Manchester United’s Paul Pogba shares a brilliant snap with Christian Pulisic

[ad_pod ]

The opening fixture of the new 2019/20 Premier League season has not really been kind to everyone in the English top-flight.

One team in particular that suffered a great loss was Chelsea.

Frank Lampard’s big Premier League debut was a devastating 4-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford and it certainly left them with a sour taste in their mouths.

But despite that seeming like a rather cruel day for the boys from London, Paul Pogba took to Instagram to show everyone what football is all about.

The Frenchman shared a brilliant snap with Chelsea’s own star, Christian Pulisic, and he captioned it as “This is why we play”.

The photo depicted both players as they walked off the pitch together, looking more like friends than rivals and in a way breaching that gap and showing us all that, at the end of the day, this is just a game.

It was definitely a great gesture by the French Red Devil.

Rangers fans are furious with Andy Halliday’s display against East Fife

Andy Halliday filled in at left-back for Rangers in their 3-0 win over East Fife, and the fans hope it’ll be the last time he does so after a poor individual performance.

The 27-year-old led the Gers out in the League Cup second round tie with the League One side, but it’s safe to say fans weren’t impressed with their captain on the day.

Steven Gerrard’s men cruised to a 3-0 victory over the third-tier opposition even with the underperforming Halliday at left-back. Goals from Jermain Defoe, Filip Helander and Joe Aribo means they’ll travel to Livingston in the quarter-finals of the League Cup next month.

The greatest player ever to grace the Scottish Premiership is revealed in the video below…

Despite the comfortable win, the fans weren’t happy with the makeshift defender as he struggled to impress against part-time opposition. Normally a midfielder, the former Bradford man has often featured at left-back, covering for the out-of-sorts Borna Barisic.

Here’s what the fans had to say about Halliday’s poor afternoon on Twitter:

Leeds winger Jack Clarke is doing himself no favours, according to Graham Smyth

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking to episode 65 of the Inside Elland Road podcast, produced by Yorkshire Evening Post, Graham Smyth has had his say on one of the major Leeds talking points in Jack Clarke.

What’s he said?

Leeds were unbeaten in 2019/20 before the visit of Stoke on Tuesday evening.

The Whites defeated the Potters in convincing fashion by winning 3-0 at the weekend but this game was entirely different.

Marcelo Bielsa made eight changes to his starting XI, as Clarke started on the left-hand side but failed to really do much.

He earned a match rating of five from YEP which demonstrated his torrid evening.

The teenager was dragged off at half time as Smyth then provided his thoughts on the situation. Speaking to the Inside Elland Road podcast, he said:

“There are players with a little bit of question marks over. Jack Clarke last night didn’t really do himself many favours and isn’t getting much of a look in at the moment. That’s one to watch.”

The Clarke conundrum

Clarke was one of the most promising youngsters at Leeds last season, finding himself involved in four goals across league action despite starting just four times in the Championship.

However, those minimal starts made it somewhat of a surprise that he actually then departed the club.

Tottenham snapped him up for £10m this summer before the teenager was sent back on loan to the Whites in search of regular first-team football.

That hasn’t been granted and he’s found himself down the pecking order behind more senior professionals.

The youngster has appeared for the U23s but his only senior minutes have come in Cup action. He started against Salford, albeit at right wing-back before being shifted over to the opposite side in the second-round.

It was another frustrating performance, though, as fans took to Twitter after the game to slam the 18-year-old.

Some said that he should head back to Spurs and it wouldn’t be a great surprise if that measure was taken in January.

After all, now Leeds are out of the Carabao Cup, his chances of attaining minutes in Bielsa’s XI seem even slimmer.

A temporary move back to Leeds seemed the best option for his career at that moment in time but as Smyth says, he’s done himself no favours. Maybe heading to London would now be a better route.

West Brom fans beg West Ham not to recall Grady Diangana

[ad_pod ]

Grady Diangana has been an inspired signing for West Bromwich Albion thus far.

The Baggies secured the attacker on a loan deal from West Ham United during the summer window.

And the 21-year-old has managed three goals in four Championship appearances for Slaven Bilic’s side.

Diangana is due to spend the entire 2019-20 campaign with West Brom, although West Ham might well consider a recall if his excellent form continues. Football FanCast recently revealed that they have the option to do so.

A mid-season return to the London Stadium is certainly a fear for the Baggies supporters, with many taking to social media to express their concern.

Indeed, the Championship club’s fans responded to a tweet from West Ham’s official website by begging the Premier League club not to recall him in January.

West Brom are going well in the second tier this season – collecting 12 points from their six matches to occupy fourth spot in the table.

England fans blast Danny Rose for poor showing against Bulgaria

[ad_pod ]

England returned to the top of Group A following their 4-0 rout of Bulgaria at Wembley on Saturday evening as Tottenham’s Harry Kane played a huge part, scoring a hat-trick and assisting the other.

However, it was his Spurs teammate Danny Rose that received a lot of reaction on social media after his inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s starting line-up.

And that was just the start as several England fans grew frustrated at his performance in the Three Lions shirt as the game went on.

The only other left-back named in the match squad was Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell, but he was placed on the bench – presumably because he had been out injured and only made his Premier League return just days before the international break got underway.

That was Rose’s 28th cap for England though – at last summer’s World Cup, Ashley Young donned the left flank ahead of the 29-year-old.

Several superlatives were used to describe various aspects of his performance including ‘shocking,’ ‘poor’ and ‘awful.’

One supporter claimed the Spurs defender was stealing a living in an England shirt whilst another believed Rose would be a great player if he could cross a ball.

Here’s the best of the reaction:

Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen posts on Instagram after disappointing Denmark result

The Tottenham midfielder posted a message in his native language thanking the fans and ensuring them that they will give it their all to recover in October when the next qualifiers roll around.

Eriksen’s heroics carried Denmark to the last major tournament, as his hat-trick against Ireland in a qualification playoff sent the Scandinavians to Russia 2018.

Hopefully, this latest Instagram post can inspire his teammates to step up their performances and book Denmark a place in next year’s European Championships.

Therefore, it remains something of a mystery as to which players had the unfortunate honour of getting mugged off by the Austrian, but they’re certainly going to be blushing when they see the video has been posted on Instagram.

Aston Villa’s predicted starting XI for trip to Arsenal

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa face a trip to north London to face Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon with the Premier League newcomers looking to improve on their start to the season.

They sit outside the relegation zone on goal difference alone, having won just one of their five matches this campaign.

Last time out was just last Monday as they welcomed a West Ham side that had only lost to Manchester City this season and Dean Smith’s men would have come away feeling worse off after the goalless stalemate.

Club captain Jack Grealish claimed the result ‘felt like a defeat’ as Villa couldn’t capitalise on having a man advantage for the last quarter of the match.

So will the 48-year-old ring the changes to generate more success?

The answer is probably not as the Villa boss has remained quite stubborn in playing his system – seven members of the squad have started all five of their Premier League matches so far this season.

Therefore, it seems likely that the defence will remain much the same, and they have every right to after recording two clean sheets which ties for first in the league.

Marvelous Nakamba impressed in his top-flight debut, scoring a 7.35 rating, so he should remain with both midfield mainstays Jack Grealish and John McGinn slightly ahead of him – they are two of that seven to play every game.

The only changes we predict are out wide – as mentioned, Smith will keep his system the way it is even despite us offering a very plausible alternative earlier this week.

Ahmed Elmohamady came on as a substitute against the Hammers and was the man on the receiving end of Arthur Masuaku’s second yellow card. He played in an attacking right-wing role so that could well be reprised at the Emirates. It would be a surprising selection but one that isn’t totally out of the equation.

On the other side, Trezeguet is available for selection after serving a suspension of his own – he will likely come back into the lineup at the expense of Anwar El Ghazi after the 24-year-old’s controversial moment with Tyrone Mings.

Wesley keeps his place considering he’s the only senior striker fit after Jonathan Kodjia’s ‘freak’ injury.

Birmingham City fans are fuming at Pep Clotet after loss to Derby County

[ad_pod ]

Birmingham City succumbed to a second straight defeat in the Championship as Derby County rounded off a controversial week with a victory at Pride Park.

The home side were missing three key regulars in Mason Bennett, Tom Lawrence and captain Richard Keogh following a drink driving incident in midweek, but that didn’t stop them from taking the lead inside the first two minutes.

Chris Martin, who was making his first Rams start in nearly two years, coolly slotted home for the only goal in the first 45 minutes.

Phillip Cocu’s men doubled their lead five minutes into the second period with Martyn Waghorn’s excellent finish, but the Blues fought back and should have even gone ahead themselves.

Gary Gardner first headed home before Ivan Sunjic smashed a stunning effort past Kelle Roos to level the match within the hour mark, but the Rams shot-stopper became the hero by saving Lukas Jutkiewicz’s penalty.

And Derby made them pay as Jamie Paterson finished off a rapid counter-attack to hand them their second league win of the season.

Several Birmingham fans took to Twitter following the defeat to vent their anger, with the bulk of it being aimed at manager Pep Clotet.

One supporter wanted the manager sacked, claiming his post-match comments were the ‘same old predictable nonsense’, which was backed up by another who claimed he needs to be replaced.

A further member of the Blues faithful labelled Clotet as the ‘biggest issue’ with one more believing they were in a relegation battle under the Spaniard.

Newcastle accused of betraying the fans by Stan Collymore

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking on “The Last Word with Stan Collymore” podcast, the former Liverpool striker has revealed Newcastle are heading for relegation this season following their abject showing at the weekend.

What did he say?

The Magpies suffered a 5-0 humiliation at the hands of Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester side, and reports since the debacle have claimed the players will be holding a meeting to try and sort the situation out.

Watch the video below to see the most insane overhead kick you will see this week…

However, Collymore has slammed the side for their performance, and insisted they committed the ultimate sin on a football pitch.

He said: “One **** performance, two or three good ones, another diabolical one. That is heading one way and that will be relegation.

“The biggest criticism you can ever make of a football team is that they didn’t try. At Norwich, the narrative was that Newcastle United didn’t try. I’m accusing Newcastle United – their players – of not trying against Leicester City.

“Make no mistake about this if Newcastle had 12 men on the pitch, never mind ten, they could have been 5-0 down.”

Betrayal

To be accused of downing tools, and “not trying” as Collymore alludes to, is perhaps the biggest slight you could make on a footballer’s character. Whether you’re playing Sunday league football with your mates or matching up against the best in a World Cup final, there is no point playing football at anything less than 100%.

Instead, the Magpies’ display has raised severe questions of whether they’re committed to the cause. Steve Bruce already had a difficult job on his hands in trying to replace Rafa Benitez, but when his players let him down as they did so against Leicester, then he really has no hope.

If they don’t buck up their performances, Newcastle look set for a really rough season indeed. The least the club’s fans deserve is the players trying their best. Anything below that level is unacceptable. On Sunday, the Magpies stooped lower than anyone could have imagined, and if Collymore’s verdict is correct, it is the ultimate betrayal of the fans who dedicate their time and money to the club they love so much.
