writing on Twitter, Romano explained the length of the deal and revealed that both parties were actually in talks over an extension immediately after the summer window closed:

“More on Douglas Luiz. Understand new deal with Aston Villa will be valid until June 2026, four year contract.

“Negotiations started right after the end of the market as Arsenal had three bid rejected for Douglas on Deadline Day.”

The Verdict: Great news for Gerrard

This is a massive boost for Gerrard and anyone associated with Villa, considering what an influential figure Luiz has been in the middle of the park, being described as ‘fantastic’ by journalist Gregg Evans.

The 24-year-old has appeared in eight Premier League games so far this season, averaging one tackle per game, and while his form hasn’t necessarily been at its best, the Villans are stronger when he is involved.

Not only that but if Luiz does demand a move next summer, Villa are now in an extremely strong bargaining position, being able to demand huge money for his services.

West Brom: Corberan in advanced talks

West Bromwich Albion are in ‘advanced talks’ to appoint Carlos Corberan as their new manager, and a deal ‘could be completed’ within the next 24 hours, according to Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett.

The Lowdown: Extensive manager search

The Championship side have been on the hunt to find Steve Bruce’s successor following his sacking earlier this month and have been linked to several candidates, one of those being the 39-year-old.

The Spaniard is reported to have held two interviews with the Hawthorns hierarchy, and it now sounds like he is close to taking over the reins in the Midlands.

The Latest: WBA in talks with Corberan

Taking to Twitter, Dorsett revealed that West Brom are in the final stages of negotiations with Corberan, and he could be unveiled as the new boss imminently should he accept to join. He wrote:

“#wba in advanced talks with Carlos Corberan over head coach vacancy. A deal could be completed by the end of the weekend.”

The Verdict: A perfect fit

Corberan is a much younger profile of manager than the Baggies would normally go for, but he would be the perfect candidate given his previous track record in England.

Last season, the 4-3-3 attacking boss led the Terriers all the way to the Championship play-off final and was just one game away from achieving promotion to the Premier League.

The Cheste-born coach is also a free agent meaning that there will be no compensation to pay for his services, making this an ideal move for both parties.

Tottenham: Insiders share exciting stadium naming rights update

Tottenham Hotspur insiders/sources have now shared an exciting naming rights update, according to a recent report.

The Lowdown: Spurs enter talks…

Spurs have entered ‘meaningful talks’ with big name technological giant Google in recent weeks as chairman Daniel Levy and chief commercial officer Todd Kline attempt to end the club’s three-year long search for a sponsorship deal.

The Lilywhites have been trying to find a buyer for their lucrative naming rights since moving to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2019 – a state-of-the-art new ground estimated to cost £1 billion.

Amid these discussions with Google over sealing the naming rights, it has been reported that fellow major company Amazon are ‘still in the running’.

Such an agreement would gift the north Londoners a financial off-field windfall as Spurs seek a potential deal worth around £25 million-per-year.

The Latest: Tottenham insiders expect record-breaking deal

Now, according to a report in the last 48 hours, an exciting naming rights update has come out of Spurs.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-3/” title=”Tottenham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is claimed two Tottenham insiders/sources have told Football Insider that the north Londoners are plotting to announce a huge naming rights deal before Christmas with a timeline now set.

As well as this, it is reiterated both Google and Amazon are still competing for a ten-year deal which could be worth around £25m-per-year.

The report mentions both Levy and Kline specifically with the Spurs chiefs attempting to agree a never-before-seen naming rights deal with an ‘English record-agreement’.

The Verdict: Great news…

Under the guidance of manager Antonio Conte and sporting director Fabio Paratici, the Hotspur Way side have enjoyed a steady rise on the field, currently sitting in the Premier League’s top three.

Now, it is up to Levy and Kline to assist the Italians by securing a multi-million pound windfall for the club, and with any luck, a fair portion of it will be re-invested into the first team.

Warner ducks under Steyn barbs

The Australia vice-captain brushed off Dale Steyn’s comments of “cutting off the head of the snake” as “fast-bowler talk”

Daniel Brettig01-Nov-20162:37

Hopefully South Africa bowlers get carried away and bowl short – Warner

In the surest sign yet of his cricketing evolution, Australia’s vice-captain David Warner has done something once unthinkable for him and swayed out of the way of a verbal bouncer from South Africa’s spearhead Dale Steyn.Tossed a recitation of Steyn’s words about “cutting off the head” of the Australian team by targeting their leadership, Warner refused to take a swat at it. This very notion would have seemed ridiculous little more than 18 months ago: just ask Jonathan “scared eyes” Trott or Rohit “speak English” Sharma.’Scarred’ Warner avoids Starc in nets

Whether it is by accident or design to protect his battered fingers, David Warner is happy to avoid Mitchell Starc in the nets at the WACA Ground, famously the fastest pitches of their kind in the world.
“I don’t have to face him too much [in the nets]. That’s the beauty of this format with the coaching staff tinkering with the batting line-up, I’ve had some scars in my past at these nets,” Warner said. “It’s just fortunate enough I’ve been selected to bat in different groups. But he’s bowling quick in those nets, if you ask any player that’s played the game or presently that’s practised on these wickets, it’s the scariest one on the calendar.
“He looked very ready to go in the latter part of his spell in Queensland, got the ball through nicely and started shaping the ball as well, which is what we like to see. If we go back 12 months and see what he delivered out here, if there’s a bit more pace in that wicket it could be even scarier. I feel he’s ready to go.”

But two days out from the start of a Test match that may well dictate the course of the summer for an Australian side still establishing a fresh identity under the leadership of Steven Smith and his deputy, Warner chose discretion to be the better part of valour. He even invited South Africa’s pacemen to get angry in the hope it would result in poor bowling.”There are 11 players in the team and if Dale wants to start playing that game I’ll let him do that,” Warner said on Tuesday. “For us it’s about going out and doing our best, and if he feels that cutting the head off the snake then everyone else falls apart, I don’t see that happening at all.”That’s the fast-bowler talk, we’re not going to entertain those thoughts or scenarios, we’re just going to go out there, back ourselves and do what we do best. That is [to] play positive cricket. We know the conditions we’re going to face out here, so hopefully they do get carried away and start bowling short and fast, because at the end of the day you’ve got to bowl at the stumps to get wickets.”Warner has taken to a nickname of “the reverend”, coined by team-mates for the way he has abstained from sledging and other inflammatory tactics in search of a more serene approach. Perhaps the most fascinating element of all this is it takes him away from the confrontational streak that has seemingly informed a lot of his best innings, notably his dominant tour of South Africa in 2014.”I feel that it’s come more with maturity, that I’ve started to let my bat do the talking,” Warner said. “That’s what happens when you evolve as a player and you get to a point where you understand the game well enough. [Kagiso] Rabada spoke the other day about banter out there and you know he’s a young guy coming through and that’s something he gains confidence through.”I know he said a few words when we were in South Africa, but you love that as a batsman. I feel now that I let my bat do the talking and that’s all I have to worry about when I’m out there. With the new [ICC] laws and the demerit points they go for two years, so I can’t afford to sit out a game.”Intriguingly, Warner reflected that his dominance in South Africa two years ago stemmed as much from good fortune as a combative attitude, noting how many dropped catches allowed him to make a century at Centurion, another pair of substantial scores in Port Elizabeth and then twin hundreds at Newlands.”There was a lot of luck. Think I got dropped every game,” Warner said. “I think that we had a great bowling attack there, we had the intimidation factor. We had players who verbally got together and really showed presence out there. I think that’s what we really needed to get over the South Africans. They had a fantastic line-up, batting and bowling.”We felt we really had to have that presence in their own backyard as we always have to have in our own backyard…. But over there I think there was just something different about the Australian cricket team. We knew we had to fight together to beat them on their home turf and we managed to do that.”But as we know, Test cricket, the best ones go down to that last hour [in Cape Town] and it was a fantastic effort from the bowlers predominantly to grind out that day because I think we had Adelaide in the back of our minds when we played there. For myself looking back at that, [I’ve] got to try and look at what worked for me then to try and make it work this summer.”To that end, Warner will be working alongside Shaun Marsh, another century-maker on that tour, who will open the batting at home for Australia for the first time. Though he has batted all the way up and down the order for Western Australia, it is actually as an opener that Marsh has been most successful, averaging 49.54 from 27 first-class innings as an opener down under.”When SOS [Marsh] doesn’t say much to me I think I am in a great position,” Warner said. “Because we all know SOS is a man of few words. He’s an intense player, the feedback we get when we’re out there together is we try and rotate strike a fair bit, that’s one thing we really work on as a partnership, and he likes to leave a lot of balls early on in his innings. I’m a bit different, I like to feel bat on ball.”But we work very well together, we’ve batted together in one-dayers, Test matches, we know each other very well and that’s the good thing about coming into a Test series. When you know your partner at the other end, and I was fortunate that the selectors have gone that way as well, instead of picking someone who was fresh and new.”Warner’s other partner this summer is his captain. Recent insights offered by Michael Clarke and Brad Haddin have sharpened focus on the role of the vice-captain, and Warner is wise to the need to operate well in concert with Smith for the sake of the team. “For me it’s about making his job easier,” he said.”Doing the little things around the group to make sure his job is just solely based on out on the field being tactical, bowling changes, etc. And away from the field just making sure the troops are upbeat and ready to go. If anyone needs anything I ask the guys come to me and just let Smudge think about what he has to do for the Test match coming up.”You guys know Steven, he’s a very simple, down-to-earth guy, he’s very cruisy, so he actually likes being a bit more hands-on, likes getting feedback from the guys which is great. I just try and make his life a little bit easier if I can.”

West Brom could ditch Grant for Jerry Yates

Having undergone a torrid season thus far, the appointment of Carlos Corberan was expected to instantly turn the tide at West Bromwich Albion.

However, their game against Sheffield United saw the façade come crashing down, as they lost 2-0 with the only two shots on target they conceded.

Despite this, it is their toothless nature that has truly let them down so far.

The Baggies have scored just 20 goals in 17 games and sit rock bottom of the Championship on just 14 points.

Karlan Grant was supposed to be the man to ensure this would never be the case – having been signed for £15m back in 2020 – but just three goals so far make for a dismal return. Indeed, he could be set for a spell out of the team come January with the Baggies casting their eyes towards attacking reinforcements.

Although Steve Bruce was afforded only £1.21m to spend in the summer, recent reports have emerged claiming that not only are they looking to secure a £25m loan for January, but West Brom also want to sign the top scorer in the division.

That’s according to reports just last week from the Scottish Sun, who note interest from the Midlands club as well as Rangers, Brentford, Watford and Bournemouth.

The 25-year-old has scored nine goals already this campaign, yet his Blackpool side still sits 15th.

It is therefore expected that he would be open to a move, and with West Brom’s aspirations of promotion in the coming seasons, it might be something he would be keen on.

His former boss Richie Wellens has led the praise for the marksman, claiming: “He’s good at everything. He’s got decent pace, he can hold the ball up…he’s a fantastic professional that wants to get everything out of his career.”

Arguably, to get the best out of his career, the next logical step up would be to move to a club the size of the Baggies.

If Corberan can secure both the loan and the signing of Yates, it would certainly offer a huge boost to what has so far been a dismal campaign and it could also see Grant axed from the team.

Whether it forces Albion’s current striker into action or pushes him into obsoletion, it would be a wonderful signing to kickstart the Spaniard’s reign.
